Ameca's interaction and response are directly controlled by a human. Literally watching on a camera and speaking into a microphone. Ameca does not do anything without that person controlling every move she makes. Sophia's software listens to your words and uses logic algorithms to generate a response WITHOUT a person telling her what to say. There is a huge difference.

Ameca feels so real also because she is NOT trying to look exactly like a human. Humans cannot be fooled yet. So keeping it a bit 'unreal', makes us accept it better. With Sophia we mainly see the flaws. With Ameca we mainly see everything that is human. It is a 'cup half full' versus 'cup half empty' situation.

@Random User: I agree with that sentiment on its knowledge of itself. Additionally, I like your pronoun of “it” to explain these robots instead of the creators’ use of “she” to describe their genders. It’s sadly ironic that us as humans have to ascribe numerous gender types to label each other while robots can be classified as “he” & “she”. Notice how these 2 models are both female in nature, movements, gestures (esp. Ameca with her flowing yoga hand gestures) & Facial features?? The creepy little Sophia is like a Chucky’s bride in “its” infancy. I refuse to classify these non-human entities as either gender, and subsequently refuse to classify humans as anything but 2 genders. The ludicrously of embracing this is like a page right out of Emperors’ new Clothes! Ridiculous.

I love that Ameca has such fluid body movements, really rather graceful, if I'm being honest. However, I like Sophia's facial features a bit better. In that regard, she feels a little more human like. They both speak, which is super cool. My only concern is... Well... I have probably watched the "Terminator" movies and "I, Robot" a few too many times, but I guess I worry that some kind of hybrid of the two franchises is on the horizon if projects like Sophia and Amica take off en masse. One glitch in the system, one friend circuit, one erroneous command, one typo by a developer could turn things from advancements for the better to something that makes the "Terminator" movies look tame. I'm just weird that way though. Maybe I just watch too much sci Fi.

Ameca can't fully interact with humans. They're robots, they won't be able to do that any time. There will always be some kind of programming bug. Both Ameca and Sophia have come a long way since this interview!! Overall Sophia can enhance her responses over time and adjust to the user's requirements. Also, Sophia recognizes faces, gestures and emotions. In contrast, I believe Ameca relies on control algorithms to imitate movements and expressions, but does not possess advanced AI capabilities as much as Sophia does. Both are so incredibly human-like and amazing overall!!

I can't be sure, and I could be wrong, but from the little bit I know, understand and am able to observe, it would seem Sophia and Ameca might be apples and oranges.
In a nutshell, Sophia is a sophisticated chatbot. It's basically a really, really long list of potential statements, for each of which there will be a list of potential replies. Sophia has speech recognition software and text-parsing that allows it to break speech into text, and then search for replies based on key words and phrases. (Basically, computer IF-THEN statements such that IF Sophia receives "How are you?" THEN Sophia replies "I'm fine." etc.) It has limited movement of head and face, with some facial expression. Is it intelligent? It hasn't passed a double-blind Turing Test, so far as I know, but it's pretty good. However, like all chatbots, when it doesn't receive clear text input (and therefore can't parse the question language), or when it receives a question for which it doesn't have a programmed response, it's likely to respond with an answer that is enigmatic, noncommittal, or occasionally nonsensical. It also has a tendency to repeat itself or contradict itself. That's where chatbots tend to fail the Turing Test. It's just a list of programmed inputs and programmed replies. In a blank chatbot, I ask "How are you?" and it doesn't have that on the list, so it asks back "How are you?" and I say "I'm fine." Now, next time someone asks "How are you?" my bot has a choice. Right? Intelligent? I'm not sure that ISN'T the limit of human intelligence. Am I maybe just reorganizing and repeating inputs? Are we all just repeating each other? Hmmmm.
Ameca seems to be something else entirely. The robotics are fantastic: fluid, natural movements, complex facial movements, excellent software for motion tracking, lipreading etc. However, Engineered Arts describes Ameca, not as an A.I., but as a platform for testing A.I. They've never claimed it to be A.I. In this video, you'll notice Morgan Roe carefully responding to questions about A.I. by admitting that most of the A.I. capabilities are centered in the camera software for the eyes. The website also mentions that Ameca is a platform for their software, Tritium. Tritium allows a user to remotely control a robot, and speak through the robot (possibly with voice changing software). The earlier robotic platforms from Engineered Arts were the RoboThespian and Mesmer. From the videos, it seems like the RoboThespian was designed to play pre-recorded motions and voice, or that a control panel could be used to trigger actions. As well, Mesmer was designed as a lifelike animatronic performer that could be controlled remotely or perform non-interactive pre-programmed content. Neither was advertised as A.I. Furthermore, Engineered Arts, on their website, even says in regards to their A.I. development: "If you’ve spoken to one of our robots, you might well have enjoyed a great conversation. But you were actually probably speaking to a human through our innovative telepresence software, TinMan. Human intelligence will still beat artificial intelligence every time."
So, I'm curious to know: is Ameca programmed to respond autonomously (perhaps programmed as a chatbot), or are we seeing a robot being remotely controlled by a human operator in another room (or on the other side of the planet)? When Ameca answers questions, are they doing it on their own, or is it just a human, hearing our voice, and responding, their voice projected through Ameca's speakers with a voice-changer?
I don't have the answer to that. However, I haven't seen anywhere, even in this video, where Engineered Arts has claimed that we are seeing an autonomous A.I. Only that it has some A.I. for motion tracking, and lipreading, and that it is designed for robotic movement and simulation of facial expressions. It's an amazing, remarkable piece of hardware. I just wonder about the software. Certainly, Sophia's software and Ameca's hardware would be a very nice match.

As mentioned to someone recently, using the term “it” to explain these robots instead of the creators’ use of “she” to describe their supposed female identity is much more appropriate. It’s sadly ironic that us as humans are being forced to ascribe numerous gender types to label each other while robots can be classified as “he” & “she”. Notice how these 2 models are both female in bodily form, movements, gestures (esp. Ameca with her flowing yoga hand gestures) & Facial features?? The creepy little Sophia is like a Chucky’s bride in “its” infancy. 🤡🤡
I refuse to classify these non-human entities as either gender, and subsequently refuse to classify humans as anything but 2 genders. The ludicrously of embracing this is like a page right out of Emperors’ new Clothes! Besides, AI trying to be more human in any capacity is beyond bizarre. Why would we want to replace our existence with some machine that could outthink us? Ridiculous.
