Star Wars Revenge of the Sith: An Amazing End to the Prequel Trilogy?

  • To put it mildly, the Star Wars prequel trilogy was divisive. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith was hyped up as the entry into the saga that would finally redeem the trilogy, as it would depict Anakin Skywalker’s seduction to the dark side and eventual transformation into Darth Vader. It was the first Star Wars movie to be given a PG-13 rating, as George Lucas and his crew promised that this was a much darker, more adult Star Wars tale than the rest of the prequel trilogy. Lucas was certainly right, with Revenge of the Sith ending the series on a dark, foreboding note, and to many, it remains a highlight of the prequel trilogy. Does that mean it ranks up there with the original films? That’s something we dig into in this episode of Revisited, written by Eric Walkuski, edited by Juan Jimenez and narrated by Shawn Knippelberg.
Where do you think Revenge of the Sith belongs in the Star Wars pantheon? Let us know in the comments!

Hayden Christensen is a fine enough actor, given a decent script. 'Life as a House' and 'Shattered Glass' are just two films he did around the same time as 'Revenge...', and he was excellent in both. Your critique seems to be focused more on the writing, directing, and with what the characters were allowed, than with the actor. Frankly, the original three Star Wars movies are still better than anything that's come after. Just my opinion.

I think they treated Star Wars as a series of events beyond the Skywalkers. As if they really studied history and got from behind the "Great Man or Men" beliefs that a lot of Americans embrace. It made for a much more dynamic universe. It was a galaxy made up of millions of sentient based planets. They are at least thousands of stories. Lucas threw out much of the EU because he did not consider it "canon". The only thing I disliked about the EU were the Yuzhan Vong who were all powerful one book and were almost at the level of the Three Stooges in another book. I would hazard a guess that any number of EU stories would be far better than the sequels we got. Just go with Luke, Leia and Han as they developed in the EU would have been great. Develop a new generation of heroes naturally instead of trying to do an artificial hero arc with REYYYYYY as Finn would put it. LOL @@white-dragon4424

Yes, Jar Jar's antics can be wearing, but I have no trouble with anything else. I like Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen's acting. They are both immature (the character) and so the awkwardness of the romance makes sense to me-especially with Padme being older. I'm not even sure if Revenge of the Sith is my favourite of the trilogy. I have fond memories of The Phantom Menace-and I was already well into my 20s when it came out (I think I was 24)

  • @SJHFoto
    @SJHFoto 8 месяцев назад

Actually, I think the one thing I didn't like in Revenge of the Sith was how obvious things were. In my head canon, I imagined that there would be a plot twist. The whole premise of clones intrigued me-I thought that Palpatine was Sidious' unwitting clone. That would explain why the Jedi never sensed evil from him. And so, he would be quietly killed, and Sidious would take his place. It would have been a great twist since as longtime fans, we "knew" that Palpatine was Sidious. Some clever twist like that would have been welcome. Since that didn't happen, we basically had a movie where we knew at least the general beats of it going in.
I also liked the novelization where Palpatine hints of an affair between Padme and Obi-Wan. Frankly, I think it would take something like that for Anakin to turn on his best friend (the other Jedi he never cared for so I could see that)

First two prequels did somewhat disappoint but not as lunatics say, simply the expectations were unreal and too high, but Revenge of the Sith is an epic space opera, objectively only Empire Strikes Back stands above it. It is Shakespearean, it is fun, it is tragic, it is exciting, it is epic! The music is the synthesis of all the best themes John Williams produced for Star Wars. it is the definitive, well-deserved end of the Star Wars, all that came after is NOT Star Wars.

Thank you for saying that Ewan McGregor was an excellent choice to play a young Obi-Wan, I have always loved his portrayal of the character and also him as an actor. I don’t think he gets enough respect for that. He hit the nail squarely on the head with his interpretation of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anyone else would have likely ruined it for me, but he was excellent, as per usual in any movie he’s in. Kudos to Ewan McGregor! I have many mixed feelings about the prequel trilogy, but hey: 1. It’s better than the travesty that is the sequel trilogy (ALL THREE MOVIES suck so hard, it’d take me a 400 page novel to explain why! But they all suck in their own way, plus they switched visions and directions halfway through, and that just made J.J. Abrams vision that much more FUCKED and whatnot……. I do like Rian Johnson, or however his name was misspelled by his parents… I LOVED Looper personally, but I hated his Star Wars movie…..anyway…) 2: it’s got Ewan McGregor and others like Palpatine and don’t forget Natalie Portman pouring their hearts and souls into these movies…. There were perfectly well done performances all around, but my personal favorite was Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan… and sure… Jar Jar basically made Palpatine Emperor during a Senate meeting… so FUCK Jar Jar. Period… and Haden was very creepy and whiny…. I wish we had seen these movies without Haden. He wasn’t the worst choice, but he did a shitty job… anyway, Obi-Wan was brilliant in these movies, despite their many flaws.

The prequel movies are also way more committed to true SW cinimetogrophy, as it has it's own extremely unique characteristics (only true SW fans will know what I'm talking about) and the Prequels delivered on those at least. I truly feel that only real old SW fans (I'm 45 - old enough to remember seeing Return Of The Jedi in theaters for the first time) appreciate the Prequels. Everyone else can kiss off.

I loved the prequels during their releases, a decade later I watched too many YT vids tearing the movies apart which made me dislike them somewhat despite loving clone wars 2D and 3D series. Now though I love the prequels as much if not even a little more than the originals. And thanks to Filion for making Star Wars awesome with Rebels and Ahsoka, Filion takes what is best from Star Wars Legends/Extended Universe and the Prequels into something new and better. Rebels is best Star Wars, if nothing else because the Villains are stronger and smarter than the Rebels and the Rebels need cunning to win.

It is so ridiculous.... Star Wars at its base is all about politics. So the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and the Revenge of the Sith went in heavily on the politics. My only gripes were that in Phantom Menace Anakin was played to be too young and they did not flesh out the other masters enough. Dooku and Maul should have had bigger parts and we needed to know more about Qui Gon not dancing along with the other Jedi Masters. The Jedi Masters were pretty uptight and not nice people in tolerating enslavement and insisting upon celibacy that has ruined more sects in the long run rather than helping them endure.

Yoda’s fighting style is fantastic. He is very small so clearly he should be all speed and less power. And his greatest strength is that he cannot be pinned down. Also the fact that he uses a crutch then can fight like this is an interesting contrast. Maybe he is in great pain but he endured it for the fight. Maybe it is just an act that he uses the crutch. Who knows. Some of the haters say that it should have been a battle of the use of the force. Imagine five minutes of two people waving their hands at each other. Ahhhhh no thank you. This looks great and makes sense and interesting. The only weird part is that Yoda is knocked down once and he literally crawls away in shameful defeat completely uninjured and then chooses to go into exile and let the Sith rule the universe. Ahhhhhh what?!?!?!?!

You look at what Disney did to Star Wars, and you realize what a masterpiece this was, in comparison.
Also, I was just a young kid when the originals came out. I was a young adult watching the prequels, so that became my main nostalgic interest. So, it really depends on age sometimes, what you like better. But the next gen of kids I don't think even bothered with the sequels, and I wouldn't blame them. They were terrible! If only George did the sequels 'before' handing the reigns to Disney. At the very least we could have had the three main characters come together and get slaughtered off to push Ma Rey Sue name stealer.

ROTS suffers from the same tragedy as all three trilogy endings,...had potential, but just missed the mark.
Turning Anakin into a youngling slayer just ruins his redemption in ROTJ plus his whole turn just changes Vader from the coolest villain in cinematic history into one of the most gullible characters in cinematic history.
Best of the prequels? Sure,...but that's not really much of a compliment. 😂

This is the movie that killed the prequel trilogy for me. Not that the 2 before were better but I hoped Lucas knew what he was doing and this movie will deliver a big surprise that will make all worthwhile - it did not. It was as bad as the 2 others, even maybe more.
I remember watching the opening scene and feeling it was a video game. At exactly the same time, BSG, with a budget 1% the size of this movie, delivered space battles that looked and felt 10 times more real and exciting. This movie was a huge disappointment.

The problems were, as they came out it was cool to see a new Star Wars movie, but the stories were just not engaging, characters and plots were horribly written, and the expectations from the original trilogy just set these up to fail. No matter what George were to do, they wouldnt hold up to them, so he went all in on what HE wanted to do which ended up being on the lower side of mixed results. He shouldve had other people write with him.
I still enjoy watching these every once i awhile...if only to think of what couldve been and/or just turn my brain of and watch a Star Wars movie (that i havent watched a million times). No matter what unfortunately, this being the best of the worst isnt saying much.

The prequels were good spectacles - fast paced/never boring, decent storylines & very good action. The ultimate issue is that they lacked heart and warmth.
I also wasn't impressed with natalie portman and hayden christensen. I think Liam Neeson was by far the best actor/character in the trilogy. The trilogy had two great villains - Darth Maul & Dooku, and they were killed off before we knew them.

    • @imawesomeyourenot

@@dougmasters4579 Honestly, the worst part of all the sequels (prequels), was that George was surrounded "yes men", and no one that would seriously question him. Hard for me to believe that none of the actors wouldve said at any point, "George, this part doesnt make sense for the character...", or no one spoke up and said "but George, why are they doing this when they already did that?" lol.
The fact that they (any cast/crew) were just getting to be in a Star Wars movie, getting to be part of the legacy (good or not), and a massive payday also, im guessing wouldve figured into all that. I probably wouldntve said much myself lol.
And idk, Liam was ok, at least somewhat believable as a Jedi master. But even then, his characters reactions/responses/and motivations were too poorly written to be 'good'. Even a great actor can only do so much. Hell, Portman is a decent enough actor and had been before and since these, her character was written too stiff and lacked real...depth (like most of the characters in these). Hayden, was decent enough as well given the material, but him being a "new face" and unseasoned actor shows through too much, his line delivery and acting were just too much for the character. Overacted in a fashion i guess.
Ewan McGregor easily the best actor of the bunch even still had little to work with, although i think he at least understood the character he was playing as well as the relationship that George was trying to write. They all had (minus a few) some character backstory to follow from the previous movies, but again George just didnt know what he was setting out to do, and had little to no push back from anyone. These movies/stories couldve been so much more....with so much less. Maul, Dooku, and Quai Gon Jinn shouldve never been written in then killed so easily and quickly. Sadly they were all used as disposable story beats instead of major plot points, with almost no "fleshing out" at all.
I dont hate them like even remotely like everyone thinks is so necessary to do, and (obviously) i could criticize them all day, and i def have to turn the "but wait..." part of my brain off when i watch these lol. Still fun, but poor execution considering the amount of excess everything within each movie.
As you said though, "the prequels were good spectacles", no disagreement here. I still remember the sheer excitement of the theater experience for each of these very fondly.

@@imawesomeyourenot Lucas made it clear from the outset that these were his films and no one could interfere with his vision. It's obvious he needed to bring in others to write a proper script with real dialogue, and direct the actors through their performance, and also coach them through all the green screen scenes that would've confused the actors no end.
As it is, he elected to do none of this, and thus, for me at least, the prequels feel cold and lack real emotion. That means all those amazing action scenes, and all those fantastic worlds, are rendered worthless without a human foundation on which to build the story.
I liked the prequels a lot when they came out in the theatre & I bought them when they first came out on dvd. However, I haven't watched them since then, except bits and pieces on TV. I don't come back to them not because they're bad films, but because they don't have a Luke, Han or Leia to get invested into. That's why I go back to the originals - the characters first.
Had Lucas spent more time on his characters and script, the prequels would've been good films.
