The weaknesses of this interviewer are also his strengths. The hackneyed questions get hackneyed answers, but the deeply ignorant questions provoke Richard into deviation from his standard promotional tour script
Enjoyed this! Seeing Richard in concert for the 10th time soon. Bert Jansch infuenced Jimmy Page as much as he influenced anyone I think. I beg to differ with Richard regarding Peter Green. His style, by the time he left John Mayall at least, was totally his own. Yes, he definitiely borrowed a lot from BB King but he went far beyond that particular style and forged his own unique path.
Wonderful to see Richard Thompson being interviewed for his book. Too bad that the interviewer's depth of knowledge about music was so pedestrian, so conventional, so self-centered, and so oblivious to details. It wasn't surprising to me that Thompson said 'Naah' at the end.
If RT was my neighbour I'd love to hear him play anytime, love his work. Insightful interview here! Well done.
Lovely interview...and the book is good as well.
Mark Knopfler managed to make ‘Tow Law’ and ‘Spanish City’ sound romantic, so there’s hope for Richard too!

Love that you mentioned Mr Peter Green, but also sad you left out Davy Graham
