    I want to see a series about Linux, or even a whole channel. Linux really needs some love beyond throwing Tux in as an element in b-roll. Heck, Linus hasn't geeked out over the fact that Linux was originally created by another Linus (clones perhaps?) Its not like the viewers of LTT, CSF and TQ are techies or anything ;)

    • @lyfeninja7264
      @lyfeninja7264 9 лет назад +2

      Trainguyrom Some are and some aren't. I'm not opposing the idea of a LinusLinuxTips (or what have you). I think it would be great actually. He has the public's eyes and ears, so they will notice. It would be great to see a boom in the FLOSS community. It would be nice to get someone that would put it into terms virtually anyone may understand too.
      Things such as: compare and contrast flavors; point out that it should be GNU/Linux (if not a much longer name - GNU did the largest portion, Linus just made a kernel, and a few others did some work); cover Desktop Environments and how to swap between them; explain how virtually every distro is the same, yet customized and how so; etc.

    • @lyfeninja7264
      @lyfeninja7264 9 лет назад

      ***** Didn't know. Thanks for the info. I don't really search for Linux stuff, more or less use Google and the Stack* network.. Will be looking for it now to Sub though.

    • @Trainguyrom
      @Trainguyrom 9 лет назад

      Tech Syndicate also has a Linux channel, but the more Linux-related media, the better. Linux is at a point where it can become a mainstream (for want of a better term) "product" without having it flop over due to poor usability or some fatal technical flaw. It just needs the media to push it out of the shadows and into the limelight. It will be a great day when the general public changes the battle from PC vs. Mac to PC vs. Mac vs. Linux, or even better, proprietary [OSes] vs. open source [OSes]
      Although, we would lose our security through obscurity, the vastly-improved support for Linux that would come through mainstream adaptation would be fantastic. Steam already has their end started, Humble Bundle requires Linux support for their Humble Indie Bundle, Android (and it's forks) is already in the majority of smart phones, and many governments and businesses are using Linux and other open source tools over proprietary solutions. It just needs the push of mainstream media talking about it to really launch Linux into the public's eye. Heck, Google would just have to throw the term "Linux" around publicly [I mean in their advertising and marketing] when talking about Android and ChromeOS and we'd see the masses looking into Linux as a possibility.

    A good intro to the subject Linus. Maybe the next related one could be RTOS vs OS, or processes, tasks and threads.
    Calling Android an OS is a bit of a stretch though, its generally refered to as a filesystem (full of services running on a modified Linux OS kernel). Apps run on a Java VM but are not really tasks, just a set of method callbacks.
    Liking the variety of content your making, keep it up!

    I don't think it's "multitasking" but here's a neat fact about Symbian - you know that hated "slow" and "featureless" os.
    When you were playing a game, and you exited the app it'd keep the game paused so you can come back to it. Even 10 days later. Even after the phone's been shut down and restarted it'd remeber your score and stuff... on a phone with 256MB of RAM. On Android, when I go to homescreen and return after 5 minutes the app restarts completely erasing any progress... on a phone with 3GB of RAM... 12x more...

    • @Utsavbajra
      @Utsavbajra 9 лет назад +6

      When you're playing a game , all of your current game data is stored on RAM. But when you close the game (in Symbian), the game is automatically programmed to transfer the game data onto your phone memory. So even if you had shut down your phone, it would still have your game data intact. In case of Android, most games are not programmed to transfer game data to the phone memory once the game closes.
      The amount of RAM is irrelevant here.

    • @alio2269
      @alio2269 9 лет назад

      Most games these days ask you to back up to cloud so that it won't stress your memory. That's why it doesn't need to keep working because either your Google or Facebook has saved it to their data

    • @Matticitt
      @Matticitt 9 лет назад

      RobinHood East cloud saves are irrelevant while I'm playing a particular level. Untill you finish it/reach a checkpoint the game is not save and the progress is lost.

    • @Matticitt
      @Matticitt 9 лет назад

      Utsavbajra Yes, I know that. But the problem is that even when the game isn't closed, just minimalized, it stays that way in Symbian pretty much forever but most Android phones have some weird time/ammount limit which means when you come back to play your game even after couple of minutes it will reload the game even though there's still gigabytes of RAM left to keep it running.

    • @kyanhluong

    I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
    Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
    There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

      Dojan5 Only in Microsoft made coffee machines. You can also share your coffee with only 1 of your family members and only if you are family with them for more than 15 days.

      Dojan5 Nope the EA ones comes with only the coffee machine, you have to buy the power cords, the filters, the display and the buttons seperately.
