I follow you guys because of your traveling content. Im not watching to see you guys drink. I think most or your viewers will agree. Im from SC USA and have been to Azores twice and went to Madeira last October (during the fires unfortunately) didn't get to see all the great places you talk about. Ive never watched any of you videos to see you get wasted. Keep up the great traveling content. That's what your channel was built on and that's what your viewers want to see.
I also struggled with alcohol. It was so bad I found it easier to log the days I didn't drink rather than drink. I woke up on morning with pancreatitis. I went to hospital they told me I had to quit drinking. Talk about having a life changing moment F me. 13 days later I got out. Quit drinking for about 2 months...One beer won't hurt, two beers won't hurt, one shot will be fine. Almost exactly one year later went back in the hospital. I struggled with this for another 3 years. In 2013 I had my last drink. The damage to my pancreas is permeant. I still struggle today with finding the fun in things. Im an open book with alcohol. I'm a closed dusty book on the shelf without. If it wasn't for my wife id probably not be here. Amalie is going to be your support and she will play a major roll in your success. Keep it up its not a sprint it's an endurance race and you'll be fine with Amalie by your side.

Never watched you for the drinking to be honest. After recently travelling long term i shelved the alcohol for a number of months (budgetary reasons) and after a while you wonder why you ever bothered with it in the first place. You'll get there. Its a lifelong habit and that mindset is hard to change. I had the same with smoking. Wish you the best of luck with it 👍

The main reason that leads me to watch your videos is a set of things, such as your friendliness, sincerity and humor that you always put into the content you cover on your channel, wrapped in the excellence of photography and editing. As for the rest... if you already know, never forget; Addiction to alcohol, drugs and gambling is forever, what can make a difference is having this reality always present in your head every day, as all it takes is a small temptation and consequent slip-up, for everything to go back to the way it was before, even if it's been decades since you last stopped drinking, etc...
All the best to you and please continue to be happy :)

Those who like watching you being drunk will fall away. It is a fact that the early phase of recovery to feel that things are boring. Life is not boring even without alcohol. I guarantee you that if you hang in with recovery you will discover new parts of yourself. You guys are so talented. I am confident you’ll find a new direction for your channel.

My husband and I are from Canada and during our winters we sat drinking away our cold winter months day dreaming about living a better life…until we realized how much it was effecting us. We quit a year ago except for when we went to Maderia this past summer and had very little to drink. We love watching your videos. Not because of the drinking but because of your humour and all the crazy places you go. Drinking is overrated. Living your best life is where it’s at! You guys are doing a tremendous job of that!!

I am 12 years into the same journey. Drinking made me social and unconcerned about the judgement of others which made for fun and freedom. But I must say a life without hangovers is truly a gift. The other key to success is that you have a partner in crime that will stick by your side through this journey. I have the same support and love with me. Soon you will start to feel pride in your ability to abstain from alcohol and you will see drunk people in a whole new light and think OMG was I like that? Just don’t look at forever. Look at the challenges of the next 6 months and block by block you will be free. Ok mostly, 12 years later and I still would love to go have a beer with you. But non Alcoholic beer ain’t so bad.

I am a portuguese guy living in Copenhagen, so yes we kinda switched countries guys, and alcohol was not why I started following you. I started watching you because despite being Portuguese, you guys showed me places in my own country which I have never visited, I have learned that you can travel and work remotely, I got to know brands and products through your sponsored videos and used discount codes and you also helped me understand Danes better while adapting to this new culture. You inspire people even when your content is not about traveling, like watching Amelia being a interior designer and having a great taste decorating the house. I know alcohol its part of danish culture, and it is very common in those rainy days, when the sun sets around 15 o'clock, to just have some friends over and enjoy the evening by having a drink but guys remember you are in Portugal, there's a lot to do to keep your mind busy. If you want to stop drinking, find a purpose, try to see how can the content become even better without it, don't think that it will become worst! Maybe you can start a healthier diet and make content about that, which will motivate others to do the same. So good luck Joen!! Gonna be waiting here for the next video with the title "como perder barriga de cerveja em dois meses" 😁

Do you guys know the age demographic of your audience? I'm 53, moved to Portugal 2.5 years ago...which is how I found you in the first place. Sure part of the fun of watching you two was to see what Portugal had to offer ...experiences, places to eat, places to see, etc. you were like tour guides inspiring the next bucket list of things to do here. Anyhow...depending on your audience here's what I would suggest/ real estate (eg. best new developments)...food (eg. best sushi in Portugal)... experience (eg. best sunset cruise... best sunset locations for photography)...best deals for tours...best festivals to see. Best private beach area for a picnic. Best coffee...etc. It doesn't have to cost the most...just the best experience of getting the most value possible. Best castle to explore...there's so many things you can feature and have fun with. When you feature others, the focus is not directly on you...rather the viewer gets the pleasure of watching you experience something that will inspire them to think...oh, I'd like to do that! oh...as for the alcohol, your future self will thank you for your positive change now.

I think you are going through FOMO more than anything. You both are kind and funny and always a joy to watch and listen to. Do not give in to the addiction just for views cuz in the long run it would be losing more than an audience.... Love you both!!! I prefer the walks and exploring your interests more than the partying, I can have more fun doing that part myself. I first started watching because you two are of similar interests to what my hubby and I enjoy and that hasn´t changed. RUclips does a terrible job of pushing creators to feel like they always got to be growing. Enjoy the ride more =)

Always hard to balance! I'm 77 now and use to NEVER have less than a full bottle of wine, very good wine, each day! But now, I just don't want to drink very much. Maybe a Manhattan twice a month, or 2 glasses of wine once a month. Each time I drink even this small amount, I realize I get very little out of it. 99% of the time, I very much like NOT DRINKING. And you know, the pleasure of drinking is not just from the alcohol, but the glass, the swirling, the motion, and while not as powerful as the alcohol, it does give some other satisfaction. How about a non-alcoholic beverage in a beautiful wine glass watching a sunset, maybe a beverage that almost tastes like wine, maybe similar level of acidity. This week I travel to France for 2 weeks and I probably will drink wine, but much less wine than I would normally have on vacation. Yes, not perfect, but then allows for a reset once back in the USA. I think that's what you probably will end up doing, enjoying a glass of wine from time to time, but mostly CHOOSING to not drink alcohol because of the health affects. Never need to get ANYWHERE near S---faced. Just pretty stupid I'm sure you both agree.

I'm 65 and doing the same as you for mostly the same reasons, but I still do like a glass or 3 of red with dinner.

I have watched your vids for years and have always skipped over the alcohol related parts. I could care less about drinking. It’s the creativity, your spirit and your insights that keep drawing me back. The vids are beautiful, interesting and fun.
I feel for people who struggle with alcoholism. It’s a very real and destructive illness and one should have lots of support when trying to change their life for the better.
Keep going, Joen! You will find your way through and you have not lost one square inch of your talents. Your Amalie is amazing. I hope I get to meet you both in Madeira…B Atlantis in March?

Hi guys. I’m in your boat Joan I’ve been drinking for years and only recently understood it isn’t what I thought it was it’s just all I know. I thought it was part of a good time also part of ignoring things that I know are wrong but don’t want to face… having a glass of wine or beer with dinner I love but it would always turn into more because I can’t have just one. I respect your honesty and approach to this because of being the same ( although I don’t think we are alone😂) your videos are more realistic when you drink because there are so many people like us but reality is we all see clearly and do better when we don’t go mad we just don’t see it after a drink. Keep up your dreams you’re living (which just so happens to be mine living in Portugal or Madeira) can’t wait for the next video thank you both for your honesty…. 👍🏽

Just my 2 cents. We only live one life, so I think we should find balance in everything... including having a day or two a week that we can enjoy a good glass of wine or a "caneca". Also, I think that restricting it to 100% makes everything more difficult and stressfull , as you told. be happy

Joen, I have felt the same way. My husband stopped drinking bc even a glass of wine or single cocktail would give him poor sleep and headaches. I struggled with the social/fun aspect as it was something we enjoyed together as an entertainment aspect of our lives both with food and socially. We're learning how to fill that void with "mocktails" to preserve the ritual while replacing alcohol with a healthier alternative. It's a huge adjustment for your friends as well as they learn to socialize with you in your new realm, but ours are becoming more supportive as we stick to our healthy goals and are adjusting themselves to us not drinking. Your body is thanking you and best wishes to a long and healthy life!

You have one of the few Portugal RUclips channels that has not become a negative wasteland, telling people why they shouldn’t move to Portugal anymore. This is a very important video many people should relate to. People who never drink will have a difficult time understanding that the social drinking culture is bigger than the drinking itself. It’s interesting to note a link to dementia for both heavy drinkers and non drinkers. That suggests to me that the social aspect of moderate drinking has health benefits. Yes, “chasing” that feeling is so true. We develop a tolerance to the extent that we might as well not be drinking at all. I do find that first or second drink is the sweet spot, though it’s too easy to continue drinking beyond that. Amelia is content with one drink; Joen three. Did you know females absorb alcohol differently than men?! Men generally need twice as many drinks as women to feel the same effect. Clicking glasses of Perrier with you! Cheers my friends! ❤

Your audience may be more diverse than you think judging on comments from the episode on having a child and advice from many mature viewers. Watching your show helps me connect with Madeira where we have a 2nd home. You are the eyes and ears of what's going on which is so helpful. Keep up the good work! Don't worry about the channel "dying." You're growing up and you've figured out that there's just so much luxury travel you can do before you get bored. There's much more to life. You're infinitely more interesting as you evolve. You are discovering the more complicated parts of being human. I love your new approach. I'm a bit older than you and am enjoying your journey. Stick with it. And Amalie I understand your anxieties about motherhood completely. I took the plunge and it's the best thing I ever did. Hard to explain why and it wouldn't make sense. But know you're not alone in your feelings. It's okay. Sending you good thoughts and all my best wishes!

Joen, don't forget that you and your life are the most important and precious things. You may lose some followers now, but you will gain a healthier life long term. And of course, some new followers will appear along the way which will feel identified with your content. In my opinion, your videos are getting better and better. It's easier to just do "lifestyle" videos like many others do, but do that and show more substance is not so simple. I love to see your human and vulnerable side, bringing important subjects to the table, speak about stuff freely, and I think we need that to remind us of who we are.
I totally agree with Amalie just have fun, you can do that without alcohol. Show us how it's done!

Best to drink less and to take in all the present! I have lost too many memories and that is sad! And your restaurant and food and tourist videos are the best! Thank you

your channel attracted me for other reasons than drinking escapades. I my self quiting on and off for health reasons . it's not easy. I can't imagine going back to visit Portugal and not have wine while there. I am just like you I can't have one glass of wine and stop. trying to talk myself into that I will drink during Portugal vacation and then stop when get home

    •  9 месяцев назад

I also have quit certain alcohols, specifically hard liquor like whiskey because it's extremely bad for your vital organs,so even though my doctor advised me of that info I decided to stop of my own accord.although I don't really understand why so many people say"when I start I can't just stop at one" ,who's counting?I guess if you have to keep track of how many drinking have then that maybe the definition of alcoholism.I don't, but then again I don't drink to get drunk. No judgement here just my personal observation.

some people can't stop at one not because of addiction to alcohol but perhaps don't deny themselves of the pleasure? I like my Red Breast Whiskey neat more than the daily recommended 2 once serving. and then there is Hennessy white ...
