Back in my impulse buying days, I bought some painted glass fish from my local pet store. I had a quick chat with the store owner about water parameters and how they'd do in a community tank, and I ended up buying six of them. Outstanding looking little fish, but later I found out their colors aren't a product of selective breeding, but they're literally injected with a dye during a procedure where something like 80% don't even survive. Gave the ones I already bought a good life, but it's a purchase I would never make again.

I'm glad to see this video, because it's real easy to feel like the biggest loser when you make mistakes in this hobby. Things happen to even the absolute BEST fishkeepers. My mistake has been trying to keep German Blue Rams. I'm done with those unless someone can produce a very healthy strain.

I love that you were able to get so many other channels to contribute to this list! I'm subbed to at least a few of them. MD, KGTropicals, etc. My worst fish purchase was for a salt water tank that I had years ago. I purchased a snowflake eel. Didn't take him long to find a way to get himself out of the tank and die on the floor when I wasn't around. I only had a half cover on the tank leaving the back half exposed for east of maintenance of the filter, etc. I had no idea he'd even attempt that. Think I owned him a grand total of 4 days. Also I believe that was my single most expensive individual marine life purchase. lol.

Another great panel of my favorite fish keepers and hearing their fish mistakes!
I wish I'd seen a video like this when I first started in the hobby!!
My biggest mistake was the first time I was in The hobby working in a pet shop and having access to anything I wanted to bring home without being prepared. Too many tanks, too many specialty fish without enough experience and information to know what I was doing.
I feel Taylor's pain when something catches your eye and it's just so cute and pretty"🤣😬 then trying to figure things out after the fact or along the way!!
During that time though, I made an even bigger mistake, I went to the bait shop and in the minnow well was a teeny tiny little baby channel or blue catfish. I fell in love with that little whiskery face and thought it will be a baby for a long time, so I'll take it home and save it from becoming bait 🤣🤣 I added it to my 75 gallon tank, I knew he would get big I just didn't know how fast! It wasn't long before he was laying across most of the bottom of the tank!! Making a mess and eating a lot!!! I did have a bigger 200 gallon goldfish pond in my yard and I thought, well he could live out there until I can release him in a pond my beautiful goldfish. I just hooked him up with an all you can eat buffet!! 😭I So he stayed out there for a while until a blue heron found my pond and I never did see him again!!
I always felt bad about that fish😭🤣 Now coming on to RUclips and seeing the monster fish keepers like OFR taking care of these guys!! It was definitely something I didn't even think about and thinking through!! 🙏
I also felt what Joey was saying about acceptance wanting to fit in and taking on things that I might not be ready for or don't even need to have in the first place!! As they say need to learn to crawl before you can walk!! I sure do appreciate and want to thank all the wonderful panel members for sharing their mistakes so we don't have to make the same ones! Have a blessed day everyone!!🙏🥰🌿🐟🌿💚

Mistake was listening to my local fish store and getting south American cichlids and African cichlids for the same tank. The African cichlids we're nipping the fins of the SA, eventually returned the AC to the LFS and the SA cichlids got ich shortly after. This was all over the course of the last 4 weeks

The Biz traumatized himself.... lol Great video, it's awesome to hear the mistakes that others make. It helps us to think before we do. My biggest mistake was my betta sorority. It was gorgeous and peaceful and so much fun to watch. Then one day the queen of the tank passed away and all hell broke out in that tank. It was a literal blood bath over night. In one night they wiped out the 6 danio's that we had as dithers. Two of the girls died that night and the rest were separated, two were rehomed.

The fish I most regret getting is mollies. I had them early on in my fish keeping hobby. They seem innocuous but I was very distressed by the male non-stop harassing the female and I started with 2 and ended up taking 50 back to the LFS. That was not enjoyable. Like MD, I learned to read up and learn about the fish’s behavior before making future selections. I’ve never again made a fish impulse purchase. I usually come up with the idea and dream about it for months or years ahead of time. Completely obsessing over it before I buy. This hobby is never ending with the amount of learning to be obtained.

my mistake was being a helicopter fishkeeper and doing too many water changes on my first tank. whenever i saw a little bit of nitrates i would do large water changes every 2 or 3 days. it stressed my first betta and caused him to have clamped fins and tail biting and he was very stressed. my lfs told me how to treat him and to stick to weekly water changes and he is now doing well and thriving. he still tail bites tho.

Great video. It´s good to know that we all do mistakes. Mine was to buy a Gibbiceps pleco that my son wanted. Into a Discus tank... It took a while to find a new owner and by that time my son had already got him a name and he was family. And he was big. All the food I put into the tank he just ate it all. I think this is what´s called a family crisis...

One of the worst mistakes I made was doing regular 50+% water changes weekly, with heavy gravel vacuuming AND filter rinsing. Crashed the crap out if my cycle and lost all my Amano shrimp to molting issues because of it. It was heartbreaking and I even had to euthanize a couple which was traumatic lol. I felt so guilty for so long.

My biggest mistake was in Cosmo's tank setup. A decoration trapped water inside and when I moved and put everything in a bucket, bacteria must have gotten in there. He died just a few days after having symptoms even tho I did several water changes and used salt and meds. Always make sure you set it up so water won't be trapped anywhere.

Biggest mistake was also accepting a pair of blood parrots, I say accepting because they were donated and I had no clue how those fish would be and they were the worst!! Bullying every other fish I had, like the guy said ALWAYS wanted to breed which would make them very very aggressive, I would reach in to move things around and they would just attack my hand! And let’s not forget the mess they would make in the tank, piles of sand on each corner, plants floating around in the water because they would pull them out! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

i would say my biggest fish mistake was getting a tangerine lobster. i saw one at petco that i had been eyeing for about a week and so one day i went in and i scooped this little guy up. he was a cool little lobster i made him a little cave to call his own but within 1 day and a half he was dead. i have no idea why i fed him some sinking pellets and stuff but he still died. i took him back and the clerk was like yea these are really sensitive and stress easily. they had another one that died within a week too. havent had a lobster since, so lesson learned was to do the research before diving into a new creature.

hey i have a 29 gallon with 8 red eye tetras and 5 glofish tetra 1 high fin tetra and 1 clown pleco 1 dwarf frog and a glofish shark with 3 nerites snail. i like this set up more than what i had before because i had some barbs but i just want to know what you think if there is anything else i can do?? like add some more glo tetras because i know their a schooling fish but your opinion would be helpful and thanks for everything you do.

That might be hitting the limit right now. I’m not sure if the glo sharks get as aggressive as the regular ones, but they can get super aggressive as they get larger - maybe just keep an eye on it?

My worst mistake ever was putting a pictus catfish in a community tank of very peaceful fish. He was beautiful but he killed every fish in that tank before I could catch him in the act!

LRB! Had the same issue with a golden algae eater. He was an a#@ to all my other fish! He was beautiful but at about 4" he started harassing my community fish in my 65gl so bad I was going to move him to a 20gal so I could re home him and unfortunately he was damaged in the move due to inexperience in catching superfast fish. Never again even now.

You’ll laugh, but my biggest mistake was buenas aries tetras. I put them in with my congo tetras and they destroyed their beautiful fins. The ba’s were so aggressive all my congos were soon dead from the constant aggression. Lesson learned! Just because it’s a tetra doesn’t mean it’s a fit your community tank.

My biggest mistake was buying 2 paradise gouramis and puting them in a 20 gal. They fought to the death over night. The survivor lost its tail and it never grew back. 2 years later I still have him and is naed tailess.

Lol I got a 125 gallon today and I don’t want to make a mistake.. I have approximately 1-2 feet from the dirt to the joists. What would you recommend using between the joists and dirt? I was thinking either bricks or jacks.

My biggest mistake was years ago.. I had an african cichlid tank that was actually pretty stable. I even had some fry that one pair was keeping and agression was under control. I was at the fish store and they had an "unknown" cichlid for a very low price. I bought it, put it in my tank. When it matured (it was brown as a fry), it turned out to be a red devil and killed everything in the tank.

Why stores even sell those fish is beyond me. I had one at one point too a long time ago because the dude at the store told me it would grow to the size of the tank.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics , this was 1998 before much was known about them I assume. I was told they were vicious predators and at the store they were. Once they got into my care the only thing they were vicious on was Brussels sprouts. Turns out they were starving at the store. I can totally see that they would attack people in New Zealand when they didn't have a lot of food available.

Jason, Can I tap your expertise? Platy, grew a large brown pimple near the back fin, same color as him. Pimple on both sides. Never in 30 years with platies have I ever seen them grow a pimple like this. Platy shows no signs of any distress. He is healthy, eats well, active male. Any idea what this could be? Water chemistry fine. I can send you a pic if you can tell where to send it. I tried to research, nothing. I'm stumped. Bob
