It's the success of Gta 5 and its online that corrupted them. The same people that complain about how Rockstar is now, are sadly still playing gta online making sure that Rockstar doesn't have to do anything regarding the gta series but release an online update every now and then while people still buys shark cards playing gta online. The fans are part of the problem. I don't play gta online from 2014 now. I never cared much for it. If everyone had done the same we would have had gta 6 already...
I think I would have to agree with Dark Space about not blaming Grove Street Games though - I liken the situation to the hiring of a drunk as a bus driver who ends up crashing and injuring a bunch of people. Yes, he's a scumbag for doing it but the real blame should go to the employers who didn't bother to do any of the relevant legwork in terms of making sure he was fit for the job in the first place. Seriously, removing cinematic mode was the icing on the shit cake for me. When I first played GTA3 as a kid it was my favorite feature. It made the game look like a movie, it was the coolest shit ever. Clearly it was a very important aspect of these games to Rockstar because it’s been included and improved upon in every GTA game since and even made more robust in RDR2. To have left that out of the definitive edition really is just a fat middle finger wearing a fools gold ring of laziness. This had to be the easiest feature possible to include
@@silentmaniac3626 Surprisingly those only exist in the mobile versions of GTA 3 and Vice City. They probably used San Andreas as their blueprint since it doesn't include that feature.
If mods are a necessary part of the game that is when it is done poorly. If mods are an optional thing to enhance the experience but the original experience can be played perfectly that is a game well done.
And it still doesn't work. Legit I have to use vpn to play GTA 4 to connect to their shitty game laucher. GTA 4 game with no online component and yet they forced me to ke social club account. I wouldn't complain about social club if only their game launcher work properly.

Here's my prediction: Rockstar's holiday hit this year was supposed to be GTA 5's new ports for Series X and PS5. But since that got delayed to next year Rockstar needed fast money now, so they got GSG to whip up a quick money maker in a few months. Why do you think this was announced a month before release? Why do you think they never did a gameplay showcase like Rockstar normally does for their games? Why do you think they purposefully kept the marketing secretive and only showed mostly cutscenes in the trailer? Rockstar damn well knew this was going to be a Trainwreck and did nothing about it. They have the backing of Take 2 Interactive and can afford a controversy. They could've delayed this too, they obviously can handle a delay with GTA 5 Next gen. The fog in the original San Andreas was also intentional because back in the 90's smog was a real issue in Cali. Even the radio stations in the game mentioned the smog from time to time. Removing it made no sense at all and killed a partial story line/characteristic of the in game world.
Not to mention even in real life areas with clear skies still have some atmospheric haze in the distance. It's natural. Upping the draw distance isn't necessarily bad, but making it look so empty was. Even GTA V has some fog & smog in air and it's for a reason.

It pisses me off so badly when people say "what did you expect they're remasters, not remakes" What I expected was less load screens, better gameplay, qol updates and something that feels better than the originals, and makes me think "hey this is way better than the originals, even with mods"
The remaster excuse is only valid against people who actually expected a total GTA 5 style remake of the trilogy. But using it to excuse the bugs and graphical/texture/model/art style issues is wrong. This game could've ended up better than this while still being a mere remaster.

I was baffled playing these remasters, looking at how they mascred my childhood. Already found it quite strange as to why they would remaster these instead if remakes, simply put: the games are just to old for that. The models are so low poly nowadays they simply look out of place with all the fancy lighting. As an indie developer I wanted to do my part: fully recreate Vice City using blender, UE5, quixel megascans and metahuman. This includes remaking all the car, gun and character models (properly) and creating the game from the ground up in the unreal engine. I am fully aware of the DMCAs and consequences this will bring with it but that’s a risk I am willing to take. Why? Because I love these games and actually care about them. I want to show to rockstar that it is actually possible to make a good proper remaster. I guess I’ll give a bit of an insight in to what I am doing at the moment: Progress?: Several car and gun models have already been entirely remade (some of them going to upwards of a million polyons), I also have an alternative logo and new animated splash screen, currently working on recreating the intro. I’d love to post screenshots of this all over reddit and twitter however this will probably result in me getting a cease and desist straight away. The process of remaking this: I port the 3d models from the original PC games using tools already made by modders. Then these .dff files are imported in to blender using a pluggin, after which I start detriangulating and cleaning up the mesh. Then I’ll add a subdivision modifier and make the typology fitting to that. After that I’ll add details such as sharp/ smooth edges and tiny things that weren’t in the game at all or were just 2d textures. Keeping the original shape, feel and look of the model. This is the first place I post information about this and I guess I will see what will happen from here (Wanted to get this out there but a subreddit just seemed to risky so if someone by chance comes across this then please don’t blow this up). I’m only a 1 man studio (currently) so it’ll be atleast 3 more years before I have something playable. However if this does somehow become big news then… I challenge you Take 2, come find me. Fight me with your legal ninjas… however realize that if someone is willing to get a DMCA just to show the big company that things could be different then maybe your business decesions reflect that. Feel free to ask me questions, I’ll happily answer them. JMF

If you want to see what I consider the best example of how to do a remaster, go look at the Command & Conquer remaster. Every piece of art remade from scratch in higher definition. Audio properly remastered (and in some cases re-recorded). Music handled by the original composer and suitably redone. Top community members involved in the development process. Large chunks of the original game code used in the remaster to ensure things are as accurate as possible when it comes to gameplay. Bugs in that code (and elsewhere) identified and fixed. Not to mention the epic level of mod support this game has (including releasing all that original game code they were bolting onto the newer engine as open source).
I'd rather spend the time required to play the definitive edition by watching dark space videos than actually playing the def edition. This should be embarrassing for rockstar. Such a disrespect.

You shine an interesting light on this topic, and it led me to wonder... I think Take-Two knew EXACTLY who they we're employing for the job. As much as it is in essence a workforce issue, you have to ask yourself if this would even of been a thing if morally competent individuals still held important roles in the gaming landscape. I believe the quality loss of games can be quantified and attributed to corporate corruption and greed.
29:00 This is the thing, companies are never "good", the quality you see in the games are from the devs, not the higher ups that actually call the shots The first games where made by a humble team, the next ones aren't and any quality that they had was because a dev cared and worked hard on it Calling Rockstar games a good company is like calling the owners of a 5 star hotel great architects. They did not design the hotel, they did not make the hotel, they do not even RUN the hotel The same with big gaming companies, the glory should be for the DEVELOPERS that made the games, not the company that hired them
Yes and not, the original owners and foundators were responsible of making the games as good as they were, the new CEOs couldn't care less now that they have gta5 online. Your example of the hotel is also wrong, yes it was the architects and workers whose built it, but it was also the owner the one who paid them to build it that way because he always could pay for other gross and cheaper desing for the building and yet, he paid for the nice one, so if you find the hotel good looking is thanks to the owner who care enough to pay good architects for a good job. This also apply the other way around. Rockstar paid to shitty developers for doing their job, and that's why this is, exclusively, Rockstar's fault over grover street studio or whatever they call themselves

It would have been a tiny project (from a management perspective), don't need a contract and ton of follow up with a studio, just use in-house counsel for handling the IP stuff with modders, and a tiny team with QA-people and a couple of developers to package it together nicely. Outsourcing this like they did makes me question the decision making skills at the higher levels of management there.
@@nicholasleah840 Obviously the best, but that would have meant a pretty significant project from their side, setting up a complete team etc. Plus the fact that many modders have professional lives and jobs and might not be available for or want new jobs.
completely unnecessary critique: I wouldn't've chosen RE3 Remake at 3:53 because its predecessor RE2 Remake is critically much more acclaimed (I'd say genuinely perfect) whereas RE3 Remake has some flaws, especially in regard to how faithful it is to its original
Rockstar literally was one of the best game companies back in 2013, and since 2015 it starts to downgrade and in 6 years, Rockstar could make the 2nd worst game ever, burying its legacy just to get quick cash.
Attacking and sending threats to the developers is never okay, but Grove Street Games does deserve some criticism. Grove Street Games are also part of what went wrong with the Decaf Edition's release, they chose to take on a project they knew they'd not be able to pull through with, they were handed the project and just said "sure, boss, we can create a decaf edition no problem" despite lacking the tools and manpower to do so.
@@MsZsc Yeah, Gameloft has never been the same since they started developing for the Modern Mobile Market. Early 2010s were still decent, especially with Gangstar Rio wich had a wonderful port on Nokia, and I'd say a decent 3D version on Android and iOS. Asphalt was also fine until they made it to the modern market, where they had no choice but to incorporate in-app purchases, as singleplayer games just don't cut it on Mobile nowadays anymore. Man, I miss 2010s mobile gaming...it had so many promising titles and wonderful game developers, with a mix of casual games and games that took themselves seriously. I'd like to point something out in defense of Grove Street Games, they did not choose that name because of GTA. It is based on the street that their offices are based in which is called Grove street. Yeah, they probably knew its a cheeky nod to SA but they didn't chose it purely because of that.

Great video and really informative! I think younger Millennials and Gen Z'ers can now see what we older millennials and younger gen x'ers were bitching about all the time. This is what companies do after creating something great and becoming massive, because they too were young and full of passion once upon a time but their passion allowed them to live like royals and the hunger dissipated. I hate to break it to you but you were kids during a golden era and it never comes back. It actually only gets worse with these hobbies and interests. Welcome to the club. Brace yourself for the reboots, remakes, re-imaginings, remasters and terribly thought out sequels aimed at a new generation of 15 year olds. The people over at Volition and Deep Silver are doing it too with Saint's Row. Hopefully some new IPs emerge and they redefine these genres of games and we can all get immersed into the worlds and stories again. Until then don't get rid of your old copies. They tend to become collector's items.
So true. I now feel very lucky to have lived through a golden age of gaming, the early till mid 2000s. These will never come back again no matter how great today's graphics are. Then you have the online distribution model which is making developers lazy (they can always release downloadable patches and fixes, so the released version doesn't even need to be fully functional) and the prevalence of mobile gaming which is dumbing down everything. Trouble with old copies is that the graphics look really bad. Then if you're on Windows they don't run properly on Windows 10, will crash or may not even install.
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia That's very true about old copies on the pc side, however with emulation, you can play the console versions and even upscale them. The ps2 emulator PCSX2 is super impressive! Me personally I maintain old hardware like Neo Geo, FM Towns, OG Xbox, PC Engine, etc but I also use emulators and I believe they are the real future of game preservation. You're right, the current distribution model promotes lazy and careless development but once everyone becomes familiar with emulation, these lazy and cheap companies will be threatened by their own past. They already know this, thats why Rockstar removed the old versions of GTA.
I don't understand how a company as big as Rockstar/take 2 would leave the development of remastering an entire open world, let alone three of the most iconic open world maps ever to a team of just 21 employees... I just doesn't make any sense, they know more than anyone else how hard creating a map as big as the gta 3 map is, and you don't need to be a game developer to know that remastering 3 entire maps with just 21 people working on it is literally impossible...
5:38 Reminds me of the Silent Hill HD Collection. Konami lost the original source code for SH 2 and 3, and they gave a remaster project (NOT like the Definitive Edition of GTA, but simply uprezzed textures and such) to Hijinx Studios, a tiny ass company who mainly did mobile games, with older, unfinished, incomplete beta builds of the source code to work with. It failed horribly, but I think Hijinx was given a nearly impossible task (They not only encountered expected porting bugs, but "Obsolete" bugs from the unfinished builds) and it's mostly on Konami for losing the source code and picking someone who didn't have the resources and experience to handle it.
I am not entirely sure but I believe Rockstar also lost the source code of the PS2 GTA Trilogy, all they had left was the PC port which already had some issues and it was the one War Drum Studios used to do the mobile port back in 2014. I think the best thing a company can do when they lose the source code is to grab the original version, upscale it and hack it to make it run smoother with stability checks. The classic GTA Trilogy on PC does not work without mods on modern PCs. They could have just included the fan mod fixes in the executable and tweak some stuff to call it "Definitive". It wouldn't be amazing but I think it would at least be acceptable. Instead we got this. I'm glad I still got the classic versions.
When GTA United and GTA Underground were threatened legal action, I had a hope for at least having 3 cities combined in one map in this edition... Now it doesn't even makes sense that they were treated this way
@@aronblanche CDPR wasn't even that bad looking back now. Now, compare this studio to Rockstar, who outsourced the remaster of their GTA Trilogy, one of their most influential games, you start to see a problem.

Rockstar's holiday hit this year was supposed to be GTA 5's new ports for Series X and PS5. They definitely didn't avoid showing gameplay because they were superconfident over the final product quality.
I wonder what they consider harassment all I did was criticize the games on their Twitter post
I guess I’ll give a bit of an insight in to what I am doing at the moment:
Progress?: Several car and gun models have already been entirely remade (some of them going to upwards of a million polyons), I also have an alternative logo and new animated splash screen, currently working on recreating the intro.

They already know this, thats why Rockstar removed the old versions of GTA.
im 20 and played the hell out of every gta game there is

GTA: CHINATOWN WARS
EXPANDED AND ENHANCED DEFINITIVE EDITION (Comes with free copy of GTAV)

Still better than definitive edition

28:02 it's funny how every time dark viper rants about something it always looks like he is talking about witness protection

*WITNESS PROTECTION FOR WHAT? NO ONE WAS CONVICTED OF ANYTHING*
Beautiful script, man...the pain of a fan of the original series can be felt palpably!
At least they managed to do one thing.
Made me apprechiate the Originals even more.
I am absolutely agreed to that. Luckily I still have the hardcopy of the 3 GTA games, but I dont have my PS2 anymore.

When GTA United and GTA Underground were threatened legal action, I had a hope for at least having 3 cities combined in one map in this edition... Now it doesn't even makes sense that they were treated this way
I agree, fuck rockstar and take two
If Rockstar was smart, they would hire the modders.
Even CDPR hired the modders to fix cyberpunk.
So apparently cdpr better than Rockstar at the moment
@@aronblanche CDPR wasn't even that bad looking back now.
I mean, sure, they fucked up Cyberpunk but at least they had something original going for it and they're actually a pretty good company with what I'd say is a quite decent game library, especially with Witcher 3.
Now, compare this studio to Rockstar, who outsourced the remaster of their GTA Trilogy, one of their most influential games, you start to see a problem.
8:54 spyro wasn´t remastered it was remade just to make a pointment. Even though activision saying is a remaster is definetly a remake for having a reprogramation, reriggin, remodeling and even a different art dirrection from the og spyro.
14:07 Thank you, I said exactly the same thing. For them to try to frame it as "using the cartoonish graphics of the originals games" is complete BS, the og games looked as real as they could at the time. What a disappointment
"You know who doesn't insult it's customers with broken products? Wargaming"
That's a lie.
When I heard that, I started scrolling through the comments, looking for this :-))
Man, Wargaming and Gaijin are equally corrupt cash grabbers. Their games are unplayable to me. Too much pay to win, too little enjoyment. Believe me, I tried.
Dude's a Total Sellout and a Hypocrite
@@10yearsinthejoint363 I thought something was off when he called MAFIA a remaster. It's a remake.
@@10yearsinthejoint363 Thanks for making that assumption. In reality I am neither of those things. I've learned a lot from this video when it comes to sponsorships. I enjoyed it the week that I was making this video. I played it casually to get a feel for it to see if it was fun, and I did have fun.
In the future I'll do more in depth research on what the community thinks of things, since I don't know the back story or culture around many things.
I'm not a hypocrite because I don't knowingly abuse the people that watch my videos, take advantage of them, or trick them. This is a free tank game on pc. It literally costs you nothing, don't spend money on it, or better yet- don't play it if you don't like it. Gameplay wise, I enjoyed it. And I stand by that. However things I've heard in the comments do alter my opinions here and there.
Even Mr.Krabs cares about his customers more
Kinda hilarious that gta SA on Ps2 still has *the undeniably best* atmosphere out of every remaster they made... maybe even out of every GTA theyve made! (ok it might be unfair to compare the games, since SA has multiple environments with at least 3 different climates etc..)
Bro I regret not buying the original SA on my PlayStation before they fucking d listed the originals
@@blitroi damn.. yeah there are so many ppl missing out on these masterpieces due to some incredibly stupid decisions from rockstar...
Yeah, the ps2 version is the best version, the orange glow and atmosphere fit the game perfectly.
Sadly, this is rockstar going forward, they know people will buy these games for how much cost at any price.
The IP name sells! Gta 6 will be trash and still make an easy billion
@@JessicaGarcia-xf9wr GTA 6 will be revolutionary for gaming, similar to RDR2, and GTA 5.
You are legitimately stupid if you believe GTA 6 will be anything less than amazing.
Rockstar has never, in their entire 23 years, made a bad game.
@@Dead4911 All the good people at rockstar left, RDR2 was the last game the original devs worked on. All the future titles will be soulless and worthless.
They should've called these the Definitive Beta/Pre-release and to be honest, these games fit waaaaay better with that title than just calling it Definitive Edition. If they knew it's crappy, they should've made a free demo/beta mode w/ limited gameplay and add feedback button to let the community report the bugs/problems, that way the devs can fix stuff slowly and we can expect that there will be bug fixes/beta updates coming soon until final release kinda like Minecraft, but nah, they chose to release the final without fixes :/
Other than the great overall coverage of the Trilogy release, can we all appreciate this guy's impressive quality of content? The editing, music and info made this a really enjoyable video
