GE's super material: How the CMC process works

  • After years of testing, GE and its partners have cracked the code to mass-producing ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material which they are now putting in state of the art jet engines. CMCs are as tough as metals, but only one-third as heavy and can operate at 2400 degrees Fahrenheit -- 500 degrees higher than most advanced alloys. Here's how the process works.

    Liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) is just one of methods to fabricate CMC. Others like CVI PIP still can produce CMC

    We have a hard enough time with CMC making the turbine blades at GE so whatever it would require to make this owl thing is probably at least 50 years off, if ever.

    May i know which binders are used in this process?and what will be happend if ceramic layers seperat from turbine blade on high velocity?is this technologey tested and evaluated for long perior of time?

      @E Van 9X isn’t in full production yet, but the CFM LEAP is and that has CMCs

    GE also can make cheapest turbine with low quality super alloys.which a series of reliable turboprop engines can be made with lowest costs.and the price of traveling and transportation will be significantly reduced.there are many poor people all around the world which their life will be affected.also GE can make more money in absence of other companies.

      Options for travel for poor people already exists. This is for fuel consumption reduction and increased performance.
