I think with Arthur it’s kinda a thin line… at least in the beginning of the game, Arthur is pretty ignorant to racism, Hosea tells Arthur about how the natives were screwed over of land, and Lenny also tell Arthur about how he would be discriminated for hanging with with. Arthur also says “I hate everyone the same” which I think he means he doesn’t care what anyone is in terms of skin color he’s willing to kill or steal from you. But as the game progresses I think Arthur learns more and more about the realities of the world and he matures a whole lot, he even risks his life multiple times to help out the native Americans. He also helps out those Mexican captives in st denis. So I think Arthur is an honest ignorant and learns from his mistakes and ignorance over time. But with his short time alive he helped the natives as much as he could even if it was doomed and was very close to Lenny

Rockstar deliberately toned down the racism and made in game society far less racist than 1890s American society irl, like no Jim Crow and racial segregation in game, and much friendlier racial relations than real world, to not make the game offensive

You give this game as much thought as me and I like the way your brain thinks on the fly - this is definitely not scripted -I'm sure its on some kind of outline - but this is fluid stuff - cerebral bro. However, starting Arthur out as a discriminative person and making choices throughout the game to make him less so, and see him grow is a cool concept.

I honestly think Dutch should be near the top of this list, sure he may have related with some of the struggles of the Natives, but the main reason he got involved with them in both games was because he saw them as vulnerable and naive, making them easily exploited for his personal gain. He never actually cared about them.
