That depends a little on what your requirements for backpacking suitability entail! It does have a framesheet and stays, and is capable of carrying up to 30 lbs. It does not have hipbelt pockets or water bottle pockets. and the backpanel is an EVA foam that sits close to the body and can shed snow so it would not be considered breathable. Hi Damir, the current model of the Mutant 38 is treated with a DWR water repellant finish, however we would still recommend using a pack liner or rain cover for complete protection in wet weather. You can check out Osprey's pack liner here: www.enwild.com/osprey-ul-packliner.html
@@Enwild Thank you for your response. I would like to know one more detail pls. Is in the volume of 38l the removable lid included or the total volume is 38l + the lid? Thank you very much.
Hi Joe- The 2019 model would be a great option for your mountaineering trips. It has external straps and gear loops for your alpine needs like an ice axe or climbing rope. Unfortunately, we do not have another year model to compare this item with, so please feel free to check out our website and let us know if you have any other questions. www.backcountryedge.com/osprey-mutant-38-2018.html?.com&KK9oviCpMY
It looks like it should be back on the website in the next few weeks! An order was placed from Osprey at the end of February so there should be more available soon! Our website reflects our inventory in real time so keep an eye out. Otherwise, you can give one of our gear specialists a call Mon-Fri 9:00-5:30 (800) 617-0643. Happy Trails!
Thanks for the review. Really nice pack.
Is it suitable for backpacking? My only concern is the last of external mesh pockets for water bottles.

The 38 liters is including the removable lid. Thanks for asking!
What, if any, are some key improvements on the newer model? Thinking about going with the 38 for my next mountaineering pack...

they removed the back panel access zipper.
Does this have a breathable / ventilated back?
It's kind of breathable but not ventilated. Would be fine for winter but warm for summer hikes
Do you all know when the 38 and 52 will be back in stock on your website?
