The Takanakuy is a very old tradition based on the ritual of spilling blood is an offering to the Pachamama (Earth Mother) to maintain the fertility of the soil. There is some evidence to suggest that it was found through out the Andes before the colonization by the Spanish in the 1500s. Takay means to hit in Quechua and naku is a verbal suffix meaning a "mutual action". Taki Unquy means "song sickness" in Quechua. The video footage was great and kudos to the reporter.

Timothy Smith OK but you do agree that would be pretty much and ape world. Actually it has been like that for many centuries, physical violence in terms of “empty hands” hasn’ been a criminal matter till roughly the 1700 in Europe. Problem was that they made rules on who could do what pretty early so for instance only nobles could carry a sword and for regular people, let alone peasants, it was forbidden even to carry a hidden knife in the Middle Ages

@Krazy WhiteBoy not only that us Americans are very prideful people. If a person takes a loss that would result in the beef or the fight being taken outside of the ring
I was impressed by this reporters spirit to join in the festivities and the fighting as well. It shows true courage to go to another country with another language and culture and get into hand to hand combat in order to fully understand the people. As soon as i heard he had two girl friends and has a motorcycle i knew he was fucked
This is not my final form. Hold my coca and cacao tea ceremony.
Yea this reporter has balls of steel
This was beautiful . Amazing indigenous people and culture. I wish the Native Americans were allowed to similarly keep their culture and traditions alive like this.
Look in the right places; some of the customs still exist, more than you think
They would have if they showed up with guns instead of bows and arrows
There’s plenty of Native American areas where indigenous culture is very strong and people still live in traditional homes and practice many indigenous customs. The Pueblos of the Southwest are one of the most well known
Makes me hate white people
"Were allowed" who's not allowing them? If they wish to keep their customs they can do so!
it's a beautiful way of solving conflicts. starts and ends with a hug is totally 10000% awesome.
“Dancing with a bunch of guys that look like things I’ve seen on DMT” 😂
dmt go crazy
This is gold 😂
Damn bruh fr
Youve found a part of your roots
On point
This reporter has brass balls, he is little and he fought there and he also has a documentary where he went to Africa somewhere and fought in their style also, this dude is cool
“We’re gonna go there and I’m going to fight some kid.” 😂😂😂😂
Blahahaha 🤣🤣 🤣
George Carden and lose

My Boxing Day tradition is watching this video again. Always worth the re-watch. Thanks, VICE, for the best 20 minutes of my year.
At least I'm not the only one who watches this annually.
@@gregorybower2759 yesss!
It’s Boxing Day, and here I am again to watching this for maybe the 10th time. Happy Takanukuy everyone!
"The lead up to to the fight is a week of *drinking* and dancing".
Exactly👌
This guy is more brave, than most of you comment warriors.
Got that right
Ikr :v
Given real situations most of these fuckers would back down
Ya right, even braver then you with your Pillow fights.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah whatever guys. I’m 49 and spar harder than this every week. Kudos to those who participate though, looks like a great celebration. Bit of biff and a few brews after. No harm, no foul.
You Goddamn right
Someone is breaking the first rule of fight club
LMFAOOOOOO
This was actually mentioned in the fight club afterward
HIS NAME IS ROBERT PAULSON
Best comment award winners is
ahh brilliant
Much love to the people from Peru and their traditions. Now thats entertainment what a way to let anger out and forget grudges after. I feel like most beefs can be solved with a simple fight after that move on. Salu2 de un Mexicano
That was pretty nice of the guy to take it easy on ole thomas
Major respect for Thomas, not sure how many people have been up 4000 meters above sea level, if you are not used to it the first 2 days you feel like your head is going to explode. I've trained in boxing for years, yet after years of visiting these highlands I still can't get used to it , now going up there getting wasted and fighting bare knuckle that's another level.
was born and raised in the mountains. sure can run for longer closer to the sea!
i went to bogota colombia and i was fucked up the lack oxygen make u sick ..it took me 3 months to get used to it
That is what coca leaf is for....
high altitude....so sleepy
jammie3007 Bogotá is only half the altitude of Cusco lol
I appreciate the fact that he tries to immerse himself as best as he can when visiting these other countries and experiencing their cultures. By far one of my favorite vice reporters.
9:09 that firework fight with the neighbors was hilarious scene, such a good video they really took you in as one of there own, well done.
"He has a pet eagle, two girlfriends, and a motorcycle" bruh I would've tapped right there

Ahahah ya and your dickhead professors too
I know what you did there😂😂
I am from Peru and it is awesome seeing Thomas out there other than the capital Lima. Love his humor and his thoughts on Peruvian traditions, dude is hilarious! Props to him for actually fighting too :D
Why is vice litteraly the only news outlet that i can stand. Cant find great content like this anywhere else
Same here, Vice is always introducing me to something new
Vercingetorix The Chief only the best news networks film drunk guys fighting
Watch out though ignore vice when it talks politics its pretty bias
tua domoni Great point, for they are entertainment (sometimes propaganda) and definitely not a "news" outlet.
tua domoni I’m a Native American post-sexual feminist, and I find your post ignorant hate speech.
P.S. I’m vegan......and vape
I thought the other people were unskilled till this guy fought
Lol made me wonder what it would be like to go there and just jab everyone till the get ko'd
respeezy until they suprise you and you get KO
respeezy bitch you ain’t going full mma fighter when you are 3 days balls deep drunk and wasted, obviously this guys are fucked up and have no real fighting school, and this fights are friendly and made for peace, maybe you fight because people bullied your ass at school but don’t bring that drama here
Wamy Ram is not as easy as he painted it to be for is not a fight to hurt but to relieve the pent up anger the point of the fight is never to hurt them or kill which is what most actual martial art do teach how to hurt your opponent as fast as possible that way none would want to fight that's why there's no kick to the face or grappling unless the other hand is used to punch
He should have fought those kids throwing firecrackers at him... he still would have lost but it would have been more of a fair fight
They were trying to break his anxiety
😂
"He owns a pet eagle, has two girlfriends, and rides a motorcycle... he's also taller than me, and has long hair."
Bro is comically superior
OMG..Best line by Thomas ever! 16:36
"Someone was showing me how to wrap this...until we got whIPPed...by a GUY...that was pretty rUde."
Hola juanito what you get for Christmas?
Juanito: I got my ass beat
😂🤣😂

Am I a biggot cause I read that in Mexican accent
LMAOOO
Peruvian mortal kombat for Christmas sounds pretty amazing 🔥💯
That was extremely graceful for such a young guy to have mercy and really let you try and get some in, especially after he just got the worst of his last fight...
Kudos mean what
Kudos - great job/I tip my hat.
I other words, it's called "Hit Each Other Day". Cool.
better than aztec ritual sacrifice
@Jose Colon also very true but if i were to liv back then I would rather be a part of the inca
Why is nobody talking about how those kids literally threw firecrackers in his room like hand grenades?
Peruvian kids
Kids in latin america are wild man
Guy doesn't fight and still went in there, mad respect.
He fought like a fucking girl. Sad to see.
Their way is a just way for their own governing of the people. It is refreshing to see that somewhere in the world all come together and celebrate all as family. If I was to travel outside the states I would want to go there.
Pretty amazing to see how people live. Everyday of their lives are spent in those mountains. Its tough, its work but its all they know. I think its beautiful. Even though my man made America look weak lol. I give him credit tho, ida been nervous as hell. Good video overall.
Brian Zantop well, if you go to the Andes for a hike, for example, you would feel weak. There’s less oxygen because of the altitude, they have bigger lungs. They ARE strong because of their diet, their errands, everything. I’m proud that you guys think we are tough lol
@@burner-phone name checks out
@@burner-phone nah, that guy always acts like that anywhere he goes. I think vice does it on purpose. They just send in the most Ill equipped Brooklyn hipsters to some central American or west African village to act as socially awkward as humanely possible. I get why people like it's it's kinda funny, but sometimes it gets irritating and disrespectful.
@@AsiaMinor12 perhaps? i’m peruvian too but yeah. maybe you’re right and he’s just exaggerating ☠️ when you put it like that it’s disrespectful
RESPECT! You went out there and did your thing 👍🏼 you danced, drank, and fought with them and like them. They must have had so much respect for you bro.
One thing about laws is actually a lack of personal responsibility. They leave a lot of room for just being an ass. You're less likely to treat someone poorly if there's a chance they'll actually knock you TFO on Christmas.
Absolutely God damn right my man!
@Mike E might be a bit of that too!
Timothy Smith
OK but you do agree that would be pretty much and ape world.
"Once you've taken a few punches and realise you're not made of glass, you don't feel alive unless you're pushing yourself as far as you can go."
thought about this quote after the reporter finished his fight, mans Brave.
Green Street Hooligans, love that movie
Beautiful native culture ❤️💯🙌🏽
It's better than picking up a damn Gun and Killing someone, you can fight & resolve like a man👍
Sangli Cryzal or just don’t fight 😃😃, but I guess people have to be people.
@@user-st4mf3rf4t its mostly men. All that testosterone has to be poured somewhere.
This is the way of honor, of true man, one against one, no kill, only few punches and life is more equal, justice for all.
ClearedCrayon I bet you know all about men dumping their testosterone don’t you 😜
Or woman or child.
I love it how he's holding the beer while finishing the first day of filming 😂 that's true tradition in Peru. Nobody stays without a beer during the festivities, if you finish it somebody else refills it 🤪
He even knew how to shake the excess drink off the glass before passing it around 🤭
I wish we had this in the US to settle beef the right way.
@Krazy WhiteBoy not only that us Americans are very prideful people. If a person takes a loss that would result in the beef or the fight being taken outside of the ring
Look up street beefs
@@bufordtjustice1156 You should look up Mighty Mouse UFL
It’s called Black Friday
@D K Your actual allowed to fight in Washington with out getting arrested
That’s pretty cool
I was impressed by this reporters spirit to join in the festivities and the fighting as well. It shows true courage to go to another country with another language and culture and get into hand to hand combat in order to fully understand the people.
Although I’m sure both fighters could have done more damage they had a good time and still got a few hits in which in the end there’s nothing better than making a friend out of a fight.
Mad respect!
This actually brought a tear to my eye as I reminisced about my trip to Perú. I fell in love with their culture, their people and their amazing landscapes. If you've never visited, I urge you to go... you'll come back a better person.
