    haha this brought a memory of my cousin making one of these. He used a torch to burn the paint off like that, but forgot to pull the plugs out on top. He got all the paint burnt off, went in to get a drink and when he went back outside it had crumpled like a tin can. He cussed for days because he had to go buy another barrel. It was a riot and he never lived that down hahaha

      @@RustisGold That plate that you're tacking inside the drum @7:14 will that keep the bottom of it from rusting and developing a hole in it? Bbq grills thats made out of 50 gallon drums seem to crumble and deteriorate after a while.

    • @RustisGold
      @RustisGold  4 года назад +1

      Exactly. The charcoal will not come in contact with the relatively thin surface of the 50 gallon tank so it will last longer. Also I store the BBQ in a dry and protected from rain place. 😊👍

    So using your video as a guide I was able to build me a similar grill. Unfortunately where I live we don’t have much available for purchase unless you wanna fork out $$$$ at Lowe’s or Home Depot. So I used bed railings for my angle iron. - Never again. I got the railings pretty much for free, but the money saved on angle iron was easily spent on sanding disks and wheels for my angle grinder, and it added HOURS to my project. Some were rusty, which sadly was still easier to remove than the friggen powder coated paint they use on those. Plus getting free stuff means getting different sizes.
    I had to purchase my round stock for the grate, and WAY overpaid at Lowe’s and Home Depot, who carry minimum stock btw. After it was done, I started searching around for metal yards (I needed two grills for what I was planning), and learned I could get all of the raw material, including brackets, handles, wheels, paint, etc. for around $150 (US).
    I wish I could upload photos. The grill came out beautifully - and I’m barely ok at building things. I didn’t know how to weld at all before I started this project, but I lucked up and found someone selling his gas-less MIG welder for $75. I bought some cheapo startup welding supplies from Harbor Freight, watched a few RUclips videos, and just got to it. I know there are a lot of flaws with my welds, and I wouldn’t put them through any extreme stress tests, but overall they turned out well. The welds joined beautifully at the joints for the angle iron, but for some reason the round stock didn’t want to bind. I had idk, somewhere around 120 weld joints to make for them, and they all gave me a difficult time, which led to overheating. So my grate is slightly bowed in the middle on the top and bottom grates. It’s not extremely bad, and though it annoys me to know that the bow is there because of my lack of skills, I actually kind of like the look. Others that have seen the grill likes it as well.
    Anyway, if anyone wants to see my results, let me know. You’ll have to let me know how to upload photos without creating my own video and uploading the link. But if that’s what I have to do, then I’ll do it. It’s nowhere near the quality of his grill, and is actually not 100% complete - after two weeks of spending every free hour working on this thing, as well as almost definitely ingesting WAAAAY too much iron dust, I was just ready to be finished with it.
    If I can build this thing, having absolutely zero professional training in any aspect of building, from measuring to cutting to welding, then anyone can and I encourage you to do so. I will recommend to use the smallest size angle iron that will work with the drum - it gets pretty heavy. Also, I found that the only drill bits worth using on the angle iron are Cobalt tips, with the easy start angle. I believe it’s 120 degrees, but don’t quote me on it. Every other bit burned out before making one hole - even the Titanium ones, who boast being able to drill through iron. The Cobalt costs more, but are definitely worth it. I bought a Milwaukee set for around $40 I believe. Hit me up if you have any questions.

    • @RustisGold
      @RustisGold  3 года назад +1

      Thank you very much for your extremely detailed comments!!
      Well done, Bravo!!!
      I will keep the part I liked the most from your comments: "...If I can build this thing, having absolutely zero professional training in any aspect of building, from measuring to cutting to welding, then anyone can and I encourage you to do so..."
      Exactly!! This is not nuclear physics! When I started to restore or create objects I also had no clue on what to do. All it needs is to get up from our couch and start doing things.
      I get so upset when people comment that it would be better to go and buy it from a store instead of spending time building it... They have no clue of the joy someone feels when creating something from scratch.
      This is the true philosophy of DIY. It's all about creation, not about saving a couple of dollars or euros by buying a cheap Made in China piece of junk...

      Here are the GRILL RACK DIMENSIONS
      The dimensions of the bottom grate are 90.5cm X 52cm.
      The dimensions of the top grate are 87.5cm X 22cm.
      The height of the top grate is 16cm.
      I used iron angles with dimensions 3cm X 3cm and 8mm diameter rods with 2cm gap in between the rods.
      However, I suggest that you have to make the grill fit your BBQ's dimensions.

    So many DIY smokers I see make from propane or water tanks that are very thick metal. How does the much thinner barrels hold up to the heat? I like the idea to keep weight down

    • @RustisGold

      Of course the thicker the metal the better. So far it seems to hold up fine... However when I don't use the Barrel BBQ I store it indoors away from rain and humidity.

    I can't see how you remove all the ashes in a convenient way, may be make a "trap door" at the bottom so that when open, all the ashes will fall down. Also you need to open an adjustable air hole on both side to control oxygen going in for the fire level. Thank you.

    • @RustisGold

      The ashes is not really a problem. I remove the grill and I collect them. However, you are right, I am going to open an adjustable air hole on the other side of the BBQ as well.
