A few corrections: John Browning was not involved in the design of the 1873. It was a direct descendant of the 1866, which was basically an improved version of the original Henry. The 1876 was also a direct descendant of these rifles, just enlarged. Turn your 20" into a 17" threaded barrel gun. I found a barrel on Craigslist from a Triple Black that I'm going to put on my 16" Rossi. These things are great with a can.
Your right about the 357 mag out of a carbine but way over for the 30-30 ballistics. The 30-30 is lucky to get 2300 fps with a 150 Grain bullet ,More like 2250 to 2300 Fps. 2600 70 2700 fps is 300 Savage velocity. What is worse is that most velocities for the 30-30 as listed in ammo ads are shot out of a 24 inch barrel and inflated at that.
Good looking rifle but a guy at the local range bought one and the accuracy was terrible. A gunsmith slugged the barrel and said the bore was too large. He sent it back and they said the bore was "within acceptable specs". He got rid of that rifle.
A 38-55 will not fit in a 1873 Winchester. A 38-40 will. John browning did not design the 1873. The first rifle browning designed for Winchester was the 1885 high wall.

Thank you for your service.
I have no experience with it. Those I've talked to that have them seem to enjoy them, but recoil is more significant.
44 magnum is good just like the 357, cost of ammunition is a lot more though, and harder to find unless you buy online. I had both in 44 magnum and 45 colt which I sold just because of the ammo, I kept the 357 and 38 special so much cheaper to shoot.
I was just wondering how it would be for a deer hunting rifle for less than a 100 yards and brush gun??
Because I hunt in Missouri for deer?
Thanks for all of y'all feed back.
@@genemcdaniel8514 fine rifle for that purpose. I've taken several deer with a 357M lever rifle, and my Undersheriff's kids have taken about 10 in the last 7 seven years with one. Never lost or tracked one.
Use a heavier bullet (we use 158gr Federal JSP).
Looks like you used an empty shell casing to plug the hole where the safety used to be 👍👍👍 what caliber casing did you use ??
No. Used the switch that came on it, just removed it from the gun, ground the firing pin block of the bottom side, the ears off the top side and reinstalled it.
@@SheriffMattOller thanks for the quick response back I’m goin have to try that I’ve got the 16 in Version in stainless love the gun hate that damn safety
@yankeeman6851 stainless would be much less noticeable. Take about 10 minutes, a punch, hammer and grinder.
Turn your 20" into a 17" threaded barrel gun. I found a barrel on Craigslist from a Triple Black that I'm going to put on my 16" Rossi. These things are great with a can.
Better than a pistol, Rossi prices them right and they work. i use a 6" 26-2 in 357 so 1 would go well.
Great video. Cool dude.
What load does your deputy use in n deer?
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Nice ! I might consider one .
My first R92 16" was $275. Let it go to a co-worker. New one, on the way, was $702 (with tax and shipping).
@@jerryg2073 yeah. Crazy how they've gone up. My first one was like 325......... my last one was 695. Nutz.
Elmer Keith actually came up with the 357 magnum not Smith and Wesson, S&W was the first one to adopt the caliber.
bird shot option, we grow copperheads and cotton mouths in Morgan co.
i thought you had a left side loading gate, until i noticed your wedding ring, then realized you are filming in mirror. lol
Good looking rifle but a guy at the local range bought one and the accuracy was terrible. A gunsmith slugged the barrel and said the bore was too large. He sent it back and they said the bore was "within acceptable specs". He got rid of that rifle.
Up here in Ontario Canada I use my triple black to fend off the black flies and mosquitoes when I take out the garbage EH!
A 38-55 will not fit in a 1873 Winchester. A 38-40 will. John browning did not design the 1873. The first rifle browning designed for Winchester was the 1885 high wall.
Thanks, informative video. This is the model I want, in stainless however. The safety was probably added to meet import requirements.
You take a rifle to take out your trash in Missouri? Sounds like Chicago
Great story on your Lead deputy's kids. Well done on that gift Sir! Enjoy my R-92 357. Great little handy carbine!
Saw one in the gun store the other day. They were asking 1088.99 Not exactly a budget price for a budget gun. I have a Henry that I love and I had a Winchester 94 but let my neighbor talk me out of it. The only thing i didn't like about it was the loop lock. I love the look of the Rossi but the price is keeping me away from it.
Your velocity estimates are about 200 fps too high for the 16"... Also I have two Rossi 92, 20"&24" both 44 mags.
John Browning didn't design the 1873 Winchester. The first design he sold the Winchester was the 1885 High Wall.
You're correct. Another commenter caught that as well. I had the 1895 Winchester on my mind but the 73 came off my tongue. Thanks!
Great review! But grabbing a gun to take the trash out is the most American thing ever…😂
My kind of sheriff!
The safety on the top is a requirement needed to pass the import law.
Sorry, but John Browning did not design the 1873 Winchester.
Check his biography, "the guns of John Browning,
Keep up the good work
Thanks"
You're correct......... I mis-spoke and had "Winchester" on my mind while I was blathering. I intended to reference the 1895, but my mind went to to the 73.
Good catch!
If it's good enough for a sheriff to carry must be good never owned a Rossi lever gun but I'm looking at a 24-inch octagon barrel in 357 anyone out there happen to have one of those any kind of reviews or comments about those
Browning as awesome as he was did not design the 1873. It was a copy of the 1860 Henry
A damp towel and hot iron can remove those dents in the wood.
Very interesting, how does that work in theory?
Interesting, because I have a few old firearms that have dents in the wood and have never heard of that before. 👍
@FM-iq4mx a dent in wood will swell up due to the steam. This will not work on a scratch.
Have you experienced any case bulging when shooting .357's ?
Better check the designer of that 1873.
Great video , Sheriff. Hate the safety, messing with J.B. design....bad idea !
@mikefain1342 the safety is to meet federal import regulations..
I do use it when I lower the hammer on a loaded chamber
They only made them in 20 inch but my favorite 92 is a 20 inch Browning, no safety , except half cock.
I do not believe that John Browning designed the 1873 Winchester.
@@johnholliday6324 you're correct. My lips outran my mind.
yeehaw
Brazilian red mahogany wood.
nobody says "leaver" dude c'mon if that was the case it would be spelled as such. Good stories though.
Mine is a complete failure. Sent it back, and was told it works fine. Get it back and they didn't fix anything. No more Rossi guns for me
He sez lever more than he sez leever
If you think that was a review then you are out of your mind.😂😂😂
Your video is reverse image... loading gate on wrong side... wedding ring on right hand..!! 🦧
