- The Nikon F2 is a 35mm film camera made in the 70s-80s. In this video, I break down the good, the bad, and give some photo samples before a rating on this camera. You can find out for yourself whether the Nikon F2 is worth it or not.

This legendary camera singlehandedly destroyed Leica and put the last nails on the range finder coffin. And it's far from being not fancy, I'll take this over a Leica M6/M3 anyday of the week.
Here here. I second that comment. BTW, that wouldn't be a bad thing if San Francisco fell into the ocean.
Although to be honest it was the F that pushed Leica out of the pro market. by 1971 Nikon was the n.1 pro camera brand already.
@@matteovrizzi you're right. However, it was the excellent F2 that made Nikon legend. By the way, the M-system always kept Leica in the pro market.
Had one for over 35 yrs. With no problems until the meter went out a few years ago, still worked perfectly, a grjeat camera ,camera felt natural in my hands never had to grasp for controls, very natural for the hands.

Great overview!
One thing about metering. You have an F2AS, which doesn't use bunny ears (the metal prongs sticking out from the aperture ring on many lenses) for meter coupling. It uses AI - a notch cut into the aperture ring - which connects with the meter coupling tab, the metal thingie hanging down above the lens mount. Older meter heads for the F2 (the original Photomic, S and SB) had a pin that connected with the bunny ears. When mounting a lens the aperture ring had to be racked from one end to the other to let the meter know the largest aperture. The oldest Nikon lenses are pre-AI, with bunny ears and no notch in the aperture ring. Newer (from the late 1970s) AI lenses have both bunny ears and the notched ring.
Pre-AI lenses won't couple with the F2AS meter but still work in stop-down mode: Press up on the metal thingie hanging down from the camera so it locks out of the way. Then mount the old lens on the camera. Turn the meter on and hold down the DOF preview button while adjusting aperture/shutter speed. When you go back to using an AI lens slide the little switch above the AS on the front of the camera to unlock the meter coupling feeler.
Hey awesome information my friend! I knew that something was weird with the metering tools but wasn’t sure exactly what it was. I appreciate you explanation!
Yep, I have an F2A, works the same as the F2AS, only difference being the internal sensor/indicator. You can use any F mount lens with aperture ring. Cant say that about my F5 unfortunately.
@@727jetjumper Nikon offered a modification that replaced the standard AI coupling on the F5 with a folding pin as found on several older cameras for non-AI lens compatibility. Not sure how many of these exist on the used market.
@@MrNakohl I know it was a factory offered mod, but highly doubt it's available today. I haven't seen the mod on any F5's but know how it works, My FE has the folding pin.(why they didn't include that type on all F mounts after it's debut, idk)
Right! His complaints about the meter coupling with lens has to do with the particular viewfinder he has (DP-12). A DP-3 works with both AI and the older non-AI (bunny ears metal prong) lenses.
Love how you demonstrated the ease of use of the light meter with the lens cap on. Lol... ;)
You can still meter without those rabbits ears, the F2 will meter any glass you put on it Nikon or any other manufacturer, use stop down metering, click the depth of field preview button and metering with while pressing. That’s the huge advantage of a Nikon F2 with a DP-12 head aka the Nikon F2AS. Definitely makes the camera better than a Leica.
I had no idea! Thanks for the info!
I love your straight and honest review. No BS and no pretentiousness. You are something to emulate serr
I appreciate that! Just trying to give it a view like most people would use it
Nice video and nice photos. As a long time user of Nikon F, F2 and F3. All three offer a 100% view finder coverage. what you see in your finder is exactly what will be on your 35mm exposure. I think that is very important to anyone who wishes to shoot film "full frame" without cropping or altering the image. Only the Nikon F line is true 100%
If I remember correctly, if you press that button (DOF preview I guess), and turn the leaver around ti right / down what you get is mirror lockup. Combined with the self timer, you get ultra - steady camera for long exposures.
I had that camera long, long time ago. Cheers...
You got a Nikkor 50MM F1.8 lens and if you get the AIS Nikon lens which is designed to work well with your NIKON F2s camera then you got a COMPLETE KIT
I have a leica ma with a 35mm summicron v5 and I also have a nikon f2sb that I usually have a 28mm or my 105mm on it. The nikon feels better built to me. They are both amazing cameras though just different. Love to see nikon f2 reviews. it is in my opinion one of the most underrated cameras.
@ 6:06 You're showing an F2 AS. Both F2 S/AS are the modern Ai (pre Ai-s). They do not use or need the lens fork anymore but can clear it. The each now meter on E series & AF as long as it has an aperture ring. In fact it can mount & meter fork'd or non fork'd non Ai lenses by pressing the Ai tab back up into the finder. Metering is done old school stop down method. Open wide to focus and step down to meter. That tab is the "Ai" (auto indexing) exactly how used today but mounted around the lens mount.
You got a beautiful camera.
is there a simple handgrip available for it?
I got one of these classic Nikon F2 black body and it got the Nikon MD1 Motor drive and the Nikon MB1 power drive and the Nikon DS1 expousre meter and I need to get the camera repaired and get a METER HEAD for it and I only paid £10.00 for it from a camera shop in London
I have 2@ F2s with MB1 and MD2 battery packs and motor drives. By far, the toughest camera ever, good for two MILLION shots before any service, not to mention film (RIP) which set the standard for sharpness and detail nothing digital can claim. Maybe in 50 years.
I think your list of dislikes of the camera is insane (by the way, they Leica M6 doesn't have a selftimer at all). However, it's very nice you promote this magnificent camera anyway, bravo!
"It's no Leica, but it's there." some men just want to watch the world burn. :)
Burn baby burn! Haha
Fun video. Amd ues, you're worthy of a Leica but do u need to spend that to b good! Absolutely not. Artists with skills on the F2 will outperform an amateur on any Leica. (:
Happy shooting on your F2AS
You put an 'E' series lens on an F2??? You heretic!!!!
"It weighs 1,000 pounds" ???
Haaa!! Surely he's joking, maybe close to 1000 grams, not made from Titanium Steel, that doesn't exist. The F2 is so popular anyone can make a video and get hits. Keep buying them
@@catmonkey6826 : Mine weighs 1100 grams (2.4 pounds) with a 50mm f2.0 lens attached.
It is the great camera ever biult.even I am lieca man.
