Craig has done what a lot of people wanted to do, explicitly call out the IBJJF. The ridiculous amount of money that you have to pay to compete, account registration process and the obvious bias in favor of Brazilians/Gracie schools make it an unwelcoming environment. Hopefully people start getting away from Carlos Gracie Jr’s play pretend world championship and start looking at other options.
Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP), Grappling Industries, ADCC. Abu Dhabi Grand Slam was a success recently and AJP is more affordable in general. I like the rulesets and stalling penalties are harsher.

There’s some truth to that…. I competed in Worlds in 2005 in Brazil, hit 2 perfect take downs and the Brazilian referee said “pulled guard” and no points, lost the match because of it and vowed to never waste my time with IBJJF again.
Last time I competed in ibjjf I had to move up a weight class, got the number 1 seed(Brazilian) and had him in a loop choke. He rolled off the mat to escape because he was about to go out. Should’ve been a dq but wasn’t and restarted us on the feet. Ended up tapping because the dude was neck cranking tf out of me and the ref allowed it. Funny enough it was one of the guys suspended for peds after worlds last year. Never again

And i think his criticism of gi jj is less about the gi itself than it is about the flawed business model it keeps hanging onto.

The dirtiest thing IBJJF does imo is not refunding the registration fee which is 150+ dollars, even if you get injured. lol. I recently was going to compete at the San Diego open, but got injured about 1 month prior to the event, I requested a refund since I knew I wasn't gonna be able to compete and they denied it... Such a rip off, Unbelievable.

This happens all over the worlds with Brazilians, I just saw it happen twice to a friend in Perth Every sweep and sub attempt didn't get him any points, swept a guy multiple times and almost subbed him multiple times but because he was in the guys guard for 2 minutes he was docced 3 points and lost due to that, turns out the Brazilian ref knew the guy he was rolling, same thing happened at adcc trials Nothing defeats the Brazilian ego in BJJ

Conversion between men's semi finals and the finals was quick, too. Dunno if they showed it on Flo. All those sections of mat came up in a matter of minutes to make it one big mat instead of two. Days 1, 2, and 3 had 12 mats to start then day 4 had just two in the morning. At one point, tainan was competing on one mat and tye was on the other and you could see them reacting to the crowd cheering on the other match, unable to look to see what was happening. But yeah, watching those two mega mats come up in a matter of minutes was cool as heck.

When sports are trying to go to the Olympics, 1 criteria is that they have to be truly international and all the World champs can't just come from one country. IBJJF shows how much of a rinky dink money grab joke they are with their "World Championship" with all of the champs coming from Brazil.
It also requires a non-profit sanctioning body. The IBJJF is neither of those things but it sure acts like it's the sanctioning body of BJJ. If IBJJF is at the helm, it'll never be an Olympic sport.

If there had been nobody else signed up I could've got my registration fee back but since he no-showed that is apparently my fault and no refund. I then went on to WIN a 2nd gold medal in the open when nobody else signed up for that either. Double gold, zero matches, and a t-shirt for $150... Some business model.
Bring back the old days, where if you beat a Brazilian fair and square, they'd just gang up on you and break your shoulder at the pub so you could never compete again. Ah the great and honourable Brazilians!
Valid points, especially about IBJJF being too much USA/Brazil-centric which makes qualifying hard for others. However as long as IBJJF is the only organization complying with WADA/USADA-rules and doing doping testing, it remains as the only legitimate championship in our sport.
