One cool feature of the Raspberry Pi is that it supports HDMI-CEC. This allows you to control your pi over HDMI with your TV remote if your TV supports HDMI-CEC.
Also, with XBMC running on the Pi, if you power down the TV and don't have the option disabled to turn the Pi off as well, there's no way to "wake" the Pi back up later, aside from unplugging power and reconnecting. There's no suspend power with the Pi and XBMC. If it's off, it's REALLY off. Only a power cycle will wake it back up.
If your TV can power the Pi via its USB and when the TV is off you see no lights on the Pi, then you might be in luck. Theoretically, when you turn the TV back on, it should power the Pi again. Not all TVs offer power via USB, only data transfer.
ricksite my tv does the same when tv power off so does the pi but i always thought it was bad because when i turn it back on it said a message saying that i had to power off in the left hand corner
I wasn't aware of this until today when I tried to use Netflix on my raspberry pi with the default raspbian installation. The instructions here DO WORK, I just got mine working perfectly, thank you!
I also torrent the ISOs because torrents are simply better than web downloads from Microsoft. I still need to enter the key to have a fully functional installation (and I have bought said key) Kind of a waste though since I haven't booted into Windows for months.
Last time I checked, Raspberry Pi cannot play netflix by itself. you can pay for PlayOn TV app to stream from another computer to the RPi. Not practical solution; you need a spare computer, and pay 5$/month for the app. If you know something else, please let me know. I may be missing something here is the link for PlayOn tv with more details: www.wirelesshack.org/using-kodi-to-watch-netflix-hulu-amazon-prime-instant-video.html
+Julio Dusablon there is no version of Chrome for the ARM, which Raspberry Pi uses. you can do that with Kodi installed on Windows, but NOT Raspberry Pi. I really wish I'm wrong.
***** Yeah.. I agree with you.. but I don't think so that he did that.. and I don't thnk that he also paid for the start wars and the legend of korra1 ;)
Kostas Kagioulis who the fuck cares where he gets his stuff from most of the stuff on your pc is probably pirate too and so is most of of the people on you tube too
I love OpenELEC! I've been using it for the past 6 months. I boot from USB on an old netbook and it works great. The OS is only 100 MB which is ridiculously small. One thing I'll say about XBMC is OneChannel is the only add-on needed. With my Raspberry Pi, I've only tried the RetroPi video game emulation.
I was thinking of doing a cool project or 2 with one of these. One would be to connect to a ghetto blaster and put a LCD screen where the cassette decks were. The second was to turn my bookshelf stereo into a full media center with an external tv or monitor.Would be cool to create a backplate that actually can be an intermediate connection between the case of the unit
I've been using RaspBMC for over a year now & it's great. I use it for playing all my DVD films & TV shows I've ripped to a NAS & it works really well most of the time. I've used it for RUclips but didn't know there was a way of getting Netflix on it. Although the fee means I probably won't bother as I have other devices that can access it anyway.
I spent about 5 hours trying to set up my raspberry pi to play movies from my external hard drive onto my flat screen tv. I got so frustrated I was about to trash the raspberry. It got so complicated that I had to manually enter the hard drive particulars into the OS. I thought the Raspberry was total garbage. Then I happened across your youtube video and in about 10 minutes I had exactly what I needed. Thanks for your post. Now instead of trashing the Raspberry I will by another one for the other room.
The Pi is the best PVR money can buy. I have one for this job 100%. It uses so little juice, I don't turn it off. Need another Pi for my SDR server now.
Is this show still around? I've been watching Patrick Norton since the days of the OG Screen Savers. It would be great if Tek Thing incorporated more projects like this. Thanks for all the content over the years Mr. Norton
You guys are actually good youtubers, im glad i found this channel. Hopefully your channel gains more subs so you can expand and stuff... I suggest partnering up with other tech youtubers so more people more about this channel
LOL I'm quite certain that they appreciate the platitudes, yet will do quite fine with their amassed experience in the consortium of shows that this group share and co-host with one another, to survive without the unsolicited advice. But hey man, I appreciated it (your posted comment). It gave me a wonderful chuckle. :-D
very informative and just what i was looking for to get a good start on this project. as this video is a bit dated, is there an updated script with newer options for parts and plug in software? Also, any videos on the topic of robotics? trying to do something along the lines of the Lego Mindstorm concept.
+Edwardo “Edo” Loza go look at the official pi forums and elsewhere. I'd look into kodi maybe. And you can view Magpi magazine free online (pdf downloads). That should give you some good leads on what to look into for robots. There are all sorts of kits for pi from the various maker sites and so on, and lots of guides/help topics on forums to look at for some guidance. :)
It's not officially supported by Playon, but it should work fine if the playon server is connected through a proxy/VPN. We haven't tested it out though :/ -Michael
DIY Tryin hey Michael i have a raspberry pie that i bought and never used since i dont have a media collection and dont want to pay for playon, can you please share some more cool ideas for stuff to do with a raspberry pie such as this :)
+Lamb How did you get netflix working on raspi?? I've installed the addon from SuperRepo, configured but nothing. Thought it's not working anymore on ARM devices with Linux...
Can you guys please do a video on setting up a file server and other kinds of servers and ssh on a linux box? Preferably manjaro, but the distro is up to you. Thanks! By the way I am loving the more computer/tech related videos you guys are focusing on. Keep 'em coming!
Hmm... I wonder if there is a way to create a DVR using the Raspberry Pi and a network tv tuner like HD Homerun? Maybe an Aereo like service if it can be streamed online?
I would like to add that one of my favorite caveats to using Yatse remote on an Android device is that it adds an addition "share to" option on your device(s). So, if you have a picture or video on your Android device that you would like to show on your TV or projector, simply select the "share" icon, then select "Send to XBMC". Within a couple of seconds, you will see your pic or video playing on your TV via the XBMC. This also works with RUclips and many other video sources that allow for sharing. Also, with Yatse, you can control multiple XBMC machines. I currently have two RPi Model Bs running OpenElec and I can go into "Manage" in Yatse and select which device I want to actively control.
In my personal opinion the speed of the SD Card makes a drastic difference. With a class 4 or 6 you will see lag when switching through menus even with a USB you get lag. I have a Sandisk 45Mb/s class 10. Absolutely no lag even after scrapping over 3,000 tv shows and 1,000 movies most in 1080p. Also use NFS to share the files it's faster and doesn't drop the connection like SMB.
5:13 That sigh after the emphasis on free. As if it weren't bad enough already with intentionally using a folder containing "free" stuff. I almost feel bad for Patrick.. He was co-host on the screen savers, when this kid was messing his huggies.
Same issue, I have XBMC on my Boxee Box, and the lack of Netflix sucks. I can either switch back to native Boxee, and skip XBMC, or just load up Netflix via my Panasonic SmartTV that the Boxee Box is plugged in to. I normally do the latter, means I can skip a reboot of my Boxee Box to get out of XBMC, and instead just load up the "smart" functions of my TV. The PlayOn stuff looks horrible imho.
patrick norton Best of luck to you Patrick! By the way I'm the guy from Diablo Cantino TWIT/TekZilla party a couple CES' ago, that you were arguing with that the Sanyo prototype 8K television is not better than real live - I only made that comment jokingly, but you took offense to it :(
hello guys, awesome video ty! i want to use raspberry to multimidia station/network backup... can i share the hd connected on raspberry on the network? usimg xbmc distribution? ty
I noticed HDHomeRun Plus as an input on one of the screens. Do you have a tutorial on how to set that up? I have one on a separate subnet on a Windows PC now. If you have a tutorial of some sort on how to define the IP's and DNS servers, I would enjoy seeing it. Thanks, I enjoy your stuff.
justin andrews ya thks I found out shortly after. Also found out the pi is a total POS that needs A LOT more money than $35 just to get running the way u want it to. Might as well get a android stick or roku
Sprits Fal look at the new one. $35 with a quad core and 1gb ram. It only needs a WiFi dongle, keyboard and mouse which 90% of PC users have any way and you have a fully functional desktop for $35
The Short Nerd Doesn't the Pi need more things that u normally wouldn't have such as the power adapter and 3v to 5v converter card, little things like that? Plus the only OS that would run on it is a Pi OS of some sort like the XBMC. Idk, it just seems better to pay around $50 for a android stick also with a quad core(a better one usually) and 4g of ram with onboard storage and chance for expansion....etc. The Pi just DOESN'T seem worth it to me with what it provides.
Sprits Fal Wrong about the power adapter. Use any android one and it will work. Wrong about the OS. It wins windows 10 and all linux distros without lagg.
+the gaming guy tom yes, create a windows / samba mount to your NAS. That's the only way subtitles files will follow. Otherwise uPNP will work, but no subs as separate files then.
Great vid but disappointed you didn't show off XBMC's greatest feature; Movie and TV Show scraping. You mentioned that the interface was not that great but once items are in the 'library', they look great. OpenELEC is supports CeC so if you picked up the TV remote, you should have been able to control XBMC with that without any configuration. Very wife and child friendly. Keep up the great work.
Hey! Great video! You guys always do great stuff. Love the vid about the bathroom website. Anyway, I have a project suggestion that I'd love to see and I think would be cool. Project: A Faux Aquarium(Fish Tank) from an Old Screen with Raspberry Pi Extra Credit: Use the aquarium footage as an overlay on a camera video feed to give the illusion of being able to see through the fish tank Cheers! Keep up the great work!
Always a clever idea to make a show where you show a Download folder that has a "Windows 7 Untouched ISO etc" on it. I cannot see how this could become an issue.
This is all well and good, but if I want to access my home stuff and Netflix, wouldn't it be cheaper to just get a Roku 3 and install Plex or something?
Miles Peterson If you got the money go ahead, if you got the money but want to know you did it, not someone else. Go ahead. :) I have a Roku 3 myself and its very smooth.
Hey how did you get netflix working on raspi?? I've installed the addon from SuperRepo, configured but nothing. Thought it's not working anymore on ARM devices with Linux...
You will see the error when you attempt to play the netflix video. After this you simply purchase the mpeg2 codec input it and that will solve the issue. Please note that the codec is specific to your device so you will need your 16 digit serial number. You can get this via ssh to the box. wiki.openelec.tv/index.php/Raspberry_Pi_Codec_Licences#Obtain_your_Raspberry_Pi.27s_serial_number Default user:root pass:openelec
Chris Morgan oh fun. I did use notepad and not this Notepad++ bet that'll be fun to fix. woulda done it on xubuntu but was having so much fun I skipped it (face palm)
yup, but get the raspberry pi 3 model b, but for it to work you need to set it up for moonlighting and have a GeForce video card that supports streaming, like the GeForce 900 series and have GeForce experience installed also. There are guides on youtube for this.
adding media is super easy.. too bad openelec isnt going to sort and categorize anything correctly unless you have a specific folder setup. if you have a big collection than good luck converting... BUT using it like they showed does work reasonably well
im thinking of getting a Raspberry Pi B+ and i was going to install Raspbian, would i be able to go on websites like: youtube, netflix and other websites?... or do i have to somehow download java or stuff along those lines..... and finally if you have to pay for netflix on the pi couldnt i just use netflix website instead to work around the cost
Having a browser app will allow you to watch Netflix, RUclips, etc from the browser. However, most persons like myself use the Rasp Pi B+ as an entertainment system. So I have it configured to run OpenElec, once it boots it goes straight to the good stuff no clicking on an icon, etc. I have my Pi mounted in a corner and control it with a remote. No keyboard, mouse. To setup like this you will need the decoder. If you already have a Netflix account then it will work you may however need to get the playon application.
this is the problem, i want something tiny i can move around the house or to friends houses to browse the internet as i cant be moving my desktop all the time as theres just so many wires to set up, then i saw this and thought it was golden because of the such low price and size, but theres nothing out there to tell me i can watch video's online without having to add such software like java ETC and theres also nothing out there telling me if i can get it with the standard software and just watch netflix without playon because i dont want to have to fork out another lump of money just to watch tv when i could get a chrome caster but the downside to that is i would need to use my desktop aswell just wont have to move it
Hey I have a question here I've been searching up for this and I haven't found it at all I am trying to add leds onto my raspberry pi 3 tx/rx for network hdd and power How can I use the pins for that
I have a Sharp Aquos TV (japanese) and the TV's remote somehow controls the Pi. I didn't do anything to make that happen - though I do have that setting enabled as well - allow other apps to control xbmc. On my little TV though, it doesn't work. So... I guess it's just something in the TV that has that function/support. Super cool though.
+DIY Tryin Hi guys, I'm new to the Raspberry Pi scene, have a B+, curious, what is the compression when streaming media this way from any type of local device (in the network, on a flash drive, or otherwise) to an HDTV through HDMI ? Do you get a full HD output from the Pi to the screen ? Also, as a bonus query, is the picture rendered as Progressive or Interlaced ? YOu can probably not watch a full HD .avi or .mkv file and get comparable results from the Pi as from direct connection to the TV ?
I wonder how difficult it would be to build a laptop sized touchscreen that connects to your home network via bluetooth and is waterproof so you can keep it in the bathroom.
One cool feature of the Raspberry Pi is that it supports HDMI-CEC. This allows you to control your pi over HDMI with your TV remote if your TV supports HDMI-CEC.
Yeah! One thing to note is that HDMI-CEC can definitely be flaky depending on your HDTV manufacturer.
When I was playing around with it, I powered it off my TV (modern Samsung). When I shut the TV off, the Pi was powered down.
If your TV can power the Pi via its USB and when the TV is off you see no lights on the Pi, then you might be in luck. Theoretically, when you turn the TV back on, it should power the Pi again. Not all TVs offer power via USB, only data transfer.

Fake Tom Cruise
misleading title, waste of time for me. Practically, Netflix wouldn't work on Raspberry Pi!!

The Pi is the best PVR money can buy. I have one for this job 100%. It uses so little juice, I don't turn it off.
Need another Pi for my SDR server now.
*head explodes* suddenly tinkering sounds interesting again for me. Just learned about the pi can't wait to take a byte :)
you should do more things with the rasberry pi like mabe build your own arcade cabinet? hmmm
Is this show still around? I've been watching Patrick Norton since the days of the OG Screen Savers. It would be great if Tek Thing incorporated more projects like this. Thanks for all the content over the years Mr. Norton
woohoo I have been wanting something like this for ages. Love your projects
Better than using a smartphone as a controller is controlling the RPi via CEC using the TV's remote control ;)
FYI The Kodi Team has their own official app on Google Play (and I believe the App Store as well) that integrates with Kodi very well.
I think you folks should lose the static-ie video transitons. It's like someone who just discovered the screeching tire sound effects on PowerPoint.
You guys are actually good youtubers, im glad i found this channel. Hopefully your channel gains more subs so you can expand and stuff... I suggest partnering up with other tech youtubers so more people more about this channel

But hey man, I appreciated it (your posted comment). It gave me a wonderful chuckle.
:-D
Holy shit patrick norton!
How about the thumbnails that i have in my movie folders? Will they show up nicely like with media center on windows?????
By default I think PlayOn is SD, but there is an HD extension now that should display better...at least if you want Netflix on a Linux machine.
I'd love to see a long episode on XBMC! Keep up the great work DIY crew!

LOL!! You can control the weather!!
Nice video btw, thanks a lot
Nice video. Love your jolly roger btw.
wow a streaming service to stream streaming services wow
Great video guys. I'm convinced to try Raspberry Pi. So, it will work with my DLNA, correct?
Holy shit, Patrick Norton! Havent seen you since the good ole screensavers days on techtv!!!
Can you guys make a complete home media server video with a home server (freenas)? As in how to make the rasberri pi work with the server.
Hellsing Ultimate AND Baccano?
Nice taste

its basically the same thing

Can you guys do an update with the pi2 and Xbian please.
The pi doesn't have any wifi services correct? So the media needs to be connected directly to the pi to get it?
you can use a wifi-doggle
justin andrews ya thks I found out shortly after. Also found out the pi is a total POS that needs A LOT more money than $35 just to get running the way u want it to. Might as well get a android stick or roku

Wrong about the OS. It wins windows 10 and all linux distros without lagg.
Plex would be a good free alternative tho right?
If you have an ipad/iphone you could use the Netflix app on that and then airplay to Kodi/XBMC.
Its probably much smoother on a raspberry pi 2, Can the same software be used to install it onto the newer hardware?
4:18 hmm someone watches Baccano and Hellsing Ultimate, that alone makes your channel 50% cooler in my opinion
Time for a 2020 update!

Cher guys
can u hook up a external hard drive to watch movies from pi to a tv
Can you control pi with the smartphone app if you are NOT on a network? Like in the woods with no router. No, right?
Baccano and Hellsing, really good anime right there.
Always a clever idea to make a show where you show a Download folder that has a "Windows 7 Untouched ISO etc" on it. I cannot see how this could become an issue.
That flickering is really annoying.
I find it strange only last week I picked up the pi and repurposed it as a htpc.
Something great going on pi
Does xbmc limit the size of the external hard drive you can connect to play media? I have a 5tb desktop hard drive with its own power source.
+Pete Keller I don't believe xbmc/Kodi cares about the size of the external media source, whether it's an external drive, a network share, etc.
This is all well and good, but if I want to access my home stuff and Netflix, wouldn't it be cheaper to just get a Roku 3 and install Plex or something?
Maybe not cheaper, but I imagine it would be less of a hastle.

Ok, sorry, I've not understood about PlayOn service... -.-
do wonder , on the stock OS it's fairly easy to run into the mpeg2 message. On this haven't run into it yet. Where do you get the message on openelec?
You will see the error when you attempt to play the netflix video. After this you simply purchase the mpeg2 codec input it and that will solve the issue. Please note that the codec is specific to your device so you will need your 16 digit serial number. You can get this via ssh to the box. wiki.openelec.tv/index.php/Raspberry_Pi_Codec_Licences#Obtain_your_Raspberry_Pi.27s_serial_number

can you do steam in home streaming?
its a mini computer, sure it might work... but, enjoy the 3-5fps you're going to get.
yup, but get the raspberry pi 3 model b, but for it to work you need to set it up for moonlighting and have a GeForce video card that supports streaming, like the GeForce 900 series and have GeForce experience installed also. There are guides on youtube for this.
The flickering transitions in this bugged the crap out of me. Please use normal transitions that wont give the audience a headache. Thanks.
Any suggestions for just a RaspPi 2 home server? I don't need the GUI; I just want a home media server with drives I can mount to Win8.1. :D Thanks!!!
They didnt talk about other options thar make it even more awesome. Ability to stream youtube, vimeo, sports, news, cooking, music, and alot more.
lol, Baccano and Hellsing, nice!
We need an update :) AKA osmc
Plex + roku does this same thing without the headache of trying to get Xbmc working right.
The playon method works, for Amazon, Netflix, and ANYTHING Playon supports. Seriously
Hellsing and baccono! Nice choice 😺
I used to watch you on "The Screen Savers".
Would you be able to add a browser to the RP and watch Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime through there?
Media server... how would I connect to it from let's say other computer or smart tvs?
adding media is super easy.. too bad openelec isnt going to sort and categorize anything correctly unless you have a specific folder setup. if you have a big collection than good luck converting...
If you already have a Netflix account then it will work you may however need to get the playon application.
this is the problem, i want something tiny i can move around the house or to friends houses to browse the internet as i cant be moving my desktop all the time as theres just so many wires to set up, then i saw this and thought it was golden because of the such low price and size, but theres nothing out there to tell me i can watch video's online without having to add such software like java ETC and theres also nothing out there telling me if i can get it with the standard software and just watch netflix without playon because i dont want to have to fork out another lump of money just to watch tv when i could get a chrome caster but the downside to that is i would need to use my desktop aswell just wont have to move it
So do you need a "Server" power up to running the netflix on the raspy 2? not cool
Hey I have a question here I've been searching up for this and I haven't found it at all I am trying to add leds onto my raspberry pi 3 tx/rx for network hdd and power How can I use the pins for that
Baccano!/10
Michael confirmed for good tastes
Will it work with music from iTunes
is berry boot only for windows because I run a mac
YOu can probably not watch a full HD .avi or .mkv file and get comparable results from the Pi as from direct connection to the TV ?
baccano is pretty lit
raspberry will happly acept the tv controller as input
would this be able to handle steam in home streaming?
I wonder how difficult it would be to build a laptop sized touchscreen that connects to your home network via bluetooth and is waterproof so you can keep it in the bathroom.
Can we watch TV channels from our country? Like can it be possible to transfer TV box signal from RCA cables to hdmi?
I may do this to replace my old and crusty HTPC I built a long time ago. Would be nice to reclaim that 30gb SSD in it.
