    I'm a 50yr old classically trained pianist, have played for 44 years (not that I pursued performance, but I immersed myself in study/practice for 12 yrs & it's an indelible part of who I am).
    Ren is quite astonishing, for being self-taught on piano.
    He said he had 2 lessons when he was little and it didn't go well (ie he hated it).
    It'd be quite unusual for a formally-trained pianist to work with the technique he uses; it's more visible in some of the shots in "For Joe" than it is here, but he seems to carry quite a bit of tension in the tendons of his hands (& therefore fingers), by dropping his wrists while keeping his fingers curled as his default hand position. Reduces your agility/control & ability to "feel" the bottom of the keyboard, while potentially setting you up for carpal tunnel.
    Like, if you were spending hours a day pushing yourself in practice & performance year after year.
    The most genius concert pianists of the last 150 years all have their quirks of hand position, don't get me wrong. But very few will have managed to achieve the heights of technical and expressive excellence with a tense default hand position.
    For as much lifetime pursuit of the heights of concert pianist level performance as Ren will be working on (ie, that's not a goal for him), it's perfectly workable (that seems like I'm throwing shade at him but I promise it's not intended as a sleight) and he's clearly able to compose and perform exactly what is needed in order for him to express his musical ideas on the instrument. And it's beautiful.
    Edit: filmed in Drumheller. Not sure how purposefully Ren chose it to represent "excavating layers of (pre)-history" ... but the fossils that come out of there are some of the most well-preserved/complete fossils we have of that era, and here Ren is, examining his memories and emotions of a friend he lost in a different era of his life.
    Yes, treatment has been in Calgary for the past more than year.
    PPS - I enjoy hearing your opinions.

      Thank you for this insight into his technique! I always wanted to learn to play but I was terrible and the brain fog meant that I didn't improve at all. (My uncle is a piano tutor and I was a lost cause.) It's fascinating to hear about the little 'tells' that distinguish Ren's autodidactic learning from more conventional training. ❤

      @@MissMeKate it's so frustrating to want to do a thing and even have the resources available to tackle it, theoretically... only to have your brain say NOPE, NOT UP FOR IT. 💔
      Ren's such a fascinating accumulation of talents and obsession and hard work and heart. I doubt I'll ever be bored of hearing bits and pieces of what made him Ren at different moments of his life, though I wouldn't ever "ask" it of him outside of when there's something he wants to share.

      I do remember Rwn saying he wrote sone piano that he could not execute for Money Game 3. For the studio, he had to use his production equipment, but in the video, they had a professional pianist.

    • @rebeccaburnell9319
      @rebeccaburnell9319 7 месяцев назад +4

      @@francesdoll4039 Yep! My guess is that it's the bit starting where Jimmy turns 30, at the 4:04 timestamp. The right hand part is playing bits that are bouncing and jumping around all over the upper keyboard while the left hand is playing a "bass" line way down at the other end of the piano. I suspect he could even play *that* with practice, but it might be kind-of tenuous and prone to mistakes/unclear soundings of notes for him until he practices up. It's not a SUPER hard passage, like, it's not full of crazy stretches of the hand or super long, lightning-fast, finger-twisting runs, but it strikes me as being the trickiest bit of the piano part. "Just" takes grilling it into your muscle memory in minute detail, over and over and over and over and over in slow motion and then over and over and over and over and over a little faster and then a little faster and a little faster... maybe it might take you an unreasonable amount of practice to nail it down at the pace you need to play it at, but if you keep putting in the hours patiently, you're likely to keep making progress.
      I *loved* that he told us about it!

  • @yustymusic
    @yustymusic 7 месяцев назад +9

    I loved your discussion. As a musician that went to musical school (Ren is self taught, I am not) I can tell you that memorizing notes is a combination of talent, feeling and most important - lots and lots of hours playing the same thing over and over again until you're not thinking about it anymore. As my teacher used to say - First, you have to know the notes, then you have to work it through until you get to feel it with your soul and fingers, and only then you can experience it and share it with others that others could feel it too. If you miss one step in practising, others will also miss some component of listening to the art piece and it won't make sense to them completely. So I don't know if Ren is doing all these steps but I think it's a nice way of looking at art. And I always found such a pride and beauty in those words about creating art and memorizing it.

    Ren is completely self-taught. He has been playing music on piano and guitar since he was about ten. This was filmed in Drumheller, Alberta. Ren is in Calgary receiving treatment for his autoimmune conditions. He’s just incredibly talented. He also mixes his own music on logic, and has a major hand in directing every video he’s in. Yes, and he can act, and would love to do a Netflix series.

    Ren's not classically trained. I've seen classically trained pianists react to Ren's piano playing and they are all fascinated by his technique because no piano teacher would teach you to play as he does. Ren plays about a dozen instruments well. Half of them ridiculously well! He's self-taught on all of them, with 2 minor exceptions...
    He had 2 guitar lessons, before deciding they were a waste of time and that he could learn more quickly doing it himself. His primary method became slowing down RUclips videos of his favourite guitarists and trying to replicate what they did. He'd do it over and over until he was satisfied, then move on. It's a method he replicated with other instruments. He also has a unique visualisation of the notes and rhythms that he plays on the guita, where he sees them as moving patterns and shapes, across the fretboard. I'm not sure if it's so with all instruments but I've heard him talk about this with regards to the guitar. I should imagine it's a similar story with the bass though. The only other exception, to being entirely self-taught is with the cello. He did take cello lessons for a while but his illness meant giving them up but he continued to learn and practice, by himself, when he was able.
    During the nightmare period of his illnesses, which lasted 7 or 8 years, the chronic pain, resultant fatigue from lack of sleep and the seemingly endless brain fogs and the host of other symptoms, made it impossible to create or practice, most of the time, so when he had energy at all, music was 'll that he did. He couldn't go out, so everything went into practicing, writing and creating music!
    Having said that, he was obsessed with music long before he became ill. He was writing music before he reached his teens. He'd take his guitar absolutely everywhere he went. At school, at lunchtime, he's spend the entire lunchbreak, in the music room, practicing playing various instruments. Apart from socialising with friends, music was pretty much all that he did and he'd often combine the two, especially as some of his friends played too. He still practices playing the guitar and piano pretty much every day, unless he's too sick to do so and he practices other instruments frequently too.
    ADHD usually makes you lose interest and concentration really quickly and really easilt but... if you find something that consistently satisfies that dopamine craving, then you gain an almost inhuman focus. Ren has credited his ADHD with playing a big role in his musical development. With music his focus can be so intense that an entire day can pass and he realises he's forgotten to eat, or do anything else at all! :)
    Having said all that, he obviously has an innate talent for music. Combine the two and you have the musical genius that is Ren! :)

    I’m a self-taught musician. The idea of relying on written text to get through a piece of music is daunting to me, I’d much rather do it from memory. Think that’s fairly normal, unless you’re part of an orchestra I guess.
    As for the ’it came out of nowhere’ thing, I completely understand that. Sometimes you sit down very deliberately to try and write something, come up with ideas etc. Sometimes you’re just absent-mindedly playing without any particular intentions and you’ll go ‘oh, what’s that? That’s great!’.

    Joe was his best friend that jumped off the bridge in their home town on Christmas Eve I think. Joes girl friend called Ren who lived closest to the bridge, and although he was at the onset of his illness, he ran to the bridge, calling Joes cell phone getting a busy signal for a bit, but before he reached the bridge the signal was lost. Colum was one of the friends that Ren and Joe hung with all the time. Colum is mentioned in "Suicide" which Ren wrote about Joe. Ren also wrote about Joe in "Freckled Angel". Joe had alot of freckles. I suggest you listen to "Suicide", "For Joe" with starting with "Freckled Angel". They are kind of a trilogy.

    Having the whole song in your head memorized and just knowing where to go next, I'm assuming it helps that he wrote it, but speaking as someone who played piano for years and memorized long pieces for showcases, it's muscle memory. You do it so many times over and over, you just know, like knowing all the steps of a dance routine, your brain and body just know what follows.

    In Rens Money Game part 3 he did the musical score for that I think, some of it. For both piano, some of it borrowed, but also he did score for the violin and cellos. I don't have the full backstory or behind the scenes on the music part. He really is truly amazing. You guys Just keep being honest. Some do have trouble being able to express an opinion on music because a lot of people do not always 'understand music'. As you mentioned, how does one know how to play the piano, know what keys to hit etc. I. It's knowing rhythm, a "so called ear". 2. Just having the natural ability 3. They are truly motivated. I figured one time, for myself, to start taking piano lessons, a long long time ago when I was younger. I thought I could pick it up pretty quick as I was a fast typist and memorized a typewriter and fast on adding machines back in my old clerical days. With piano you need to learn a lot more, music scale, notes, what does each key represent. What do the white keys mean, the black keys. Where is middle C. What are flats and sharps etc. I tried also reading written music so I could play a song from black and white music written piece. I did learn some but not enough haha. After short time with lessons I broke one of my fingers on my left hand and was unable to continue. I hung on to my little cheap spinet piano on the off chance one day I would try again. I married someone that did play a little, and we also bought an organ and I enjoyed playing that, it was fun. But I still wasn't good enough and got uninterested over time with other things. Like raising a family, always keeping me busy. I passed the piano on to my daughter that showed some interest, but she ended up having to sell it because she needed money. Anyway, sorry to go on for long. Guitar is hard to play, hurts the fingers I know because I tried that also, I just love music and wished I could play. Piano is a bit more tricky. Practice practice practice as with most things in life. I sang in school glee club, my daughter played trombone in high school, but she didn't stay with it. She's artistic and really just loved drawing, painting art more.

    Guy is fearless, honest, with a willingness to uncomfortably bare his soul, just to help others.
    I find it incredibly inspirational really.
    I think calling him classically trained is probably a stretch. He did go to a music university, but it was in the height of the beginning of his illness.
    I'd also seen Ren mention his mother being a piano teacher, but him saying he essentially was a 💩 student. 😅
    My take is that he gained strength in his play after those years, where he was essentially self teaching. So perhaps a little of both.
