I'm a 74 yr old 8 handicap senior. Just got fitted for the Ping G710. 6 through "U" . I don't care how they sound. They are amazingly straight and add a few more yards. The one thing that really stands out about these is the backspin they put on the ball especially with the 8 though U irons. The clubhead feels very light especially when you shallow the club before impact. Resulting in more speed. I got midsized grips and what a difference!
I can’t wait for your budget mid to high handicap irons of 2021!!!!!!! I can’t afford anything like these amazing clubs featured in this video. I’m in the market for a new set of irons. I’m playing 15 year old top flights.
a thing you could do is get fitted this year and buy the ones you got fitted for next season for cheaper also can start budgeting for them a year ahead of time this way
For real value try the Wilson Launch Pad or Cleveland Launcher HB - I own the former and they are 2/3rds the cost of your top 5 and I love them. It’s very hard to chunk them on the fairway.
Just got fitted for the Apex DCB earlier this summer and LOVE them! The sound, feel, and look was better than anything else. I’m hitting them much father and much more forgiving than my old Pings. I also get feedback and can feel the ball better which is really nice. Truly enjoying them. Currently a 14 handicap.
Just got the Titleist T300. I wanted a Ping G425 because I have ping G425 driver/woods, but the T300 just fitted me better. I hit smoother, further, just better. Plus they look thinner than the chunky G425 so that helps. For my fitting it was also gonna be cheaper by a couple hundred dollars so it’s a no brainer
Bought the Apex 21 with the Recoil 75 UST shafts. Traded in the Apex Pro '17's. So went to a more forgiving style. And for those who think i'm a Calloway only person, I game the Mizuno ST200 driver and 3 wood. Waiting on Mizuno to offer us Lefties a 5 wood. I shot 70 a few weeks back. Lowest round ever. previous was 73. Mind you I was 69 at the time so almost shot my age. I generally slightly fade the ball but can draw the ball with these irons. My handicap has dropped to 9. I think i'm staying with these....😛
Got fitted last year at a PGA Superstore. Went in planning on buying the Mizuno Hot Metals, tried everything, ended up getting the Srixon ZX7s. They (like a lot of new irons) are “ loft jacked”. With new clubs and practice, went from an 18 to 15. I am very happy with my Srixons, and I think these will gain in popularity. Looking forward to being a 12 in 2022 (fingers crossed X)!
@walker b Yeah the good thing with irons is they'll last you a long time. I just spent $850 on Sim2 irons but couldn't justify an extra $1000 for Titleist lol
Great review! Reaffirms my club fitting yesterday for the T300, which hit high, far and forgiving. Usually, I'm a stiff shaft but the regular shaft suited my swing tempo. I won't mention this find to the LADS 😁
I bought a set of Mizuno hot metals this summer and I love them! They have given me more distance, but more importantly more accuracy. Also, I got the combo set which has two hybrids rather than 5 and 6 irons, and those hybrids are the best I have ever hit. I am very happy with this set.
My coach, who is also a Titleist fitter, recommended the T300 for me. But when I tried it compared to the T200, the T200 felt a bit lighter through the swing, and didn't make a huge difference to my consistency. So I got the T200s. I've been playing with them now for a year and I love these irons, and I've improved more, too! Good move, James, not putting the T400 at the top. They are too big in my opinion, and rather overpriced.
In June I started looking to replace my original Ping Eyes that I had been using for nearly 40 yrs. In South Dakota there was very limited stock to choose from in Ping & Titleist. T300s weren't available to try there. I was most consistent with T400s of the those models that were available. They were really easy to hit off the deck with the wider sole since it makes it more difficult to "chuck" it. What was pleasantly surprising was the minimum of 10 yds gain in distance on every club with the ability to still stop very well with Srizon ZV's 2021 version
Great review. Very surprising no mention of the Cleveland Halo Launchers, Wilson Launchpad or similar hybrid type irons. Maybe because you are a good golfer reviewing clubs designed for pretty average golfers. As an occasional golfer who needs a a lot of help hybrid irons are the way forward
James great video and surprising No 1. I am very much a budget minded golfer 'cause of family commitments etc and can't wait for your top 5 budget irons review. All utterly watchable and thoroughly informative. Cheers. Colin
The best deal is probably the Callaway Edge at Costco - 500$ for 10 clubs (driver, 3W, 5H, 6i-SW, Odyssey putter). It's a re-issue of the X2Hot from in the past. The DCB is like a modernised forged version of those, but similar. Combined with the Kirkland wedges, you have 13 clubs for 650$ or so (690£). Perhaps the best deal around.
Having bought Mizuno JPX 850 irons a few years back, I really wasn’t satisfied with the performance. I decided to go to a unbiased fitter (club champion) there I went through at least ten different companies including the ones that you considered forgiving. When it came down to forgiveness, shafts, And swing weights, I was quite surprised that the Ben Hogan PTx pro were best suited for me (10 handicap) very forgiving! I was practicing on the chipping green while talking to my buddy with AirPods. It was one best practices ever, got 3 chip ins over 50 feet. I haven’t done that again since and I think it’s because the talking actually makes you relax and swing better

I have tried all 5 except the Sim2. Ridiculous strong lofted! Only change I would make is flipping the Mizuno at the top. Consistency is incredible in distance and spin. The opposite of that would be the rad speed which was all over the place. Keep u p the good work.
I'm still playing with Taylormade R7's which are extremely forgiving and feels like butter when I catch it good. Prior and still relevant Taylormade 300 series forged irons which are just as forgiving with a buttery feel also. So until I find a reason to change this is where I'll be. I’ve had the same irons for 9 years and I’ve no intention of changing. Irons have just become stronger. My 7 iron is basically the same club as a modern 9 iron.
Loft wise yes but peak hight and land angles are really what matter. I just got fitted for t300s from some older pings. Basically every iron was 20-30 yards longer and significantly higher with better landing angles and spin.
Understand, my ICW 11 are 30 years old and I think that spending $600 on range balls may help my game more. The 7 irons he was hitting were basically my 5 iron in loft and shaft length.
@@jamesgraham6109 yeah, definitely not going to help you more than practice. I just don’t hit my irons very far to begin with. Having 150 and being able to confidently hit 9 instead of a being stuck between a gassed up 8 or a smooth 7 is huge for me.
Well James today is Christmas day and.......under the tree was a full set of Cleveland Launcher XL Halo Irons I'm 66 years old and a 15 handicap so these will work for me as I get older. 🎁🎄⛳😊
I just did two separate iron fittings where I tested just about every model going and my favourites were the Titleist t300, ping g245 and PXG 0211 DC. Titleist is too bloody expensive though so going to go with one of the other two. They’re not ‘budget’, they’re just superior value.
Hi Craig have you got your T300 Titleist irons yet? I was hoping to get your feedback on how they performed on the course, Mine are on order 7iron to 48deg wedge in graphite shafts i am 74 with 9 handicap Dickey
@@dickbroomer7877 yeah I got mine a good few weeks ago now. Launching higher than my old (very old Nike irons), spinning lower too and getting some extra distance, especially on mishits. Really enjoying look down by the ball and feel too.
I think you should play a complete round with the number 1 and show the whole round, not just a few holes. And see what you can score with them. Ive suggested this to numerous you tube pros, and they all seem scared to do it. If they are so easy lets see what a pro can do with them, or is this too below them? Go on James be the first. Great video James bye the way.
I found the ping 710 to work best for me but the order time is terrible right now I've been waiting 10 weeks so far. Love the black finish and I even ordered them with black steel shafts
Not sure if I have a top 5. I agree with you on the Callaway Apex DCB. I am currently playing with the 2006 Big Bertha irons so anything that I go try has so much more technology. I also went to the local golf shop and hit the Ping G410 and the G425. I absolutely love both of them. Each are very forgiving and at just under 800 US dollars for 5 thru PW. Love the channel. Cheers
I know this is a super random reply, but I am currently playing with 2004 Big Berthas and looking to finally upgrade. I’m interested in the Apex DCBs but now I’ve come across these Titelist 300s. My head is spinning from doing my own research. If you happen to see this…I was just wondering what you decided to go with.
Yep, these are definitely for the big budget low handicap golfer. Would definitely love a lower budget forgiving irons review. Great job on these though.
If someone was looking for a good budget set of irons. Would you recommend finding one of the 2020 top irons for mid-high HC, or go with a budget set from 2021?
More great content. Looking forward to the budget video when it lands. Would be interesting to see if any of the budgets come close to any of these 5 in terms of performance. Good stuff as always 👍🏻
Planning to get a new set of irons .. can you guide which irons to test hit .. need forgiving irons . Play yo 15 handicapper .. looking for distance and accuracy .. I am 52
This might just be me but as a mid handicapper I find chunkier clubs harder to hit - distance is quite consistent but its harder to hit the middle for me. I also don't think thicker top lines inspire confidence they just make me think I'm going to chunk it
I am a mid handicappers (7) and love having forgiving irons in my bag, just would love to see something forged with a thinner top line.....ah....the apex DCB....
At 7 you’re not a mid handicapper anymore! I’m a 14 handicap and just got the DCBs this year, and I can’t speak highly enough about them. Much thinner top line, but tons of forgiveness like a Ping or SIM2. Plus great distance without super jacked lofts that cause you the huge 20 year long miss every once in a while!
@@dmkfactor1721 yeah they look great too, iron play isn't the best part of my game but my up&down is pretty decent. Think I'm sold on either the Srixon zx5/7 blend, the jpx921 forged and tour......tough choice
Im 63 I took up golf 6 years ago 6'4' 220 LBS so I hand a set custom made ,all irons about an inch longer than most. Im a long hitter 200 7 ,220 5 170 ish 8 130 SW and 145 W 75+ 60! , anyway I have the Callaway big bertha irons ,5 years old and I think they are time to replace as I was playing 3 times a week , I think my shafts are fatigued and well as the heads, ( all materials deteriorate over time) problem is my HC is now a 26 .5 do to the fact I think the set is just used up and frustration takes over and I was a 20HC 2nd year into this ( HAD A GREAT GOLF COACH EVERY A WEEK)then dealt with health issues ( im back and feeling much better ,Your English accent and fast talking is hard to follow , Plain and simple I have to have mine custom made , 5 iron to PW , please suggest a head and shaft combination you feel would get me back to low to mid 90s game , , Thanks Brad USA .Any information from you would be greatly appreciated . Help?
I agree with your top 5 for the most part. Callaway has a knack for high handicap and the Apex DCB is no disappointment, a good contender for number 1, along with Titielist. Yes also to the Cobra RadSpeed and Wilson D9, especially considering the D9 pricing. Not all high handicap golfers are willing to spend the money for some of the premium clubs out there.
hi James great review...thought maybe PXG Gen 3 XP or Gen 4 XP would make it in there..love my PXG Gen 2 SGI 's but its time for an upgrade...and thinking of going from midsize grips to oversize due to the arthritis in my hands....your thoughts ?...cheers from western Canada
Do you hit these better than the Mizunos you use? Why, then, don't you play them? This is something I don't understand. Yes, I have heard about the mysterious and subtle "workability" - but I have also heard - often - that the scorecard doesn't show how, it only show how many.
I think with these type of irons it can come down to gapping and how you organise the lower end of your bag. If you are blasting an 8 iron 175 yards plus then you can start to run into an issue towards the wedge end, like needing a 45, 50, 54 and 60 degree wedge depending on how you like to play the higher lofted clubs
I’m a beginner so… when the irons are forgiving that means that when you hit it bad it doesn’t really affect the shot/makes it a good shot but u can only hit it straight. The pros irons aren’t forgiving but they know the sweet spot and can make to ball curve or something like that. I’m I right??
Im surprised that the Cleveland Launcher is not mentioned.. Add to that they are also cheaper than the any of the 5 irons mentioned. Maybe Its because its not one of the usual established brands but I feel they are by far the most forgiving clubs you can use.
I got fitted into the Maverick Max about a years ago when I picked up golf more seriously. Now, they feel a bit chunky and I think my golf has improved enough that I might need something else...or am I being a magpie???
I think it is interesting that you summarily dismissed the Titleist T400 because you don't like the "chunky" look. As a former 3-handicapper who used to play "blades" ('78 Wilson Staffs with steel stiff flex shafts), and who has aged and lost loads of strength and distance, I've tried all the clubs in this review AND the T400. The T400 is far and away the easiest to hit, most forgiving and longest hitting club of them all. Yes, they are super strong-lofted and long-shafted. These are the attributes that makes them the distance winner, but because of the weighting in the sole, they also launch the ball high. The offset puts the hands in the proper position at address. This helps the golfer get a good start at a good swing at the outset. Simply put, you can't miss! As we know, you can't make a good swing from a bad setup. These clubs help to produce a good setup. Oh and BTW, I don't mind the "chunky look" in the least. It is confidence-inspiring. I don't think Titleist "missed the mark" at all. Your videos are great, James, but I believe that you "missed the mark" on this one by letting your personal professional-level-player bias prevail when you eliminated the T400. I would guess that mid/high 'cappers really don't have that bias. They are looking for help getting the ball airborne with the lease amount of effort. The T400 does that. Yes, the T300's are great-looking, forgiving, all that, but they don't produce the distance, high launch angles and forgiveness of the T400's, AND they aren't as easy to hit. As an aside...I had the T400's, was hitting them great, but I decided to ditch them for something "better." Biggest mistake of my late-in-life golfing "career!" They are now back in my bag, and I am, once again, a happy camper. It will take some kind of miracle club to get me off these in the future. James, in the future, please leave your personal bias at the door when reviewing Game Improvement and so-called "Super Game Improvement" clubs. Those types of clubs are not for a golfer of your caliber in the first place. They are designed for those who are not professionals and probably never will be. The are designed to make the game easier and more fun for the rest of us! 😉
Have ping g410 irons James do you think I could hit taylormade p790 irons the new ones like the looks or are they for 12 and below handicappers or anybody
Thanks for your input, James. After getting fitted for irons this past week, it came down to the Srixon CX5'S and the Ping G 425's. Both hit straight, high, and consistent. Way more forgiving than the new Wilsons, of which I had the Wilson 100's in my bag for several years. Could not go wrong with either the Srixons or the Pings because they both look and hit great. My fitter said the numbers were better in every area with the Pings, so those will be my new clubs, but like everything else in these times, I will have a few weeks of waiting anxiously before I can go pick up my custom Pings!
I have a set of Ping G400s. Pretty forgiving.. I honestly do not have the next 4 on the top 5 irons since I have to pay for them. Get fitted, easy peasy.
So...question: For a really horrible golfer (me) are my 1997 Callaway Big Bertha Gold irons all I will ever need? By the way, these have a higher Maltby Playability Factor than any iron produced today (I'm not sure how much stock is given to this rating method these days.)Thanks. I really like your videos by the way!
Nice one mate. Haven't hit the t300 yet but pretty much agree with your take on the rest. Slightly off topic, love to see what you think of the new Callaway Epic Super Hybrid if you're planning to review it.
So what kind of money does any of those sets of clubs cost cause I played with the 10 year-old set Taylor maids and I love the club that's what I play with everyday
I got fitted with the updated 2019 m2 irons that you can still get brand new today so thought it was worth mentioning. Half the price of the newer 2021 irons ( £460 for 5 to sw ) and they are fantastic for forgiveness and distance. Only biggest complaint is there is a huge gap in distance between pw and sw so had to get myself a gap wedge. Would recommend to any mid/highhandicapper
Great clubs but the club faces of mine from 2019 caved in after 2 years of steady use. TM are great for technology but seems their build quality is suspect

The Titleist T300s are the real deal. My son is on the high school varsity golf team and he plays them. The T300s makes golf really easy for him.
Well James today is Christmas day and.......under the tree was a full set of Cleveland Launcher XL Halo Irons I'm 66 years old and a 15 handicap so these will work for me as I get older. 🎁🎄⛳😊
How about a review of the new Ben Hogan Edge EX irons?
You didn’t mention the Cleveland launcher XL halo. Awesome
First time watcher coming out of the bushes...hilarious vids.
Thanks for your time mate
I just did two separate iron fittings where I tested just about every model going and my favourites were the Titleist t300, ping g245 and PXG 0211 DC. Titleist is too bloody expensive though so going to go with one of the other two. They’re not ‘budget’, they’re just superior value.
My 5 picks in no particular order!
1) JPX Hot Metal
2) Ping G710
3) Titleist T300
4) Callaway Apex DCB
5) Srixon ZX5
I'm a 22 handicap playing at Bradley Park, just purchased a set of cobra t rails, really pleased with them, welcome your views
I've got a set of T300s on order. Fitted around 3 weeks ago. Looking forward to getting them in the bag.
Thanks Craig i can’t wait to see how i get on with mine they felt great testing better than Callaway TaylorMade Mizuno thanks Dickey
I tested a lot of these and settled on the Tour Edge C5210 Iron woods. Love them.
The t300 irons look good brand new though the old ones looked completely wrecked after a few months, never mind a year. How will these ones fair up?
I think you should play a complete round with the number 1 and show the whole round, not just a few holes. And see what you can score with them. Ive suggested this to numerous you tube pros, and they all seem scared to do it. If they are so easy lets see what a pro can do with them, or is this too below them? Go on James be the first. Great video James bye the way.
I found the ping 710 to work best for me but the order time is terrible right now I've been waiting 10 weeks so far. Love the black finish and I even ordered them with black steel shafts
Would you recommend the Titleist T200 over he T 300 if closer to mid not high handicap. Or Stixon Zx5. My 2 choices
I’ve just bought the Tietlist AP1 781 irons there so forgiving and the best irons on the market for new to mid handicappers
Ì use the Taylor sim2 max and omg my game has improved a lot I'm glad I have about them
More great content.
I am 52
Well done mate. Really looking forward to seeing your budget set list
I bought the PING G425s for 2021, love them. Will be buying a 3 hybrid.
Thought mine would be in the top 5.
This might just be me but as a mid handicapper I find chunkier clubs harder to hit - distance is quite consistent but its harder to hit the middle for me. I also don't think thicker top lines inspire confidence they just make me think I'm going to chunk it
Couldn’t agree more. I have the jpx 921 hot metal pros, absolute perfect club for my 10 handicap.
I am a mid handicappers (7) and love having forgiving irons in my bag, just would love to see something forged with a thinner top line.....ah....the apex DCB....
7 is like low handicap
At 7 you’re not a mid handicapper anymore! I’m a 14 handicap and just got the DCBs this year, and I can’t speak highly enough about them. Much thinner top line, but tons of forgiveness like a Ping or SIM2. Plus great distance without super jacked lofts that cause you the huge 20 year long miss every once in a while!
@@dmkfactor1721 yeah they look great too, iron play isn't the best part of my game but my up&down is pretty decent. Think I'm sold on either the Srixon zx5/7 blend, the jpx921 forged and tour......tough choice
@@deadlysin1174 nope, still classed as mid since I get an extra shot on most courses, on the verge of being low but not quite
Everyone at my golf club has their own advise ( OF COURSE) The club champ do tell me that if he could work with me more often one on one I would be low 80s/high 70s and club champ, Also said my iron shots are unreal," nobody here hits a 7 iron 200 + Advise? Help?
Confused, what T300 irons you referring? According to the Titleist website the 7 iron is 29 degrees and the 8 iron at 33 degrees.
Cobra Forge Tec…….thought that would make the list based on your recent review with Nicks Copper finish irons.
What do you think of the Taylormade M2 iron set? Looking to buy them
Not bad. But don’t feel the softest
@@JamesRobinsonGolf thank for the reply! Would you not recommend then?
I’d try for something softer mate
Can you tell me price of Tyler irons and one three five woods or ping sets okay.
Great review James ...I play Ping G425 irons and I love them a lot !! Cheers from Canada East Coast !!
Great video as always. Keep up the outstanding work.
Yep, very interesting but still to expensive for me, what about budget irons?
hi James great review...thought maybe PXG Gen 3 XP or Gen 4 XP would make it in there..love my PXG Gen 2 SGI 's but its time for an upgrade...and thinking of going from midsize grips to oversize due to the arthritis in my hands....your thoughts ?...cheers from western Canada
According to Titleist website, the T300 7 iron is 29 degrees, not 34.
Ping G425 should be on this list. Love my set. Not too mention the 425 max driver being the best I’ve ever owned
Ive also got the ping g425 max driver and snapped two shafts at the hosel in 3 months just like Bubba
Hi Alex you need to stop hitting the tee blocks Dickey
Did you ever do the top 5 budget irons video?
Love these top 5 videos and I’m looking forward to the next one
Do you hit these better than the Mizunos you use? Why, then, don't you play them? This is something I don't understand. Yes, I have heard about the mysterious and subtle "workability" - but I have also heard - often - that the scorecard doesn't show how, it only show how many.
I think with these type of irons it can come down to gapping and how you organise the lower end of your bag. If you are blasting an 8 iron 175 yards plus then you can start to run into an issue towards the wedge end, like needing a 45, 50, 54 and 60 degree wedge depending on how you like to play the higher lofted clubs
Great you tube … love the ping iron
I’m a beginner so… when the irons are forgiving that means that when you hit it bad it doesn’t really affect the shot/makes it a good shot but u can only hit it straight. The pros irons aren’t forgiving but they know the sweet spot and can make to ball curve or something like that. I’m I right??
Hi James. In your opinion why did the PING 425 not make the list?
G710 just more forgiving Tom.
Tim
@@JamesRobinsonGolf Thanks James. Love the content.
Im surprised that the Cleveland Launcher is not mentioned.. Add to that they are also cheaper than the any of the 5 irons mentioned. Maybe Its because its not one of the usual established brands but I feel they are by far the most forgiving clubs you can use.
What are your thoughts on the TaylorMade m4 2021 irons?
I got fitted into the Maverick Max about a years ago when I picked up golf more seriously. Now, they feel a bit chunky and I think my golf has improved enough that I might need something else...or am I being a magpie???
That's a good reason for a beginner or high handicap golfer to go the budget route.
Does the jpx range feel like a mizuno or no I’ve been thinking about them for my self
Cheers James , first time here . Enjoyed the video,so I subscribed 👍🍻🇨🇦
Have ping g410 irons James do you think I could hit taylormade p790 irons the new ones like the looks or are they for 12 and below handicappers or anybody
I thought the number 1 was going to be the Srixon ZX5s. Those look better than all of the top 5. Would like to see Foxy try them out. Cheers
Agreed. The Srixon ZX Irons are freaking amazing and totally underrated IMHO.
I’m a +15 handicap and I have the sim one and I don’t really like it do you think I should go for the ping
I have the same set and love them
Great clubs but the club faces of mine from 2019 caved in after 2 years of steady use. TM are great for technology but seems their build quality is suspect
I have the cobra s3 irons from about a decade ago and they still help me hit under 85
The Callaway big Bertha irons graphite shafts are super,
The ping Woods work for me. 3,/5.
Love your videos. What about Ping G425 irons tho????
Hoping my new irons are on the list...doubt it I could not get by the look of my new clubs. King Tour MiM.
What about the Srixon ZX4?
I’m in the process of deciding which set of irons to get and the DCBs is one of my top two the other was JPX 921 HM I love the look of both but the HM edge out the DCB is that enough to make the decision to purchase ldk
Which one did you hit better?
Pretty much the same the HM seemed to have a bit more distance but the dispersion was just a fraction difference both are great clubs just undecided
