Southgate had more control on the game before changing formation ,they were just supposed to improve on the speed of switching the ball just like what Germany did to Portugal,,, Italy was pressing compactly and with high pressure on the touchline hence reducing their team with.... Advantage of switching the ball is that it opens gaps and can cause break of formation structure as the opponent changes side of press. Southgate just panicked to conceding a goal which was a set piece not knowing nothing was wrong with his formation, he was supposed to motivate players to put more effort 9n the same game plan , perhaps he might not have got to penalties

England scored first which was great, after that they just sat back and invited Italy on to them they basically had players passing the ball outside England penalty area. Southgate was not sure to either stick or go for it. Yes England have very good skilful players but you have to play more then two to retain the ball which was their big problem. Pickford did not take any risks but just gave the ball back to Italy.

U forgot to talk about when how the game changed when mancicni took out immobile and puts in berradi so imagine can play false 9. Thats why Italy created goal scoring opportunities which lead to the 4-3-3 switch from South Gate so hendo and mount could apply pressure to verrati and Jorginho

His turns protecting the ball always remind me of Iniesta, I guess that's why Barcelona tried to get him in the past.
His major weakness is his tendency to get more yellow cards than he should, tends to miss important games due to this (usually it isn't because of bad challenges, he is just too amped up perhaps).

I think England missed a huge opportunity against Italy. Sure it has this apparently new offensive strategy (it isn't, Mancini just managed to make it work), but with its problem, such as draining energies (this very young team could handle it, and the calendar helped too), and making the team vulnerable of counterattacks. The brilliant part was trying always to defend and press in the opponent midfield. So counter attacks could be stopped early and even lead to goals, even shooting from out of the panalty area.
Now England knew all that, and with it's amazing players (that I think in a 1vs1 are on avarge better than Italy's players), didn't do enough.
England should have just done the same thing Italy was doing. Keep the ball (not that 70/30 ratio that is bound to lead to goal), get slowly further, and do counter attacks with ball on the ground, few short one-touch passes. That's how you can score against Italy. And they did it. Once. The other times they were just not up to the tactical task. They got kind of close to scoring again, but Mancini's strategy eventually caught up.
With humility, Galles, Austria, Belgium and Spain all tried to adapt their game to stop Italy, and they did it better than England. They never had the luxury of scoring first, showing this way how dangerous are counterattacks against Italy's strategy.
But instead Englad threw so many balls away, and didn't counter Italy's defense mechanism to stop counterattacks. And since luck didn't help England the few times it tried, England never scored again. You don't play around with Italy on a final. You don't win 1-0. Spain knew it in 2012.
England got lucky once it scored so early, but It didn't prove they could do it again. Not like that. Instead they reinforced the defense, and let Italy play. A stronger opponent would have scored within the first half, even after 20-30 mins. Than with an early tie, a new match begins.
I'm sorry for England though. Not the dumb supporters, but the team's history itself. England hate panalties just as much as Italy, which only after 2000 started bringing some luck. Before it was a nightmare, (and it still is). Nobody will say, but many in Italy don't really know how to feel about winning the cup tanks to the penalties.
Every time it seems they have the right team to win...something happens. Close, but not really. Sometimes penalties, sometimes huge strong opponents. It must suck.
I think it's time England wins something. All nations with major teams have had their glory...France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy...they all eventually managed to put up a team and a strategy to win the cup. England not yet, that's all.

  • @Seaxuan

Mancini’s master piece: with passing masters like Jorginho & Varreti, Italy was able to stretch the width of the pitch after conceded early goal, pushing the wingers higher up, forcing England wing backs to retreat as well as having defensive line stayed deep, limiting England’s strength on pace

So, Italy had a far better possession and much more chances to score goals, and England played half of the match in a really hard defensive position, with Kane that was playing like a defensive midfielder. Italy was considered an ultra-defensive nation, how funny. I can't remember a more defensive attitude in a final than the one of England in this Euro. Also, English supporters are claiming that Italy played dirty, because of 2 fouls that occurred during the play, both punished with 2 yeallow cards and are blaming Italian players for diving. However, there were much diving by Kane and Sterling and many harsh fouls made by English players. England went through the final thx to a fake penalty given due to a dive. Also, England got only one yellow card in the final, during extra times, despite the fact that there were many other occasions to get a yellow card. Also, Italy never got a fake penalty during the road to the final, instead, it was the victim of a fake penalty given to Belgium. Not even mentioning the fact that England played 6 matches out of 7 in England, without travelling through Europe and with its own supporters. What this Euro taught us in the end?

I think the smartest thing mancini did was taking off immobile he wasn’t really offering much. He cant hold up the ball well he was taking alot of poor touches. he’s a good finisher and has decent pace but when a team is sitting back like England is he has to be able to contribute to the game in other ways because he cant make those clever runs in behind because there sitting so deep. If you look at some of the best strikers in the world lewandoswki, kane, lukaku, benzema they can all hold the ball up well so once he took him off and played insigne as a false 9 he was able to come deeper and receive the ball and link up the play better and that’s when italy started looking more of a threat so immobile has to improve that part of his game

England had a lot of advantages throughout the entire tournament and still didn’t win. They only had to travel once, they had a massively favourable draw and they played dirty in the semis. The arrogant pundits (Rio Ferdinand takes the mick) and the disgraceful behaviour by some of the fans perfectly sums up why nobody wants them to succeed. Commiserations to Southgate and the players though. I do feel bad for them but this is a reality check for the media and the fans.

England in this tournament, believed, almost supernaturally, that their victory was a destiny already written, a litany inflated by Johnson in order to claim the cup and raise the consensus. Paradoxically, England ended up resembling Argentina. Getting to the final convinced all the English that it was already done. After scoring the goal they simply believed that Italy would never be able to equalize the score. Because the God of football had decided so. In some ways that second-minute goal killed them. The tactic only counts in part, it simply lacked the grit and motivation that leads to victory.

    • @meandermyself61
      @meandermyself61 3 года назад +5

No. Maybe Boris thought that but he's a clown and knows nothing about anything (except maybe adultery). We aren't that superstitious, and Football's coming home is totally misunderstood. It's black humour, because we all know it never does. Some people got carried away but most sensible people thought Italy were favourites. But playing in a final we had hope.
Your game analysis is wrong tho. England wanted a second but we had to keep the pitch wide and the pace high when we had the ball. At the same point we had to watch we didn't leave gaps. Italy were the technical side, but we have athletic young lads who are good at one vs one situations. you were going to have a lot of the ball, but we've shown against Spain in the Nations league that our best chance is to be compact when we don't have the ball, play out fast and keep the pitch wide then there are gaps for Sterling et al to attack.
I thought the first half was pretty good from us. But we got tired chasing the ball. If we got the second goal .. but we didn't because your defence was extremely watertight. We made promising situations but your centre halves were outstanding.
I was optimistic at half time but i didn't realise how knackered our players were. Southgate should have rationed out his subs instead of saving them till late. Tired players start losing their concentration. We made mistakes that eventually resulted in a goal. Our substitutes came too late and although we rallied our best chance had gone.
Ironically, you almost gave us a way back when Grealish was fouled that could easily have been a red. And saka would have had a clear run at goal but for a cynical foul from Chiellini (who i think did it believing he would get sent off, but was making the sacrifice for the team). I was angry about that at the time because even a red card wouldn't have made up for a precious chance on goal. But you had a succession of half-chances, and that man Chiesa was very dangerous.
We've never produced a really outstanding technical midfielder, that's our major failing. A few years back we had someone promising (Wilshere, with Arsenal) but he got injured so often and never fully developed. With just one guy like that, it would make our lives so much easier. That's the Premier League for you. We import those guys and our young players develop into different kind of players. If England had a Verrati we would not have to work so damn hard, because we would keep the ball better.
I enjoyed the game even though we lost. Except the penalties because i knew what was going to happen then. because it always does. I thought it was an interesting clash of styles and temperaments. Youth against experience too. I don't think we really understand each others' culture (not the yobs, they are just scum - canaille?) but things like our dark humour and your superstitions - something always seems to get lost in translation. I think most people here would be puzzled that our silly song got you so fired up. We aren't Americans, we humble-brag and we turn our pain at failure into a boast. We live on a soggy wet island where it's cold and rains all the time. Don't expect to understand us unless you've suffered our weather, our public transport and our cooking.

@@meandermyself61 Well, all very well said. But... this wasn't 100% my feeling at Wembley on Sunday. I am Italian, I've lived in the UK for over 20 years now. I "suffered" your weather, your food and your public transport (I actually "enjoy" most of it). And I can make a long list of things I love and admire of England. And I understand the long years of hurt and all of that... I was more than happy to support England on Sunday, had they won and I went to the stadium fully expecting to have a great time regardless of the result. Alas... how naive was I!
The atmosphere at Wembley, and outside Wembley in particular, was almost messianic in nature... and it had nasty sentiments of anger, arrogance, and superiority about it. Yes, some people (including the two lads who came with me to the match) fully feared that it would go bad, as it usually does. That Italy had the better team and the better game. That penalty would be fatal. But for a good part of that stadium, the feeling was "this is ours and we deserve it". And many people chanted "it's coming home" in the sense of "how dare you ever think we aren't better than anyone else"... there was little in the way of humility and respect for the adversary, I am afraid. By half-time I really wanted Italy to equalize and stuff you lot.
As you say, with a better mid-field one day you might come to win a major tournament. But in the meantime, it would do everyone some good to change the narrative, and instead of talking about "55 years of pain and counting" and blaming penalties, bad fortune, dirty adversaries, (the hand of) God and whatever else, take a good hard look in the mirror. The media in particular, I've now watched the BBC coverage of the match and I get what the Scots are on about...
Mancini said it well in his pre-match speech: "I have nothing [more] to say [to you], you know what you are [what you are worth]. We are not here by accident. We are the masters of our destiny, not the referee, not the opponents, not anyone. You know what you have to do." Just do it, and shut up about it.
In the meantime, back to cricket... ;)

As an England fan (no toxic hate pls thanks) what's most painful is that this loss is almost a carbon copy of the loss vs Croatia in 2018.
They were both played on 7/11 too ironically.
Great start, but WAY TOO NEGATIVE afterwards, only relying on long balls and set pieces.
Eventually the better midfield starts to dominate and get the equalizer.
Southgate made good adjustments vs Germany, but it looks like he still hasn't fully learned from 2018.
    1. This team has good enough attackers not to need to park the bus and solely play on the counter. Ok the MF is not very strong but there are attackers who can pick up the ball and progress it.
    2. If you're gonna play on the counter maybe play a forward with pace and tell Kane to do his CAM role at Spurs. Instead of long balls to Kane with no one running in behind!
    3. USE THE SUBS. Italy were the much better side for at least 35 mins before 1-1, and Southgate should've brought on Saka and Hendo earlier to disrupt that. We looked even with Italy in ET once Grealish came on and him/Sterling were driving at Italy.

I agree so much my friend. It’s not ideal but it’s okay to play counter football. But for counter football to work you need minimal spaces between players and forwards running in behind as a minimum. Southgates tactics are so perverted it’s almost like our players come short to the ball as a counter attacking team, madness. And may I add Grealish is a phenomenal ten in transition, similar to KDB when both run through midfield lines and often pick the correct pass with correct weight.

Similar mistakes southgate did again, scored an easy goal then sit back to defend for long periods of time. 18 World Cup semi final Croatia scored the winning goal at England’s right side , Italy 2nd half mainly focused on attacking the spaces between trippier and walker , why southgate didn’t react and made change ? take trippier off and put Reece James on . If Henderson is coming on , should be replace mount , keep 3 midfielders one of them to help out the right side to stop chiesa and insigne’s combinations

Another was the subs. Henderson for rice? Fine. Initially I thought southgate was already thinking about penalties, and henderson is an experienced penalty taker. But then he gets subbed off?For sancho?, an inexperienced penalty taker. Rashford imo isnt a good penalty taker too, he has missed quite a few for man United.

First thanks to Italy and England for the battle between the two strongest Teams in this Euro 2020.
England was physical so strong, and let Italy suffer a lot, the whole Formation of Italy, between Attacks, Midfield and Defense was well disturbed by England, but than England coaching staff Makes a big Mistake, have change into space defending, this works only 20 to 25 minutes, Italy now have the space to created there game, but is still good disturbed by England now 85%.
but this is what the Italians needed. They are Tactical Masters in the second Half.
The goal of italy was really well defended from England (at first) and Pickfords first save/ reaction World class, but Bonucci read the situation fast enough and leveled the score.
But than you can saw, how Italy use Englands own medicine of the first half and the adaptation of Englands coaching not brave enough (or maybe the tactical Tank was empty)
England was physical the better Team, but tactical outsmart a few percent.
The World Cup, if this happen in Qatar, England needs to developing the last few percents of winning will. We maybe saw the coming World Champion 2022 England. Young , talented but mentally needs get into next step. But again i see in this England Squad a potential to reign over six to eight years all Competitions, but the coaching staff needs to developing instantly, the other teams coming up.
Italy was with this Team on the Peak, to find again such Defenders like Bonucci / Chiellini. I think R. Mancini knows it. The Transition of his new playing style for Italy is maybe the key.
Englands pressing was in the second half starting slow down, it was the quality of the Italian team this tactical move the whole team starts i called "attacking pressing" is a Variation of Pressing Resistance (many small details) . In that situation England have recordinated the running ways of the Attacks and let the midfielders move more. Look at Spain, they really destroyed the Tactical shape of Italy, Spanish Team not use often this kind of Tactical Formations. This was a deep respect to Italy, but Mancini Survived this battle in the Semi.
If R.Mancini can created the Transition in one year, Italy's new playing style will be a threat for every who have to play against them. If England adapt this kind of Attacking style, with that players on the bench. Every team have to asked how high they will loose against England. But against stronger Teams like France or Belgium, they can play a high pace on the pitch over 90 minutes, it is all about Trick plays.
Like the first goal of England against Italy, was wondering what the Italians are doing, such a Disorganize Corner, but great and fast Executed from England. Harry Kane amazing . Englands team needed more supporting/ protecting him. All dangerous Key plays was coming from him.

If Italy gets stronger in Fitness and shooting skills and still hungry for more definitely one Top team. In this era of Artificial Intelligence Analysis, still find new gameplays and tactical moves.

Great high level analysis in terms of structure of general player movement. What was the critical miss however... is the far superior technical ball handling (control, touches, passing - this is where the fluidity of the game happens) of Italy over England. England over and over again does not present this skill generationally. Their style is more like an NFL linebacker; to put their heads down and just go direct. There is limited finesse and elegance in their game as a team. Mancini referred to this at press conferences; that Italy's technical will overcome England's physical play. Ask yourself why Verratti, Barella and Jorginiho just controlled the mid field and possession as they did? Until England commits to adopt these sorts of technical skills coupled with decision making they have little opportunity of winning. The countries that clearly have this mindset in their player development are Brazil, Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Argentina. Also don't assume that the other team won't play as hard. I kept hearing about all the superstars on the England team and Italy had a bunch of 'no namers'. I didn't see any superstars for England, even playing against all the weaker teams they faced. Question: Who would you rather have on your team Cheisa or Sterling? A woman would not ask Maguire or Stones to dance...their lateral movement to control the ball is not at an elite level in tight and tense situations; yet all we heard was how much more more mobile, agile and quicker the English were. This upcoming decade still belongs to France (and Spain based on how they played Italy). England, you need to rethink playing as a team and controlling the ball with confidence and sophistication!

    *Some comments about Federico Chiesa:*
He plays for my team, Juventus, so I do know a little about him.
In his first 10 or so matches for Italy he was given all the chances in the world. He played as hard as he could, ran his ass off, but goals were not coming. I remember one of the early matches was a Nations League match versus Portugal (incidentally this was the last loss Italy suffered before they went on their undefeated streak) and that butcher Pepe was really trying his hardest to physically bully him. Chiesa really looked his age and lack of experience against older, much more experienced players like Pepe showed (Pepe's a hack). Chiesa had a lot of work to do.
I honestly believe the fact that the tournament being pushed back 1 year helped both Italy's and England's younger players get 1 more year of experience. With Italy, I specifically mean Chiesa.
I don't think if the tournament was in 2020 he would have been as important. To think he started the tournament on the bench behind Berardi. As a super-sub. Clearly now, Chiesa has made the right side his for the next 5 or 6 years.
He may not be graceful and elegant but he is handful. He reminds me of Arjen Robben. Great control with the ball at his feet while running, doesn't show much of the ball, keeps his legs moving, isn't afraid to shot, shots on site.

While the hooliganism and anthem booing are entirely fair peripheral criticisms, the match is ultimately decided by what happens on the pitch. Italy on the whole outplayed us, it's that simple. Their midfield is superior, they kept us quiet for around an hour in the middle of the match and Mancini made subtle chess moves expertly after a difficult start. I can't call Bonucci's equaliser lucky, the warning signs had been there for a while. They know how to win trophies, barring '66 we don't and almost certainly never will again. The way it is.

5 clean sheets and only 2 goals let in the whole tournament is not an easy thing to do.
People saying that England are crap is an insult to other countries team and an insult on Italy's win.

You in UK, you don't need to master it, just be aware and respect it. The soon you do the soon you'll win. Premiership is, in my opinion, way better than Serie A. When something like losing a final happens the losing team end up decimated. The coach resigns, players are changed etc.
I hope that this won't happen to this England. The team is young, strong and full of will. Italy deserved to win due to the single fact that they had more stamina and could have finalised the game in extra time. But England has the opportunity to improve their "A" game and come out stronger from this defeat. Don't ditch this team. Next year we will have the World Cup: aim at that.

Italy was always going to win this game. Football games are won and lost in the midfield and Italy's midfield is far > than England's - more technical, skilfull, tactical and more creative. Verratti, Barella, Jorginho, Locatelli, Pessina, Cristante. And that is without the injured Zaniolo, Pallegrini and Sensi - 3 players that would walk into any side - watch out for Italy in Qatar.

  • @ilokivi

The OP claim of an easy run to the final for England is bogus: the team can only beat the teams it was matched against. Two goals conceded in the whole tournament in match time says a lot for the England defence, which Italy failed to penetrate for more than an hour. Italy's route to becoming champions lay in the hands of its goalkeeper, who played a blinder.

England defensively are good. That is the reason why they could break through the defensive lines in the first half. It took a tactical change in formation in the second half to make all of the difference with Immobile going off and Berardi coming on. And when they made their substitutions in extra-time, it changed the dynamics of the team, especially with Chiesa going off and Bernardeschi replacing him.

It is fine saying England should have attacked more but to do that you need possession of the ball and England's midfield 3 simply did not have the technical ability to retain possession or play their way through tight spaces.
Against Belgium twice and Croatia in the WC and here v Italy we see that England are technically not good enough at this level to control the play especially in midfield.
