Being a kid of 90s era, I can feel the nostalgia man!! It was really the golden days of music industry, seeing Prabhudeva & A R Rehman sir uniting & creating a musical masterpiece like this was a treat for music lovers like us..Jai Hind..
After seeing your reaction videos only I realised Prabhudeva and Vadivelu shares a unique bond. They have done lots of song together 🙂
And this is how A R Rahman introduced rap to mainstream commercial Tamil Cinema. This song makes a statement where the hero is mocking traditional dance establishments. That is why foreigners are shown... they are there to learn traditional dance and are seen enjoying the rap.

Theres a lot of places in India where people from all over the world including Europe and the US who come to learn Indian classical dances and music. It is a common sight in cities like Varanasi etc.

LOL! Okay this movie is set around a Bhartnatyam (classical dance) school. Thats also why you see all the white people because - fun fact - a ton of people from around the world go to South India to learn classical Indian art forms, dance, instruments, singing, etc. Because they need to live there for years, and also train like the locals, you'll see a ton of them dressed in Indian clothes, saris etc.
The actress is a traditionalist - believes classical dance should be kept pure, is for the 'upper class' etc etc. Prabhudeva plays an average Joe type guy who wants to lern dance but also bring his own style - aka breaking away from the more traditional mores. Its a fun watch!
Agreed!! just one correction... A lot of people from around the world come to India to learn different art forms not specifically southern states but from different regions
That’s shot at Kalakshetra. The modern day spiritual headquarters of Bhratanatyam. More white people per sqm there than anywhere else in India. They have been there since pre independence with Annie Beasant and the theosophical society just next door.

To meet her prabhu deva joins the classical dance school prabhudeva dont know classical dance to impress her in other way he dance pettairap dance its usually done for deadbody funeral procession from home to graveyard.

yes, imagine how weird it was back in the 90's. Rahman sort of introduced western fusion songs back in those days which opened up a new type of genre in Tamil films which caught many younger generations at that time. Prior to Rahman's music, mostly was on classical based songs and commonly made by Ilayaraja (another legend in Tamil Music)
Rahman literally changed the style of music back then.

The dancer's rap is full of words depicting Chennai people's life arranged in a random way. It is funny because the words are added in allitration and also in a discipline. Even enjoyable. You've just entered the holy territory of Tamil Gana (a type of laymans rap in Tamil Nadu). ARR has blessed it with grace and made it evergreen.
Prabhu deva presented it with his authority on the local dance form called Kuthu.
In Tamil Nadu, there is a cultural significance for this dance form. It is done by the drunk layman who dances it in a trance state during the final march to graves/funerals. It is in relation to the belief system which says even death should be a celebration as a birth. Kuthu dance is the most famous in South India and all people do it frequently to show their joy and sorrow. It's a philosophy by itself. India loves to see this dance songs from the South.

Everything about this song is very unique. Every step Prabhu does and every lyric has a cultural reference to it. It was during the time when there was lot of western influence into Indian culture hence the tag line of the song "Pettai Rap" (pettai - area or locality or hood). As for the steps he does every single one of them has a local cultural reference. For example 4:50 every step is a he does in that small portion is a loose version of steps that Lord Shiva does in different phases. And there are other local references. To add to this ARR introduced modern Rap to Tamil music with this song.
