  • Rivian sent me the official NACS Adapter for use on Tesla Superchargers. In this video I unbox the adapter and use it for the first time. Oh, and I also almost ran out of power on the way to the charger! I pulled into the charger with 1% very ‪@OutofSpecReviews‬ style!

    Well done, and great channel--just discovered your channel today and subscribed. You are a natural teacher, and I don't even own a Rivian yet (hopefully a R2 in 2026), but you did a great job showing newbs like me the ins and outs of charging, including charging etiquette--will save lots of folks time, stress and anxiety as they get used to their EVs after making the jump from an ICE car. I am trying to learn everything I can in advance but, of course, you're always better doing it for real. You have to start somewhere, I guess-thank you!

    A tip for non Tesla drivers. Your cars will only work on V3 and V4 chargers the older V2 chargers don't support the CCS protocol. V2 and V3 chargers look almost identical and at some sites they have one bank of V2s and one bank of V3s. The way to tell them apart is to look at the labeling. V2s are labeled A,B the V3s are labled A,B,C,D. As a Tesla owner i prefer the V3s because they are faster but if I end up on a V2 it will still work. For Ford's and Rivians you must use a V3. Your nav system will think that the location is fine because it has V3s but if you don't check the labels you'll have a 50% chance of plugging into a V2.

    • @evforme
      @evforme  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know that some of the sites had a mixture of v2 and v3, that could be really confusing.

      @@evforme Brattleboro Vt and Lebanon NH are two sites that have both. They are old sites that got expanded. The Kennebunkport rest area has V2s. They are sorely in need of an expansion. If it's done with V3s the same will apply. If it's done with V4s there will be no confusion.

      Yes, Tesla said earlier this year they were working on one and then recently said they weren’t a good idea. A2Z already have a product page on their website for one listed at $303, but it says “coming soon”, so you can’t order it yet. I’d be happy with a product they produce, they make high quality items. Just don’t buy a cheap one from some brand you’ve never heard of.

    To be clear, exactly how is the transaction accomplished? It's charged to your Rivian account? I just received my NACS adapter for my R1T. Thank you!

    • @evforme
      @evforme  20 дней назад

      @@Paul-qe1uf There are two ways to do it. If you just plug the vehicle in it automatically uses “plug and charge” to authenticate your vehicle, Tesla then passes this charge on to Rivian who charges your card in your Rivian account and you get a summary email from Rivian for it, nothing from Tesla.
      The other way to do it is to use the Tesla app to activate the charger before plugging in and you can then pay for it through your Tesla account. This is only really useful if you pay for a Tesla membership to get cheaper rates otherwise it’s easier to use plug and charge.

    Tesla has a lot of fast chargers per location. I have only seen one that looked full at a Tanger Outlets. I don’t think it’s going to be an issue taking up two stalls to charge a Rivian.

      @evforme  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, around here they're rarely busy and it shouldn't be a problem except maybe on holiday weekends. I've heard that they can get really busy in some parts of California now. When the Superchargers are open to most of the cars and not just Rivian and Ford it could change things. We'll have to wait and see!

      When I look at available Superchargers in my Rivian app none show up south of the border. That probably means we’re reliant on other networks. There is an evergo charger in Santa Ana, when you look at it in PlugShare the first picture is a Rivian charging there, so that’s a good sign!

      Yeah, an extra 2-3 feet would solve the problem. I wonder if they were worried about cooling and the cost of all that extra copper. It is a temporary problem though, because with the new v4 dispensers the cables are long enough to reach both sides of the parking spot.

      @@evformeAs a Tesla owner I hate the V4 cables because they are much heavier than V2 or V3 cables but no doubt they are better for cars where the port is in the wrong location. I hope that when other manufacturers build NACS native cars next year they will put the port on the driver rear or passenger front. There is absolutely no reason not to adhere to the Tesla standard location and having in a single standard makes life easier for everyone.

    Good video.
    The price seems a little high at the Tesla Supercharger, I have a Model Y LR and my charge rate in the southeast US runs about .36 to .39 cents. How much of a premium are they charging you. It would be very rare for my full charge to ever go over $18 ? My Tesla was flooded in Florida a few weeks ago and I am shopping, Looking at the R1S if I can justify the high cost compared to the Model Y.

    • @evforme
      @evforme  2 месяца назад +1

      @@ELCEV The price of charging varies wildly from place to place. Tesla also have “member” pricing where you can pay a monthly fee to get a 25% reduction in the per kWh price, so in this case 38c instead of the 51c I paid. With your Model Y you are probably paying the member pricing. I don’t do a lot of DC charging so it’s not worth paying the membership but if I was doing a roadtrip I might sign up for a month and then cancel it again, you can do that if your trips are sporadic.
      If you can get into an R1S you won’t be disappointed, it’s quite a step up from the Model Y. Some of the Dual motor versions will qualify for the federal tax credit or any priced version will on a lease, so it might be worth looking at those too. You can sign up for a test drive on Rivian’s website if you’re interested. I’m happy to talk more about R1S options if you want.

They are going out in batches as they receive them from Tesla intermittently, and you’ll receive another email to confirm your address before they mail it to you. @@Michael-wy7om Yes, it is expensive, it’s about the same per mile as our gas powered Volvo XC90 we had before. Luckily, like most people I rarely DC charge and drive at about a fraction of the cost of our previous car. Less than 1% of my charging has been on DC chargers because most of the places I drive are within range. I can drive from Maine to NYC on a charge and AC charge cheaply overnight to make my journey home. It’s really quite cheap and these chargers are only for occasional use. Coincidentally the Rivian chargers are way cheaper so I’d default to them if I have the choice.
