I think both are amazing for completely different reasons. The music video for the second version is what really makes it for me -- that the happy tone with the snarky lyrics. This one is rougher, more f*ck you.
I like this version a WHOLE lot better than the Ariana one.

My advice for this one... Speed it up to 1.25! I did and it's ten times better. I still prefer the version with Ariana but speeding this one up makes it a much closer competition lol

I like this song 3744958x more than the new one! I mean, Priscilla did co-write the song, she knew what she was doing as far as creative integrity. The Ariana version is just pop mish-mush.

Actually, Mika rearranged himself when he sang it with Ariana...he wanted it to be closer with his other single "Grace Kelly"...because he wanted it to sell more because at this time pop-ier songs were doing well...hence the faster, upbeat music, no vulgar language, and Ariana Grande's pop voice

It's funny because when I first listened the Popular Song, it was Ariana's version and I love it, then I listened to Priscilla's version and thought "ahn... meh", but again I listened the two versions and now I can't stand Ariana's hahaha

Both versions are great... This one is good because i think it has that original flare but i think i do like the one with Ariana better because it's more up-beat and happy sounding but i guess that's just me.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Mika was born in Lebanon, spent high school in Paris and then moved to London: he is currently British. But he speaks perfect French and his first album was the #1 album of 2007 in France.

I like the song but I don't like the lazy "you're a failure because you're working a minimum wage job as an adult" thing. Not everybody is lucky enough to end up in a well paid job. Mental health and circumstance can get in the way. Low paid job does not equal loser.

the Grande version is nice because she got a seriously nice voice, but this one really has more feeling put into it. The sing-song voices, the extra verse that means a lot, and it does sound better at this tempo ^_^
First time I've heard this original version! It does have more feeling. You'd get the message immediately. With the newer version, it's more on the pop side so the 'soul' of the music got kind of stripped off. Love both of them tho. The newer one is catchier, this one give off more feels. :)
Yes the chorus part is from Popular in Wicked :) Mika mentioned it in the Track by Track video of Popular Song. He got permission from the songwriter and played a bit with the original one.

umm no. The original song from Wicked is written by Stephan Schwartz, who composed the whole musical. He also collaborated with both versions of Mika's song. Priscilla and Mika wrote their own respective verses, and someone changed it a bit for when Ariana sang it to censor it.

There should be a version with both Priscilla and Ariana. It can easily be done, as she doesn't need to swear. And its not like Ariana hasn't worked with rapped before (Big Sean and Mac Miller).

I love Priscilla Renea and miss her music, but this sounds like it was purposely slowed down on some editing software, and it is so boring compared to the Ariana version. This seems like it was done in one take for funsies.

HOW in the WORLD do people prefer this over Ariana Grande's version, Mika and Priscilla's voices and styles don't even match. Just because im a big Ariana Grande fan doesnt mean i love her version better because Ariana sings it, but Priscilla's style just doesn't fit this song OR Mika's voice.

This is so much fucking better. :/ Mika should have had some guts and released this. Then again, his music has turned from beautifully crafted pop with a glam/orchestral edge to a horribly overproduced, loud and flat mess with no poetry or double meanings.
“Elle Me Dit” and the first released version of “Make You Happy” were so beautiful, as was “The Origin of Love”. But the rest of the album… D:
this is the original version, it's not meant to have high notes. The other one was altered for ariana, as she has a higher vocal range, and younger fans so it was sped up and the swear words were taken out. And this is just my opinion but personally, I like this one better as it is less fast and poppy, and I think considering it has pretty much exactly the same words, it still sends a message. But that's just what I think, everybody deserves their own opinion and I accept yours. Fair enough :)

'Don't mess with Ari's songs' ?? What are you talking about? This song was written by Mika and Priscilla, they sing it together and this exact version is on Mika's album. This isn't Ariana's song, if anything she's just a vocal guest for a single release to make it sound a bit more commercial and to make it more suitable for American audience.
B-b-but... half of Ariana's version is just repeating itself.. And this actually has real instruments in it. Whenever I listen to Ariana's version I hear disgusting weird auto-tuning. And I know artists use it to some extent, but Ariana's is just, ugh .And I'm not saying in all of her songs she sounds awful. I still think she's an awesome vocalist.

I prefer the new version with Ariana. I think Ariana is a fantastic pop singer, and I NEVER say that. This version is good, I just think the more upbeat tempo, larger vocal range, and playful feel just make this song a lot better, albeit downplaying the message.

What do you mean? This is the original ''mika'' version of the Wicked song ''Popular'' The only thing Mika took from that song is the tune, you know when they say ''Popular, I know about popular'' and I think one or two sentences :) I'm not so good at explaining.. :) haha

I love this version much more than the other version that MIKA sang with Ariana. No offense, it's just about different taste of music. But I think this version suits MIKA the most, because this is his style.
Okay, yes, it was inspired heavily by Wicked, but he did not sample it. You can't sample a Broadway production. That is Mika singing that chorus. Not Kristen Chenoweth or any other woman that has ever sang that line.
I don't like how you phrased it "got twisted by Ariana" because he approached her to redo the song, and it was his decision. They are two completely different songs, but they are both amazing in their own right.
actually Ariana's version ruined the original and there's legit only 2 cuss words in it if you can't handle that then you need to leave this sends the same message as the other one maybe even a better message
Have you actually heard/read the lyrics? The only words that are the same as from Wicked is 'popular' and 'lala lala's'. I know this song samples the chorus from Wicked's Popular, but this doesn't mean it's some kind of cover.
