  • The Star Wars prequel trilogy remains controversial nearly 25 years after the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It was one of the most anticipated movies of all time when it came out in May 1999. Still, fans were lately left cold by the kid-oriented entry, which had a lot of Trade Embargoes and Pod Racing but little in the way of the high adventure of the original films, even if people loved Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and his climactic, Duel of the Fates, battle with Darth Maul. The sequel introduced Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, and his performance and that of Natalie Portman as Padme were criticized, even if they did away with Jar-Jar Binks this time. Yet, the third entry, Revenge of the Sith, ended the trilogy on an appropriately dark note.
In this mini-doc, we take a look back at all three films, digging deep into their flaws and surprising virtues.

John Williams received an Oscar nomination for every Disney's Star Wars movie he composed, despite being practically the same soundtracks from the original trilogy
But when he brought completely new soundtracks to the prequels, the Academy simply ignored him

Rubbish, the new themes are excellent. I can hum the resistance theme, kylos theme, reys, etc. there is actual character work here, whereas the PT has Lucas micromanaging everything and only battles having memorable scores.

What's great about the prequels is that it came from one artist telling the story and taking risks. So many films these days are so safe and feel like they come off an assembly line. The prequels feel unique and more importantly, they feel like Star Wars.

Looking back, the prequel trilogy would have worked better as a TV series, fleshing out the characters & their motivations. You could look at "The Phantom Menace" as the first season involving world-building, being a slow burn reintroducing people to the "Star Wars" universe & getting a look at how the politics of the Old Republic worked. You would see the galaxy before it was turned upside down by the Empire. The other seasons would have been about how the Old Republic ultimately fell apart & what allowed Palpatine to rise to power & take control, including Anakin's fall to the Dark Side. Who else thinks this?

With regard to the sequel films, The Force Awakens was a mostly-good setup, to what could have been a phenomenal trilogy. Then I saw The Last Jedi, and words don't exist to tell you how much I hated it. That entire movie was one huge politically correct, feminist-driven mess. It soured my attitude toward the franchise so completely, that I never saw The Rise of Skywalker. I read the plot of it on Wikipedia, and was disgusted by it.
As for the TV shows, I haven't seen much of them, but I've heard some good things about The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka. I know Hayden Christensen came back for the latter two, and I saw Mark Hamill's de-aged Luke Skywalker cameo online. Enough of the fans seem to like those shows, so apparently the people behind them are doing something right. Lucasfilm just needs to fire Kathleen Kennedy immediately; it was a huge mistake for Lucas to trust her with his creations.

I really enjoyed the prequal trilogy because it gave me what i wanted to see in the SW universe that i had only saw in ST universe. What others saw as "boring" i saw as fascinating or intriguing and helped me connect more with the setting. I use to watch the Frasier TV show in the 90s so the dry witty dialogue wasn't odd for me and kinda made since for characters part of an organization or civilization with a long history. The prequels were made for the primary purpose of Episode 3 and watching the films, one can certainly tell that. A person had to tolerate the first two films to reach the gold of Episode 3 Lucas kind of planned the three films together so the rewards were all in the last movie, leaving the first two film relatively unappealing in comparison . The prequel trilogy is a masterpiece compared to the Disney trilogy. At least the prequel trilogy had a decent storyline. Unlike the ST, which were pathetic remakes of Episodes 4-6. Plus, the way they disrespected the legacy characters was unforgivable. For me, Star Wars Skywalker saga ended in Episode 6.

Nope, we're not doing this again. You never had any say in the quality of the sequels versus the prequels because you were always a prequel fan. The sequels were made in a way that attempted to bring back the prestige of the filmmaking of the original trilogy, while rejecting the shoddy filmmaking of the prequels, so of course you don't like the sequels. But just know that the prequel trilogy was rejected by the Star Wars fans who made Star Wars what it is, and to us, the sequel trilogy, while flawed in many ways, was a successful return to what we loved.

If they had made Jar-jar a Dark Sith in the sequels referencing his actions in the prequels as being camouflage of his sinister intentions, it would have made TPM much more rewatchable for me. It wasn't bad, it just didn't deliver the feeling of the original trilogy.
I actually thought AOTC was a step in the right direction for the franchise. Yes, the dialog was really, really bad, but the characters graduated from where they were on TPM.
ROTS was great! As third entries go, it delivers on its title's promise and ties itself into the original trilogy nicely. The dialog is still clunky, but its heart is the strongest of the series. Thank you, George.

The Star Wars prequel is a pure masterpiece, the best movies of all time, a great cult trilogy, exciting from start to finish, the best Star Wars trilogy, the greatest Star Wars trilogy, the richest, the most complete, the best period, everything is superb : the deepening of the Star Wars universe and its narrative elements are superb and exciting, and it explores in detail the Clone Wars period, a crucial moment in Star Wars history 🔥😍 a fundamental and exciting pivotal period 🔥💥🔥 the Clone Wars period is the best Star Wars period 🥳🥰🤗😍🔥💥👍
The fascinating plot that develops throughout the movies. The rise to power of Palpatine, Darth Sidious, is masterfully depicted 🥰 His behind-the-scenes shenanigans to undermine the Galactic Republic and bring the galaxy under his control are meticulously presented. His manipulation to form a huge clone army and eradicate the Jedi with Order 66 is a central element of the story, explaining how the Galactic Empire took shape following the fall of the Republic and how Anakin switched to the dark side of the force in order to become Darth Vader 🔥💖 a fallen hero who just wanted to save those he loved 💥🔥 Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader is a superb, memorable and breathtaking scene 😍💥 the link with the original trilogy is superbly done. Anakin's internal conflict between his loyalty to the Jedi order and his desire to save those he loves makes his story profound and tragic 🔥🔥 His turn to the dark side, with key moments such as his confrontation with Count Dooku and his heartbreaking final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar 💥🔥
The prequel also brought an invaluable richness to the Star Wars universe, a detailed insight into the Jedi order, Padawan training, the Sith, mastery of combat and Jedi teachings 💖💥🔥 The focus on the Sith and their philosophy reinforced the dark side of the Force, adding depth and complexity to the saga.
The political aspect of the prequel adds a new dimension to the Star Wars universe, Palpatine's machinations in the Galactic Senate and the growing tensions between planetary systems, creating a richer context for the later events of the original trilogy, the rise of the Empire, the fall of the Republic, the extinction of the Jedi and the tragic story of Anakin Skywalker 💥🔥
The expansion of the universe is also great. New planets, races, creatures, peoples and cultures are introduced, with dugs, gungans, toydarians, kaminoians, the aquatic city, the queen's palace, the galactic senate, the cloning factory, the gungans' aquatic city, the galactic senate, Naboo and Coruscant the best planets, helping to create a larger, more diverse world 💥🔥 Iconic locations such as Kamino, Geonosis, Utapau, Felucia and Mustafar provide visually captivating backdrops for action scenes, development and key plot moments 😍🥰💖💥 Cult and iconic characters, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn. Mace Windu, General Grievous, Jango Fett, Watto, Sebulba...❤️🔥🔥
The action scenes and lightsaber battles are among the saga's most memorable. Epic battles such as the Battle of Geonosis, the Pod Race on Tatooine, the Battle of Naboo and the Battle Over Coruscant are highly memorable and emblematic of the saga, they are not only visually impressive, superbly well-realized, but they are also emotionally charged, with characters we've grown to love in danger ❤️🔥
Lightsaber duels between iconic characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul and Yoda are executed with exceptional choreography, adding a visceral dimension to the story, the fight on Naboo, the confrontation with Count Dooku, the Senate summit duel between Yoda and Darth Sidious, the fight against Darth Maul and the fratricidal duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin.... 🔥🔥
The prequel also enriches the Star Wars lore with new charismatic and endearing characters, unforgettable music, "Duel of the Fates", "Across the Stars" ", Battle of the Heroes", a super-rich, exciting and very complete lore and a talented cast of actors, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson and Liam Neeson 💖💥😍🔥
Natalie Portman is superb, gorgeous, gentle, sensual and charismatic, lending her character of Padmé Amidala queen and senator of Naboo exemplary strength, determination and courage. She's perfect, she's iconic 🤗🔥💥🥳🥰 Her evolution from a queen to a senator, into a badass, elegant and determined woman, is a central feature of the trilogy 🔥💖💥
Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson bring memorable class and presence to the screen. Their dynamic as Jedi masters is palpable, and they convey a wisdom and determination that anchors the story in Jedi heritage. What's more, Christopher Lee's presence as Count Dooku adds a touch of class, elegance and charisma, amplified by his Shakespearean delivery.
The prequel was the revival of the Star Wars saga, bringing real dramatic scope, real political context, real stakes, new superb and emblematic characters, emblematic action scenes, a much richer universe, a more developed, more diversified universe, and a much more extended universe, it fleshed out the saga's lore, and perfectly complements the original trilogy by being inseparable from it.

As a endearing fan who was part of the generation of kids who grew up on the original trilogy at home on VHS, saw the Special Edition in theaters before turning 12, played with Star Wars action figures and Legos, and sat through the entire prequel trilogy with my family in theaters (The Phantom Menace came out before I turned 14, Attack of the Clones before I turned 17 and Revenge of the Sith before turning 20 and finishing my freshman year in college), I have to admit that I myself have been conflicted with the saga as a whole, a lot of it having to do with the Prequels in isolation, and in the context of cinema in general, during which I both sigh in disappointment upon revisiting them AND reappraise them for being something better and far more than we realized during their initial release, something that happened with maturity and repeated viewings and especially in light of the Disney Sequels.
On the one hand, in terms of cinematic execution when weighed against their predecessors, I can agree with many points as thoroughly assessed in this vid about what made the Prequel Trilogy fail where the Original succeeded. The bad dialogue, largely wooden performances and uninvolving character relationships under George Lucas' direction, his emphasis on love of FX (especially CG) for its own sake, largely unsuccessful attempts at humor, and worst of all, uneven pacing and tone (individually and collectively). Part of this admittedly began with THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI in the original Trilogy to the very first Star Wars (especially love of FX for their own sake), with Lucas trying to make the Original Trilogy expand and mature beyond the fairytale status of the very first film, while being involved only as producer and story writer of the sequels instead of director and screenwriter like he was with the first. It doesn't help that Lucas in his later years, like James Cameron, had a serious case of excessive ego to rival Dracula, building more on the reputation of his earlier successes than quality of storytelling and filmmaking taken together or separately.
But for all its faults in execution, the Prequel Trilogy is certainly not without value, actually succeeding in doing something that the original Trilogy didn't - it actually got better, evolving beyond the missteps of The Phantom Menace to reaching a gratifying conclusion (including the best lightsaber duel in the entire saga, two one-against-ones for the price of one and for the fate of the entire galaxy) in Revenge of the Sith that tied up all the loose ends and made the saga come full circle, something that very few third installments have pulled off (most third films in even the most respected trilogies go downhill after Part II - the best threequel of all time, in my opinion, is The Good, The Bad and the Ugly). Not only did Lucas further expand upon the world-building of the SW universe in both genre and visual motifs, he also did succeed in explaining in more mature and cerebral terms, if at times too fundamentally and clumsily, how the Jedi fell, the Republic gave way to the Empire, and how Anakin Skywalker emerged from humble, bleak origins in isolation to become the most powerful villain in the Galaxy. The simple good-vs.- evil nature of the Original Trilogy was replaced by a more adult approach that actually further justified the approach, characters and events of the Original Trilogy. Each installment actually did get better as the Prequel Trilogy progressed (and not just in terms of FX or music); the main character arcs of Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and even C-3PO and R2D2 were consistent and believable; and with Lucas managing to maintain control of his vision, it did stay true to what he always intended SW to be in the first place - an epic saga unlike anything else that combined the storytelling elements of old with groundbreaking technical achievements in cinema.
Perhaps maybe the best thing that the prequel Trilogy has going for it, beyond its merits both dubious and extraordinary, is that, while we may have been disappointed at first, it's hard for the majority of us to measure any other sci-fi and fantasy film sagas against original, Lucas-based organic SW that have had quite the same impact on mainstream cinema and its audiences that Lucas achieved, with the possible exception of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. I doubt if even the Avatar and Dune movies will match that monumental mythic status that both Lucas and SW have built nearly half a century now. Regardless of its shortcomings, the Prequel Trilogy still has done far more justice to the SW Cinematic Universe than Disney ever could without Lucas's involvement, and while the Disney "Sequel" Trilogy is merely a hollow rehash of what had come before and better, the Prequel Trilogy still shows how Lucas was not just another creator of a niche subgenre in sci-fi - he and his creations under his supervision still remain an uncontested influence on our global culture as a whole.

Give it a few years and you'll have all the kids who grew up with the sequel trilogy making videos about how it's underrated and actually better than the prequels.

The OG Star Wars are the best for sure, but if you take off you’re nostalgia goggles you’ll realize they’re not as great as you think. The largest part of the hate for the prequels is it doesn’t live up to the perceived greatness of the originals. Yes they do fall short but not by as much as people feel.

I truly believe that the Prequel 3logy would've been better if it was a 3.5 h single movie no Jar Jar, more Maul &Sdious, minimal love story, less subplots basically ROTS on steroids ...But Lucas wanted to show the world that he created to its full operatic glory it was out of love for the fans&franchise too bad it wasn't appreciated ...

I absolutely disagre about Hayden Christensen being miscast. I think he has perfect look for Anakin and the problem once again wasn't with his acting skills but the dialog and overall what George Lucas wanted from him and how to act. It has been stated many times from interviews and behind the scenes that he was taking the direction and acting the way G.L. was instructing him to do and he was putting a lot of effort to do what G.L. wanted from him.
If you're deeply into the lore and know about the whole story of the character of Anakin and why he was acting like that it makes sense and I get what Lucas was tryint to do, but purely from a movie perspective if wasn't handled good at all. Christen and Natalie had an actual crush during the firming so it's like the actors didn't have chemistry, I mean from the behind the scenes you can definitely tell they did have chemistry when they talked abound each other as real people, but in the end within the movie, it came down to the director's direction and how he wanted the characters to act with each other.

40 years later I still remember all 3 originals. I've owned copies on DVD, VHS, and even Laser Disc (it's in a closet somewhere). Phaton Meance was so bad I didn't watch the next two films and I barely remember Phantom. Watching Fett's ship leave in 1983 is still a memory burned into my 3 or 4 year old mind. Any attempt to wash over how god awful the prequels were is so Ludacris it should drop an album.

Here's a piece of trivia. The original title of "Return of the Jedi" was "Revenge of the Jedi." I was at a comic book convention back in the day and saw a guy walking away from a memorabilia and prop dealer with a huge(at least 4ft across & 8ft tall, could have been a slightly smaller poster since it was matted and framed)movie theater lobby poster that had the red background with Luke & Vader with crossed light sabers. But the title was "Revenge of the Jedi." I went to the stand I saw him walk away from and asked about it. It was a poster from an invite only pre-screening before any kind of release. The title was changed after that since the reaction to Revenge was negative. So they contacted all theaters with promotional posters and told them not to display them and they would receive new ones. And "Return of the Jedi"was now the final title. And many years later, we get "Revenge of the Sith"

I started with 4-6 and loved them, didn't enjoy 1-3 much as a kid. These days however, I enjoy and admire 1-3 much more. It helps to watch them keeping in mind that Jar Jar Binks is a Sith and his antics were an act to hide his evil schemings. Then it all makes sense, his inclusion, the lack of a Joda-like character in something where everything was meant to rhyme. The politics are nowadays much more interesting. The designs all make sense. etc.
Admittedly, I enjoy 1-3 on an intellectual level while I enjoy 4-6 on an emotional level. 7-9 are enjoyable on a visual spectacle level, I suppose? If I have to be generous.

As a devoted “Original” Star Wars fan since 1977, like all other fans of my generation, it is easy to see why these films are not good from a story, acting and over-reliance on CGI points of view (with notable exceptions of Liam Neeson, Ian McDirmid, Ewan McGregor and Christopher Lee’s performances). But, compared to the thrash Disney turned the franchise into, they are a must in any true fan’s film library. It is sad that we were pushed to accept them because of what Kathleen Kennedy has done.

I grew up watching the originals and Episode I came out when I was 8 so I was the prime age for it. I was obsessed with pod racing and with Darth Maul and I was him for Halloween that year. I didn’t see 2 or 3 until after college because people had such a bad reaction to seeing them and after I saw them I didn’t like Attack of the Clones but I thought Revenge of the Sith was great. Now after spending my late 20s/early 30s watching Clone Wars, going back and watching all three of the prequels is so much better and now I’d say that I go back and watch Revenge of the Sith more than any other movie in the whole series (besides Rogue One, I actually like that one the most 😅) I can find reasons to like any Star Wars content (even the sequels but I mainly watch them because I think Kylo Ren and General Hux are hot lol) but I think that the years that make up the prequels are my favorite years to explore in Star Wars content. I love learning about the lead-up to Order 66 and imo some of the best Star Wars content of all time is Season 7 of Clone Wars

Yeah, sorry, had to stop watching when you claimed that Hayden was miscast as Anakin. He was about the only universally liked aspect of Ashoka. Guy is Anakan and if you've ever seen him act in anything else you'll know that he is a perfectly fine actor. I don't know how many times it needs to be said but for those who haven't heard it yet, GEORGE LUCAS IS BAD AT WRITING DIALOGUE AND DIRECTING ACTORS. You have a plethora of fantastic actors in these movies, Samual Jackson, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christenson, Liam Neeson, who are just straight up bad in these movies or at best passable. There is a common denominator there and no, it doesn't have anything to do with Christenson (or even Jake Loyd) being miscast. I don't care which actor you pick, no one is going to deliver a good performance talking about how much they don't like sand.

The Prequels can be improved massively with only a few fixes. 1) Make Anakin older in Phantom Menace. 2) Move the camera around more. 3) Show more of Anakin and Obi-Wan's friendship. 4) Keep Maul as the Sith Apprentice the whole time and use Dooku as third faction between Sith and Jedi, to add some unique perspective. The sequels are borderline unfixable.

The problem with the prequel trilogy is the dialogue and the actors not contesting it.
The cast of the original trilogy knew their characters and knew what and how they would say something.

Fair video, but 27 minutes in and it's kind of mind boggling. The video is coming from the perspective that many fans still look at the prequels as: we know Anakin becomes Vader, so not much is a surprise, also, Palpatine is so not looking suspicious at all. Yes, everything is predictable because we know everyone's fate 19 years before, but imagine if the prequels were released first and then the originals. One thing I'll agree with is that the execution of all 3 films (i will still include Episode 3 because it's still got its own issues, despite being the best of the trilogy) could've been done better. The cast was great and the overall final product was better than the Disney remake of the original.

I think the only good thing about Disney ruining Star Wars is that it gave fans more of an appreciation of the prequels, and they did get better over time even if it did infamously alter the masterpiece original trilogy by changing boba fetts voice or changing ghost anakin

I was disappointed with Phantom and, with the exception of a single viewing on its theatrical release, I have never since been able to watch it from beginning to end (though I have tried). I then found something better to do halfway through Clones, having stepped out to have a quick cigarette, spotted some friends, and joined them for a drink at a pub. I did, at a much later date, see it in its entirety but, to this day, I have still not seen Revenge.
As long as I am never forced to watch the prequels I'll be a happy person. If someone should ever decide to release the untainted original trilogy, I'll be even happier.

Honestly, I feel like the prequels get way more hate than they deserve and are very misunderstood for all of the reasons that make them great to me personally. First off, the politics in them are not boring to me, nor are they pointless, and I was 8 years old when I first started watching and understanding these films and I saw the original 3 films 2 years before I saw The Phantom Menace in theatres with my entire family, and they serve to show just how corrupted and decadent the Old Republic's leadership has become, as well as the Old Republic itself and literally show us how it will inevitably transform into The Empire. This serves the major theme of the entire prequel trilogy in that greed, corruption, and fear of loss are the inevitable death of democracy, freedom, and humanity in general. As for the portrayal of Anakin by George Lucas, I absolutely love it. George Lucas was trying, and I believe succeeded with flying colors, to portray a person that is so plagued with fear of loss that he seeks absolute power to control that very thing from happening to him which, both ironically and tragically, inevitably lead to the very things that he feared happening most, both to the ones that he loved, to the Old Republic's fall, and to his own humanity. The very things that lead to Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side are also what lead to to the fall of the Old Republic, which are greed in Anakin's horribly misguided lust for power, his impulsive anger and hatred, and his fear of loss of what he most cherishes in the galaxy. If you pay even the remotest of attention to these 3 films you will notice those very same parallels take part in every aspect of the Old Republic as well, as Palpatine, who is truly Darth Sidious, himself says in Episode 1 The Phantom Menace that there is no stability, there is only politics and that the senate is full of greedy, squabbling delegates that have no interest in the common good of the very people that they govern and that they should be leading for their sake. This serves as both a critique and dire warning by George Lucas of both what political leaders and figures in positions of power should be, to serve the people and do what is right for them, and what not to be, which is to be self - serving and indifferent to the plight of the common man and the many struggles that they face both due to these self - serving acts of sheer greed and complete, apathetic indifference. George Lucas also shows through these 3 films how a scenario like this would and has gone down in the past and future in our own world by showing how the worst possible outcome of people in positions of power using their sheer greed, corruption through their own self - serving natures and interests, and their own fear of losing everything that they stole and owe to the common man that they acquired from the angle of a galaxy far, far away in The Old Republic's leadership and from it's own split off corporate factions that form the C.I.S., or Confederacy of Independent Star Systems, which themselves are composed of the Trade Federation, The Techno Union Army, and the Banking Clan, who are the true villains of the prequel films whose bickering and squabbling with each other over territorial and economic rights through trade routes to multiple star systems and planets allow an even greater evil to rise to power in Darth Sidious, who disguises himself until Episode 3 Revenge Of The Sith as Palpatine, who ends up using these waring factions' greedy, corrupted fear of losing their power and influence over the galaxy to, ironically, unify them under one banner that ends up becoming The Empire. This to me serves as George Lucas's urgent warning to us the audience of what unchecked capitalism and political divide, or just any form of government that follows this same train of thought, does to democracy and how it inevitably leads to tyranny and oppression if no one in a position of power to do something about it or if we don't care and help each other as individuals. Palpatine, or Darth Sidious, also masterfully manipulates the majority of the masses of both the warring factions of The Old Republic's fears of loss of stability and desire for protection, who are fed up with the sheer greed, corruption, and constant warfare that their corrupted leaders have brought onto them, in order to further his own goals of absolute power and control over the entire galaxy through the very means that he swore he would use to prevent such an outcome from ever happening, knowing that the peoples' fear of losing their own financial stability and their own semblance of power in the galaxy and their lack of concern for anyone other than those whom they personally knew would make them completely willing to sacrifice the very concept of freedom and democracy in general in order to obtain it, a lesson to us from George Lucas of what our very own democracy will come to when we value these things over our own personal freedoms and each other's. This ties back to Anakin Skywalker's own demise and fall to the dark side as well, as he, being a former slave himself on Tatooine in the Outer Rim, knows what it's like to have no power or control over the events of his life and the helplessness that he surely must have felt during this outcome and this breeds the fear in him of ever having to experience something like that ever again, which boils over to his love life with Padme Amidala as well and, rather than through honest, open communication with her about his fears and using democracy and freedom with her to overcome these inner conflicts of his, seeks instead absolute power and control over death that Darth Sidious claims that the dark side can provide him with, in order to prevent such a thing from ever happening again to Padme what happened to his own mother and also for his own selfish reasons, which, both ironically and tragically, leads to the series of events that lead not only to Padme's death but that also lead himself to becoming horribly scarred and barely clinging on to life after his duel with Obi Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, both literally and metaphorically, becoming both a metaphorical and literal slave once again in a life support system with that iconic mask that Darth Sidious provides him as Darth Vader, with only his hatred of both others and himself keeping him alive, which only echoes the, in context, ominous words that Yoda warned him of in Episode 1 The Phantom Menace in that fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and that hate inevitably leads to suffering, which end up proven true for both Anakin Skywalker and the galaxy that he willingly, due to his selfish fear of loss of not only Padme but of power over his own destiny, anger turned to hate over his own helplessness in not being able to prevent these things from coming into fruition, and the inevitable suffering that he tragically brought onto not only himself but also the rest of the galaxy as well, bringing with him and it an era of darkness and oppression that he, ironically, so desperately sought to prevent until finally being redeemed through his son Luke Skywalker later on. This is the general takeaway that I get from all 3 of the Prequels that George Lucas clearly intended and I unironically love them to this very day. Thank you to anyone who listened to my entire statement of why I love the prequels of Star Wars and just Star Wars in general and may the force be with you all.

The prequel trilogy is awesome. As much as I love the OT, the galaxy never felt as big and full of life as it does in the prequels. And the war is much larger in scale. All the lightsaber duels are cool & fun. The politics are not boring, each scene is only a few minutes long & there's only a few of them, and it adds to the worldbuilding. Thanks to CGI innovations, we get to see the kinds of aliens & battles that could never have been depicted in the originals.
I'm tired of people whining about silly characters or "bad" dialogue or digital backdrops, as if you couldn't point to goofy characters or creatures, awkward dialogue, & obviously fake matte paintings in the OT. Many of the criticisms of the PT would apply to the OT. If the prequels are bad movies for particular reasons, the originals are also bad movies for some of the same or analogous reasons. The real difference? The whiners grew up with the OT but not the PT. They have childhood nostalgia for one but not the other. If these same people were adults when the OT came out they would've been on the side of the critics at the time who trashed the films. If they had grown up with the prequels, they would've loved them & have that same nostalgia for them. The prequels didn't ruin Star Wars, as many like to claim, but they enriched it. If you want to complain about a trilogy ruining Star Wars, there's a whole sequel trilogy that systematically undermines all the accomplishments & character arcs our beloved heroes worked hard for (New Republic? Failed. New Jedi Order? Failed. Defeat the Empire & kill Palpatine? Failed. Luke is vindicated in his belief that even the worst people can be redeemed? Now he's an attempted nephew murderer because of a bad dream. Han learns to care about others & fight for something bigger than himself, and also wins the girl? Now they're divorced & he went back to his loner life of smuggling. Etc.), only to give all the achievements to a Mary Sue protagonist with no personality who is the Emperor's own granddaughter. Now that's bad Star Wars. The prequels are intricately crafted masterpieces compared to those, and on their own they're pretty great too.

Better than I remember? No. Better than the recent sequels? Absolutely! The prequels are not necessarily bad; they're just not great. Too much tension-halting exposition.
