- PARM 1 and PARM 2 DM-12 anti-tank mines are in use with Ukraine. How do they work?
I thought it would be interesting in this video to take a look at an unusual, but lethal and useful weapon which Ukraine is operating. The PARM-2 mine. This was sent as part of an aid package which Germany claimed included 2,000 mines, so we don’t know how many of those were PARM-2s. It’s a very interesting weapon, differering from the usual mines as we shall see.
PARM stands for PanzerAbwehrRichtMine. Or, anti-tank directional mine. They are off route mines which when triggered fire small, fin-stabilized rockets. Different than usual anti-tank mines which are triggered and detonated under the vehicle. These aren’t the only off-route anti-tank mines in service-for example, Poland has the MPB.
The mine first entered service as the PARM 1 in 1988. It is mounted on a s small, flexible tripod. This tripod can spin 360 degrees, elevate 90 degrees or depress 45 degrees, allowing the system to be rigged and set up in a number of different locations.
It is suitable for both protective use-such as protecting a vital convoy route, or tactical use. Intended to disrupt the movement of enemy forces.
The mine can be fired by command, pressure plate or by a tripwire. With the tripwire, it is an optical cable placed on the road. Once a heavy vehicle rolls over it, this cable then triggers the ignition of the charge. This fires the projectivle to the target.
Now, they don’t have to strike the first weapon in a convoy either. PARM-2 can be set to skip 9 vehicles before detonating, allowing for it to target key vehicles in the center of the convoy. For example, if a recon patrol spots an enemy convoy with the priority target being, say, a fuel truck-the lead vehicle such as a BMP-1 can pass over it, the next vehicle can and so on, until the priority target arrives. Then, it detonates.
The PARM 1 has an effective range of 2 to 40 meters. The PARM 2 is upgraded with a range of 100 meters. The PARM 2 also has an upgraded warhead allowing for armor penetration of 750 millimeters and even capabilitiy against reactive armour.
For point of reference, the BMP-1 has armor thickness of 33 millimeters. The T-72 has armor thickness of around 700mm at the front of the turret and hull. The BTR-80-10mm in the hull.
These are powerful weapons. Fast too-once triggered, they travel at 120 meters per second. They also quite light and easily transported-weighing just 20 kg. Meaning they can be quickly and easily taken to an ambush point.
So, there we have the PARM 2. I think it’s quite a cool weapon and worth having a closer look at how it works. If you enjoyed the video, I’d appreciate it if you’d click like and also subscribe.
Cheers
One little interesting fact: The glass fibre cable detecting the apporaching enemy vehicle cant be detected by a metal detector. Means that, if you dont dig it up or rip it out of the ground, you wont find it until its too late.
That was a complicated sentence...
But it made sense!
00:17 In 🇩🇪 -> Panzer = tank | Abwehr = anti, defense | Richt = directional | Mine = mine || = directional anti-tank mine = PanzerAbwehrRichtMine = PARM
Actually I think PARM is short for parmesan cheese.
What a nasty little device. And that tripwire function is pretty cool too.
Effectively what Germany has done is over-engineer the IED. But it's good, because lashing artillery shells together is time consuming and wastes ammunition.
That's a good comparison. A more effective and less discriminate IED.
Oh I can think of a few clever ways to hide this little tri-pod of death.
@@bleakfeather7004 Yeah, the fact it can be rotated and angled different ways opens up so many possibilities for destruction and places to hide it.
This mine can be easily placed even in urban areas. Inside a building or on top of a building. That 45° angle makes it a very dangerous weapon.
And if you are using a couple of them...preprammed lets say first vehicle and "put in number " the last vehicle...upsi road blocked...and prearranged artillery...it becomes nasty realy ....realy fast
Another weapon being sent to Ukraine I had no idea existed! The skipping vehicles part was genious!
Yeah, it's a very well designed mine.
@@suchomimus9921 skipping vehicles also allows several mines to be set up to strike the column simultaneously
@@MisterW0lfe, Good idea.
That's a vital part of the design. Otherwise, they could have an expendable vehicle lead the convoy. You can use your imagination as to just what that might entail. MACVSOG used to use this tactic to protect themselves against anti personnel mines that might be hidden on trails. They would take a viet cong prisoner and tie their hands and gag them, and make them walk ahead of them on the trail at gunpoint.
@@Johnconno I have but no idea what it has to do with my comment.
That explains what I thought were missile strikes but were called mine hits .
Super interesting, never knew this kind of mine before.
You should have put a link of this to the video on what you did yesterday on PARM-2 Mine Hits Russian Vehicle Supposedly Carrying Officers. It just compliments it so much!
Good suggestion. I will switch the "suggested videos" at the end to this.
I think these lethal mines are emminently suitable for use in Ukraine against Russian invading forces. Its the sort of truly wicked device that would make you think twice about wanting to travel anywhere in Ukraine in any Russian armoured vehicle.
Thanks for this I actually really wanted to know about this mine
Devilishly clever. Perfect.
They recently got a senior officer group on the southern front NW of Meriopol...the funny part of the 2nd vehicle rolled over because the driver paniced and took the curve far too fast and killed half the people in his vehicle as well...
Important topic, thanks.
no worries. Glad you liked the vid
damn they are handy and super usable. You could setup a complete ambush, making the enemy fire at ghosts in panic. Send more! It should detect the weight also. And be able to skip way more
its likely what initiated the very famous ambush near brovary (north east of Kyiv) in the initial stage of the war.
oh dear, I'm going to have to help on this one regarding the German language; PARM stands for "PanzerAbwehrRichtMine,", phonetically this is said something like " pantser-abvehr-richt-meeneh " the richt is said something like ri as in re in english and cht as in loch the ch bit but with the Scottish accent. That's how it's said. It's comprises of several words making up one word, and those words are (this is where it gets self explanatory):
Panzer (Tank/Armour) P
Abwehr (defence/repulsion) A
Richt (directional) R
Mine (Mine!) M
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info--German words are very trick for me to grasp. Good to have the meaning of the abbreviation--cheers
@@suchomimus9921 yes, being half German half English I can sort that sort of thing. The German language is tough especially with longer words. Words are often long in German (which we brits laugh about) but only because over time they have simply joined several words together to describe something. When one speaks German one does however often immediately see what is meant with the word as in this example that describes all aspects of the function... in one word. :D
Very timely info based on what you showed us yesterday. One question for anyone that knows.. is it remotely controlled to fire at the 9th vehicle, or would that need to be known well in advance of the arrival of the convoy? Keep up the good work.
It is preprogrammed. So, can be se tup to impact when the 9th vehicle presses the detonator cable.
Seems like a very flexible ORC stopper. Has to suck being an ordinary foot soldier these days.
Great piece of kit that has apparently scored quite a few hits.
Fascinating
Thanks for sharing, Suchomimus.
cheers
Nice
They seem overly complicated compared to regular AT mines but at the same time they look so cool that I can't help but love them more lol. Plus, the more advanced computing in it allows for some real cool possibilities. I could see these attached to a camera or laser sensor so you could "mine" a road from a slight distance.
Like he said it can be detonated when the target vehicle drives over a fiber optic cable, command detonated, or detonation via infra red sensors. And since it is a directed mine, I think it can hardly be compared to an ordinary anti-tank mine. You can shoot them out of roadside ditches or down from buildings and no longer have to rely on the road itself in order to hide it. It is more of an industrially produced IED than a simple mine.
The video of the kill this thing achieves is hella impressive.
awesome
So its basically the father of all claymore mines? Cool
Claymore predates the PARM
@@Mugdorna I think he knows that, i think he was just referring to it like the more badass, big daddy Claymore mine, not that it was older
Things look like freakin lazerbeams
The AT4 is also propert to be a roadside mine. Note the shortest distans to target, and lets party!
These things are remarkable
Never even heard about this one before. Thank you 🙏 Slava Ukraini ❤️🇺🇦
Hi you do great videos, but please normalise your audio, the volume jumps from low to high and vice-versa.
cheers
i recently saw a video of Russian armour being hit by a PARM. The shaped charge cut right though both sides of the vehicle.
Im my opinion the most interesting feature is that PARM hit the enemy vehicle in the side and does not explode under the front wheel or the mine roller.
Deutsche Qualität.
Essentially a platter mine for professionals
they can also hit from behind the convoy.
Your videos are informative, however, please attend to the audio quality of the videos. The sound is faint and varies which ruin the overall quality of the video and information there in.
You got any for sale ?? used of course.
We will deliver the new fiber optic cable
With a little imagination and RC enthusiast mechanical knowledge you could easily turn this into a duel system with a sagger missile type weopon designed into it aswell as being a mine thats dumb fired...
*dual. Duel is when you stand back to back then walk 20 paces, turn and fire at each other. Or a sword fight.
@@teeanahera8949 sorry i bad, your right my spelling is not the greatest, but im sure people will get the drift, but thanks for pointing DUAL out...
Parm stands vor panzer abwehr richt mine. I dunno what u said, but tim sure u butchered the pronounciation 🙈 but very interesting video and concept
Sorry but I laughed my ass off when you tried to say "Panzer-Abwehr-Richtmine" it is very difficult to say so no hate
Yes, I'm pretty certain I butchered it bad.
@@suchomimus9921 Try to say it like pun-sir up-where rigged-me-neh :)
Be careful Suchi. 2m is damn close to be when you chuck one of them.
Yeah I seen a lot of different version of these directional mine sometimes they even look like ordinary box with shape charges inside them instead of having a RPG Style flying out it shoots a shaped charge dream of molten whatever you call it to penetrate the armor also with different kind of ways to detonate them
Some kinds can have acoustic microphones to pick up the sound of heavy tanks or armored vehicles ordinary tripwires, pressure plates, manned triggered it's crazy on a different types of mines and anti-personnel weapons there is out there from the past and present and onto the future
One source said this one had a microphone. But it was the only one saying the PARM did, so I didn't include it in case it was inaccurate. But that sounds pretty cool--I expect it is sensitive enough that it wont detonate on cars, lorries, tractors etc.
Don't know exactly how it does it but it Maybe the sounds of tanks or heavy armored vehicles are recorded in imprinted into a system so it can identify what is friend an foe just my idea don't really know how they work just guessing it give me a idea to look up about it now

yo brother, U got the like - I got the superior deal, .. keep em' in flight(videos, enlight)
To see this beast in action check out the video "PARM-2 Mine Hits Russian Vehicle Supposedly Carrying Officers". Spectacular.
Why do they call it a "mine"?
"Figurative meaning "ruin or destroy by slow or secret methods""
"in reference to old tactic of tunneling under enemy fortifications to blow them up".
in Russian "mine" is used kinda similarly to a granade sometimes. For example a mortar is a "mine thrower".
@@Fin4L6are Mortar in Russian is two words for two type of weapons/mortars: "Мортира"(mortira) from latin word mortarium for old big howitzer alike mortars and "Миномёт" ->"mine thrower" for portable modern alike infantry mortars.
Polish name for mine is "mina" and "mina" in Polish is also an expresion on your face... So you can wonder as a Polish person if this name have something to do with a look on someone face when he just heard a strange sound under his feet after he stepped on a mine...
IED is term applied to when the enemy uses them, but the enemy lacks the wealth to have better product promotion and advertising

how are they deployed? can they be deployed remotely with an artillery round, or do they require to be set up in person?
obviously some has to set them up on the side of action, how else do you want to get the alignment right and the trigger cable set up...
Did you even watch the video?
Something bad has been happening to your audio as of late of time.
I have been using my works recording room, which I thought would be better since it is soundproof But when I listen back there's a sort of faint buzz.
I think I will switch to recording from my laptop again.
Combine it with antipersonel mines around it.
It's pronounced decrease, not decress......
The Armourer's Bench
"effective range 70m-80m" where mentioned in this video Polish MPB is effective up to 300m because it is like a bigger brother of the mine that you wanted to claim as "more powerful"... MPB-ZN is 45kg...

The Russians already got their hands on it at least a month ago..the amount of r&d that is being transferred to Russia(and most likely China) through these "donations" is mind blowing.
By the time they could reproduce anything high tech, NATO will have something better. Russia couldn't likely afford it anyway. China's QC is garbage.
This stuff is like 40 years old in design, if Russia and China don't know how to make something this simple already, they've got bigger problems.
They were making this tech from milk churns in Crossmaglen N Ireland in the 1980s. Its basic chemistry and physics dude.

750 millimeters ? LOL.. that's almost 30 inches of armor? I'm going to call BullSHIT on that. What tank has almost 3 feet of armor?
Effective thickness compared to homogenous steel armor. There is no point in saying the actual thickness of the composite armor since there are many types of composites that perform differently.
