- Just a quick video made on my phone to show how to fix a gearbox fault warning on a Rangerover Evoque. I found the answer online and thought some video might make it even easier! It is the auxillary battery that needs to be changed and it is rather smaller than you might think. It is also cheap online. I think it was also causing some of the cameras to give a blue screen every so often.
Thank you so much! Literally saved me £££, as I was referred to an “automatic gearbox specialist” by my local garage to investigate a “serious fault with the gearbox”! Turns out the same battery ( PowerSonic 12v 1.2A) that is in the video was installed in my Evoque(2012).Same battery was ordered for about £13 on EBay (RR asked £50 and 2 weeks lead time) + 5 min of my time to replace and the issue was resolved. Also, cameras work a lot better now (took a while for them to turn on with the old battery). Again - Big, Big Thank You!
Thanks so much for this video Martin. I had the gearbox fault warning sign appear on and off for about 3 months on my RR Evoque and was confused as my car is in perfect condition. After watching your video I went on eBay and purchased the exact same replacement battery that RR originally used and this morning I replaced the battery myself. It cost me $23 AUD and only took me about 10 minutes. So easy.! Thanks again 👌🏽
Hi, i am looking at ebay but cannot find that item. Can i now what is the name ya?
Hi
What the name of the battery pls I have same issue

Hi Martin, thank you for this video, you just saved me $700 as my mechanic was going to replace my alternator which still would not have fixed the problem. I replaced the battery yesterday and it cleared the fault light. Very happy :)
The actual batter or the small auxiliary battery?
Martin, thanks so much for this video! It saved me lots of time and nerves. Mind you, nobody (including me) even knew before that RR evoque has an auxiliary battery and we could not explain some issues
Hi. Thank you so much for the video- a real game changer. Had the same issue on my 2012 evoque, cost me R1100 for LR to confirm it was the aux battery. LR wanted to charge R2000 for the battery and R1800 to fit. I sourced a 12v 1.4Ah Forbatt battery here in South Africa for R115. Fitted it myself very easily thanks to your video (did not disconnect the main battery). Lets hope that solves the issues. Keep posting as it really helps.
Hey where in SA can I buy it
Hi brother did you buy it on takealot?
Did this work for you? I’m having the same issue
Thank you so much for the video. Ordered myself this battery today from eBay £13. My RR started alerting me to a gearbox warning but disappeared with a second. Gear’s feels fine.
I’m hoping this resolves the matter once I receive the new battery.❤
Hi Martin. Had exactly the same issue with my 63 plate RR Evoque. Followed your instructions here (managed to get a replacement battery for 10 GBP) and voilà... no more errors! Thanks for posting! Sure this would have cost a small fortune had I taken to garage to investigate the error. Thanks again.
Hi Stephen, can you write exactly how it’s calls and where I can find it please? Thanls
Power-Sonic PS1212 SLA Battery ... i purchased from a website called LED Hut.
Hi Stephen, please could you tell me what exactly the name of what you brought. Thank you
Thanks mate, it was very hopeful and i managed to do it by myself thanks to you … I have been asked to pay $450for the battery and to put it in… it did cost me in the end $51.
Thanks again 🙏
thanks for this video, especially the instructions on removing the plastic cover!
Great video! When it has this gearbox fault caused by the aux battery, does the transmission go into gear or does the R or D just flash when you put it in gear?
thank you so much, bought one for $20 aus changed it and bingo. unbelievable, who n
knows how much they would have charged me. awesome
To get the answer you're looking for...just add another zero to the $20 you spent, then you'll get the answer.🤣🤣🤣
Thank you Martin ! Life saver ❤
hello martin i have a question what is the function of this battery exactly and what happens if the fault light comes on.
Hello
I drive a Land Rover Evoque 2012 automatic.
I have the problem that my gear selector can no longer turn properly.
I have to pull it up and down and move it left and right until I can shift gears again.
Would it helps to Change the auxiliary Battery ?
I have not seen that fault on mine. It sounds more like a real fault!
Hi Martin, Thanks for the video! Just switched out my aux battery and warning is still coming up 😢 Could it be a case that the battery needs to take some charge or....? Thanks in advance
And also to point out, mine was as yours was in the video, but now the warning won't go off at all no matter how many times I turn off & on
Hi Martin, I'm about to replace the auxilliary battery on our 2013 evoque which displays the same warning message. Any other tips before I venture into the unknown? Lol! Just waiting for the battery I ordered. Thanks for the vid!
It is quite easy to do (once you have done it! ) Don't force it but a screwdriver may be needed to lever it out gently.
@@supplyimaging thank you!
Great video Martin... But how to identify if it's a aux battery fault or actual gearbox fault?
Does this battery charger as we drive?
@@singhswat....yes
Hi guys i have the same problem with my 2017 evogue, will purchase the battery now and fingers crossed!!
I have a 2017 evoque but can’t locate the auxiliary battery. Where is it?
Thank you, the Dealership doesn’t even know this!😂
Hi Martin thanks for the video, just a question did you disconnect the main battery before changing the auxiliary battery, or did you just swap it out? Thanks!
That is a good question! I think that you probably should but I think I probably didn't .The wires are easily kept apart if you are careful. Measure the volts on the battery before you disconnect and also once disconnected. If it goes below 11volts once disconnected you may have found the fault!!! And saved a lot of money!
You should always disconnect the main battery as a precaution. Trust a master tech who has made some very costly mistakes over the years
Hi wat if the battery is 10 months old and can be charged?
Thank you Martin for valuable info. Would you know if Evoque is North American market designated, i.e. LH Drive, would this battery still be behind glove box? Or in steering column area?
I would think it would be on the passenger side.
In my country 12 volt 1.3 Ah battery is available but that is not helping me resolve this problem would like to know if only 1.2Ah and 1.4Ah compatible with RR Evoque ?
The amp hour is not important if it fits. BUT is the old battery low volts? If it is 12.6volts still, then the battery is probably not the fault anyway. Good Luck...
Yes 12 volt 1.Ah worked for me thanks
Thank you very much such an easy fix was worried
Hi I have a 2018 Evoque. The car had a warning light displaying gearbox fault however it drives perfectly until I get to approx 70mph at which point if I accelerate hard I can feel a judder whilst accelerating. If the car stays at a constant speed then the judder disappears. I had it plugged in to a diagnosis machine and it came up with a code P07D4-07. Any ideas?
I have the same problem, how did you solve it?
Hello, I need some help please. I have 2011 RR Hse. All my warning signs came on and want start at all. The brake is hard and I have to keep my finger on the push start to roll down windows. Can that be the battery? My truck not even sitting up how it was when I purchased it 2mths ago.. Plz help. Thanks in advance
For 5 years my 17 in US says start due to low battery.Last week stoped at a light it wouldn’t take off so shut it off n restarted. It was hesitant to drive for a second but made it go.
Thank you for sharing this video, I have a RR Evoque 2019 L551, but I cannot find this auxillary battery, someone know the position? Thank you in advance
Hi Martin - I have this problem but the aux battery is not there! A control module box is in it’s place. Any suggestions?
Maybe a video or photo would show the module better and someone might have an answer....
hi mate, I have the same issue did u manage to locate the battery?????
Hi martin, this s for all model ? i ve an evoque 2025 auto 2.2,i can t see the batery there, thanks
Howzit Martin, I have the same issue, could this cause vehicle to switch off/shall at low or close to close low speeds ??
I have a 2017 Evoque. I bought the battery and went to replace it but for some reason my auxiliary battery isn’t located in the same spot. Does anyone else know if there are any other locations for the battery?
on 2015 and up they changed, its a bigger battery located on the engine, inside of where the wipers engine are on the left side
@@paulomolnar oh geez, I made the same mistake, got the battery but there is no place.
Hello my Range Rover evoque show transmission fault on the dashboard sorry any suggestions a reply would do a lot🙏
Hi, where can i buy the battery? Can i get the name ? Is it Auxillary Battery?
My 2016 evoques shuts off and doesn’t turn back on into a hour or two past then it’s says geabox fault hdc control and temperature indication
Hi Martin
I have changed disk and clutch after we fit the gearbox and everything it shows the same message on dashboard I changed the main battery but still the same message coming in the dashboard the car is manual not automatic so do you thing that I need to change the axillary battery ? Or any other advice please
Hi
I am not a complete expert! I would only say that measuring the voltage of this small battery when unpluged and making sure it is 12volts or more is the way to check the battery. I found the Rangerover systems worked better once I replaced the old battery which measured 10.5 volts. Not only did it clear the gearbox fault indication but seemed to clear camera faults and main battery charging as well.
Is it the same on the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover?
Is this the same solution for a 2011 range rover sport?
Why couldn't you just run a wire from the main battery? Would that not work?..
I think that battery is probably used to stop glitches from upsetting the electronics when starting and the main battery volts get low. That is the only reason I would have designed it like that! (must be a diode in the circuit for that to work)
Hello Martin is the gearbox the same as a transmission fault? And If so can i use the same battery? I noticed the replacement battery is a 1.2amp in which I can not find but I’ve come across 1.4amp battery . Does it matter?
As long as the battery is 12v and fits the space it should be OK but it may not be fix. Other things might cause the fault light. Hopefully the battery will fix it though.
I have 2017 where is the battery located
Hi Martin, were there any other driving effects of the fault or just the fault warning? Reason I ask is because my automatic RR Evoque 2017 model has been stuttering for a few months, every now and then it feels like it jerks into gear or has no power (normally on first start up and at low speed), but until now it hadn't shown any warning messages on the dashboard. I booked it in to Lookers RR for a few things, one of which was this, but they wanted to charge £216 GBP just to diagnose. I didn't want to pay that and asked for a 6mth early service (I have service plan) as I thought it may be fuel starvation or something that a filter change or gearbox oil topup may fix. They said they couldn't do the service early but they did seem to have a look at a few things without charging, the engineer apparently felt the clunky gearchange but with the few checks he did it didn't show anything too sinister..... Roll on to today and my wife has just had the same clunky gear change & lack of power, and on stopping up at her destination has now been given the "Gearbox Error" message (never been given this until now). It wouldn't allow her to put it in reverse, she switched it all off and back on and managed to get it into reverse so she can at least get out of the parking space forward later. Hopefully we won't need recovery and she can make it home later as RR Assist has expired and not realising this I didn't add recovery to my insurance. Typical, warranty ends and things start to go wrong. So, back to the original question, did you only experience the warning with no performance issues, or was your issue like mine and solved by the battery change?
No driving effects from this BUT had some nasty effects when a wheel speed sensor failed. That stopped the power steering, stability control and ABS! Have you got a diagnostic device? I bought one for my Evoque and it showed lots of errors/faults and could reset the fault codes and reset the battery setup for changing the battery. It also showed me that the Landrover garage which charges £150 an hour plus vat to diagnose faults did not even reset the fault codes after they looked at the problems!!!
Good luck with yours.
I’m the same clunky gear change and lack of power. What was the outcome of your situation? Looking for which direction to go.
@@jherylcatchings8323 fortunately the dealership sorted my issue, they put in a case for a new gearbox and JLR agreed to contribute 100% given my previous history as a “loyal customer”. As it turned out the technician found the gearbox seal was faulty but there was no apparent damage to the box itself, so the new gearbox option was revoked and instead the dealership were instructed to replace the seal etc. I sent it back in 4mths later the drain and check the oil for evidence of wear from the previous low oil, apparently there were no evidence of this and the car was driving well, so it got more new oil and on my way I went. So far so good, fingers crossed it lasts.
@@supplyimaging I did get a diagnostic device but mine showed no errors. I did take it to an independent specialist (who ironically previously worked for the dealer I bought and ended up back at) who ran some detailed tests and found a gearbox fault. He could’ve done the work but as he knew I had a discussion with the JLR dealer ongoing, suggested I show them the report, insist it’s not good enough for a relatively new car and continue with my argument that they fix it (then see reply to Jheryl how it ended with JLR).
I'm having the same issues. Now reverse won't work at all
I see you have a 1.2 Amp hr as a replacement. Does a 1.4 amp of the same brand and part number works as well?
If it fits it should be OK
Can anybody tell me whats the use of this auxilary battery because even after the fault comes, the car runs normally!!
I had the errors on display this morning (gearbox failure, hdc, etc..) i noticed 3 or 4 hiccups while changing gears (i felt as if you run over a little stone). After a while it seems the batteries charged, and errors disappeared. I hardly use the Evoque. I guess the batteries are weak and need replacing as they are not holding the charge while not in use. I’m changing the auxiliary in a few days and i’ll report back
Hi,
Does this cure mechanical problems with the gearbox, or just a wrong error message?
Thanks
John
Just error messages
Great info.!
Hi Martin
Where do i buy this battery from? And what is it call?
Thanks
Google for it or Ebay. There are plenty... There is a close up of the new battery
Great video. I have a 2015 evoque pure with the same issue however, there isn’t a battery in that location for me. The main difference is that mine is a U.S. model but I can’t find the battery no matter where I look under the glove compartment.
Is there anyone that know where I could look or how to resolve this issue?
Haaahhh! I guess you don't know exactly where to look, maybe because there's bunch of wires there, but the Auxiliary battery you're looking for is there underneath the glove box. It doesn't matter whether your Evoque is in the us or Asia...I'm in S/Africa and my Evoque has the same Auxiliary battery as the ones in Uk or elsewhere, the only difference would be a Left hand steering or Right hand car. Anyway Goodluck.😂😂
Do you have to remove the extra connector from the old Range Rover battery and attach it to the new one or will the connectors still fit the new battery without the extra connector?
Yes it fits
@@supplyimaging that’s great. Thanks Martin. Fingers crossed it’ll get rid of the error message. The next job after this will be replacing the door latch!
Hi Martin, I swapped the battery out today and problem solved! Error message gone! It took 5 minutes flat. Thanks very much!
Thanks a LOT
Is this for 2015 model? I don’t see where to replace
2011-2 model and petrol
Hi 👋 I have same your problem and I have changed the battery today but didn't happen something its still have a problem 😑 what I can do man 🙏
Make sure the volts on the new auxillary battery are 12.6volts or more. If the volts are 12.6volts or more and the warning still shows then go to a garage as it may be Faulty Gearbox! I only know this cure for my faulty gearbox warning.
Hi there did you get this fixed ? As mine is doing this warning now too
@@wwenetwork2971 Yes I have fixed it it was pubm that has problems and it was very expensive
@@supplyimaging Hi in my range Rover evoque don't see this auxiliary battery
Correct… thank you
Hi Martin,
I was this just to clear the dashboard fault display, or did this repair / replacement also impact the change of gear of park to neutral to D / Drive? I noticed quite a thud as it moves into D, (not though into R / Reverse) and thought I'd ask if you had a similar experience perhaps? Hoping my issue is just a minor battery replacement and not something more mechanical :)
Thanks,
Lee - Cape Town, South Africa
Mainly did it to mend 'Gearbox Fault' warning. I think it has also cured a fault where some of the cameras would just be blue screen. I get the impression there are other things this little battery might be reponsible for. The old battery when out was at 10.5 volts and will not charge. The new one was 12.5volts before I put it in. check the voltage of your battery to see if it needs replacing anyway.
@@supplyimaging Thank you very much, I'll follow your advice and have that particular battery tested!
Hi Martin or anyone else who can help. I have this very issue but with my Range Rover Sport L494. The car was in with a specialist today and he couldn’t fix it. I’ve disconnected the main battery and allowed enough time for the ECG to rest but still showing gearbox fault on the dash.
Hello , how did you resolve your situation? Was it just the battery or other mechanical issues ? I’m having similar problems and my car stutters and delays for secs sometimes before it goes into gear and sometime there’s low power during acceleration.
Thank you
Just switched both of the batteries and it’s still showing the warning
What was the voltage on the batteries when disconnected? Not that it helps but if they were 12.5volts or more then it was not the batteries.

You would need to measure the volts on the little battery (disconnect one of the connections to it first ). If they are 12volts then it is probably a real gearbox fault!!
