- Been using Void successfully for a couple of days. I've moved my Parabola rice over and am enjoying what I'm seeing. Fast boot times, and only minimal trouble getting what I want installed.
Void is a rolling release distro, which can be installed either with a desktop environment or in a minimalist install. This makes it similar in framework to Arch, but uses runit instead of systemd and xbps instead of pacman.

Can you explain? What is parabola rice?
@@maheshsundaram8012 Parabola GNU/Linux-libre is an Arch Linux-based distribution comprising of 100% free software. It's goal is to be free Arch and it's approved by the Free Software Foundation. "Ricing" refers to customising and theming user interfaces, especially window managers.

I've just installed Void on a usb key to test drive it today. Very very
thorough. I come from ~3 years of Arch followed by ~3 years of Manjaro,
my current system on two machines.
Fast, no nonsense, my beloved i3 is in the repos, spacemacs running
smooth, I definitely could be happy with this on my system(s). As an
ex-Arch user from the pre-systemd era, having a meaningful /etc/rc.conf

Void ROCKS! I run a Void openbox machine and a Void Mate machine...so far, so cool and so fast!!! Nice review-subscribed.
Wonderful distro! @VoidLinux is my daily driver since 2014. No looking back!
Hi Luke many thanks for this as I'm getting bored with Arch and was thinking of going back to Gentoo for awhile and then I remembered the lonely nights of compiling (I know a bit exaggerated but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about) the other option was Slack which I am not really familiar with but many have said it's great and with the extra tools available makes installation of programmes fairly easy. I am by no means a hopper in fact I've been running Arch for nearly 4 years possibly longer I do occasionally dip my foot in another distro then end up just coming back to Arch. This is interesting and I'm tempted. 20 thumbs up for this you've peaked my interest :-)
base-devel for compilers
the rest is just general linux knowledge, doesn't need to be distro-specific ("googling about void")
Void? + very fast. - uses runit. + very easy to switch init system. + It's the fastest booting distro. + With dinit it boots in 3 seconds (2 seconds to load the kernel/initramfs, 1 second to load dinit)

nice! I have been dockerizing my applications so I am looking to switch my distro (sabayon T_T) so the minimalistic approach looks ideal
i would like if you made a video of how you get your latex setup working, i.e. which packages, commands, vim plugins, latex libraries, etc. on top of the videos you already have about using latex.
sabayon use binary & source packages same time, too.
also smaller repo of particular distro = means disadvantage.
Hi, @ 3:32, how did you open the live preview side by side so fast? Is it an i3 keybinding you've set up to open the main.pdf?
Does your compton.conf make the windows transparent? If I just copy it to my ~/.config/compton.conf and If I use i3 aswell
Random thing
Have you considered pronouncing 'exbps' as 'exbeeps'
I have 100% no idea why, it's just something that popped into my head
hmm nice
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
The logic behind this is flawed. The analogy you used can be easily reversed since the Linux kernel is essentially what makes a random assortment of code an OS. GNU corelibs cannot form an OS (unless the hurd kernel leaves its comfy spot in development hell where its been setting for the past few decades).
If we do follow your reasoning however then why don't we just name every distro besides gentoo and slack systemd/pulse-audio/gnu/linux since both pulse audio and systemd form a crucial parts of most of the more mainstream distros.
Also you get gnu component free distributions like Android and LineageOS.
Lastly just call it Linux, being insistent on calling it gnu/linux just adds more confusion to new users.

Linux is slowly turning into a non gnu os.
If your running a minimal distro, what's your ram usage? I use Mint Linux 19, and I've got mine down to a little over 600mb at start up. I have 16gb so, it's not a huge concern as far as usage for what I need, I am a bit concerned about the stuff I don't need. Thus I limit my start up services in the gui and I have installed a newer kernel from ORG to help this . But I am just curious what your experience has been?
Nice video mate, it is also good to see a distro that could be an alternative to arch. Will you be doing review of the x220 that you used it this video or will you wait for it to be librebooted ?
uploading a comparison video between it and the X200 now actually ;-)
Hopefully if the X220 does become Librebooted, I'll be able to do a video librebooting it too. That's a request I get a lot.
Good to hear :D I guess you could always flash coreboot on it temporarily until libreboot supports it (I think you could even neutralized me with some script) as it is definitely better than original bios and you could make a video during that process. I would love to see the x220 being flashed as I probably won't get one any time soon.
6:06 CPU usage 39%? What is going-on?
I think it comes from screencasting
What about nixos? I havent tried void or nixos yet but both seems interesting as hell.
I can't get NetworkManager setup for the life of me. I created the symlink but "sv restart NetworkManager" says "unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist" can't find any solution online.
Hey Luke, I love your videos.
I have been using void for a couple of weeks now and I tried to follow your tutorial on how to intsall and use LaTex, but I can't get the vim preview working. How did you manage to do it?
Cheers from Spain and good luck with your channel.
Hi Pablo, do you mean installing the vim-live-latex-preview or the LaTeX packges themselves?
Luke Smith thanks for the reply! I meant the vim-latex-preview, but I already figured it out. I had to manually recompile vim with python support.
This is a good review , very lucid. I am gonna subscribe to you I have the feeling i can lern a thing or two about linux. :) from you.
What's that desktop called?
Void seems cool, and I see a few videos about it from a year or 2 back. But I've been trying it recently, and a lot of things seem broken in it (things I see that work in the old videos). Very disappointing.
Nothing is "broken" in it. You must not know the basic of operating a computer lol.
What made you chose void over gentoo? Do you plan to compile from source at all? I've seen some videos of gentoo users with crazy fast boot times as well due to very efficient compilation of OpenRC.
I wanted the ability to install binaries easily if necessary. I do want the option of installing things from source though. I am interested in boot times, but I may be able to get some impressive boot times here anyway, we'll see.
Thanks for the reply. I've played around with gentoo on some of my machines and there are limited binaries available for some stuff that takes a ridiculously long time to compile (like firefox or chromium). The main thing that drew me to try gentoo was how powerful portage is. How does xbps compare? Keep up the videos by the way, your opinions on things are always interesting to listen to.
Hey, pretty interesting. I noticed you only have 25G for root, do you find that that is enough nowadays for root? Even on something like arch? This is always something i struggle with and i always end up giving 80gb to root when i probably don't need to. Great video, been going through your latex tutorial, amazing!
Wow lol 80BG is a whole lot... The most I've ever given to / is 40GB and I never ever used even 20GB. So I find 25GB plenty.
Would you say that 30GB is enough for a developer? Thanks
I suppose; I don't really know what you'd be keeping there in any case! If you do your work in /home I don't think you'd need much more space.
Arch Wiki recommends 20-25 btw, but most systems install less than 10GB paritions and get along find.
Ok, thanks! (one more time)
I'm currently running Void Linux + XFCE on my laptop, because I'm not entirly sure how to handle presentation with i3/xrandr, because of the multimonitor thing. Do you just connect your laptop to the projector and fire up aRandr quickly and get multimonitor working or do you have a script set up for that?
Yeah I just hook a screen up and use arandr. I've been meaning to write a script, but arandr works fine.
Alright good to know. Was kinda scared of using i3 for presentation stuff, but arandr should just work fine, which means that I can get XFCE of my laptop 👌
If you xrandr, once you find the command that works for your situation, you can put that command into a script that you can run when ever you are IN that situation. I have a directory of scripts for different resolution and wallpaper settings. When I boot my laptop on the dock at my office, I can simply run [sh scripts/res_work.sh]. That one script disables the laptops LCD display, enables all 3 external monitors, sets them to 1920x1080, arranges them appropriately, and sets my wallpaper.
could you make a video about how you set up your computer to look like that?

looks like I will need to check this out. Though I like the Cinnamon Desktop, which depends on Systemd I think.
madgamerman Cinnamon runs on void. There's even a Cinnamon iso.
alittleforgettable Is Void still supported?. It's forums look dead.
madgamerman Yes it is supported and actively developed by some very passionate developers. The community is small, but certainly active for it's size (and its growing). Remember that void is still very young.
alittleforgettable Going to install it over my other Distro today and see how it goes I just hope it sees's my Windows partitions.
madgamerman Install gives you complete control over partitioning and mount points. If you dont touch the windows partitions you should be okay. Good luck, feel free to pm me.
the problem of runit in void is that you have to manually enable all dependencies of a service to make it work. otherwise it will be in a startup loop that might burden the cpu.
Thanks. It's a good tip before I enter the Void ;-)

Does it mean no update on comfy arch?
I still use Parabola and Arch. Besides, the differences between the actual configuration of my Arch and Void setup is minimal, so it's not like my Arch-using subscribers are losing anything.
I do plan on putting out an update to my Arch auto-rice and perhaps a Parabola edition, which would have to be a little different under the hood.
But how do you fill it?

Any reason why you use bash? Instead of an alternative Shell
No reason. The advantages of other shells seem marginal to me compared to the effort I'd use switching over my configs to them.
Fair enough, tbh i only realling use zsh for the syntax hightlighting and autocomplete.
zsh has better autocomplete than bash? (but yes, bash is bloated.. they say - probably true)
Cacalari Bus sorry autocomplete was the wrong term, I meant autosuggestion of previously typed commands. Which is done through a plugin.
They all have some pretty nice advantages. tcsh (and csh) let you search partial commands. For example if Item 250 in my history is xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources and I type xrd then hit up, xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources will show up even if other things are between that result and whatever I last typed. Zsh can be configured to do this too. Occasionally I have to do a bulk rename of 20+ files and it gets tedious if you do it manually with mv. Zsh has a command called zmv (you have to use autoload to get it though) that lets you do bulk renaming so I can append a number or change extensions on all the files in a directory with one command. Outside of that there aren't any major advantages one way or the other for me.
I'm wondering, since you did this video over 2 1/2 years ago, are you still using void? What is your current view of void now? If you're still using void, it would be great to see a video of what you've learned about it, all those lessons from the school of hard knocks, & what developers have changed for the better (or worse).
To enable in systemd is to start at start up -- now hint you don't know systemd

Was that a 20 character password?
I'm currently switching to Gentoo and improving my setup at the same time. More rice, less bloat, more terminal, trying out your recommendations.
I tried OpenBSD and dwm but honestly, that level of autism is just unrealistic for everyday use. I'd rather have pulseaudio than have to script plugging in all usb audio devices. And the relatively bigger support GNU/Linux systems have, like having my thinkpad trackpoint auto configured to emulate scrolling from the middle button. And dwm was just less convenient than i3 as well.
I switched to void!
I don't like the ThinkPad x220 simply because of one reason already... It does not have the TrackPoint only, it has a trackpad AND nipple! Sure, choice is good but I *think* in comparison to a trackpad, TrackPoints are boss and have no limitations.
Then disable the trackpad, snowflake. No one's stopping you.
Yeah, I know. I may sound dumb, and I probably do but when I look at the trackpad I am sad to have disabled a feature ;D
Yeah I have the trackpad disabled myself. The good thing about the X220 is that while it does have a trackpad, the keyboard et al. is still the same size as the X200's, so there's no lost room.
No need to, I am happy with my ThinkPad x61s. Of course I could live with a trackpad, but...

You got jew'd, mate. You should have sticked to the Core2 Duo.
Luke Smith You should maybe give this project a go: github.com/corna/me_cleaner/
It's and ME cleaner, maybe you could record yourself trying to apply the patch and review it
(big fan of the channel btw)
Nihad Yeah I'm aware of the me_cleaner, but it doesn't actually eliminate all of the parts of the ME. It's a great improvement and gets rid of most of the components, and if Librebooting this thing doesn't work out I'll probably just coreboot it and run the me_cleaner.
its kinda funny who needs an SSD once everythngs preloaded into Ram, you cant tell the difference.
Other than documenting the firmware, Libreboot won't be able to do much more. The ME can't be disabled on Core i series chips and the firmware requires a strong cryptographic signature to run. The best that can be done is to minimize the amount loaded as it's modular. Libreboot's taking the extra step of reverse engineering the code to understand what it does, but it won't be possible to alter it unless the crypto key magically appears, which doesn't seem to be in the cards.
"jew'd"? - Even braindead nazis are now learning how to use this interweb thing, I see.
