  • A 2013 Dodge Challenger that's SUPPOSED to be black, but is very GRAY instead.
This car belongs to the best friend I've ever had. We've worked together, fought side by side and he's ALWAYS had my back - pulled my backside out of the fire more than once, as well.
Anyway, he bought the Challenger brand new, BUT his isn't really a "car person" and while the car has been though a few automatic washes, it has NEVER, EVER been polished or even waxed - to the point where the clear coat is now silver, making the entire car look like a shade of gray (even on the sides).
We've been out of touch for over 15 years, when a mutual friend messaged me and said to contact my friend. I called him several times over the last week or so talking for many hours. He learned that I am STILL detailing cars, so we set up a day for him to come to my house and I would give it a look to see if it could be "saved."
There was mud all over the lower half of the car, and the paint is SO ROUGH, the mud clung like cement (you DON'T want to know what I had to do to remove it), but there was no way I could properly evaluate the car until after it was washed. When I was FINALLY done washing the car and dried it off, I saw the horror of the silver clear coat. Still, I said "Yes, I can 'fix' this' (vast improvement is what I'm hoping for). So we pulled it into the garage, and I proceeded to work on the hood. I STARTED with the rotary on a speed between 3 & 4, using a polishing pad (all I have for the rotary - until the store opens in 3 hours, when I'll be picking up a few WOOL cutting pads - yes, it's THAT bad). I ended up bumping the speed of the rotary to 5 (one level below Max), and only using the weight of the buffer, worked on the hood. Even with no pressure on the buffer, there was SO MUCH oxidation, the friction was causing the rotary to bog slightly - you could HEAR it slow down.
This video is "Part I." I flat out told him that JUST the compounding was going to be a TWO FULL DAY job. So we agreed that he would drop it off early Friday morning and check in with me Saturday night (or I will call him if I just happen to finish before then).
Of course 1&Done Compound was my "weapon" of choice, and it did GREAT. My problem is that this car will NEED rotary polished - the WHOLE CAR, and last night, I didn't have pads aggressive enough to do the job. Plus, the pads I have are thin and my backing plate is rigid, so I couldn't get into all the multiple curves and angles of the hood to get them properly polished. I'm expecting that a thick wool pad will get the job done and be able to "reach" all the little curves I couldn't get. I was able to "complete" the hood, BUT it's NOWHERE close to being done & ready to protect ... BUT there was a 1,000 times improvement in the appearance - even "unfinished." My friend just kept staring at my Camaro and back to his car and said he HOPES I can get his car to 50% of what mine looks like. If I do that, he'll be over the moon with joy. I believe I can get it better than just "50%."
NOW, it's a matter of pride for me to bring the car back. Like I told him before he went home: "It might be YOUR car, but it's MY reputation riding on this!" I'm afraid you're all going to have to wait until next Saturday/Sunday to see if I was successful.
As a side note, he called me when he got home and said he kept "trying" to get into an accident, because he was so awed by the improvement on the hood (even unfinished), he couldn't stop staring at it instead of watching where he was going.

When you mention taking 2 days to do a job - most people would look at you like you have 2 heads, lol...
They just don't get it. It's happened to me. Plenty of times, I get that telling a client a job will take 8 hours. They act incredulous.
As for fogged interior windshield glass, my understanding is that it is from gasses leeching from the dashboard vynal and interior plastics. Sun exposure and heat exacerbates the issue.
Stuff is a bitch to clear...

When people use an oily dressing on the dash it makes the inside windows really bad 😂

@@butchc9226 I did one video on the best way to clean glass. I've since modified it a little and will have to make a new video soon. I cleans the DIRTIEST glass with one cleaning.

My friend was MORE than receptive at the two-day estimate and didn't even flinch. He's going to get a cheap rental car and drop off his car and keys at the house so I can 'have at it.' Maybe it's because he has a clue that QUALITY work takes time, or maybe it's because he was watching me work on the hood and saw how difficult this job is going to be. He's an extremely smart man, so I'm pretty sure it's the former. *I* personally think the hood will be the hardest part of the car, because it has a ton of complex curves and multiply-curved area that are difficult to put a polisher to, the rest of the car is all simple curves and mainly flat.
And I'm ALMOST positive, HE'S so excited about seeing my initial results, I'll be getting the car LONG before Friday🤣

I just did this to my son's black 2013 Dodge Charger RT that paint was in the same condition( A few deep scratches, oxidation, contamination stuck in the clear coat, and heavy hazing ( grey looking). I synthetic clay barred it aggressively with lubricant. Hit it with Turtle Wax Graphene 1 step compound/finish with a URO 50/50 (6 1/2 inch pad) with my new Hercules cordless brushless 20 volt ROTARY (On sale at Harbor Freight for $80.00 tool only), then hit it with Turtle Wax Graphene Max Wax with a jeweling foam pad . The follow week I hit it with Turtle Wax Graphene Flex Wax spray on. It was my past two week project of mine. His car now looks like a Black mirror...

I'm SUPPOSED to get the car today or tomorrow. I picked up a heavy cut wool pad AND a finishing wool/mix pad (I plan on starting with the finishing pad - less is best!), using the 1 & Done compound. THEN, if it turns out how I believe it will, switching to the orbital and a medium polishing pad (one that I NORMALLY use for liquid/paste wax APPLICATION), and the 1 & Done to finish it off.
Then if all goes well, a coat of Ceramic/Graphene Paste Wax - topped by Flex Wax.

The gloss, depth of paint, beading, and sheathing are insane...AUTO ZONE has the Turtle Wax Graphene MAX Wax on sale now for $10.88 out the door...I just bought 2 more bottles...It's normally 30.00 a bottle...Get it while ya can...

If that's the worst you've ever had to do you've had a pretty easy career.

Not so much a career, just an OCD enthusiast. What made it bad, was that *I* wasn't prepared for it. The heaviest cut pads that I have for my rotary are light polishing and for the orbital a few Urofiber 50/50 pads - NO WHERE near aggressive enough. So I picked up a wool heavy cutting pad and a wool/acrylic "finishing' pad for the rotary. These are MUCH thicker than my foam or Urofiber pads and should let me finish off the hood. The rest of the body is more or less flat panels and I should be able to use the wool/acrylic pad for the "heavy" cutting.
