    I recently found your channel. I really appreciate your content. Your approach is just what I need, practical, real life, with many of the aspects that I hope to have when we buy a house. My grandson and I watch when it's time to wind down for the night. We are in Virginia, in an apartment for now. I really miss my garden in KY. Miss having tomatoes, and the work to achieve my own produce. It was all on a very small scale. Thank you sir, also for the Bible verses...every time, it makes me smile. God bless you, your family, and all your hard work.

    Wood chips are a very good addition to keep weeds down and keep moist ground. Old tomatoes and any pests are a real treat for the hens. Great video. Best success with your farm stand! 🍅

    Hi, Family Dad. I have that exact same tool, and I love it. Mine was a gift from my brother, so I tried to help you out by asking him where he got it. He said he got it at an estate sale. Looks like they can only be had second hand (just kidding, of course). I'm going to keep looking for a place to get them, and when I find one, I'll report it to you.

    I made tomato cages out of recycled spindles from rebuilding our back porch, and reused the nails and screws too! You must have a good plan to keep that grass from growing back, especially when you bring in the water. You need some patches on those pants! ;-) I can't wait to see it all in full production.

    Not quite on the determinate and indeterminate of tomatoes. The majority you find are indeterminate. Indeterminate tomatoes grow and fruit until they are killed by frost. So they can grow indefinitly if frost can't kill them as well as growing to massive heights. Determinate tomatoes cap off their growth at around 4 feet and are bushier. They pretty much grow one set of fruit then die off. They do not keep growing and fruiting through the season.

    The little tiller tool used to come as a free bonus when you bought the garden claw that used to be advertised on tv all the time.

    Not a hand tool but, the Garden Weasel Claw is close to the same tool. Then you could do the entire row standing up and then plant. save the back and knees :)

    Don’t forget it’s important to stick to a good watering regimen because uneven watering will result in splitting fruit 😁

      The Niagara Falls Garage Gardener very good point. Also, deep watering because tomatoes can put down deep roots.

    Just found you through MiGardener. Another great gardening RUclips channel. Just curious what part of Michigan you are in. I'm in the upper Thumb area. we are dying for some rain. All the rain the state has been getting has either gone north into the Lake or south along the I-69 corridor.

    Ace 55 Tomato is a determinate-type variety producing large, deep red fruit with low acid content, valued it for being among the first open pollinated, multiple disease resistant tomatoes.

    Use shredded straw for mulch around the tomato’s you’ll be amazed how long it
    Keeps the soil moist vs not having it i put straw in a trash
    Can and take the weed wacker to it to shred it...also the elastic cord you can buy at Walmart in the craft section is great for tying tomato’s up because it will never dig in or pinch the stem it just stretches

    Indeterminate grow to a large size vine, determinate to a bush size. When planting it's best to pick off the lower leaves and bury part of the stem, that encourages root growth along the buried stem. Tomatoes should be watered from below not wetting the leaves. Wet leaves encourages fungal growth and disease.

    I always support my tomatoes, how ever they want to live I'll support that choice.
    Btw you were holding a baby tomato i one hand and telling us that they are gonna die, not very nice for that tiny tomato to know! You could have been abit more considerate and put it down while telling us :-)
    I agree about not using tomato cages, we let them freerange aswell.
    Good video, can't wait to see them grow :-)

    and you can plant much much closer personally on our farm we do 14 inches apart on each side 24 inches eats up acerage and more or less waists water for the future.

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  6 лет назад +1

      I agree, generally in our home garden I have planted as close as 18 inches apart and 24" between rows so at least I can squeeze down the rows to harvest.

    • @SSLFamilyDad

      going to try a simple fishing line fence around the perimeter with ribbons tied on, so far they have just walked by everything and not eaten a thing!

    • @steveonyourside
      @steveonyourside 6 лет назад

      Awesome Video once again!. Great Idea using fishing line and sparkly ribbon but what about the dangers in the air, birds! You might want to make a homemade scarecrow to put in your field. Some farmers use those loud canons that make a gun shot every few minutes but who wants to listen to that LOL. I look forward to all your videos please keep them coming!.

      Jack black the worm wraps around the soft stem of the plant and cuts it. With a hard stick against the stem of the plant, it can't.

    really dropped the ball on the determinate vs indeterminate explanation

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  6 лет назад +1

      You make want to look that up - determinate = grows to a specific height, normally shorter, sets fruit generally all at once and then dies off. Indeterminate will grow very tall and are only killed off when it frosts, if grow indoors will live indefinitely. how was that wrong again?

    • @wespeanut06
      @wespeanut06 6 лет назад +3

      SSLFamilyDad you're right there but in the video you explained that being determinant means it is annual. Determinant means it is a bush and is a determined height vs indeterminate being a vine with no specified length/height. Also most varieties are indeterminate not determinant. Good video just not quite right on some of the tips and info. Also tomatoes unless they are a hybrid bred specifically for it will not fruit in the hot hot summer heat of the subtropics or tropics.
