Your reviews always tell the whole story, I really appreciate that. Normally one would have to watch different videos and read multiple sites to come to a conclusion, but your reviews are so spot on, that's hardly necessary. Thank you so much. P.S. The courier is on his way, getting this ultrabook in a few hours, woohoo!
The Vaio Duo 11 has a lovely display, but the 1080p series 9 has a wider color gamut, thus it's more color accurate (unless you select Samsung's Movie Mode or high contrast mode settings that mess with color balance).
Sold my MacBook Air long ago, so it can't smack down the Series 9. But I would choose the Series 9 over the Air, unless you want Mac OS. My main machine is a 15" Retina now, Air didn't have the power I needed for video editing.
this is exactly what I needed, thank you! just a note, having something like time stamps in your info about the different aspects would be very useful, or even just a title in the video I can see when getting a timestamp preview, if that makes sense. so that way I could skip to sections about performance or battery life. just a minor foot note. thanks again
I've just purchased the Samsung Series 9 13.3 inch Ultrabook Premium with i7, 4GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Absolutely blow away. Boots in 4-5 seconds and I'm getting up to 7 hours battery life.....
I got the Series 9, 15" and I absolutely love it. I wiped Windows 8, and installed Ubuntu 12.04 and it runs *PERFECTLY*. Absolutely wonderful laptop, feels incredibly solid, fast, thin, light, and performant. Best laptop I've owned, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Do you want a touch screen? Then get the Asus UX31A Touch or the Samsung Series 7 Ultra/ATIV Book 7. If you want a lovely matte display and a super light machine with a metal casing get the Series 9 1080p model.
The point of this machine is being as thin and light as possible. Thus, there's just no room for lots of ports or cooling for a quad core CPU. Now 8 gigs of RAM, that's perfectly reasonable and I'd like to see that option.
Samsung and Asus are really in a class of their own lately. Putting i7's and SSD's, I had the pleasure working with both and all I can say is SUPERB. My almost 2yr old, rather bulky Probook can not keep up... except gaming, which always is a bummer when it comes to ultrabooks.
Lisa what are your thoughts on the fragility of these ultrabooks? I recently purchased a Macbook Pro Retina and I am terrified of taking it out of the house because of how easily the aluminum can be scratched. I imagine it is no different with the Samsung you reviewed. Seems to me there must be some middle ground between thinness and aesthetics, and something that is practical to lug around without worry.
Hi Lisa, love the review. I am considering getting the "ATIV Book 6" as it has a bigger screen and a dedicated gpu. Could you do a review on it, I have been scouring the web and have found little to no video reviews on it. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I saw a video of it today and the screen is VERY reflective because of the gloss touch screen. The samsung rep had it inside and you could barely see the screen from all the glare. I wanted the 3200x 1600 triple HD Ativ Plus but I'm going to get this because this has a matte screen so you can use it with no glares even outside!
Quality hardware in high quality review ! Please, Lisa, give us some high quality hardware too: new Series 7 Ultra, Asus Transformer Boox TX300, Lenovo Helix... Stuff dreams are made of ! Thank you for detailed review !!!
Hej Lisa. First, love your reviews, your awsome! I looked around for the X3E but could not find it with i7 2.0 as the one you reviewed. They only seem to be available with the i5 1.7...at least here in Europe(?). Is the i7 2.0 an upcoming release?
Thanks for your review ! But I have some questions about its trackpad.. Firstly, can it be CLICKED or it's just a TOUCHPAD which is similar to ordinary nontebook ? I mean , does it feel like click the key on the mouse and Apple magic trackpad ? And , does the trackpad have gestures (such as two-finger-sliding) like the multi-touch trackpad on MacBooks? I'm still a English learner , so please forgive my language errors above . Thank you.
Got all that and more, including 4 extra MB of RAM for $25 from Crucial giving me a total of 8 GB. The screen on my Sony VPCSE 190S is so spectacular, I can never go back to anything less than full HD 1080p. It's thin light, I can edit video, pics play most games and if and when the fan kicks in, it has a smooth sound unlike those in other laptops. Touch screen on a laptop to me, makes little sense. I didn't opt for an SSD, but boot time is seconds and it has an optical drive in a thin chassis.
Hey Lisa, I've been having this notebook for about 2 months now and I am quite happy with it. BUT, in my opinion, the text is just too small at the highest resolution (1080p). I do a lot of text-related work like coding and reading a *lot* of papers (PDFs) on it. Unless I zoom in on the text, it is quite hard on my eyes. What is your comment on it?
How does the keyboard on the ativ 9 compare to the one on the X1 carbon? Love the X1's keyboard, but the display is underwhelming due to the protective film on the screen. The touch screen isn't as much of a deal breaker as having a great keyboard/screen for me.
lovely review as always. I have the first gen series 9. loved it until i slapped w8 on it. it destroyed my battery. it dies in under an hour if that. i don't think it was meant for it. but this on the other hand seems promising.
Truth, part of the solution lies in the operating system and applications having better built in scaling based on resolution. I play at 1200p on a 24" monitor and most MMO's fail at making text readable at that size/resolution combo.
Hello, I'm currently looking at the new NP900X3F-K01. I can't really find lots of reviews on this specific one, so could you please tell what the difference between 900X3F and 900X3E is? Thank you
Hello. What do you think about 900X3G-K02 version? Do you think it's better then 9 Plus 940X3G? (1920x1080 is enough for me, I don't think I will use 3200x1800 res and I don't like touching the screen also)
There's a video here on RUclips where someone opens a Series 9 Notebook to show that you actually can upgrade the RAM. Is this revision (900X3E) different in that respect?
as of now probably Samsung Chronos 7 touch (780Z5E) or Acer R7 Waiting for review for Acer R7's contrasts an black number I am guessing screen probably better on Series 7(Black: 0.2 cd/m² Contrast: 1435:1 which is RIDICULOUS !)
Have you used the Windows desktop with a 13" 1440p resolution? I don't know about you, but my eyeballs want to fall out unless I set scaling to 150%, somewhat defeating the point of having such super resolution.
I'm actually wondering whether I should get the 15 inch version of this or just abandon the windows ship and buy a more expensive 15 inch retina macbook. I mean the rMBP isn't that much of a pain to carry around right? And the RAM situation on these things is really annoying. I might need more than 8gb down the road. I'm a Computer Science student if that matters.
I understand completely, but I do think that in this case the wording "top of the line" and these mid-end specs (sorry, but that's what it looks like to me) do clash here and there. Fewer ports and a lesser CPU doesn't make for "top of line". Perhaps only in design terms then, but certainly not overall.
The model comes too late, Haswell is here in a few weeks. I would also gladly take a 1or 2 mm thicker model if it's what it takes for a touch screen and more RAM. The Series 7 which is more reasonable equipped is unfortunately quite far from the aesthetics of the Series 9.
hey i love your videos. can u please answer or make a video about if u can play games on this laptop. please can someone plz answer to my question.i really need to know
Incredible laptop - I have the 15" version. Wiped windows 8, and put Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I really couldn't be happier. Well, not entirely true.. 8 gigs of RAM is a bit low for me.
Nice i ran suse 12.3 with tumble weed for about three months till 13.04 came out package kit just drives me crazy because i usally just used zypper or the build service to install stuff i ended up having to manually kill packagekit each time i ran zypper. Now im running 13.04 with the 3.9.2 kernel
This is a fabulous machine indeed. I am really into the "complete silence" when using it, as hearing the fans blow all the time is something that seriously annoys me, and I have to deal with it almost non-stop on my HP elitebook from work, even when I'm not doing anything with it apart from having Outlook and Skype open. Dreadful.
Hiw foes this compare with asus zenbook prime touch ux31a and asus taichi? Besides the fact that this is not touchscreen. I have samsung note 2, is there some kind of integration (all share) with theses two devices. I really like this design but touch screen is nice (undecided) anyone have an opinion?
To everyone who keeps asking about which notebooks to buy: computers are kind of like cars. Most cars work the same, and at the same price point, most cars have similar quality. However, there are slight styling and mechanical differences for each segment, and each manufacturer has a different design ethos. However, there are special exotic cars that demand steep prices for their quality, rarity, and exclusivity, there are exotic computer models. For most $1000 ultrabooks, choose the one you lik
Yep, I remember. Quite a few folks joined you in asking for a review of this machine too.
Around 65 to 70 gigs. If you back up and then remove the recovery partition you can gain up to 20 gigs additional.
You may feel confused but you got it right, those are Samsung's new names for their current machines. And the Series 7 Ultra is the ATIV Book 7 now.
Yes, the trackpad supports gestures- that's a Windows 8 requirement. And the trackpad clicks when you press it.
The Vaio Duo 11 has a lovely display, but the 1080p series 9 has a wider color gamut, thus it's more color accurate (unless you select Samsung's Movie Mode or high contrast mode settings that mess with color balance).
We're still trying to get a hold of the Chronos 7. Samsung doesn't have a review program, and it's not easy to find in stores.
In fact we have a ThinkPad T431s review loaner arriving later this week, so we will review it.
You can get the 15" version of the Series 9 with 8 gigs of RAM. It's just the 13.3" model that's stuck at 4 gigs.
The written review is up on MobileTechReview.
Sold my MacBook Air long ago, so it can't smack down the Series 9. But I would choose the Series 9 over the Air, unless you want Mac OS. My main machine is a 15" Retina now, Air didn't have the power I needed for video editing.
I believe the 900X3F-K01 is the same thing, but it has a Core i5 instead of a Core i7 CPU. Maybe 7% lower performance at most.
No, RAM is still soldered on the slightly older 900X3C Series 9.
this is exactly what I needed, thank you!
just a note, having something like time stamps in your info about the different aspects would be very useful, or even just a title in the video I can see when getting a timestamp preview, if that makes sense. so that way I could skip to sections about performance or battery life. just a minor foot note.

Do you want to run Windows or Mac OS X? I'd base my decision on that since Apple's Windows drivers are pretty basic.

Well, this one is obviously a smaller display, and if I recall correctly, the Sony Vaio S 15.5 has a glossy display (matte is better).
Sounds like your machine needs updated drivers for the motherboard and power management because battery life shouldn't be that short.
Lisa what are your thoughts on the fragility of these ultrabooks? It has the Intel 6235N and mine came with the Intel driver.
I saw a video of it today and the screen is VERY reflective because of the gloss touch screen. The samsung rep had it inside and you could barely see the screen from all the glare. Nice review as always! I have this in the X3C variation and I have to say it's a fantastic piece of hardware with good Linux support.
Hi Lisa what is the best laptop with a very good touchscreen with great resolution and colours in your opinion? Oh and 15.6 at least?
Thanks for your review ! But I have some questions about its trackpad..
Firstly, can it be CLICKED or it's just a TOUCHPAD which is similar to ordinary nontebook ? I mean , does it feel like click the key on the mouse and Apple magic trackpad ?

Great review! How does this model briefly compare to the new 900X3F-K01?
how can you compare this screen to the vaio duo 11 in terms of color accuracy, which one is better ?
and awesome review as always thanks to you.
Haswell might not hit Ultrabooks until the fall, so I'm guessing Samsung didn't want to wait.
that looks really good. great review Lisa

Haswell didn't exist when this was released, and a Haswell touch version was announced in early June with all the other Haswell announcements.
How does the keyboard on the ativ 9 compare to the one on the X1 carbon? Love the X1's keyboard, but the display is underwhelming due to the protective film on the screen. The touch screen isn't as much of a deal breaker as having a great keyboard/screen for me.
nice, i'm waiting for the written review too :)
lovely review as always. I have the first gen series 9. loved it until i slapped w8 on it. it destroyed my battery. it dies in under an hour if that. i don't think it was meant for it. but this on the other hand seems promising.
Hi. I was wondering how the Samsung Ativ 5 compares? I've not found a lot of reviews about it anywhere!
I was literally just looking on Amazon at the Series 9 range. It's creepy when your uploads are so damn relevant! STOP IT! LOL
Truth, part of the solution lies in the operating system and applications having better built in scaling based on resolution. I play at 1200p on a 24" monitor and most MMO's fail at making text readable at that size/resolution combo.
Looks like this is going to be a nice replacement for my poorly aging HP Envy. Do you know if it's also offered in a 15.6' model?
Hello, I'm currently looking at the new NP900X3F-K01. I can't really find lots of reviews on this specific one, so could you please tell what the difference between 900X3F and 900X3E is? Thank you
The Z4 is undeniably gorgeous and great hardware all around. Tomorrow the weather will be better and I'll probably be in jail ;)
Nice review!
Hello. What do you think about 900X3G-K02 version? Do you think it's better then 9 Plus 940X3G? (1920x1080 is enough for me, I don't think I will use 3200x1800 res and I don't like touching the screen also)
which os do you prefer for designing? should I wait for the ATIV 9 plus or the new MBPR haswell or get the current MBPR, 15" or 13"?
I've got openSUSE 12.3 on there and it runs great out of the box. The only thing which doesn't really work is keyboard backlighting.
Hey Lisa, would you get this or a Zenbook (Older Models, cost about $1,000~). Considering a budget, build quality, battery and power. Thanks :)
There's a video here on RUclips where someone opens a Series 9 Notebook to show that you actually can upgrade the RAM. Is this revision (900X3E) different in that respect?
Can we do a PowerPoint on this laptop?
Hello, I figure by now youve ran it for some good time. Im wonder how the battery life is on this computer? thanks
as of now probably Samsung Chronos 7 touch (780Z5E) or Acer R7
Waiting for review for Acer R7's contrasts an black number
I am guessing screen probably better on Series 7(Black: 0.2 cd/m² Contrast: 1435:1 which is RIDICULOUS !)
I wonder if Samsung will update the 9 Series and put in like a multi-touch trackpad and like a QHD display.
between this the asus zenbook prime with touch and the new haswell 2013 macbook air which one would you choose?
Yheeee. I have 2 of these, and obvious love em'! Seems like you like it too Lisa!? Put it up against your Air please, in a smackdown!
Have you used the Windows desktop with a 13" 1440p resolution? I don't know about you, but my eyeballs want to fall out unless I set scaling to 150%, somewhat defeating the point of having such super resolution.
Do you know when the haswel update will be on this ultrabook?
i'll go for this if it comes at 11.6" & touchscreen, have with other specs
can you do a review on the samsung ATIV book 9 plus (with haswell)?
I'm actually wondering whether I should get the 15 inch version of this or just abandon the windows ship and buy a more expensive 15 inch retina macbook. I mean the rMBP isn't that much of a pain to carry around right? And the RAM situation on these things is really annoying. I might need more than 8gb down the road. Hi can u make a video of samsung series 7 chronos 770z5e is the best gaming laptop or not with giving full review plz
PLEASE ANSWER THIS!!!! I'm a student and I want to get a computer to work a AUTO CAD program on it would you recommend this computer for that?
No
So, is this IPS? any data on sRGB coverage %? How's the battery life compared to, say, 900x3c?
Will you be reviewing the Lenovo Thinkpad T431s?
When will they bring Full HD to the 15"? Thank you.
I understand completely, but I do think that in this case the wording "top of the line" and these mid-end specs (sorry, but that's what it looks like to me) do clash here and there. is there also a 15 inch version with FHD display?
is this model going with 15''' screen????and if it has HDMI or HDMI mini port???
can you please do a review on the hp spectre xt touchsmart
Hi. Any slots for more ram?
Thanks
no.
Nice looking piece of machinery
Is the 900x3c (few months older) ram expandable to 8gig.?
i noticed the screen flickering, is that an effect or what?
Please compare between this model and the asus zenbook prime.
Can I simply update that through software updates?
Thing is, should I get this or the new Macbook Air when it comes out?
whats the screen size and how much does it cost?
Which series 9 15inch non full hd has the Samsung ssd and not sundisk?
This is a fabulous machine indeed. I am really into the "complete silence" when using it, as hearing the fans blow all the time is something that seriously annoys me, and I have to deal with it almost non-stop on my HP elitebook from work, even when I'm not doing anything with it apart from having Outlook and Skype open. Awesome review! Thank you.
Still using it
Look at the MacBook Pro retina only if you want to install windows on it for gaming

This model is $1,299 at Amazon, $1,399 list.
how to recovery with kind of this laptop samsung series 9 NP900 X3E?
Thanks for asking, it's awesome. Though it poured all day, so I couldn't really have fun driving like a demon.
Any recommendations for college? I want a portable notebook preferably a 13 something inch one

where can i find these 9 series 900x3e/3d/3c ??
+1 for linux what distro are you running
could you do a review on Samsung ATIV Book 8? :D
