Hi! Dimash is not a counter tenor. According to his vocal teacher and himself he is a tenor who has extended his range in both directions.

I have watched Dimash not just his singing perfections, but also some interviews. He is very talented & artistically humble in many ways... very competitive and shows what he earned 20 years later.
Dimash (26 years old from Kazakhstan) in addition to his exceptional natural talent, is backed by 20 years of musical academic training. He is an unusual, amazing performer in constant evolution and creativity. He is a Master Tenor graduate but his vocal register of six octaves and five semitones easily covers the baritone and soprano registers with the most extreme notes in each register.

I remember watching a dimash documentary, they mentioned contralto a couple of times. Contralto is usually a term for female singers not male however it was in the subtitles.
Don't think everyone can do this even with training. He has gift and training. It IS about weakness of human condition. Great reaction!❤️👍

Hello. Thank you for your reaction and appreciation of Dimash talents and vocal abilities. I have been a Dimash fan for almost 4 years. I honestly and personally believe, Dimash is a Music Virtuoso of our time. Dimash is a respectful and kind young man; who always credits his Family and his Team for his achievements and successes. He is from Kazakhstan and will be 27 (in May 2021).
Dimash has been formally training and performing for over 22 years. At the age of 5 years old it was determined he had perfect pitch. Dimash is known for his exceptionally wide (bass to soprano to whistle register) vocal range and breath control. It is recorded that he has a range higher than Six (6) Octaves and continues to improve his ranges and techniques. Dimash is a phenomenal Vocal Storyteller and Performer.
Dimash calls his style an "Innovation" [Neo-Classicism] in the Classical Crossover Genre.. Dimash combines many Styles such as Classical (Opera), Contemporary (Modern, Pop, R&B, Jazz, Rap), Estrada and traditional Kazakh folk music. Because of his “crossover” style/abilities there are many Vocal Coach/Singer debates as to whether Dimash is a Baritone, Tenor, Countertenor, Alto or Soprano.

It’s difficult to really categorize him. He also sings in the baritone range and his voice is just gorgeous in that register. His speaking voice is lower as well. I’ve heard that he calls his higher register a lyric tenor. Not sure that covers the whistle notes, though.

Dimash, singing here in 2017 in French, is a phenomenon from Kazakhstan. He started singing lessons at 5 when it was found he has perfect pitch. He is university educated with degrees in classical opera, another in contemporary music, pop and jazz with a major in vocal. He also completed a Broadway musical masterclass and has just (18th June 2020) completed his Masters specialising in Composition, and receiving his Masters degree with Honours, having achieved the maximum score of 100% and has now started his PhD. His range is over 6 octaves (almost 7 now) but Dimash is dismissive and says it's not how big your range is but what you do with it. He has won many prestigious singing competitions and is a decorated national treasure in his native Kazakhstan. He sings in 12 different languages, speaks fluent Kazakh and Russian, is pretty good with English but is still studying it along with Mandarin which he says is a very hard language to learn but again he is doing well with it.
In this performance he was 22 and in a competition for famous professional singers in China he was invited as a wildcard and after this one song was catapulted to worldwide stardom and became a pop superstar in China. He is also famous in Russia mainly for his neo classical work with Igor Krutoy and many of those works are very operatic, but he has now introduced pop songs there too. His vocals range from a rich bass baritone through to an extremely high soprano and his whistle register and has hit a D8 for 5 seconds with vibrato. He was on a solo world tour and in his concerts he sings for around 3 hours with an eclectic mix of styles. He is from a very musical family both parents and his sister sing, mother is a soprano. Dimash was offered a place with the Astana Opera in Kazakhstan but turned it down to follow his own path and he has been very successful thus far, but I suspect world domination will soon come his way. He is a multi instrumentalist too and is very competent with 8 instruments but can play just about anything. He is 26 now, and is mostly known as a live performer, he has released a triple platinum album ( platinum in 37 seconds, triple platinum in under an hour) and a new album will be released soon.
It has been recognised that his high notes are not whistle, but head voice, Dimash rarely uses his whistle register but when he does its spectacular like everything else about him. He has billions of fans worldwide and I am definitely one of them, and he calls us his Dears, as we are all as dear to him as his family, and he means it, he knows who helped to make him famous. He is a softly spoken, polite, elegant and very humble respectful young man. He deserves every bit of the success he is having, he has worked very hard for the past 20 plus years and now his dreams as a young 5 year old are coming true. There is an interview he did for BBC World Service in 2018 where the interviewer showed a drawing he did when he was 5 of him singing on a big stage with microphones, speakers and his beloved music cassettes showing his desire to be where he is now. His recent sellout world tour has been postponed due to the covid-19 epidemic but will restart when its safe to do so. He has concerts lined up in Dusseldorf, Prague and Minsk there will be others around the world including South America. Even though this was a year ago, I want to comment on that decending arpagiation.
I am a pianist who studied with a student of Corteau. He taught that runs should be like a string of pearls, each note distinct, separate, beautiful sounds by themselves. Dimash doesn't slur those notes. He hits each one beautifully, distinctly, with mathematical precision, yet not compromising the musicality of the line.
There are a lot of sloppy singers that would have ruined that run. Dimash nailed it, called it his own, never flinched, and moved on. Brilliant.
Any soprano would be proud to pull that off.

I completely agree; people CAN be born with raw, natural talent (obviously the case with Dimash) BUT to really make that talent into anything to get famous from, PLENTY of time and effort MUST be spent working on perfecting the talent. In this way, you turn talent into skill. AND you KEEP putting in the time and effort in order to continue to improve on your natural ability; the mark of a real, true professional is the drive, the desire to continuously improve on what you have. Practice, practice, practice. And more practice. And when you are done with that, EVEN MORE practice. But also, know when to give the voice a rest. Make sure your diet is right for what your body needs and does (for instance, Dimash swims in order to keep in shape, since it is one workout that covers the full body. It also helps him with lung training for better breath control). Be sure to get your sleep. The multitude of things that go into every day living.
Dimash started vocal training at five years old. He was twenty-two when he hit the stage in China. He put in SEVENTEEN YEARS worth of THE RIGHT training in order to do what he did here. This level of skill at his age takes that kind of dedicated time and relentless effort. NOBODY is simply born with SKILL.
Regardless, I DO think that to some extent, Dimash won the genetic lottery. But his parents and teachers and coaches also knew EXACTLY how to take great care with his voice while he was in puberty (what to do and what NOT to do), so he didn't come out sounding...like me.
I was a high soprano voice when I was little. I could totally keep up with the girls as far as that high, piercing note that drives every parent batty. I went into boot camp at eighteen years old and I was not done with puberty, my voice was not done changing. Guess what? Due to all that yelling and screaming during training, I have not tried singing since; I now sound like I was dragged down a gravel road face-first for at least a mile. It actually RUINED my voice. Timing is everything concerning puberty.

I compare Dimash to an Olympic-level athlete who has spent years training their muscles to do precisely what they want them to do when they want them to do it. The difference is that the muscles Dimash is training are the tiny ones that control the larynx, the vocal folds, the palette, and the tongue, along with the larger muscles of the diaphragm. Dimash then uses his muscle control to paint a vocal picture in the same way an artist uses a brush -- creating nuanced light and dark, strength and vulnerability, colour, texture, smoothness like velvet or satin, and the richness of dark chocolate. From this 2017 performance, you can witness how his voice develops even further and his performance skills grow and mature.
On a side note: From the age of 7 through adulthood, Dimash swam three hours per day, every day, as part of his vocal training to build stamina, lung capacity, and breath control. He still swims one hour per day, no matter where he is. No hot or cold drinks since age 16 to preserve his vocal cords. It just goes to show -- It ain't all footlights and applause.

I scour RUclips every day for vocal coach reactions to Dimash but haven’t come across you guys before. I heard sos for the first time about 6 months ago and was “dimashified” within seconds but with no vocal technique knowledge did not know why he was so awesome and unique I just knew he affected me like no other performer ever has. So I set out to find out what he does that is so special. Each new thing I learn just makes me appreciate him more. He lives every song, gives every ounce of himself to each performance. I have also learned everything I can about him as a person. He is so beautiful as a person and that also comes through to every performance. His story telling, his vocal artistry, his stage presence, his power, he is just flawless in everything. Even though he has been able to improve perfection remarkably is Singer performances are still really special to me. I love them.

Enjoyed each comment that was made, and you mentioned his training and lack of your knowledge concerning his background in training, in this video, 2017 The Singer in China, he is about 23, born May 5, 1994. His grandmother who raised him, as custom in their country for first born, till he was 10, he calls her Mom. Even though both his parents were involved also. Grandmother was an opera singer, Mother is also, and Dad is a singer, not opera. He started his lessons at 3, and also his music lessons, he plays I think about 4 instruments or so. Graduated and majored in music, has degrees in composition and you can look into videos on youtube of his singing from his teenage years. They say he still trains several hours daily, and it shows. Check out youtube for his many styles of songs, they are all great. And on another you may enjoy and comment on it this 9 years old Amira who won the Holland got talent in 2013 and learned to sing watching youtube videos. amira willighagen holland's got talent first audition, copy and put in youtube, you will enjoy it even if you do not react to it.

This song comes from the famous Canadian-French rock opera 'Starmania' 1978, well known in French-speaking countries) and is one of the most difficult songs to sing and made Dimash a mega-star overnight.
In 2017 Dimash received a wild-card for the competition “The Singer” in China. He was the youngest participant of all time (22 years) and the first non-Chinese. Only professional, award-winning singers take part. Nobody knew or hear Dimash before and he also had to start first... and after this song Dimash captured the hearts of millions of viewers overnight. The next day, bodyguards stood at his door.
The competition consisted of 14 rounds, over 4 months. The jury consists of 500 spectators. With up to 1 billion people see this tv-program, that's generated international interest. The performances were uploaded to RUclips... and so, we became Dimash’s Dears.
The Chinese organizers planned that Dimash would survive two episodes of the competition and go home again. They didn't really believe in him.
