I've seen other videos on helix coils and the last step was to knock out the small hook on the end of the coil but I didn't see you do this at the end of the installation of the helix coil.
i read many comments on how he should have tapped the hole by turning and then back, he did say it was an alum head which for sure is very soft compared to steel, i myself thought he was going to deep with the new threads, but this video does gives people the idea how to fix a bad hole, heli coil
That was a great video. When tapping the bolt hole, I've noticed that the thread chips will break into smaller pieces if you unthread about a quarter turn for every turn that you thread the tap in. It results in a stronger threading and less stress on the cut. Also, you'' be able to tap the hole with less effort
this video gave me Forest whitaker eye. there is some mildly funny stuff like the bit not staying in and for the love of God use oil then follow proper procedure to use the tap. do not run the tap straight through it can cause issues and not cut correctly. That said Kudos for have a RUclips channel and trying to help people it is more than i am doing

use cutting oil, WD40 spray will do, and each time you make a full turn clockwise do a half turn anti just to break the metal chips, just makes it a bit easier and less chance of error...but you did a good job anyway so I guess you have done it before!!
Thank you that was the best stripped bolt hole video I’ve seen so far. I stripped the bolt hole on my motorcycle valve cover and now I feel confident I can fix it. Thank you again.
I rarely comment on videos, but good job, and thank you! I'll rethread one head bolt on my motor that got stripped while I was using a torque wrench as well.
When tapping it's best to turn forward a full turn then back half a turn to "break the chip" of the threads that you're cutting. By simply running it straight through you put a lot of stress on your tap, and removing a broken tap turns a bad day into a shitty day.
Nah - that's easy, you just need to get one of those drill bits that can cut a beautifully straight core through a little chunk of hardened steel with a splintered-off top. I forget the brand of those bits, but they're usually on the shelf next to the broken camshaft glue.
Very cool. Thanks for this video. Without this video, i would have probably had to make a second trip for the drill bit, but now I know to open the manual and look for the size drill bit I need. Also, the bolt measuring gauge is a neat item to have around.
You can use the wrench shown in the video, of course, but you'll have an easier time of it using (1) A 12-point socket and ratchet, (possibly with an extension); (2) The closed end of a combination wrench; OR (3) A die handle from a tap-and-die set. I prefer the latter, but you need lots of space to turn it, which you may not have in constricted areas. However, it provides you a means to evenly distribute the force (think of it as a large T-handle wrench).
Nice video. Just a note that on the insert tool has a collar with a grub screw which you can lower to the top of the insert. This acts as a stop so you don't put the insert in any deeper than you need to, which can easily be done. If it is too deep. in some applications, the bolt may only be caught on a couple of threads of the insert, which is not enough. Also, you need to break the tang at the bottom when it's inserted. Just take the tool out slightly, turn 90 degrees, and tap it with a hammer/wrench/heavy-ish object :-)

Jacob Curley - Im thinking if you want to use the threads cut by the tap it will have to be a bigger bolt, and it might be too thick to go through the rocker arm, in this case.. By inserting the correct thread helicoil into the tapped hole, you have the same conditions for the original bolt, before it got stripped out..
I currently need to rethread a hole in my brake caliper mounting bracket for the guide pin bolt, would this be a possible solution, considering the bolt opening is open ended?
Caliper mounting bracket guide pin has no (male) thread. It just slides in and out. If you are taking about the hole on top of the guide pin which is used to hold the piston unit, then yes the guide pin does have (female) threads. However, why not change the guide pin itself? you will be changing both at a time! Easy and most imp, safe!
my man, i just picked up a similar kit at McFaddendale's here in Vegas...i was informed we need to pop that tang end off before it's complete... not really?
+Ian Thompson you have to follow the directions on the kit. But usually you have to drill the hole bigger. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.
Great video. Learn something new every day. I didn't know there was such a thing as a Helicoil (to be used with a Tap). Just when I start to think I know a lot ;) Thanks for the enlightenment.
Great job what about the thread in a crankshaft the problem is the engine is still in the car radiator is removed for more room but still hard because if of air con condenser
Sounds tight. It also sounds like one of those jobs where I would actually have to be there to see exactly what’s going on. So I cannot advise anything over the internet without seeing the whole situation. I greatly appreciate your and also thanks for watching.
The coil insert is the new threads. If the application allows you to put in a bigger gauge bolt then I do not see why not. Just be careful. Most of the time you cannot go to a thicker gauge bolt .
Majority of the time the hole is drilled slightly larger then the original size and then traced with the new threads. Because it would most likely be to tight if it was not drilled a little larger.
I had a hard time getting the flywheel off of my 50cc Chinese scooter. it seems the threads are messed up on the post that protrudes through the flywheel that the locking nut goes on. I'm not mechanically inclined can you suggest what to do?

I ha e even gone out an bought a helicoil kit now. The tensioner bolt side mounted for cam belt lost its thread and I really wanted a solution without change the lower half of the engine, and now I have one. Bummer though, to get access to it I have to use a right angled drill attachment doing a 8mm 1.25 helicoil. So first ever helicoil going to be tougher than most I recon. Ha ha
+James Barratt yeah that sucks. I hope it worked out. I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.
It did work out perfectly first time. Real easy system with flawless results. I didn't have to use a bolt chart either, as i measured the bolt with a tape measure and then measured the thread gap same procedure and just went for it. 8 x 1.25. Thanks to you and this video I fixed a cam belt tensioner and saved the engine. Ha ha
Got a question not about a hole with stripped threads. I want to know if you can tap a hole with 12Mx1.25 to 12Mx1.75 with just a tap and no heli coil?
NO. You'll end up with a nice smooth hole with no threads. There may be enough steel bits from the "threads" left to screw the bolt in but it will strip immediately.
Why not go to 12 x 1.5 instead? You will probably need a drill bit to keep the threads from being too deep/long and breaking. I would think it can work if done correctly. Or you can also go to an even higher size and creating new threads with a totally different bigger size, assuming you have the space to do the work and fit the bolt.
It looks like when you retap you are using the same diameter, but if the thread was stripped I don't understand how this is possible. Shouldn't you have to retap with the next size up in diameter since there shouldn't be enough material on the existing diameter to do the job properly?
handy man I think I understand, you tap the hole to the next size up but the insert screws in using the next size up, but the internal thread of the insert is the old size for the original bolt? Thanks
A few days ago I stripped transmission drain threads. I’m thinking to re-threads it but if I do that do i need a bigger bolt? I’m think the drain hole will be slightly bigger there for I need big bolt.

what about a stripped bolt hole in the rear differential? does the differential and drive shaft need to be pulled in order to heli coil it perfectly straight or can it be done on the car? also with the amount of torque it has will it hold up well?
magga619 Thanks for watching. I always say follow the directions of the manufacturer. But turning back every 1/4 inch is a good tip for people to follow.
That is standard practice for anyone cutting new threads. The purpose to backing it up frequently is to break the thread material (slivers of fine metal) so they release and come out through the relief slots cut into the tap or die. If you didn't, you'd soon lock up the tap/die with slivers and be unable to proceed.
around [10:10] you put coil inside. Why ? The thread is already done , so what is the point of putting the coil ? And does not the coil make the hole smaller ?
+Harnas31 the coil is the factory size thread pitch and diameter. When I made the new threads with the rethreading tool is for the coil to go into. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe.
2014 chev cruise and someone stripped out a valve cover bolt. M6 30 with E10 socket bolts. What would I drill and retap bolt hole with?, drill bit size and rethread size?
Good video. Im going to refer to it as I re-thread my crankshaft snout bolt hole. Only a 1/2 inch porttion at the beging of the hole is stripped. My bolt is 14mm with 1.50 pitch. I'm goimg to drill the 1/2 inch portion with a 14.5mm drill and them use a 14mm hand tap (plug type). Any opinion? Wont hold you to it if I screw up (lol). Also. are the coils necessary ? Been researching for couple of weeks, never done before, got to soon. Kia wants $800.00 bucks......not going to happen.
Hi there, I got a couple of questions. 1) why do impact guns do no harm to wheel nuts but yet can strip the threads of bolt holes? Where I live, mechanics use impact guns to fasten wheel nuts all the time. 2) Can tightening subframe bolts with an impact gun instead of a torque wrench cause the chassis' treads to be stripped? (I suspect this was what happened to my car, the handling is a little off now. An amateur foreman might have overtightened something).
Andrew Chan funny you say that. My wheel hub and lug nut are stripped from impact gun. I need to do this to wheel hub so I don’t have to pay $1,000+ to replace the wheel hub. Exactly why I watched this video! Hope it works!
I stripped 3 bolt holes' thread/groove while changing my transmission fluid accidentally by over torquing it. Fluids been dripping out slowly per day and what kind of HeliCoil, size of drill, and tap will I need? Also how deep will I need to drill a bigger hole?
You have to find out what size and pitch bolt you have, which I showed how to do that in this video. Than you have to find the right helicoil set and follow the directions that come with the helicoil set. It also states what size drill bit you need. As for how deep you have to go, I don't know. I personally do not go any deeper than the hole already is. These videos are tutorials only on how I do things in hopes that it helps someone out. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Please like, share and subscribe.
handy man do you have to use the drill bit before you use the tap? What'll happen if you just use the tap to create new threads w/o drill the hole first?
7150285 you always have to pre-drill the hole, and remember to keep straight. although you could size up with a slightly bigger tap and put a slightly larger bolt in it rather then using thread inserts. This would work if you have the room for a slighty larger bolt. EXAMPLE: if your striped hole was 1/4 X 20 tpi you could drill and tap using a 3/8 tap and 3/8 bolt
7150285 you would probably break the tap. Once that happens you will have a chunk of tap stuck in the hole that is impossible to remove, because you won't find a drill bit hard enough to drill it out. Whatever you are working on is now a boat anchor.
Nice video. Trying to learn. Is re-tapping the stripped bolt hole with the same size bolt as original and "re-setting" the mangled thread, not an option? If not, why?
Thanks. After watching your video, I learned about thread chasers and therefore I ordered one in the size I need. A brand new $20 Harbour Freight torque wrench failed me on its first use and caused me to strip a small bolt hole on my commercial mower. It is a non-critical bolt so I am going to experiment a bit. Thanks again.
Thanks for the vid! I was working on my Honda Shadow 1100 trying to put some insulated fiberglass wrap around my exhaust pipes, and on re-installation I stripped one of the bolt holes. With my engine being a lot bigger than a lawnmower, would this method still be viable? I'm thinking about a possible change in compression, and how big of a difference I could be looking at
I have done this method on cars for several different reasons. I only used a lawn mower for this video for demonstrating purposes. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Please like, share, and subscribe.
Thanks for commenting and watching. Here is a kit that has everything you need amzn.to/2jNblE1 . I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe.
Probably not. It may be difficult to find one that even was the correct size and/or thread pitch. Self-tapping bolts or screws are okay with soft materials (like wood); not so much with metal. Another issue is that taps have 3 or 4 vertical slots in them to transfer the waste material out as you're tapping (or cleaning up the threads) in a hole. That eliminates jamming the waste material down into the hole you're attempting to clean up. Spend the money and buy a thread-restoring set, which will have both metric and SAE taps and dies. Alternatively, you can buy a Helicoil kit. Watch a few videos here on RUclips to determine your options and the procedure you will need to follow to install one.
I am doing this job today on the same part on a ride on mower, i was installing a brand new head on my kohler courage and torqued the rocker stud to the spec. It got about 3/4 way there and then i felt it was not going to get there. Not what you want to feel on a new head.
The torque spec for my one is only 13.5 newton metres, lol it didn't take much, the repair all went well, i got a bit worried when the coil started getting a bit tight to turn in near the end but it got there. Thank you very much for your video, it gave me the confidence I needed to fix it.
Dean T - No, you drill just the length of the shaft of the bolt, measured from the top of the head of the bolt, going down.. If you have a really long drill bit, what if you kept on drilling and went through something that is no damaged down there?
I'm trying to fix my hole for my tension pulley bolt. How can I do that without removing the engine please help I got the tap and inserts and drill bit but I want to make sure I do it right without damaging the block.
+Fee Baby I don't know what your working on nor do I know what kind of room you have to work. So I can't really help you. But I can give you a tip. Some times the tip of the bolt gets boogered up and might only mess the first couple threads up in the bolt hole, so you might find out what the diameter and pitch of the bolt and chase the old threads as well as chasing the bolt threads or just get a new bolt. You might be able to do this especially if it's cast. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.
Well it's for my intake manifold and the bolts going through the fuel rail so it has to be a specific size... but it turns out after I got the helicoils that it had already been previously tapped and I just needed to freshen up the threads for the new one 😆 it must've came out when the fuel rail was removed some time back

Excellent vid. Thanks.
I’m here for this exact reason
my man, i just picked up a similar kit at McFaddendale's here in Vegas...i was informed we need to pop that tang end off before it's complete... not really?
Insane intro with heavy editing. Followed by entire video with no editing. Lol
Thanks for the help

Do you necessarily need to drill a bigger hole and add a helicoil? Or can you just re tap the same hole
Just when I start to think I know a lot ;) Thanks for the enlightenment.
lol , no problem. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.
Beautiful video. Clear and concise how it should be.
Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching.
When you tap it.. Can you put a bigger gauge bolt in?.. Is the coil just so you can fit the exact same bolt?..
The coil insert is the new threads. If the application allows you to put in a bigger gauge bolt then I do not see why not. Just be careful. Most of the time you cannot go to a thicker gauge bolt .
So when you drill the damaged threads out. The actual size of the hole doesn’t increase? So that the original bolt will fit like a glove?
Majority of the time the hole is drilled slightly larger then the original size and then traced with the new threads. Because it would most likely be to tight if it was not drilled a little larger.
There are also tangless inserts if you don't want to punch out the tang or leave it.
This was very helpful 🙌🏽

I had a hard time getting the flywheel off of my 50cc Chinese scooter. it seems the threads are messed up on the post that protrudes through the flywheel that the locking nut goes on. I'm not mechanically inclined can you suggest what to do?
Just found out that my trans mount has a stripped bolt hole.Explain to me why the coil gos in or mainly what purpouse it serves.
Morgan Meyers The coil becomes the new threads. Usually made of stainless steel.
Liked the Air raid siren in the background.
Haha, at that time I lived about a 1/4 mile from the firehouse. I didn’t even realize how loud it was because I was so use to the siren. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe.
I have a M16.5x1.50 bolt hole that I need to rethread what size should I use?
It looks like when you retap you are using the same diameter, but if the thread was stripped I don't understand how this is possible. Shouldn't you have to retap with the next size up in diameter since there shouldn't be enough material on the existing diameter to do the job properly?
It is being tapped to the next size up.
handy man I think I understand, you tap the hole to the next size up but the insert screws in using the next size up, but the internal thread of the insert is the old size for the original bolt? Thanks
Do i need a insert if im re threading a bleeder
A few days ago I stripped transmission drain threads. I’m thinking to re-threads it but if I do that do i need a bigger bolt? I’m think the drain hole will be slightly bigger there for I need big bolt.
They do sell these and here is the link
amzn.to/2R2eGCM I hope this helps. Just make sure you know what size it is , you can watch this video to help figure out the bolt size and thread pitch ruclips.net/video/0JammBOVZ8w/видео.html

I have a stripped transmission f bolt hole on the right side of the transmission. Any help would be nice i don't want to drop the transmission. . thanks
Fantastic! Thanks! 🎸😃
My bolt connecting the carb to the engine is stipped. Its a 3/8 bolt but i cant figure out how to do what you did.. Can you send a link with the kit and if my bolt is slipping in and out wont i need a bigger bolt after rethreading? (I have never done this before im just working on a lawn mower) thanks.
I am assuming the threads are fine and not coarse, if so here is the link for 3/8-24 inch thread repair kit.amzn.to/2chC6gq The directions will be written on back of the kit, also what size drill bit that you should use. I hope this helps. If you do not know what size thread pitch you have, then please feel free to check this video out ruclips.net/video/0JammBOVZ8w/видео.html . any tips for your bolt being a oil drip bolt on a dirt bike so no debris goes in while re threading?
Same size hole, or did u have to go make it bigger?
Can I do this on a cable tensioner bolt?
I just did this and my bolt doesn't go down All the way the rocker arm still had some play🤦🏿♂️ so I tried getting out the thread but it doesn't want to come out so I tried Retaping it out in snapped the thing that wholes the rocker arms set in place then I tried drilling it out and that snapped the drill bit inside 🤦🏿♂️ can't win I did rocker arm all the time but this one time the bolt just had to be stripped 🤷🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️🙏🏾
what about a stripped bolt hole in the rear differential? does the differential and drive shaft need to be pulled in order to heli coil it perfectly straight or can it be done on the car? also with the amount of torque it has will it hold up well?
if you are tapping something you want to last or using a smaller tap which can break more easily you should really turn back 1/4 turn every turn
magga619 Thanks for watching.
AND, ... you could break the tap itself, inside the job making it a really, REALLY SHITTY job to carry on with.
10 years later, I'm here to learn 🎉
V detailed, subscribed
around [10:10] you put coil inside.
Please like share and subscribe.
also guys youre supposed to break the install tab off the heli coil before installing the bolt..check other vids..
How do you do that?
2014 chev cruise and someone stripped out a valve cover bolt. M6 30 with E10 socket bolts. What would I drill and retap bolt hole with?, drill bit size and rethread size?
You can try this kit. It comes with everything you need including the drill bit amzn.to/3J0At4w

Does it work on metal like the Block ?
Hi there,
I got a couple of questions.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. handy man do you have to use the drill bit before you use the tap?
Whatever you are working on is now a boat anchor.
nice work you do on that bolt
+edecio castillo thank you I greatly appreciate your comment. Please like, share, and subscribe.
Can you do this on aluminum block?do you have spray wd-40 while you tapping so it doesn't get hot or no?
Yes depending on what you are doing. Yes you have to use oil while tapping, I know I did not in this video but you are supposed to
Nice video. Trying to learn. Is re-tapping the stripped bolt hole with the same size bolt as original and "re-setting" the mangled thread, not an option? If not, why?
You can try to chase the threads but they will most likely be weaker depending on the application. I hope this answered your question.
You rethread the same size or bigger?
why do you need to insert a coil? isn't the rethreader enough?
Thanks for the vid! I was working on my Honda Shadow 1100 trying to put some insulated fiberglass wrap around my exhaust pipes, and on re-installation I stripped one of the bolt holes. With my engine being a lot bigger than a lawnmower, would this method still be viable? I'm thinking about a possible change in compression, and how big of a difference I could be looking at
I have done this method on cars for several different reasons. I only used a lawn mower for this video for demonstrating purposes. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Please like, share, and subscribe.
I have a hole I'm trying to retap. The bolt size is M6-1. What drill bit and tap will I have to use to retap this hole???? Thank you in advance.
Thanks for commenting and watching. Here is a kit that has everything you need amzn.to/2jNblE1 . I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe.
Is it a tornado siren im hearing from the outside?
Will a self drilling bolt help restore minor thread damage if used like a tap?
Probably not. It may be difficult to find one that even was the correct size and/or thread pitch. Self-tapping bolts or screws are okay with soft materials (like wood); not so much with metal. Another issue is that taps have 3 or 4 vertical slots in them to transfer the waste material out as you're tapping (or cleaning up the threads) in a hole. That eliminates jamming the waste material down into the hole you're attempting to clean up. Spend the money and buy a thread-restoring set, which will have both metric and SAE taps and dies. Alternatively, you can buy a Helicoil kit. Watch a few videos here on RUclips to determine your options and the procedure you will need to follow to install one.
the bolt gauge where did you get it from and how can you do it without one of them?
Ebay or amazon sell them. thats where I bought mine
Your best bet is a thread pitch gauge and a caliper. The one used in the video only has common sizes.
I am doing this job today on the same part on a ride on mower, i was installing a brand new head on my kohler courage and torqued the rocker stud to the spec. It got about 3/4 way there and then i felt it was not going to get there. Not what you want to feel on a new head.
Yeah, that’s what happened too this one. I think the torque specifications are wrong
The torque spec for my one is only 13.5 newton metres, lol it didn't take much, the repair all went well, i got a bit worried when the coil started getting a bit tight to turn in near the end but it got there. Thank you very much for your video, it gave me the confidence I needed to fix it.
When drilling out the old thread do you not drill it all out untill the drill bottom out?
Dean T - No, you drill just the length of the shaft of the bolt, measured from the top of the head of the bolt, going down.. If you have a really long drill bit, what if you kept on drilling and went through something that is no damaged down there?
Can this method be used to rethread bmw wheel bolt hole?
Can I stack coils inside of one another if the hole is too big for my bolt
Honestly, I have never tried it. Couldn't you just get a bigger bolt?
Well it's for my intake manifold and the bolts going through the fuel rail so it has to be a specific size... but it turns out after I got the helicoils that it had already been previously tapped and I just needed to freshen up the threads for the new one 😆 it must've came out when the fuel rail was removed some time back
i have a oil drain hole stripped so i would need that little piece removed. how would i do that?
What's the difference between doing it this way and heat treating it
Are the coil size gonna be a factor??? Some kits have different coil size!! Great Vid too my guy
