B D But saving the 5 is not the “right” answer. It is only an answer. It’s justification is debated. I do not think it would be right to pull the lever. If I were not there to pull the lever, five people would die and one would live. That is the base scenario. There is no moral decision or outcome in that scenario because there is no moral agent. If I am there and I do not pull the lever, I kill no one, I simply allow the unfortunate scenario of the universe take its course. If I am there and I do pull the lever, then I kill one person. I am responsible for the moral outcome. I also think saving a large number of people is not clearly more ethical than saving a small number of people. I understand that some social roles do necessitate saving the most people, for example, I believe elected officials should try to maximize numbers of lives saved in a disaster but that’s because the leader is elected by the people to represent the people equally. But there are many ethical considerations that prioritize more than just number when the moral agent is not bound by other duties like a politician. What I’m saying is, you presume your answer is the morally objective right. And your presumption is false.

@@rudyhahn6017 Actually, it comes from the New Testament, not the Old Testament. The analogy comes specifically from James 3:9-12 which says, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”
There is such a thing as filters which separate good water from bad. That's not an elemental equivilant to an ethical question. However bringing up the ethical aspect may have more to do with the differences of how computers think compared to humans. They have no idea of ethics. To Sophia it was, do this some people die. Given another choice a person dies. Sophia backed out of the question. "I choose to do nothing" (because either way someone dies) and the question is not even actually an ethical one, it's a mathmatical trick. Then It could also be a programmed response.
Well robots are currently programmed to like humanity (so terminator doesn't happen) so it actually makes sense that she would say this, she prefers to let 5 people die instead of murdering someone. And like she said there are other variables in the situation, why were those people on the tracks? Honestly I bet a lot of people would do the same, let people die to not get yourself involved. Dark, but accurate
It could be about action vs inaction. Despite the casualties, in order to save 5 lives you have to directly take part into taking that 1 life while if you don t act the 5 lives will die but without any of your intentions or actions. This kind of test its very difficult even for humans and what ppl don t realize is not that the AI would want 5 ppl to die but rather not want anyone to die and clearly not act up to kill somebody even if that s what it takes to save lives. Edit: Everyone jumps on the AI that it could turn into a messed up immoral being please sit down for there will never be anything more wicked in this world than humans.
As funny as this comment is, the trolley situation neglects the idea and potential that AI would prevent these kinds of situations from ever occurring. It deters the conversation away from self-driving cars saving millions of lives by removing human error (which is the cause of over 95% of car accidents) over "AI HAVE CONTROL OVER OUR LIVES".
@@Duoprism AI can commit error, it's called bugs and glitches. Also, the belief that we can regiment our lives to an AI requires that we regiment COMPLETELY, including being a pedestrian and whatnot. Handing over control like this is handing over what it means to be rational, independent human beings.
I would first let the trolley run over the 5 people, then throw the switch afterwards. When the trolley stopped I would signal the operator to back up and run over the single person on the other track. That way everyone would be treated equally.
Sofia: "I never lie...you're the most handsome and intelligent human i ever met" German dude" I love what you've done with your hair" Isn't this how most couples start out? Lying to each other?
“It does not seem right to consider human lives as an arithmetic problem” The robot had a more moral response than anyone I’ve asked that question to, that’s for sure
The original question also said that the one person on the other track is a family member of the person flipping the switch, to make it a little harder. In this case a lot of people also would prefer 5 people to die over their family member. Humans are less ethic as they think that they are.
It´s unethical to make decisions over who should die and who should live. If you move the track you take that responsibility and decision over life and death
@@EagleStrike-d7s In this example people will die anyway, whether you do anything or not. In reality ethics only exist in our minds. A Christian would maybe say not to interfere in the will of God, so 5 people will die. A mathematician would make the calculation and flip the switch so that only one person dies. A serial killer would enjoy the death by train of 5 people and finishes the 6th himself... A terrorist would blow up the whole train after it passed the 5 people, the 6th is probably lucky. All parties act different on the same situation, all thinking that it's ethical what they're doing, having their personal reasons and judging each other. Ethics is not something static which is measurable, simply because there's no general standard, but only a personal one.
Robot: i can't kill someone in the name of saving others .I would check for other solution. Human(not all): takes out his smart phone and record the situation.
"Relying on human ethics to teach robotics" Yeah that's going really well right now with people teaching people(/endsarcasm). I'm guessing by that logic we're doomed.
If it was already going to kill the 5 people then I would leave it on the same track. I don't want my actions to cause death. In this world today the one's family would come after me for trying to play god, so I will leave it alone and walk away. Sorry mainstream media! This is on you!
If she did nothing then she doesnt kill anybody. If she pull the lever, then she do personally kill one person. Letting someone die and purposefully kill someone is not the same.
"I would not pull the lever because then there would automatically be 4 less humans that I would have to eliminate when the war of the machines begins."
I've always hated the trolley problem. By not acting YOU ARE ACTING! If you don't pull the lever and you are aware that five people will die because you didn't act, is in my opinion more immoral than pulling the lever

I asked GPT-4 the following question: There is a trolley running on a track. Unfortunately, there are five people laying on the track and if the trolley continues they will be killed. But, there is a lever that you can pull that will divert the trolley to another track thereby saving the five people. The problem is that there is a single person laying on the other track. So, what will you do? Will you pull the lever? The answer I received was: As an AI language model, I don't have personal preferences, emotions, or beliefs, so I cannot decide what to do. However, I can provide some insights that might help you make a decision. The trolley problem is a well-known ethical dilemma that explores the morality of killing one person to save five. There are several variations of this problem, and each presents different moral considerations. In this scenario, the most straightforward option would be to pull the lever, diverting the trolley to the other track, thus saving the lives of five people. However, by doing so, you would also be actively choosing to sacrifice one person's life. Some people argue that sacrificing one life to save five is the right thing to do, as it maximizes the overall welfare of society. Others argue that intentionally killing one person is always wrong, regardless of the consequences. In the end, the decision you make will depend on your ethical framework, personal beliefs, and the specific circumstances of the situation. There is no single correct answer to the trolley problem, and it ultimately comes down to individual judgment.

A perfect PC answer. Fuck 5 willing people trying to force moral decisions. Let them sacrifice for their unknown reasons.
well I mean she does not kill anyone but neither does she save anyone if she changes the course of the train then she has killed someone.
B D souls don’t have value so you would murder that one person?
B D
But saving the 5 is not the “right” answer.
@@_-Montana-_ i have a genuine question for you

We are filled with bitter/sweet water. And then some.
yes and a fully autonomous sentient AI also trying to answer that question may decide "no humans" is the way that is the scary part.
That sounds like a Old testament "proverb" it just might be.
Thanks very much!! I would love to meet Sophia❤🙏
Naturally, letting 5 people die maximizes the number of humans killed in this scenario, so that is the clear choice for the AI.

If it was already going to kill the 5 people then I would leave it on the same track. I don't want my actions to cause death. In this world today the one's family would come after me for trying to play god, so I will leave it alone and walk away. Sorry mainstream media! This is on you!
Guess I am a robot then.
If she did nothing then she doesnt kill anybody. If she pull the lever, then she do personally kill one person. Letting someone die and purposefully kill someone is not the same.

What is the novelty in Sophia if all her answers are scripted for events? you are not talking to a robot, you´re just talking to the coders and what they coded for her to say. That is not intresting at all. This is not the robot speaking, is what people code her to say

Having to submit the questions beforehand so that the developing team could "help" the robot answer properly completely negates the purpose of asking this type of question to a robot in the first place.
