I cut some "hardware cloth" (metal grid from Big Box) over it before reinstalling, to make it less hospitable to mice. It's troublesome getting the filter in and out to change, but beats mouse air being blown into the car. I'm hoping to come up with something more sensible/easy.
"runs just fine without it" That filter is the only thing that kept mice, who'd made a home in it, out of my car. And with the hole they chewed in it, blew mouse (fur, and whatever) into the air, which made me deathly ill, pneumonia, one winter. "without it", at your own risk.
New problem with this, this year. FRAM and SuperTech are now selling the wrong size for this for a Sonata, an inch too big. FRAM has reused their old part number for a new size, and Super Tech's version a tad too big so the fans don't unfold (air will bypass their filter when fan fold kinks in on the sides). Should've returned here, and followed Flora, Microguard 3701, from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. Would've saved myself a lot of trouble.
Tip- keep glove box door closed when removing rubber grommet/clip through the side opening . It is easier to remove/replace.
Thanks for informing me, I just did this I have a 07 Hyundai Sonata 🤝
Thanks! You just saved me $53.00 minus the filter cost!!
Thanks for putting up the video. I keep forgetting how to get at the band on the side.

@@buzoff4642 I did replace it. I also replaced the filter on the new Sonata that I have and has improved air flow as well.
@@kameljoe21 Glad to hear it! Best wishes for good health William.
Did you have to put the clip on in the back that you took off? Thanks for the video, I am going to change mine.
Mark Paris - thank you , I'm glad the video helped you and yes you must put clip back on 😊
There is an arrow on the filter which shows which way the air flows. Notice she did not check this.

Holy moly, just checked, you're right! Never noticed that, thanks for the mention.
