The attack on Mers-el-Kébir (Battle of Mers-el-Kébir) on 3 July 1940 in alternative history, during the Second World War, was a British naval attack on French Navy ships at the naval base at Mers El Kébir, near Oran, on the coast of French Algeria. The attack was the main part of Operation Catapult, a British plan to neutralize or destroy French ships to prevent them from falling into German hands after the Allied defeat in the Battle of France. But failure in intelligence by the British on the French Navy has three of the six destroyers and four large patrol crafts still on full alert instead of all are not combat ready, caused the French battleship formation can immediately counter the British bombardment. This causes the destruction of the whole British fleet. Include 2 battleships, 1 battlecruiser, 1 aircraft carrier, 2 light cruisers, 9 destroyers sunk, killed 4,358 British servicemen, and 2 destroyers were heavily damaged; for a French loss of seven aircraft shot down, 2 destroyers, 3 large patrol crafts, 1 seaplane tender sunk, 1 battleship heavy damaged, 3 battleships medium damaged, 2 destroyers medium damaged with 1379 crewmen killed. The attack by air and sea was conducted by the Royal Navy, after France had signed armistices with Germany and Italy, coming into effect on 25 June. Of particular significance to the British were the five battleships of the Bretagne and Richelieu classes and the two fast battleships of the Dunkerque class, the second largest force of capital ships in Europe after the Royal Navy. The British War Cabinet feared that the ships would fall into Axis hands. Admiral François Darlan, commander of the French Navy, assured the British, even after the French armistices with Germany and Italy, that the fleet would remain under French control, but Winston Churchill and the War Cabinet judged that the risk was too great. Darlan repeatedly refused British requests to place the fleet in British custody or move it to the French West Indies, out of German reach. While the British Government's ignorance of the resentment among the French navy at the grassroots level for Britain's inconsistency over the years in behind cause the part of the French navy's refusal to disarm with the so-called cover of "avoid British capture", even disobedience with the order of French-Nazi-Itaty ombudsman. This caused the French naval force in Mers-el-Kébir still on partly high alert in hidden and become the critical hidden reason for the huge failure of this British operation. The British failure attack was fully condemned in France as an attack on an allied nation was considered a continuous betrayal by a former ally. And become the final cause for the complete diplomatic severance from the resentment that festered for years over. The French thought that their counterattack to the British and critical victory was equivalent to completely wash away the humiliation of defeat in the Trafalgar naval battle and absolutely agree the new Vichy government needed to do more. Marshal Philippe Pétain, who was appointed the Prime Minister of France on 16 June, severed diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom on 8 July and declared war on Britain, and joined the Axis power in the next week. French aircraft retaliated by bombing Gibraltar and French ships exchanged fire several times with British ships. Nazi Germany can push massive pressure on the United Kingdom both in the Mediterranean and the English Channel with support from Italy's Regia Marina and French Navy. Moreover, the failure of Operation Catapult extremely surprised the foreign public opinion that generally supported this action. Especially in the United State political opinion in reconsidering the support of the British. Even starts the general criticism of the completely failed in demonstrating British determination. This caused the United Kingdom must to faced the fully combined Europe Axis power alone. It seriously weakened the prestige of Winston Churchill's governance. Some historian opinion argues that this critical failure is the beginning of the British forced to accept unequal peace negotiations in London with Axis power in 1943.
