      Here. Let me dumb it down. Big gear spin slower than smaller gear.
      Circumference formula is C=2×pi×r. C meas Circuference, pi is 3.14159265359, and r is the radius (half of the diameter of the circle, or the distance measured from the center point of the circle to the edge).
      If the circumference of circle one is 8 inches, millimeters, centimeters, fetlet, miles, kilometers, whatever measurement, and circle two has a circumference of 1 inches, millimeters, centimeters, fetlet, miles, kilometers, whatever. Then it has a gear ratio of 8:1. This means that circle two will spin 8 times while circle one spins 1 time. Simple. Gear ratios on motorcycles are a little backwards because of extremely high rotations per minute on the crankshaft. If you were to flip it around, you would end up with some pretty crazy results. Maybe even hurting yourself by breaking metal parts and giving yourself shrapnel. So, it is best to pay attention in physics before engineering things with gears and rotating parts.

  • @jackdonoghue5527
    @jackdonoghue5527 3 года назад +102

    Fun fact, you dont need to find the circumference to find the gear ratio, just the radius or diameter. So a D=5 and a D:10 have a 2:1 ratio just as a C=5pi and a C=10pi also have a 2:1 gear ratio

    • @jhg8464
      @jhg8464 Год назад +2

      @@grantscott1686 well it is simple, if a gear with a diameter of 9in has 36 gears meaning for every 1 inch in diameter there are 4 teeth or more precisely 0.785 inches of circumference per gear (1/0.785 gears per inch) and you want a 3:1 gear ratio you downsize the circumference or diameter by 3, both of which will make the diameter 3 inches and downsize the gears by 3 making it 12 gears for 3 inches in diameter you still have the same gear ratio of circ/gears which is still.785 inches per gear

      Its proven that a person can't really concentrate more than 25 minutes straight in one sitting and multitasking temporarily and even permanently lowers IQ. One class lasts about 45 minutes and you jump from topic to topic while switching classes throughout the day = multitasking / jumping from one activity to another. Proof that school actually makes you dumber.

      @@563spaceman Both the 25 minutes of concentration and multitasking = bad are very much considered to be true and proven and easily searchable. Common estimates for sustained attention to a freely chosen task range from about 5 minutes for a two-year-old child, to a maximum of around 20 minutes in older children and adults.| Several scientific studies around the world have concluded the brain doesn't switch tasks like an expert juggler. Quite the opposite. It can reduce your IQ by as much as 10 points, cause mental blanks and reduce your productivity by 40 per cent.

    • @justjack6125
      @justjack6125 Год назад +1

      it is mentioned that circle 1 is 8 times as big of circle 2(circumference). Another way of saying 8:1 gear ratio would be that circle 1 has the potential to move circle 2 eight times in one rotation.
      If you supposed it was 1:8, one rotation of circle 1 would have the potential of moving second gear 0.125 times.

    one that is baffling me right now is Tracks. Say a person has a 4 or more wheeled vehicle. . With nothing else changed but making space for it..... if you wrap a rubber track around all the wheels on each side so now it looks like a tank or skid steer..... have you changed the final gear ratio? If so are you now moving slower or faster. Im guessing slower with its normal tires now acting like sun gears to an outer gear ring (the track)
