Can we stop making everything political?

  • Why does everything has to be about politics? Why can't we talk about issues and listen to each other with empathy - without immediately issuing political labels or jumping to conclusions? Openmindedness should be apolitical, let's learn to exist in the grey zone.
It's much easier to categorize things as one political camp or the other - and guess what? Politicians use it to their advantage. We're being divided and trained to think in categories. Let's stop that. I know it's harder to make our own opinions, but I believe in us, we can do it.

Totally agree. This is a universal issue. In China, I've had acquaintances criticize me for using a spoon and fork when eating, accusing me of being on the side of "Western imperialism" that needs to be destroyed, and demanding that I use only chopsticks to prove my loyalty to my Chinese nationality. It is absurd that even something as basic as how I choose to eat can be politicized. I believe this social phenomenon is deeply connected to toxic masculinity. In a society like China, toxic masculinity is deeply ingrained. Being able to listen and empathize with others is seen as feminine and, therefore, a sign of weakness. Conversely, those who engage in belligerent behavior, verbally or physically, are seen as masculine (a highly commendatory term in Chinese culture), while those who refrain from such behavior are labeled as cowardly and effeminate. Similarly in Chinese politics, during the time when Hu Jintao served as China's president (2012-2022), many folks disliked him. Why? Even though many geopolitical conflicts were avoided during his tenure, some people still expressed a desire for conflict with other nations. Because they felt he was "too friendly" and "too collaborative" with Western and neighboring countries. This was because the will and ability to initiate a conflict was seen as a sign of masculinity, which was highly valued.

I don't think those who do this, are gonna listen. Plus it isn't just politics, it's all labels, people often ask "where are you from?" to get to know someone, thinking that by knowing the answer to that question they know who they are talking to, etc. Which is ludicrous, but yeah that's what it is.

    • @StereotypeBreakers

I’m sure they won’t, but I feel like starting a dialogue about this is important among those of us who will listen. It’s something we shouldn’t take as normal, you know? Because if it’s normal, it will creep up into our behavior too

Politics is actually about power: who has it, who has not got it, and all the what, why, where, when, how and why questions you can ask about it. It is on equal terms with Ethics (morals), Ontology (being), Aesthetics (experience) and Epistemology (knowledge). There's a really interesting book called 'The Art of Power - Machiavelli, Nietzsche, and the Making of Aesthetic Political Theory' which explores some of these matters, but particularly the place where experience and power intersect, that I think goes beyond a lot of discussions around what we normally give the time to in these discussions. The point here about putting politics aside is important in the casual sense, because it undermines reasonable discussion and it creates a lot of ill-will and pushes people aside (often the most powerful sweep away the less powerful - a far bigger theme of discussions on the Instagram feed. But in the more precise way, it's obviously not possible to push these things aside, as except in an academic way, they are all intertwined.

    • @JonathanJewellosophy
      @JonathanJewellosophy 2 года назад +1

We are so polarised at the moment, the key is to find ways to bring the temperature down so we can (patiently) make our way towards the hotter topics and emotive subjects. But with all the challenges we face that are of immediate moral priority it is a huge thing to expect patience. And because it is so easy to get angry and 'lose it' (either side) in these kinds of discussions (especially with people actively trying to 'trigger' the other), it is difficult often to see if there's any progress at all. I think though, until we take an approach that considers all those aspects and, in particular, 'Value' (or 'Axiology,' to use the philosophy term for that field of study which overlaps with the others) then it is going to be a long and hard journey to where we need to go.

I like your thinking. I also see that regrettably our society is being badly manipulated and polarized. Politics shouldn't be that deep into us, we shouldn't say "I'm a democrat" or I'm a republican" at all, it's absurd, unless we're in the payroll of a political party. We should, instead, be smarter and vote one way or the other according to what a specific candidate offers at that particular election, no party deserves our blind support. Balance is key. All politicians are just trying to gain and maintain power, that's their only goal, so, accordingly, they pretend to "defend" our ideals as a way to get our votes (or getting more audience in the case of media). Their target population is divided into 2 main groups which, as we know, are labeled as conservatives and liberals, but that's only the way they label us to target us, while the reality is not all the way black or all the way white, there are multiple shades in-between.
One of the oldest definitions of politics is: "the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government". So, we need to understand that the current division that our society is suffering is just us being played.
As an individual, following your ideals has nothing to do with politics and people should be smart enough to recognize that we are all entitled to pursue our personal ideals as long as they don't step into the collective ones.

The more you look into things, the more you realise the issue isn't left or right ; Democrat or Republican ; socialism or capitalism. The issue is people. We are stubborn human beings and there are nice and compassion people and spiteful and mean people in every group and we all use anything to justify treatment of others. We ALL do it. It is easy to blame religious people using the Bible to justify harm but literally the most brilliant minds of the day once were tethered to the four humours theory of medicine and no amount of scientific data was enough to change their minds. They were so unrelenting to change their minds even if it could result in saving more lives because it would mean that they were the cause of many lives being lost over the course of their career so they rejected the idea of microorganisms. Literally no one is immune to believing an ideology regardless of its harms to others.

"The personal is political". It becomes political when someone uses their money and power to create laws to limit my freedoms/access to equal opportunity based on things outside of my control. I'm not going to be empathetic or listen to someone who wants me dead (or legislated out of existence). I would suggest reading some Black Feminist thinkers to get a better idea of what I'm talking about ("A Black Feminist Statement" by the Combahee River Collective, Audre Lorde's essay "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House" are two good places to start).

There are a number of pieces of this that I agree with (about how divided and otherwise screwy the political climate is in the U.S., and a need for empathy, respect, etc.)... and a number where I find fault with what you're saying: e.g. it seems to me you're conflating some ideas together here, that in my mind are quite different, e.g. politics and politicians (1:43), while differentiating politics and issues in a way that makes them sound completely unrelated. If we take politics as "the set of _activities_ that are *associated with* _making decisions in groups_ , *or* other forms of _power relations between individuals_ , such as the distribution of resources or status." (Wikipedia's opening line, emphasis added), then this video is absolutely political. Which I'm fine with, except that it's purporting to be about _not_ being political -- indeed, an often made political statement, that (and I get that you're aiming for something different here, so please just understand this as context for why I feel it's important to speak up here) too often gets used to (attempt to) silence dissent.
Like if I said to you (I'm not! but if I did), "why do you have to make this political?!?" when you bring up, say, "women's rights" (4:13), I hope you would see that as me being a dismissive asshole (because I would be, if I said that that way, in that context). This is a tactic often used by men to silence women, and by white people to silence people of color. So, be wary of it. Because while the bulk of what you're saying is _much_ less problematic... IMHO, the title and your basic thesis still is, because it implicitly gives permission to use this message as a way to silence people. And because I can tell that's not what you're after, I want to implore you to stop (7:35!) saying things like "Can we stop making everything political?" Because it seems to me that's falling into the very trap you're warning us against.
Sorta going on a tangent, but it'll come back:
7:05 - I disagree! Indeed: to be open minded, instead of bigoted, is a powerful political act!
Which takes me to where Tiph Browne has already gone: "The personal is political." Open mindedness is political. _Everything_ between humans is political. And I give a heartfelt second to Tiph's recommendation of reading Black Feminist thinkers.
Again, I agree with your calls for empathy, listening, etc. And to the extent that by "politics" you mean "politicians, political parties, and discourse that's specifically constrained to realms dictated thereby", then sure, let's be less "political" in that sense. But your whole brand, in both the previous and current forms, are _intensely_ political, in the more general sense. And I'm glad of that! That's good! (Which I say, as a political statement) I hope you can learn to be, too.
Because yes, re 7:13 - they are indeed manipulating us, and dividing us.
So, let's _get_ political, _together_ with each other, and change this oppressive system for the better. Please.
And perhaps it's helpful if I bring in some specific thoughts for reframing:
8:42 - maybe that's not bringing politics into this, but bringing divisiveness in. "Can we stop making everything divisive?" would be much easier for me to get behind.
Hopefully this is me coming at this nicely and politely (re 9:06/9:30). I certainly intend it as a call *in* rather than a call *out* ... Because yes, 10:02 - I'd be happy to have this start a discussion, in case I've been less than clear, or you disagree about something, or whatever.
(And: unfortunately, 10:46 is... spot on... yet 11:00 - it's political because such people are literally and deliberately trying to repress women. They think "making decisions in groups" is, or should be, the exclusive purview of men. They believe patriarchy is a good thing... an ordained-by-God thing. It's political! And by suggesting that women should be confident and empowered (which _I_ heartily agree with), you're making a political statement that's in direct opposition to their political beliefs.)
12:49 is so spot on... 12:59 I so strongly disagree with! It's a politics to be proud of, but it - this whole video - is intensely political!! It just doesn't necessarily have anything to do with political _parties_ and _candidates_ and such.
14:36 - I confront you on your call for being non-confrontational! "non-confrontational" is another silencing tactic. Confrontations, conflicts... these things happen, and they are not the problem. Being rudely dismissive is a problem. Being deliberately mean is a problem. Being bigoted is a problem. Confrontation, per se, is not a problem. It's a necessary thing. Allow confrontation; restrict... meanness, or... something. I'm out of words, I think. (And have probably said too many anyway; sorry. I don't have the energy to figure out how to be brief.)

"you can't control the decisions of government" - worth exploring dialectically, because both of the following are true:
      - one individual can't control the decisions of government.
      - every individual *can* _influence_ the decisions of government.
And, too, the people in government are just people. It's all people. We can exert influence, especially when we band together in various ways.

  • @SianaGearz

Political means concerning decision-making and policy. There's nothing wrong with being political. As such every discussion about actual issues people are having and how to solve them is explicitly and necessarily political, you can't deny it, it's unhelpful and wrong.
What we have to be able to do is have political discussions without them being sabotaged by a polarised world view where some party's agenda is all or nothing, we have to be able to get back to discussing political topics on the individual merit of each possible argument, and respect every individual who wants to speak. And listen before we speak, just listen to people - you don't have to believe their every word or opinion, you just have to not insult them. How hard can it be?

First you have to listen to both sides. In the U.S. women have all the rights. What you want is direct money from the government.
Yes, women in the west have all the rights now. They have rights that men don't have - reproductive rights, rights to not have their genitals mutated, right to have custody of their child, right to have the legal definition of rape and abuse include them. They also have 'rights' that aren't actually human rights that men don't have like 50% less likely to be arrested and convicted and serve 60% less prison time for the same crime.
Whenever we ask what right do men have that women don't - it is always women don't FEEL safe walking alone at night. That's not a human right. Women's biology as well as their social upbringing makes women more afraid because that is how we evolved. They are also statistically safer than any other demographic including children. The group that apparently hates women is far more likely to target others within their own group.
And treating women and men equally depends on how you define equally. Men and women want different things and women valuing a man with a bigger bank account than her is gonna result in women and men earning different salaries. Men and women already have to same opportunities. While women attend and graduate college in greater numbers than men in general, poor men and women are generally equally as unlikely to attend college. This actually is true for much of history when only the 3% of white rich men got to attend college and rich white women achieved parity in 1920 while the working class men and women equally did not attend college.
