I know this is controversial but I think the best beginner fish is the fish you love. Nobody should be stuck with a fish they don't like too much because that's the beginner fish they were recommended. If a fish is loved then hopefully they have a better chance with an owner that will buy the bigger tank and spend loads of time doing their research and the fish will live it's whole life with one owner who cares for it daily. Tons of research and learning is required for any fish, so go the extra mile for the fish you REALLY want.

I started with African Cichlids, and I’m so glad that I did. It was definitely a steep learning curve, and PLENTY of mistakes were made, but it forced me to learn quicklu, try new things to find what works, and really grew my enthusiasm for the hobby. Cichlid personalities are all different, and so rewarding to take care of. Personal opinion here, but I feel like I wouldn’t have the same enthusiasm for the hobby if I started with a molly, guppy, platty or betas. I am surprised that nobody mentioned goldfish. They are historically a very popular beginner fish.

I really want to shout out 16:15 Looking at my water parameters/conditions from the tap really helped me decide what fish to get. I didn't look at this at all the first time around and I'm so glad I did this time. Finding a fish that is happy with my water conditions and starting to get into plants (even with just pebble - intert substrate) really made me successful this time.

I was a little surprised that no one said Danios. They are 1) very hard, 2) very active, 3) are great tankmates with almost any other fish, 4) easy to breed, 5) low maintenance, 6) live a fairly decent amount of time.
    Where i disagree:
Betta - most people want more than one fish and as a community fish it's a hit or miss. I have one Betta that is calm with its tankmates and another that bullies from time to time.
Guppies - although guppies are beautiful, they have a short life span. Nothing turns people away from the hobby more than fish dying.
Platies - in my experience I've have had several platies die on me without knowing why, so I personally can't recommend them as beginner fish.
    Other good options:
Mollies/Swordtails - are good options being that they look similar in shape to the popular goldfish w/o the mess. They also grow to a decent size and don't need to large a tank. If you get mollies I recommend getting colorful ones.
Tetras - for small tanks, neon Tetras is a good option. For slightly larger tanks I prefer the Cardinal Tetras being that they're more colorful.

My favorites are bettas, I agree with my friend Lisa ♥️.... but that is not without research on having a proper tank for them. Another easily available fish that can go with your Betta are albino corydoras!! Those two fish are why I'm here in the fish fam today!! This is probably my favorite combinations ever!!

First and first to breed by complete accident was the dalmatian Molly when I was 10 years old. My favorite beginner fish would be the bronze cory which led me to get 4 more different types of corydoras (all seperate tanks). Easiest to breed would be super red bristlenose plecos. I have 2 55s and a 110 stock tank dedicated to them.

  • @TheOfficialSteelReign

I know this isn't quite in the spirit of what you're asking, but I think the best beginner fish is the fish that grabbed your attention in the first place. Whether they're hard or easy, unless you simply can't provide the water quality or volume the fish you want requires, do your research on the fish that pulled you towards the hobby, research the parameters you're going to be able to provide within your home, and then just go for it. If you love oscars, don't go getting guppies or (*insert another "easy" species here) and then be saddled with them for who know how long.

My favorite beginner fish is the Harlequin Rasbora, keept in groups of at least 6. Incredibly hardy, practically immortal, in my experience 😉Plus, you can keep them in small tanks, like a beginner is most likely to have at first. A second best for me would be, the Cichlasoma Nigrofasciatum, for a larger tank, keept alone or with a mate, nothing like experience for the first time a "water doggie", a highly personable fish that will interact with you. 🙂

If I were just starting out, I would look at all the fish recommended, pick the one I like best, and then research that fish to make sure I have the right size aquarium and the right kind of water. Best advice I've heard over and over on RUclips is...don't fight your water. I think that's really important when you're first starting out.

When I came back to this hobby I wanted to start out slow to see if it would hold my interest before I bought my dream fish. As my dream fish can live for 10 plus years. I found so much support from many of these channels. I now understand the process and I waited a year before getting my dream fish which is the blood parrots, which I have had for over a year now. I no longer fear the hobby, I've had my dream fish for over a year and I am planning new tanks all the time! Many of the faces on this video have helped me along the way. PrimeTime has been my main go to channel for all things fish. When I can't figure something out I hit a live stream and ask questions and boom, answers. So much easier than it was 20 years ago. I absolutely love the community that surrounds this hobby. Thank you all for making this hobby easier for everyone!

If I were picking on a fish purely on their ability to withstand even the worst of water conditions it would be the Convict Cichlid. And they're pretty fun to watch as well and will definitely breed if you mix any number of males and females. They aren't rare or highly sought after so you can find them really inexpensively. Only downside is that they grow larger than you standard guppy, molly, platy, etc. so they'd need a larger tank, 30gal, etc. for just a few of them. If smaller tank is what you're going for then certainly the livebearers, Molly, Platy, Guppy, and even a single male betta mixed in there as well. Again any of these fish should be really inexpensive and available at almost any store that sells aquarium fish.

Team Platy all the way! They're colorful, peaceful, engaging, and basically bulletproof. Bonus: they breed easily, but not as quickly as other livebearers (in my experience), so you don't run into the population explosion you get with guppies.
I guess I'm the only one who can't seem to keep Bettas alive; maybe it's my super hard/high pH water? I have great luck with rainbows, livebearers, and dwarf cichlids.

XD I do NOT recommend Rummynoses foi beginners., though They can shock out and die just from being chased with a net. If you do choose them, keep an eye on their noses; if the red isn't vibrant, something's upsetting or hurting them.

Sometimes the easy fish are the best. why ? less hassle / more enjoyment. minnows are the top of my list for sure , I love them.

My first was a betta and I don't think it would've been a good beginner. Unless you want to learn a lot about fish diseases and treatments.
My second go will likely be platys.
I think a couple of things that need to be considered are budget and temperature. If the tank is in a cooler room, it can get expensive to heat it for a betta.
Plus if you don't want to buy all sorts of food, keep fish food in the freezer, then considering diet and how far are you willing to go would be important.
One reason I like platys is that some of them can handle cooler temps. I know White Clouds can too. But platys just look better.

I've decided to not get Betta fish for the time being. My beginning fish are tetra's, mollies, Swordtails, Cherry barbs, Harlequin Raspora's. Anything in this area are great. My favorite beginner fish is. ..
I honestly can't say because I feel like such a beginner myself. However I think any fish,no matter how Hardy in theory could fall victim to a fish keepers neglect at any stage in their life. let me explain what my first month of" beginners" fish keeping was like:
I nearly lost my baby Betta within the first 3 days (swim bladder disease from Petco)I had to crash course in that. 4days later after that I adopted female sword tail who dropped babies 2 weeks later, another crash course.
Then a week later came my rescue group and oh boy! Crash coursing on taking care of blood parrots, Tex cichlids firemouth and a common pleco in a uncycled 125 gallon tank. Half were sick /injured and two are deformed. I literally have slept along side the tank on a chair .stayed under the tank to monitor them ( no sand at that point). Fallen asleep with my head on their tank. Stayed up for days straight with no rest with their sicknesses.
    🧠💭😱🤯🤯😱😬
That was my First month of my Fishkeeping. I would not recommend any of those scenarios as a beginner fish keeping circumstance but I reached out for assistance.try 2 be prepared for everything and anything. Use every educational resource possible. There is so much material to learn from now!Learn, pay attention, listen to Everything,React quickly if you notice something.I could never have made it through all of this without A LOT of HELP 🆘!
Without all the help of the RUclips Fish Keeping Community My dream of even being at the level I'm at right now would not have been possible. I could not be more grateful to those who have helped me and I in turn desire someday to assist others.
PS: my Brain 🧠 hurts⚡⚡🔥 from all this Crash coursing 😂.I admit it

Rosy Barbs are colourful, super active will eat anything and are peaceful in a community tank. Also, in the event of a nuclear holocaust the only thing left will be cockroaches and Rosies.

can't believe nobody said harlequin rasbora
-- brilliant looking orange body with a cool black pattern
    -- lovely schooling behavior
-- practically bulletproof in terms of resistance to disease
-- plant safe, shrimp safe, snail safe
-- totally peaceful so that you can add in a few tank mates like a gourami later on
perfect fish for any fishkeeper actually, not just beginners

Perhaps the fish isn't the problem I'd suggest your filters, heaters, food be the factors to success I've bred discus, rams catfish, anglefish. I've tend to spend money on bigger filters heaters that can heat the tank to the low 90's ,thats incase i go back to discus heater only piece of equipment that should be recommended size. I currently have a 10-20 hang on filter aided by a cascade cascade 1000 with a sponge filter in my 26 gallon can handle slight overstocking. My food of choice bug bites and ocean nutrition, yeah i feed fresh fish ocean fish food and they love it and thrive.

My absolute favorite- the original Blue Acara Cichlids (not the Electrics), but they're rare to see in any pet stores in my area (Cincinnati). It may be that the young are considered plain and unattractive, but just wait until puberty hits for them. Their Latin name doesn't mean "pretty" for nothing. Tolerant of water conditions, easy to breed, generally not too agressive (for a Cichlid), and they don't grow to the size of your shoe, they deserve to be seen more often.

I guess if you are talking about beginner people who are likely to watch this type of video a lot of the suggestions would work. However when you are dealing with completely inexperienced people it is super hard to convince them to even get a 10gallon tank let alone the 40 or larger needed for some of these fish.

This may be a silly question, I'm new to the hobby...but are these suggestions assuming that a tank has been cycled properly and ready to have fish? Or are these for buying a tank and fish on the same day type of thing? Thanks!

Betta fish need some experience but definitely not beginner as beginners tend to feed excessively and betta have a very small belly, leading him to die, due to constipation. Plus if he goes through fin rot, a beginner is completely confused, not knowing what to do. Also betta's fins get nipped by schooling small fishes, generally kept by beginners. Please stop recommending betta as beginner and help save some lives. John is bullseye, with the Angelfish. Neon tetras also help the beginners to settle down.

Any fish can be a beginner fish. People just need to do their research and care for their tanks. I started with a Tanganyikan tank and never had a problem (or killed a fish!).

I disagree with Mollies for beginners as they can sometimes have difficulties transitioning to freshwater after being (most times) raised in brakish water and new beginners might not know how to deal with it or help their fish when they get fungus or bacterial infections.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  Год назад

That can certainly happen with store-bought mollies, but if you can get them from a local breeder that problem goes away!

Everybody keeps saying how great and easy are betta fish, well,I love them but they keep dying on me, today I lost the last one, I have 10 gal tanks, filters, hidies, heaters, great quality variety of food, weekly water changes, catappa leaves and they keep getting sick and dying, dropsy, rotten fin. I never use a tank or the accessories after it housed a sick fish, so please someone with knowledge tell me what I'm doing wrong, and what can I do because they're my favorite and beloved type of fish but today I got so sad and frustrated that I don't want to get another one, assuming he's going to die 😢💔
