  • Hello pen people!
    In today’s video, I’m talking about my history with drawing and how it helps me process things.
    I discuss a few dark subjects in this video, but I try to talk about them in a way that isn’t triggering. If you feel you need help in the US, here’s a link where you can find it:

    And if you’re outside of the US, try this one:

    If you’re brand new to this channel, my usual videos are about fountain pens, drawing, and drawing with fountain pens. Join us if you’re into it!
    I used this pen (this is the most recent design. I have in the video one from about 10 years ago):

    Filled with this ink:

    Here’s the postcard paper I used:

    And a link to my color palette:

    Well I'm happy that you found a way out of your anxiety/depression while I'm still stuck here.
    Lately I've been trying to put more passion and love into art but nothing seems to work. I'm afraid one day I will reached to the point where art becomes meaningless to me. Yesterday I really tried not to tear up my drawing, it's hard when you're aware of your mental health but still haven't found a solution, in my case it's been 4 years and I'm really tired of it.
    Hope tomorrow will be better 🌞

      I’m so sorry you’re going through that. I hope you find something new that helps. Art is not the only solution… and it’s okay to walk away. I’ve done it so many times in my life. If you’re an artist, you will come back to it in some way. Even if you’re not, that’s okay too. It’s brave of you to write that. I think admitting there’s a problem is an important step. Whatever else needs to be tried… well it’s not a one size fits all solution… so don’t give up. You are more valuable than your art. I don’t know if you have anyone in your life to tell you that, but it’s true.

    I found that after age 50, I just stopped caring about what my brain was telling me about myself and just went with " you just do the best you can and get on with it". Works for me anyway.
    Loved the video and the art, the guitar playing robot is my favorite and I would love to have it in my collection if I am fortunate enough to merit it. Keep up the creative process and hope to see another video soon.

      Thanks for the advice. Maybe when I’m a bit wiser, I’ll stop listening to those voices too. I’ve got to admit, sometimes they tell me important things like “aren’t you supposed to get up for work in 1/2 an hour?” And things like that.

    Hi Stephen, thank you for your openness and honesty…and your beautiful art! (I find it inspiring watching you create). ‘Boarder, busker or baker - I love them all (but the cookies one is making me hungry, so I guess it’d be my first choice). Many thanks for your videos from a fountain pen fan from Canada!

    This was a good and timely video - this time of year is always a particular struggle, I think, for some of us as we get older. Thanks for spending your time in creating these and in sharing your thoughts - I found you through a new fountain pen addiction but I’ve continued to watch for the art. I’d love to be considered in a drawing for the cooking robot postcard. :)

      Yeah, the winter time is usually a rough time for my moods. Worse so around the holidays when I lived so far away from family. Thanks for your kind words. Hoping you are well.

    You don't necessarily have to shut up your brain's internal monolog, you can alternatively just quit listening. I sometimes meditate to the mantra "Shut. Up."

      I sometimes do something similar. I just say out loud or write down the awful thing I’m thinking and then say “yeah, but that’s not real. And it’s kind of stupid.” It helps.

      @stepheninks heck yeah, we empathize because a lot of us are going through similar things. As my Grandma used to say, "Everybody's got something goin on with 'em."

    Hi Stephen! Happy holidays! Thanks for sharing about how your mind works. I never thought about listening to your gut as something that could work against someone, so thanks for giving me a new perspective. I haven't been on RUclips as much but your art is still as lovely as always! I love the shades you use in your watercolors. The robot with cookies speaks to me the most since I'm a bit of a cookie monster but I also love the skateboarding robot.

    I love the robots! As a fellow California native I feel the skateboarding robot suits me best. My brain is only a jerk about specific things. Funnily enough drawing is one of them! I have always struggled with creating art. I have recently been diagnosed with aphantasia, so things are making more sense. Urban sketching/life drawing is pretty much the direction I'm heading in now.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  8 месяцев назад

      I wish I was better at urban drawing. Or more, I wish I didn’t judge myself as much when drawing outdoors. It draws a crowd so easily. Haha.
      I had to look up aphantasia. Now I’m really curious about how creating art plays into that. You could be in a research journal!

    Hi Stephen, thank you for sharing your art and thoughts with us. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate that you show us the different steps in your art process.
    Do you have any advice for someone who really would like to draw but doesn’t know how to start or is struggling with perfectionism.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  8 месяцев назад

      Well, perfectionism is the real killer, isn’t it? I’ll hand you some encouragement and practical advice: First of all, all artists are perfectionists, I don’t really know why… but if you’ve got that tendency, you’ll probably go far. I guess I don’t know how to make that process feel nice though… As far as learning skills, I think you should carve out some regular time for studying (start small, like a 1/2 hour a few times a week, then build up time as you feel comfortable), and then go through a book, RUclips series, or online tutorial from an artist you like. Try to copy what they do. The best information I’ve ever gotten was trying to do exactly what my favorite artist was doing, and then finding out that I couldn’t be them… and that is what sent me in the new direction that became my “style.” Don’t be married to style though. It can (and should?) change a lot over time. I have to mix it up when I’m drawing. Part drawings that are fun/easy for me, and part drawings that stretch and challenge me. You have to be okay with being bad at it though. Sometimes I think that’s the only real difference between an amateur and a professional. For example, I would love to be good at the guitar. But I can’t stand being bad at it… so I never played enough to get better. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I hope it helps.
