Today we are going to take it slow and extract some new meaning to those notes that you have been playing all this time. This video is about extracting all the expression from your guitar.
We are going to use a B Aeolian backing track and as usual, you can download it for free.
In music when you take your time and wait to make your point, it's when you are most effective. If you have around three minutes to play over a track you don't want to say everything you have to say in the first thirty seconds.
Remember that over these minor tracks you can always rely on the minor pentatonic scale. I will use a standard pentatonic lick as my starting point. If you are just starting to play probably your first instinct is to play the lick strictly in time. But, if you want to be expressive you need to take your time and change how you feel the subdivisions.
Another way to get more expression out of your music is dynamics, changing the volume of what you are playing. A loud note is not necessarily the most powerful note, often a quiet note makes the listener pay more attention. Those softer notes can be very impactful.
One more resource for expressive playing is note choice. Remember that one note in itself does not mean anything, but played against another note can take a whole new meaning. As a player, you can choose different notes to convey different meanings over different chords.
Expressiveness is not about technique, but about taking your time. It's a mindset in which you are happy and excited about the fact that you are unique as a player. As I always say, nobody can play the way you play. There are twelve notes, but they can be played in millions of different ways.

My guitar level, still beginner. I have been working hard theory. My weaker point is practice and a good program. With your videos, I feel everything is becoming real and open.
And with your simple and so pleasant approach and moreover your colorful licks. Thank you so much David.
David i still watch your videos, i know you back then from GMC years ago man!
You have became my favourite improv guitarist I love your note choice and how you play, you play with feeling and not trying to play every note in a few seconds I like that and this video has helped me much love from the UK 🇬🇧
One of the best teacher here in yt. Thanks man

Man, I really love the way you play! Always the right note at the right time , the feel, the amount of attack on the right time! It is so subtile ! And so incredible melodic! I have learned a lot from you the past months.
Also a beautiful guitar tone . This is guitarplaying as it should be: it moves me !
Thanks man, I really hope you can continue spreading your passion and make a living out of it !
Greetings from Belgium ( of all places)
Merci beaucoup!!!
Wow!, that's so tasty!, I can feel the vibe!
This is awesome!! I wanna see how did you guys improvised with this amazing advices and backingtrack :) im doing good so far but my internet is so slow to upload one video haha
Hey David, another great lesson! For the last couple of years I’ve been using V picks (My favorite is the ghost pick) I only mention them because I noticed that you use them. I recently tried dragons heart picks...they take a little getting used to but, now I’m spoiled on them. Might be worth taking a look at.
dang he is good at teaching
I just became an intermediate guitar player in just 11:41 minutes. Watch this guys. Grab your guitar while watching this and I'm sure you won't gonna regret for it. Enjoy!
The guitar came down from heaven :)
This was spot on, exactly the lesson I was looking for. I never thought of playing around with tempo. Also what is the backing track used?
Thanks David 😀
Thanks so much man!
Here is a link to that backing track: bit.ly/2ZYEdNb
Brilliant lesson, Gary Moore had some real facial expressions!
Lmao
Can i get the backing track, please??
David, all your videos are of you playing sitting down. When you preform live, do you stand up? What position do you use for your guitar? I find that the angle of my arm greatly determines how well I play (how bent my wrist is). Could you comment on that at some point?
Good point! I never play live so it’s a no issue for me... Sorry I can’t help much!
David Wallimann - interesting. Since many (most) watching do, I think it would be an good point to cover. To position my guitar where it is when I am sitting down, it would have to be up around my chest. Not a good look-
Though I have seen some country players that do that. Thanks!
@@HughAllison I sit often when playing and wear a guitar strap with my Strat, so it sits relatively high, whether I'm sitting or standing. Not sure why some people think it's not a good look. It's sort of a retro, how the Beatles would play their guitars or even folk singers. I've seen and enjoyed listening to good blues and funk guitar players with their axes strapped up high. If you like it low by the hip then ya gotta stand while practicing.
@@JimLarranaga5k I do practice that way. I just don't think I've ever heard/seen it addressed (I am now going to do an exhaustive RUclips search). I've been playing out for 40+ years. I rarely preform sitting (only on Acoustic), because I sing as well- and standing is best for that. I think it warrants addressing, especially on a guitar teaching channel.

I liked the scruffy, slightly stoned looking version of you better.
same
Just wonderful, and you make it look effortless. But somehow it’s not.
I didn't know Doug demuro could play the guitar
Doug De Muro of guitar related videos
I m watching seriously
Ah, daka daka 🤷♂️
No lesson files. No tabs. No backing tracks.
Many attempts
There you go! guitarplayback.com/courses/youtube-sessions/
Im sick of using pentatonic scales. Please make a lesson on harmonic minor and other scales. RUclips tutorials are full of pentatonic blues lessons
u talk alot
So I’ve been told, but only on camera. Meet me in real life and you’ll think something wrong with me because I’m so quiet!!
