The only mistake England made was sitting back after the first 20mins. They should have gone out and tried to kill off Italy, but they let Italy take over and then dominate. Penalties are always a toss-up.
England's soccer teams are always useless - failure is their middle name .The thing is, can you explain why for over a CENTURY now , .England's football teams are a joke ?
Totally agree with Burley. Too much talk about penalties. No one is talking about Southgates tactics throughout the game. Never did he look to win the game after being 1 nill up within 2 minutes. His squad had the most depth as compared to any other team in the tournament and yet he did not use it well and was too defensive.
Yep i dont like English National Team but im premier league fan and this defensive football was shocking, leaving rashford, sancho, foden on the bench, Southgate is a victim of his own decisions.
hi, im from Mexico and watched the game with my lil son from here in Mex, we are huge fans of english football, but when i saw Rashford and Sancho going in during the extra time, i told my son, England is going to lose. why my son asked?, i told him that back in the day when i used to play, our coach told us that it is bad to bring in guys just to kick the penalties, because they are not in rithm with the match, they didnt get enough time to "sweat" the adrenaline of going in a game like that, so in my opinion regardless of their age, the mistake was to bring them in soooo late, he should have stuck with players with more minutes in the game..... just an opinion.... take care!
@Drew Peacock i wrote it in retrospect, but i said it before they even kicked them 🤷♂️, thats why i said it was an opinion, of course any human being can miss a penalty kick, but if you watch the series again look at how they are standing before they start going for the kick, and also look at their faces.... then look at the players that didnt miss....you'll get a hint, and i dont really care if you listen to me or not, but i was just trying share some experience, next time you see a game go to penalties remember me, you're welcome....
@@SevillaLucho very true..scandalous what Southgate did & his rationale baffling. I guess if the kids score hes a hero, kids too and a once divided nation is now together. Ok, some of the young players play wthout fear and preconception.... but penalties in a Euro final..wow it dont get much bigger and requires ice cool nerve! He played russian roulette & lost. Upto then all his 'gambles' (if you call playing not to concede a gamble) had come off but luck does run out. I recall an interview he gave after Germany game-he said 'if i pick that team /system an we lose im dead'. Yes, Gareth you live an die by your decisions! The risk/fallout if they missed was so high for a man so pragmatic (worse considering hes been there himself!!) I am not convinced it was even his call.. but we better not go there. A new single-minded coach with an attacking mindset will make a difference.
C-Burley is spot on... England's attacking players were shackled by SG's tactics... Yes, he's worked wonders in terms of unifying the squad and getting them singing off the same Hymm sheet; engaging with the media etc... However, SG has been blessed with a crop of incredible offensive players, possibly the best in our history, which - at present - are in danger of going to waste. If we're not careful, England will be the next Belgium.
SG's tactic is not your problem. Problem is that when it comes to it, England players bottle it and also are just not good under pressure compared to other teams. If you had gone attacking, Italy would have executed the "park the bus and then counter attack" and would have still scored. Then you would be going, why SG tried attacking, should have parked the bus. Truth is, when it comes to pressure, England players are just not good enough when it really matters.
If they're good enough to play in champions League finals ect then why not for for England? I'd have to disagree it was definitely southgates tactics that let us down in the end . He made us hard to beat which is great but can he now take it forward and make us more fluid up front .... I'm not so sure .
@Phil Jones That's right. Same in 2018. They played Belgium in the group stage and lost when Belgium were trying not to win, then played nobody until they met Croatia. So they played 2 decent teams and lost 3 times to them!
Aspire to be Belgium, who ironically also have not won anything 👍 , have a go about England's lucky draws all you want but they don't pick the route. Not to mention your discrediting these other nation from they're achievement also 🤷 , before these matches Europe says don't underestimate those teams, once they're beat it's oh well they weren't a legitimate team? Lol hypocrisy at its finest 👍 .
@@n.s.5278 I think having a proper striker that can be given the ball upfront and finalize, or hold it and pass it to the side harry kane style would not only make them hard to beat, but also give that attacking edge to make them enjoyable. Also, I thought they were fun to watch during the italy spain game in hindsight (being an italian myself, and suffering a lot during that game)
People need to understand that the main problem is not those who took the penalties but the starting line-up and tactics in the game. The game is being played at Wembley and it's a final. He had to play to win and not to defend or draw penalties. Italy deserved to win.
England will never get a better chance. 1-0 up after 2 minutes, at home and then it was like watching the inevitable happening. I said after 30 minutes - "we can't do this for the entire game, we're asking to concede...get up the pitch, stop being so damned negative". Southgate did not learn a single thing from the Croatia game in the WC. Winning 1-0 up, then having the opposition pressing so much...it needed changing and he froze. Again.
@@huxleypig69 yeah, England would always have the same approach. You can't win big trophies by being scared to play. Chelsea's UCL win last season taught me that. I just hope Ole and Southgate sees this and learns from it.
Maguire can score goals even against his own team. Southgate is defensive minded and doesn't know how to be offensive capable. 🙄 if he put grealish on early, would England had scored?? Who knows. England are horrible when it comes to penalties in big tournaments. Just avoid penalties if you can. England will win the world cup in quasar. Just watch.
This view that it was wrong to submit the younger players to the pressure of taking penalties is sheer nonsense. A 19 year old is an adult. In England/UK you can join the army at 16. Then at 18 you can- and are- deployed to frontline duties on the battlefield. So that is real pressurre in life threatening circumstances and the war-mongering English have no qualms about this. As an aside I mention that in WW2 the average age of a dead US soldier was 23. In the war on Vietnam it was 19.
@@tonygreenland9378 Well, when you put it like that, yes... but we're really talking about apples and (admittedly) very sobering oranges. Cannon fodder is not the same as a millionaire kid with a nation's eyes on him.
Overall Italy have had the best GK situation in the world for decades. Germany were very good for a while too with Kahn and Neuer, but not anymore. You just can't beat Toldo, Buffon and now Donnarumma in succession. At least I can't think of another situation like it.
I agree he's one of the best pundits but then there's something he said here that I don't agree with. He said it's the responsibility of the older players to tell the coach not to allow Saka take the penalty kick. Southgate defended himself by stating they practiced penalties in the training section and found those (5) to be the best. Idg why Shaw, Stones have to tell Gareth to change his decision.
I am from Italy played at a decent level both teams were amazing. England played much better 1st half. Italy came back almost dominating 2nd half. Overtime both played great. What a game. I agrer with many comments below England should have tried to win and kill Italy earlier ajd never be happy with penalties
Well done Dominico and Italy 👏. We have scar tissue in our national psyche when it comes to penalties. Being a City fan I love Bobby Manc (Roberto Mancini). I've been all over the world watching England and I went to Italy and saw the game in Rome in 1997. Getting to the final is progress for us. I'd rather lose to Italy than Spain or Germany. Southgate has some real talent on his hands but has he got the chutzpah to let them express that talent? It was England trying to play cattanaggio? It's the most attacking Italian team I've ever seen!! Chiesa is top quality 👌I remember his Father I'm showing my age!!! Well done and take care Dom...
Yeah man I just hate that style of scoring first and then just trying to win with your defense. Your allowing the other offense to control possession and get in rhythym and once they get that goal and tie momentum is now heavily in their favor
I remember that 1997 game! 0-0, with a thriller ending: England hits the stick (Ince? Shearer? I don't recall), Italy takes the ball, counter-attacks, then Bobo Vieri hits the stick again within the same minute!
Spot on, also Southgate did not use his ace card which was a quality bench properly. Italy used 6 subs, England 3 subs (excluding the 2 for pens) and all 3 were later. Also as a Saints fan still can’t believe JWP and Ings were not in the squad.
Jack Grealish has a right to defend himself. Got nothing to do with the unity of the team. Everyone started blaming Grealish and Sterling because of Keanes comments.
@@victoroleru1976 if the coach said in the interview he decides who takes pens, but there were other players who were willing to take one, then nobody would falsely accused more senior players fof not taking a pen.a
Here in Brazil we have a different idea about penalties, here it is almost a general rule, that the most important penalties must be kicked by the stars, because if he loses, he is already a star, never a rookie, if he loses, he will always be remembered for the loss.

Mount didn't have a good tournament really. Grealish got a free minutes and made an assist with kane. Why put mount back on for the final? Just stubbornness and narrow minded. He only used half his squad.
They gonna discuss about the decision on a 19 y old taking It forever. Pay respect to Italy and talk about them. Mbappe also missed a penalty and hes young to.
Berardi takes penalties at his club so is Jorginho, Belotti, Bernardeschi used to takes penalties at Fiorentina and Crotone and Bonucci was a penalty taker for Italy in euro 2016. You can see who had better chance to win .
So so true. Italy also had the advantage of already having beaten Spain on penalties mere days before so there was no uncertainty at all over who should kick.
@@stephenmason9527 Italy also missed two penalties. Pickford made as many saves as Donnarumma. The only difference it came down to was a 19 year old understandably crumbled under pressure. Very very fine margins.
@@aldojuan1985 it is most certainly *not* a disadvantage when it comes to giving the manager the best idea for picking his kickers. Southgate picked his penalty kickers based on training... training.... but Mancini picked his takers partially because of a Euros semifinal shootout win. I know which situation I'd rather see to make my picks.
England’s record in penalty shootouts won 2 lost 7. We should never ever ever play for penalties again. We should just go for it on the pitch while we can and be done with it. If Grealish had come on half time and we had changed tactics we would be champions now. It’s a psychological problem.
@@annemariegutteridge4696 It doesn’t matter. Grealish would have helped defend by giving us an out ball in midfield. Our defence would have won the ball back and got it to Grealish who has the ability to turn , or hold the ball or win a free kick or even lay it off to someone like playing a ball over the top for Sterling or Saka. Rice / Philips can’t do that the way Grealish can. That’s worth a lot to a team trying to defend a lead. There’s more to defending that just tackling. England’s problem was that the ball just kept coming back again and again and there was no respite or counter attack. The equaliser became inevitable , and I will say one last thing. If Grealish helped us score another goal then that’s good defending too. Last time I got my calculator out it was much easier defending a 2-0 lead than a 1-0 lead. Or am I missing something? This area is Southgates blind spot. He’s a great man manager but a bang average tactician.
It keeps being said that penalties are a lottery so why on earth would you plan for them? Why would you make substitutions to plan for them? Whatever happened to trying to win the game? Right up to the final whistle?? It was naive from Southgate who just doesn’t have a winning mentality. His mentality is one of not losing. A completely different thing
Maybe in his head he thought he could makeup for England's past penalty failures and win. In my mind that was an insane tactic. Should attacked relentlessly after first goal and at least had warmed up players to take penalties. What was he thinking 😞😞
Correct chief. You have players with attacking flair so try to win it, not play defensive players for penalties. Southgate has a negative mindset and he will waste this generation of English players
Come on, man. You think Italy would let England score again like that? You would have been done by a counter attack. So much arrogance by you English fans. All smoke and no fire.
I am tired of hearing all this England nonce. Can we just appreciate how good Roberto Mancini was and his tactical abilities how he outclassed all of their opponents.
Southgate had one of the most youthful and exciting sides and he told them to defend a 1-0 lead from minute 3. Awful coach and to sub on those players for the pens and let Saka take that last one is just criminal. He has to go, disgrace.
@@MrSitemaster2 Lol. Italy had their best players out, if Chiesa was not subbed injured. Italy would have won without penalties. Italy were essentially playing with their second string team and they still won... Give Mancini the england squad, he would have the game within 90 minutes. FACTS.
No - the english as a team are not ready yet. The best team won - Italy has played fantastic foot-ball, the whole world loves them because of that, and I give all my love to Italy! Congrates from a Dane, and thank you, Italy!
Jack Grealish did not back away from taking a penalty. Southgate simply didn’t trust him. The truth is that the young players probably took better penalties during practice
I don't have a problem with the predominance of England talking points. This is an English language show, after all. The problem with these pundits is that they're resigned to "soccer" matches going the way they've gone for the past 50 years. The rules need to change if this sport is going to progress. There's pros and cons to the golden goal scenario but the pros outweigh the cons. In any case, too many international matches go to penalties under the rules as they are. I'm of a mind of reducing the size of the pitch, first of all, and then reducing the size of the squads to 9 v 9 in the first period of Extra Time and then 7 v 7 in the second phase before resorting to a penalty shootout. I'd also enlarge the size of the goal to a ten foot crossbar. Am I completely crazy?
Shaka is wrong about Grealish. Why can’t he come out and defend himself? Also, he never threw Southgate under the bus. He literally said that Southgate had made the right decision.
No. I was against Southgates subs and tactics throughout. Needed more Foden, Graelish and Sancho. Especially when see Sterling not having his best game and Saka is great, but not best option for a final. Him on 5th pen is insanity and screamed it before he kicked the pen.
Saka, a 19-year old, took his first-ever penalty in a senior game...in the Euro final given the responsibility for England's most important penalty in 55 years....to save them in their match... Mind-blowing management. They say that Southgate is a great manager, but he got very lucky with the opponents: England's record in tournaments under Southgate: Wins: Tunisia, Panama, Colombia (PK), Sweden, Croatia, Czech Rep, Germany, Denmark, Ukraine Losses: Belgium, Croatia, Italy (PK) Most of their wins were against average teams or fading teams (Croatia, Germany) England always lose when they face a good team. Under Venables, Hoddle, Eriksson, they had better managers and were unlucky to lose against Germany and Brazil, Argentina. Southgate has no winning experience at club-level.....and it showed when he made his team play like Stoke in the final vs Italy.
100% spot on. Prediction: crash out in Quatar in round of 16 or 1/4 finals. Two tournaments with easy roads to the semi finals. They will crack under the extreme pressure. Now, the fans will expect nothing less than a semi final. Not easy at all. The last 2 draws were unbelievably very pro-England.
Italy weren't the one attacking team at this Euro. There have been few great attacking teams like Czechs, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Switzerland. This was the best Euro in terms of attacking football (more goals scored than in last 4-5 Euros). And it's only logical and good that attacking team won in the end and not negative risk-free stuffy team like England with overrated players.
ESPN are the only pundits not giving Southgate a pass and I commend them. Southgate completely butchered this final. From the starting 11, to the team's mentality, to his unwillingness to adjust, to his late substitutions, to his penalty choices. Just horrid. And yes I know England scored in part because of the width created from the 2 wing back set up but you saw what happened after Italy settled in around the 20th minute or so. They just completely dominated. Because England didn't have enough quality on the pitch. To hold the ball. To counter attack. To get the ball out of their 1/3. 5 defenders AND two defensive mids. With all the attacking quality England had on the bench. Disgraceful.
Southgate is the darling of the woke set, so of course the media are going to give him a free pass. He doesn't deserve credit for reaching a final, because given the squad at his disposal, the home ground advantage, and having the easy side through the luck of the draw, it is the minimum he should have achieved. And once in the final, he was practically gifted a 1-0 advantage, but he played not to lose rather than playing to win. And if he had to virtue signal with his choice of penalty takers, he should have at least put Rashford and Sancho on in extra time to get them warmed up and into the rhythm of the game. And putting so much pressure on Saka was ridiculous. The most that can be said of him is that other managers in the past have been as bad if not worse, but that is little consolation. This was England's big chance, and largely due to their manager, they blew it.
For all the talk about Italy “outplaying” England, it’s worth noting that Italy’s equaliser came from a set piece goalmouth scramble where the ball bounced kindly for Bonucci to get a tap in after Pickford saved the initial attempt from Chiellini. England just didn’t do enough to win the game. Folks should also note that unlike teams like Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, etc, England don’t yet have a clearly defined style of attacking play because they don’t have a winning template to draw on. And no one remembers 1966 let alone how that team played to win it. This England team is still struggling to find its footballing identity, which may be a function of the fact that for too many years prior to 2010 -2013 and the emergence of St George’s park and the EPPP program and other initiatives to develop young, more technically proficient players, England’s football authorities had wasted too many years tossing it off and settling for shortcut measures for success by hiring and firing managers - foreign and domestic - without any long term strategy or tactical plan that could be called the “England way” of playing to win. There were too many wasted years of different managers/coaches doing different things that ultimately left fans confused about what the plan was for winning. At least, Southgate is trying to give the team some degree of identity, even if it’s a pragmatic one, and 2 goals conceded from set play throughout the whole tournament kinda supports his method. The challenge now for England is to work on developing an effective attacking style of play that, even if it doesn’t bring a trophy, could still serve as a template for future teams. In short, England are still playing catch-up.
I find it amazing that people are actually moaning about the team and SG when they are showing progress. Last time semi's, now the final. Look are the perfect no but are they improving, yes. I think you are right here.
@@Enzoblueblood They have Foden and Grealish already. Both should have gotten more playing time to increase the team’s possession and allow time for build up play. One pacy forward is enough in the starting eleven in my opinion Other pacy forwards can come in later in the game when the opposition are tired. You need your most reliable ball handlers playing close together and forming the spine of your team, Maguire and Stones, Bellingham and Phillips, Foden or Greallsh, and Kane. The English Football Association does not seem to be sold on this line of thinking yet I think.
@@ReplyMNO I hear you bro… but Foden, Saka, Grealish, Sancho, Rashford, Sterling- have not played with each other long enough to form a cohesive attacking unit that plays in a way where patterns of play are established and everyone knows what they’re doing. Most of those players are post WC18. If euros had happened last year most of those players wouldn’t be in the squad tbf. Hopefully, the upcoming WC qualifiers will give GS the opportunity to try new things with his formations. I did learn that FA are working on creating an England dna as they call it, where tactics and formations become second nature to the players, but I’m not quite sure if the current way of playing is the “England dna” they’re talking about.

This coach luck of experience , even though he reached semi final and final that doesn't Mean anything if don't win...He was the one blamed for big and shameful lose....In his Career, not winning big trophies so he doesn't know how to win big games and trophies.
Southgates lack of belief that his team could win cost them ,,Remember a few years ago England were knocked out by Iceland and I think they still lack confidence .I think scoring quickly was a bad thing because they just sat back and defended after that .If 80 minutes 0-0 I think they might have finally brought on the attack minded players
The beginning of the end started after the 1-0 when they start with Italian catenaccio (without knowing to do it) hoping to resist for another 87’min….🤷🏽♂️ Penalties are a lottery, with many small things can affected the final result
England were to conservative did not take enough risks in this final especially after that first goal Gareth should have pushed his team faster and harder against the two older defenders

Southgate is exactly like ole in international football. Both are lucky to get the job, both are clueless in substitutions and both are negative and defensive and style of football are bland and boring.
Gareth Southgate should have said immediately in no uncertain terms it was him who decided the order of Pens. Grealish just said he was going to take one, but the gaffer decided the order. Don't see anything wrong with that.

What manager in the whole world could get his team to a tournament final while keeping his best players on the bench? Besides, Grealish is a fantastic dribbler that plays for Aston Villa and can often be an asset for England as a left forward. He’s not England’s best player. Sancho is a fantastic speedy dribbler that plays for Dortmund and can be an asset for England as a right forward. He’s not England’s best player. Rashford: good player, inconsistent season. Jude Bellingham: fantastic potential but only 18. None of them are England’s best players. And the players that did play all have more accomplishments than those I’ve listed. Phil Foden, on the other hand… Arguably, England’s most naturally gifted player, and he had 2 starts and came on once as a sub. England’s missing piece wasn’t on the bench. England did have chances to win the final. But that was down to individual player ability/or mistakes from Italy. Not the team nor management decisions. Although I'm Italian, let me give a little tip. The difference between a winner and a second-place finisher is that you step into the field to win it all. You don't play "safe", you don't give Italy all the possession which is when they play at their best. England set out to reach the final. Italy set out to win it. People seem to forget that in 30 years no one is going to care about second place at the Euro 2020. And Italy played knowing that, while England did not. Ps: as a fact id go as far as to quote CR7, "whatever my son does, in football or not, I want him to be the best". England was the best team, but they played without confidence, without building momentum. Looking at the talent on display for England vs Italy, we should have lost. But we played to win, confident we would always find a way for the Italian people. England played to not lose.
As an English person I 100% agree with you. We played not to lose and it cost us. I just don’t understand how Southgate didn’t calculate the risk of going to penalties. I would’ve demanded a second goal, I’m no expert but I knew we would not win that contest.

You need to have a pool of players that you want to take the penalties. Based on those players mood after the game you select from that pool. You can also tell players mood based on the eye test in the huddle. If one of the players you wanted looked like they want no part of it you move on to someone else in the pool.
You criticize Gareth but you are blind. Your players on the night of the defeat danced and drank while partying. In reality, from the images, you couldn't have distinguished who won or lost the game if you hadn't seen or read the news. The faults are not all of Gareth, but also of the whole system and the divas mentality of your talented players.

The three black guys who missed the penalty were picked because of identity politics(skin color) but not because they were the best to take those penalties.
The system. The Quenn must have paid for there trip to the finals and getting every game at home. With large crowds. He lost the game when he set up with 5 defenders and 2 holding midfielders. Donnorumma(sic) is a beast. Pickford is not. That would've been the difference, but cold legs and timid play left England looking weak. This is all on Southgate.
You can argue that the last two penalties were not very precise. They were pretty poor honestly. Rashford, at least, nearly got the goal. His penalty wasn't that bad
I completely agree with you m8 its refreshing to hear something interesting from a football player of course he has the right to defend himself over not taking a penalty I mean its obvious southgate picked the five players he brought two of them on to the pitch with barely a minute to go In extra time so it's on him for me anyway the irony is he thought about it in great detail and it still counts for nothing m8? 😎😎

That's not the point. We shouldn't have got to the penalties. We were wining in minute 2' of the match we could have crushed them only by putting Grealish on to finish them off. I am going to be England's new coach for F sake🙄

i don't give Southgate any credit for England reaching the final. they had an easy draw the whole way aside from Germany and they have one of the most talented squads in the tournament. if England had a manager of Mancini's caliber, they probably win the tournament. Southgate's team selection and tactics were questionable throughout the tournament. and no surprise, his choices for the penalty-takers ended up being questionable as well.
@@evanclp514 but that Germany side as a team have been on the decline since 2018. They’ve been doing pretty bad since. Not taking away from England but would they have won that match had they gone up against a traditionally strong German side? In my view, I don’t think so.
The truth of the matter is, that this England team was fortunate to be in the Euros final. England by far had the easiest route to the final of all the teams in the finals. The route to the final was pretty much designed for England to win and they still lost. Gareth Southgate is not the manager to get England over the 55yr + drought. Southgate lacked ingenuity, creativity with his tactics and had overall poor squad management.
If it passes he's a genius if it fails he's he's a loser. They have the talent to win in regular time. Penalties is a 50/50 thing. Overall he did a very good job!
Well Saka took a good penalty in the far corner but it was the Italian man-mountain gaint keeper who was brilliant and is the best goal keeper in the world. That`s why the keeper was the player of the tournament. It`s not that Saka was bad but keeper was excellent
England are the Chicago Cubs of the national team before the Cubs won the 2016 World Series. 108 years of drought and this is right along with the England’s current major championship drought they haven’t won since the 1966 World Cup. That’s way too long for any major tournament for the national teams!
Well he was a couple of penalty kicks away from being knighted and now he is a complete idiot m8 obviously I am being sarcastic typical British media but yes I do agree he could have been more offensive tactically but Italy deserved to win it really m8 to be honest? 😎😎
Why didnt Southgate go for the win?! Kane and Sterling were gassed by the end of the first half! He had kids on the bench waiting to stick the dagger into the Italians! Rashford, Sancho and Grealish would have made the Azzuri pay for leaving their defense the same thru out the Euro. Southgate has to go.
The Italian midfield dominated the game in the 2nd half, and England couldn't get the ball to their forwards in attacking positions, so it wouldn't have mattered who England had up front.
I don't think whether his leadership is good or bad is what we need to look at. The team didn't set up in a way that would allow them to compete within open play and they lost on pens. It's simple. There's no point in arguing about who should've taken a penalty because they also could have missed.

The only mistake England made was sitting back after the first 20mins. They should have gone out and tried to kill off Italy, but they let Italy take over and then dominate.

Also some terrible challenges on eng players
@Phil Jones That's right. Same in 2018. They played Belgium in the group stage and lost when Belgium were trying not to win, then played nobody until they met Croatia. So they played 2 decent teams and lost 3 times to them!

Again.

I got a shock when I saw Saka walking up........
Well said.
@@Enzoblueblood
They have Foden and Grealish already.
@@ReplyMNO
I hear you bro… but Foden, Saka, Grealish, Sancho, Rashford, Sterling- have not played with each other long enough to form a cohesive attacking unit that plays in a way where patterns of play are established and everyone knows what they’re doing.
The issue started from the formation, why you play defense in ur own field with 60 thousand fans? This coach luck of experience , even though he reached semi final and final that doesn't Mean anything if don't win...He was the one blamed for big and shameful lose....In his Career, not winning big trophies so he doesn't know how to win big games and trophies.
Southgates lack of belief that his team could win cost them ,,Remember a few years ago England were knocked out by Iceland and I think they still lack confidence .I think scoring quickly was a bad thing because they just sat back and defended after that .If 80 minutes 0-0 I think they might have finally brought on the attack minded players
The beginning of the end started after the 1-0 when they start with Italian catenaccio (without knowing to do it) hoping to resist for another 87’min….🤷🏽♂️

Enough of this penalty nonsense, we should have been bold enough to attack Italy and win it in normal time, or at least extra time.

Phil Foden, on the other hand…
Arguably, England’s most naturally gifted player, and he had 2 starts and came on once as a sub.
England’s missing piece wasn’t on the bench. We’re still missing a midfielder like a Modric or a Kroos or Jorginho type player to knit that team. Maybe, an Emile Smith-Rowe who’s an attacking midfielder for Arsenal could be a solution but let’s see.

@@JamesCM86 I mean southgate himself said that pks are "a toss of a coin". But on the pinch his strategy seemed to be to go to pks. Very strange in my opinion. You need to have a pool of players that you want to take the penalties. Based on those players mood after the game you select from that pool.
