I was one of those guys who were at the theater. I was a high schooler. U're right, I was so hyped up for this film because I loved the first one. In the movie, all I could think was "is it me or do the effects suck?" We didn't have IMDB back then to tell which movie sucks.
I was in high school when it came out and I was actually bored.
Eh, I was a fan of the games and the first movie, which I probably watched a thousand times, sometimes three times a day (it was the only VHS-cassette I had) and I still refused to see this movie even to this day. And IMDb started in 96, a year before this film came out.

You just had Siskel and Ebert giving two thumbs up or down. They didn't cover this one, but they covered the original. Ebert didn't like it. Siskel said he liked it so much that he was considering playing the game! I usually disagreed with Siskel, but homie didn't let me down for Mortal Kombat!

Why? He'd already died in 3 before this came out. He even has a gravestone in the Graveyard stage.
JC is an experienced action movie star, maybe after he saw that they are making no sense he decided to wanted out in this shitty sequel and decided to charge Shao Kahn to escape this abomination.
it made sense to me since Johnny Cage died between the MK2 and MK3 storylines - he was killed during the Outworld Invasion of Earthrealm which is why he wasn’t on the MK3 roster. I didn’t think the movie would follow the games though, so in that sense I was just as surprised as you!
Alright GG here's the thing, I actually was in the theater when this was released. It was me, my uncle, one of his friends and my grandad... The song was hype as fuck still, but on opening weekend, there were only 4 people in that entire theater. Yep, that's how awesome annihilation was.

I saw this in theaters when it came out. I was mega hyped. My mom made my sister take me. And my mom brought me to see the first Mortal Kombat movie in theaters. So not even she was willing to sit through MK Annihilation for her baby boy.

When the first movie hit theaters, it displayed the most advanced computer animation we'd ever seen. Every local news station devoted a segment to the movies release. The visuals were that ground-breaking at the time.

I remember seeing the trailer for this in theatres for the first time and being more excited than I had been for any movie, looking at the billboard ads outside the theatre in anticipation for months, and then seeing it in theatres, all with my Mom. I still remember the walk from the car to the lobby, the lobby layout, and the hype when I heard the mortal kombat theme song play at the opening credits. Memories 💜

The killing of Johnny Cage is cannon to the OG games. The actor who played Johnny in MK 1 & 2, Daniel Pesina, got in trouble for being in ads for a competing fighting game. So Johnny Cage was killed off right before MK 3. Why they decided to stick with this detail for the movie when it gets so much other shit wrong, I have no idea.

I love this movie. Mostly for nostalgia reasons. I fully understand that it isn't a good movie however, it was one of the handful of vhs tapes we had in my house growing up so I watched it ALOT as a kid. Still live it now even knowing it's trash lol
Right there with you, this movie is literally a fucking huge part of my childhood, me and my brother would reenact the fight scenes and pretend to be various characters etc, we had a ripped version my dad recorded from the TV on a blank VHS and we treasured that shit, this and Arnold's Predator movie lol

Alright, now you definitely need to check out the TV Series: Mortal Kombat Conquest. Yeah, It's bad but it's awesome, I loved it as a kid lol. Characters are pretty cool and cheesy and it only lasts one season (hardcore ending!) Also, I loved me some Jeffrey Meek as the jokey Raiden and let's not forget Siro, the greatest MK character to ever grace the screen.

Shiva being killed so quickly is annoying because in the games she usually played a "pre-boss" role and was actually pretty tough to beat. But in the movie she gets gimmick-killed. Sad.

I always heard that Johnny's original actor wanted more money for a sequel, what with killing goro and scorpion, and the studio killed him so quickly to get away with paying him like nothing.
Tho it's been years since I first read that and have no idea how accurate it is.
Because it was the directors first film, he decided they didn't need johnny cage. Sonya wanted half a million dollars to come back and the director paid a new girl 50 grand to do it and pocketed the rest

during the events of the OG MK2-MK3 story (Outworld Invasion of Earthrealm) Johnny Cage was canonically killed, explaining his absence from MK3’s roster - so the opening of this movie was pretty true to the lore. but then Raiden opens his mouth and Shao Kahn laughs and Sonya screams and Sindel poses and Kitana Surprise Pikachu faces and I fucking die from second-hand embarrassment.

Yeah that was directed by the same guy that did Annabelle and Wish Upon. Didn't know it was his first movie. I wonder if he blew it on pricey film equipment and shooting locations.
I thought the first Mortal Kombat movie was a masterpiece when I first saw in in theaters when I was a kid, so seeing this for the first time even back then...was a disappointment... but ALMOST in a so bad it's hilarious kind of way. So I have some fond memories of it, sadly, lol.

If you really haven’t seen it yet, the one anime you absolutely need to watch is Death Note. It’s been 15 years since it’s original airing, and it’s still not just the best anime i’ve ever seen, but one of the best TV shows ever made, animated or otherwise--it is that good and I would love to see you review it. At only 37 episodes, it’s a relatively short and easy watch, but at some point you will be begging for more episodes because you just don’t want it to end. 📓🖤
