I bought this guitar about a year and half ago. I spent months playing different guitars, such as the Martin OM-15M and all mahogany Eastman parlor models. But from the very first moment I played the FYM66HD, I just knew this is a special guitar. I have no regrets. This is the one guitar that will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands, because you'll never get it from me any other way. I'm glad someone gave it a proper review, thanks John.
I have been playing for about 25 years and have owned Martin's, Gibson's Taylors, Yamahas, Alvarez, you name it... J.P. knows what he is talking about. Younger players, listen to this man! Some things about guitar are subjective, we don't all want the same things out of tone, but when it comes to paying too much for that name on the headstock, there's a lot of snake oil in the music gear industry and RUclipsr's like J.P. Cormier are helping cut through the all the effort these companies put into brand building, etc.. I happen to also agree with his taste in tone, Mahagony is a fantastic tone wood and it's my favorite as well. I do like Mahagony top guitars as well, but for back and sides, it's always Mahagony for me. Rosewood almost always cost more, but that cost doesn't mean "better tone" it means "different tone". In the United States, and really Western Civilization, we're taught to think in linear terms. The more you spend = better. But guitars are more like paint brushes, hammers and mallets. They are tools. You could go to the hardware store and spend $25 on the best mallet they have, hand carved handle or whatever and it's still not going to do the job of a hammer as well as a $5 hammer could. When you think of guitars this way and realize the schemes the gear industry plays it really opens your mind to options.
Man can you ever play the you know what out of a guitar. That last song at the end damn near brought tears to my eyes..... You sir, are a master. Thank you jp.
After a year of chasing a used FYM66HD, I finally snagged one! I've had it for about a week now and don't think I'll ever look back. This guitar has such a rich sound and is so well balanced. Every day I find something new I like about it. The neck is especially comfortable for me and I find certain challenging phrases more accessible, which encourages me to practice and push myself more. I can't say enough good things about it. You weren't wrong-thanks, JP!
Yeah, I think this one is the last acoustic I need. A Martin campfire guitar, A rosewood Yamaha dred...and this small body all mohogany Yari. That's a guitar for every purpose/situation that I'll ever need. I can set the rest free. I no longer feel the need to own more guitars than I have time to play....often.
Just got one of these. Your review persuaded me, and I'm glad I saw it. This guitar is everything you said in your video, just blown away by how good the FYM66HD is. The bass is to die for, it's tight and punchy, not boomy. The mids and highs are sweet and it has lovely overtones. There is not one bad thing I can say about the Yairi, it is an utterly amazing guitar both sound-wise with immaculate construction. Even my wife mentioned how good it sounded. One year ago I bought a Gibson LG2 acoustic (similar price range to the Yairi). Well......... It's been nothing but trouble (lots of quality control issues from the factory) , and the "Vintage V Neck" with its gloss finish being so cumbersome compared to the Yairi's sleek satin finish and ergonomically shaped neck, making it much easier to play. The Gibson needed considerable work to make it playable, the Yairi came perfectly set up with no issues. This one's definitely a keeper. I've tried other brands of all Mahogany guitars, and most have a very boomy bass, with dull highs, but the FYM66HD is not one of those, it's definitely a chameleon, which can fit into any style of playing. Thanks for your excellent video!
As a huge fan of Yairi guitars, having 4 of them myself, I was led to your channel by your first review of one. I stayed for all of the other great stuff posted. This all HD mahogany guitar is one I was looking forward to hearing more about. Having played only different spruce and cedar topped guitars, I was a bit leery about what hog would sound like as a soundboard. That guitar does sound fantastic! Once you have reviewed all 3 of the current Yairis, it would be fun to hear them back to back. ...Love the channel - Thanks!
These are truly amazing guitars. I have a Dy70ceshb. Without a doubt it is the most precise instrument I have ever played. My D41 doesn't come close to my Yairi. I play mine every day. Thank you so much for your review and explanation of the Yairi Guitars. I look forward to your next review. All the best, Scot
Finally took delivery yesterday of this masterpiece. I figured I should come back and report my thoughts where it all started; this review. It’s unbelievable, and just as advertised (except the tortoise strap button, oddly?). A remarkable instrument in every way. Everything I expected for sure (and I expected a LOT). I was gonna say that JP overstated the volume of this one, BUT I just realized that when I tested it out, being a fingerstyle player, I didn’t even try it with a pick! When you pick it with a plectrum it goes from merely ‘extremely outstanding’ to ‘completely stunning and almost unbelievable’ in tone, clarity, and indeed, volume. It’s difficult to conceive of a guitar sounding any better. Thank you for the detailed and entertaining review, sir. I’m set for life on acoustic guitars.
@@kamarienedwards1757 it’s far and away the best. The only guitar I’ve ever played that is close to in its league is a 1942 banner Gibson that was really special. Sadly, I don’t own that one!
I’ve never bought a guitar based on a RUclips review; but damn it sounded fantastic and your review was phenomenal. I purchased this guitar two weeks ago and it is amazing.
I'd love to see you review a Zager guitar. So many differing opinions on their quality and actual makers online. I know that J.P. would know what to think of them...
I've had a Zager 'Travel" model for some years. The neck/fretboard is very nice, particularly for my small hands. I play it along with instruments that are much more expensive. My only complaint: Like most "travel/parlour" guitars, they are 12-fret instruments, and I like the extra range of a 14-fret instrument.
Fantastic. I recently bought the Alvarez masterworks om66 with solid mahogany back and sides and a spruce top. It is astonishingly good in terms of tone, with a beautiful strong midrange, and plenty of volume. Completely unexpected at the price point and it gives me so much joy to play. It’s not entirely perfect out of the box but a couple of hours with a luthier will finish it up beautifully. So by this reckoning, that Yairi must really be as mind blowing as John makes it sound.
Thanks for another excellent review, JP. I, for one, didn't think too much of a guitar with a mahogany top until now. Now I'm a real believer instead of just a "dream believer". Ha! I hope you keep these reviews coming. In my opinion, they are the best acoustic reviews on RUclips.
I had played this guitar several times at my local dealer, liked it, but wasn't sure; you convinced me-- my Taylor 717e BE WHB was a straight across trade at my local dealer. The Taylor is well built, and well marketed; it is a good guitar-- I liked it, just couldn't bring myself to love it, after a year... your review was the button that needed tho be pushed. Dealer had two; I A/B played the two; came home with one. Thank you-- your Martin vs Alvarez video was an influence here; the name brand hype is not neccesarily the deal-maker here. My new Yairi guitar is twice the guitar as the Taylor. Did I say Thank You?...
I came very close to pulling the trigger so far on a Martin 00-14, Larrivee 000-40, and Guild M-25.. all mahogany top. But I kept holding off. I even came close to jumping on a mahogany topped Collings. I didn't know about this Yairi option and I think I just found the winner. Thanks for the review!
Do it. You will not regret it! I had a similar situation a couple years ago, now. Almost bought a Martin, then I stumbled upon this, and I now have my forever guitar.
I own a 1990 Yairi DY59. Perfect condition. I love it, even beyond my Martin. Yairis have a sound and feel like no other guitar I have experienced. My dui59 is a dreadnought but it has the same kind of balanced tone going on that this guitar does. I don't know if it's the tone or the attack of the notes, but my Yari is incredibly responsive and dynamic. But the bass stays tight. Paid $650 for it in 2019. It's every bit as high quality as a Martin Standard Series. It sounds different, but excellent. Playability is far better than my D18. It's in a whole different level of refinement, in my opinion. On par with high end Taylor guitars. I'm admittedly a Yairi fanboy. Only reason I write this is to try to influence people sitting on the fence about these wonderful guitars. I literally just ordered this guitar earlier today and was surfing videos trying to peak my excitement! If it's anything like my old one, its going to be great. If I'm lucky it'll be better than the old one.
OK JP I just snagged one of these minty used FYM 66 HD. It arrived yesterday and I don't think it was played at all. It was not very opened up and I thought "uh oh!?"but I played it hard for an hour and it transformed like nothing else I've ever witnessed lol played it again for a little while last night. Put it on the toneright overnight and this morning, it was a vibrating, resonating beast. Very warm and very sparkly as well! I just it at my Sunday church and h boy oh boy... HUGE! Beautiful, warm.. just unbelievable! completely different than the two other guitars. You advise me on… MYD60HD and the Boucher studio goose OM 51. My three acoustic guitars, all of them you have advised me on, lol! You have not steered me wrong, sir! They are all peerless
I just got mine in. Damn J.P. You weren’t kidding. This thing is fantastic. This has to be the finest all hog guitar I have ever played. I’ll be throwing a k&k this week and this one is here to stay.
Hi John, I am really enjoying your videos. I have a 1990 k.Yairi YW11, perfect neck and great tone for the price (600 euros). Definitely better than guitars double that price. Have you ever tried one of those? This are the specs: Top: Solid Spruce Back/Sides: Shidomelia(laminated) Bridge: Ebony Fingerboard: Rosewood Neck: Natoh Never heard of shidomelia!
About time someone gave these magnificent instruments the credit they deserve. I had an FY84 OM which was a lot cheaper than this but was still the finest guitar I ever owned. Traded for a martin. Bad bad decision.
@@glennvandusen7467 yeah. I’ve played some beauties but this was 00017 ws which should have been right up my street but was actually quite shoddily put together and lacked any real character and if anything was too easy to play. Hard to define what that means but it didn’t offer much back if that makes any sense at all?
JP, I stumbled upon your channel a couple months back, as I have been guitar shopping. Buying my first new instrument since 2011 or so, since I’m using some Alvarez Regents from that timeframe. Great beginner guitars that I got when first starting out, which are still more than serviceable, but.... It’s time to upgrade! Thought I wanted a Martin 000-15SM until I saw this review. I’m sure the SM is a great guitar, and especially for the price, but this just seems to kill it in every aspect I can think to consider... Balance, dynamics, overall volume, sweetness, and styling. I’ve been shopping for hours a day online and having trouble getting one below the current MAP of $2399. I even tried to buy a blemished one but got sniped by a matter of hours! After about 2 months of consistent effort, I finally got a great deal on one that ships in September! I’ve probably put 10-15 views on this video myself, and I’ll be watching this review over and over again between now and then. I can’t wait! Thank you for the informative and entertaining review. It pretty much directly made a sale, since I can’t play one in person, as much as I’d have loved to. Talking with the dealer I ordered from, he estimated (admittedly, off the record without specific true numbers known) that there have so far been less than 200 or so of these made overall. Batches nationwide (worldwide?) seem to be about 6-10 per quarter at this point.. so if you folks want one, I’d advise not falling asleep on these. They really won’t (can’t) be made forever. I’d love to know the true number, but let’s just say it probably isn’t gonna be 1,000! Any old guitar center just isn’t gonna have one up on the wall to try out. I’ll be sure to report back when mine finally comes in. Thanks again, JP!
I have one. My fav guitar out of my 21 Martin, Santa Cruz, Lowden, Lakewood, Rainsong, Yamaha, Anuenue guitar family 😊. Visited Yairi in Kani in April 2024. Such a quality focused, warm place 🙌
After seeing your review, I thought about it for a few days, then went ahead and ordered one. I hope it sounds somewhere near as wonderful when I play it as it does when you work your fingerpicking magic. I got an Epiphone Excellente 5 months ago, based on your glowing recommendation, confirmed by playing it in my favorite Houston guitar store (Fullers). I have been so delighted with that one that I decided to trust your recommendation. Today I went ahead and ordered an Alvarez FYM66HD Yairi OMe sight-unseen and not test played by me. I've only done this 5 times before (Epiphone Dove Pro, Martin OMC-16, & Breedlove Amazon Jeff Bridges from Sweetwater), Martin OM Cherry from ZZounds, and a Harley Benton 12-string electric from Thomann Music Store in Germany, and I haven't been burned yet. Fingers crossed, this one will be one of my top 2-3 favorites to play.
I ordered that DYM60HD after seeing your review and hearing you play it. I had to wait SIX months to get it and the result was a VERY HAPPY CAMPER here! I have a gorgeous 2004 Martin J40, a Yairi 12 and other "lesser" guitars that I don't mind letting friends and even strangers play and gee wiz JP I have to tell you that I love that new dread Yairi! It's an amazing instrument and it BLEW my Martin away, which I would have thought impossible. Still love my J40 but I always reach for the DYM60HD first. Can wait to hear this review and hoping I don't wind up with GAS (again)!
Wow, That's an awesome amazing sounding instrument. You are one lucky man. You get to play all these guitars. I assume you get to keep them also. Awesome video thanks for sharing. Stay well and safe my friend.
JP, would love to get your take/review of the FYM60HD if they can send you one. Considering how great this sounds I'm sure it's amazing, but the Adi top is a completely different tone that would be nice to hear for comparison, especially in OM form. It would also be interesting to hear it vs the DYM60HD.
JP, Saw the ALVEREZ Hondurian, months went by, researched, pondered , wathed you over again Today 8/25w/21 ordered Fym 66 HD , muscians friend, #6 waiting list! Mahalo JP
March 8, 2022 Jp, Update! Still awaiting my backordered FYM 66 HD.... Much dissapointment with the delays.... but hopefull ..... ʻAuē .... Kekai Chock Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi Hawaiʻi
We’ll have to compare notes! 😂 You’ll get yours before me. I get mine in September. You probably got one that I put an offer in on (too slow!) haha. I hope it’s as amazing as I think it is.
Your reviews are great. Thanks . ( your playing also, but that goes without saying) Arthritis in my hands has me thinking lately of having to move away from my dreadnaught, and investigate a reasonable quality 'OM' or 'Parlour' size. (growing old sucks)
what a boomer she is!!! I have boat seats from my fathers old 62 glaspar sadly I had to junk the boat ,thought of making a telecaster out of the wood but now Im thinking it needs to be a acoustic, always heard mahogony wasnt good for acoustic tops ,you just proved them wrong
Ok gang, its down to a coin toss for me so need opinions. I am ready to buy my 2nd Yairi but am stuck between the FYM66HD OM and the Dread version DYM60HD. I have been beating on my DY62C for over 20 years and it's time for an upgrade. aaaaaand go!.....
I have more Alvarez Yari guitars then I like to count been collecting them for years my hobbie they are great guitars used to get used one fairly reasonable not anymore I have recently sold three of them two different friends been wanting to buy them for a long time thanks for posting
I'm still worried about the direct couple bridge. How will it hold up over the years? I have three Yairi guitars. I bought the first, a classical 5036 when I was a kid in 1973. I bought two more DY85s later on. One is a two piece back, the other is a burled mahogany three piece back sides. Both 1970's models. All amazing guitars. I'm really tempted on this model you demonstrated. I want an OM, but the Martin OM is too much money.
I wouldn’t worry. I mean, it was invented and first used in the mid-80’s, so we don’t have like, hundreds of years of data. But the oldest ones are over 35 years old and I don’t believe there has ever been an issue with a DCB lifting, separating, pulling, shifting, or degrading in any way. I’ve never seen it. I don’t think it’s really possible, to be honest!
@@benwood7132 I decided to buy one, but now they're back ordered..... Welcome to post-plandemic America. Too much money chasing to few product. Don't make the product until someone orders it. I'll just keep my old stuff....
You ruined me with the previous K.Yairi review I went and tried one in a shop here in Tokyo and absolutely fell in love. I tried a few Gibsons first, then Taylor but nothing hit me with the responsiveness of the Yairi. It was amazing. I bought one that evening. It arrives in a few days. 🎉
Love the demo here Jp. It seems so balanced and toneful!!! Jp my fav axe is a Martin 000-15m all mog. How does this stack up to the sound of mine? I am looking for a touch more treble then i have. PLEASE let me know how it compares. BTW I love your String Theory show. It's the only show I make a point to watch each week. Also buddy love your playing and style. Your voice is so smooth and soothing too. Big new fan here from PA USA. Thanks for the music!!!
Martin owners kind of hate these guitars. I don't get it--is there a rivalry or something? At an open mic once, a guy came up after my set and said--"oh you got one of those old cheap Alvarez guitars." I figured he was joking so I laughed. Then he talked for about as long as I would listen to how much he spend on his. Didn't his mother ever tell him that just because it costs more doesn't make it better?
He was obviously jealous or he would not have commented. After he was done with his story I woulda said, man what a shame you did all that and could have had a better sounding cheap Alvarez for a lot less.

Deep and warm bass. Another great guitar !
Oo lord that mahogany is so beautiful to hear
Wow man...just WOW.
Thanks to you JP I now own this instrument. What a joy to play. Can not thank you enough Charles McKenna PEI
So you like it or loved it? Mine will be here in July.
Ordered one from Sweetwater. February 2023 they are saying a small supply of them are coming in.
This are the specs:
Top: Solid Spruce
Back/Sides: Shidomelia(laminated)
Bridge: Ebony
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Neck: Natoh
Never heard of shidomelia!
What beautiful playing and what an instrument….
Really fantastic looking guitar, and fantastically played too!
About time someone gave these magnificent instruments the credit they deserve. I had an FY84 OM which was a lot cheaper than this but was still the finest guitar I ever owned. Traded for a martin. Bad bad decision.
All Martins are not created the same. I've played some real duds.
@@glennvandusen7467 yeah. I’ve played some beauties but this was 00017 ws which should have been right up my street but was actually quite shoddily put together and lacked any real character and if anything was too easy to play. Hard to define what that means but it didn’t offer much back if that makes any sense at all?
JP is always my go to video for just total enjoyment!! Great guy!
Thank you for sharing the love
Wow ❤ great 👍 report. You play beautifully.
I'm so in love with this guitar. Saving my pennies ❤
I hope that I will be able to make this my next guitar! It is absolutely amazing in every way.
I have an Alvarez Masterworks MFA66CESHB...very similar looking..and awesome sounding...cheaper than the Yairi but just as beautiful sounding.
Absolutely freaking beautiful
I recently purchased the Parlor version of this guitar. It has a sweet, balanced sound.
Great for those melodic tunes that go up the neck!!...because the high strings come out right at you!!...
Thank you tons. Looking for new guitar, focused on AY and a couple of others. Yes it's expensive and quite clearly worth it.
Wow, That's an awesome amazing sounding instrument. You are one lucky man. You get to play all these guitars. I assume you get to keep them also. Awesome video thanks for sharing. Stay well and safe my friend.
Very nice JP Luv the neck...!!
JP, would love to get your take/review of the FYM60HD if they can send you one. Considering how great this sounds I'm sure it's amazing, but the Adi top is a completely different tone that would be nice to hear for comparison, especially in OM form. It would also be interesting to hear it vs the DYM60HD.
well i just bought this guitar (used). this is the third guitar that i bough on JPs recommendation (DYM60HD, Boucher. sg-51 OM, and now FYM66HD)!!
JP,
Saw the ALVEREZ Hondurian, months went by, researched, pondered , wathed you over again
Today 8/25w/21 ordered Fym 66 HD , muscians friend, #6 waiting list! Mahalo JP
March 8, 2022
Jp,
Update! Still awaiting my backordered FYM 66 HD....
Much dissapointment with the delays.... but hopefull .....
ʻAuē .... Kekai Chock
Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi Hawaiʻi
Wow.. very rich sound! (Since I am mostly deaf it would suit me just fine).
Incredible guitar .. incredible playing. ♫•*¨*•.¸¸✿.
My Alvarez AD66SHB with a Solid African Mahogany Top has such an amazing tone. It is unreal. Every time I play it I hear a deeper tone.
I am buying one. Nuff said.
Did you buy one? I’d love to hear what you think. I bought one, but it doesn’t arrive for months. (Im)patiently waiting!
Yes, bought it, but it won't be here until July. I am on the edge of my seat waiting. Seems like an eternity!
We’ll have to compare notes! 😂 You’ll get yours before me. I get mine in September. You probably got one that I put an offer in on (too slow!) haha. I hope it’s as amazing as I think it is.
I am SO excited. Can't wait to get it!
@@plainjane1812 did you get it? How is it?
Thanks… great video … thats my next guitar. Also, thats the guitar that deserves to be compared to a Martin OM
Even on youtube, it jumps out what a special guitar this is.
Is it JP? Or is it the guitar? "Only his hairdresser knows for sure." -----JP, that is almost an unbelievable sound. Thanks.
Great guitar!
Two of the best my D16 Martin and a K Yairi YM2
Your reviews are great. Thanks . ( your playing also, but that goes without saying) Arthritis in my hands has me thinking lately of having to move away from my dreadnaught, and investigate a reasonable quality 'OM' or 'Parlour' size. (growing old sucks)
Wow, that’s a beauty!
Sounds killer! Yairi, Thanks!
what a boomer she is!!! I have boat seats from my fathers old 62 glaspar sadly I had to junk the boat ,thought of making a telecaster out of the wood but now Im thinking it needs to be a acoustic, always heard mahogony wasnt good for acoustic tops ,you just proved them wrong
J P Love your hat
You said it JP. "WOW!" Thanks. $2400. Online.
That seems almost too reasonable. Wow.
Yep
I want it so bad!
I'd love a comparison between the Alvarez and a Boucher OM.
Incredible tone. HONEEEY!!!! I NEED A NEW GUITAAAAR!!!!! 👋
@@azcharlie2009 I waited a full year to receive mine after I bought it. It was a tortuous wait. But I must say, it was worth it. At least to me.
Can you do a review on the DYMR70SB
Dear Brother, I Wondered If You Knew Anything About American Acoustic Tone Bar!! Thank's From Australia.
I own a 1987 yairi dy78. I would love to see a comparison to a masterworks.
Reminds me of a grand piano
that's a beautiful instrument and your playing is fantastic. Now I am torn between the yairi and the Yamaha 56 that you reviewed...
Let em hate. Best way to pick out a guitar is with your hands and your ears.
He was obviously jealous or he would not have commented. After he was done with his story I woulda said, man what a shame you did all that and could have had a better sounding cheap Alvarez for a lot less.
If his guitar is so amazing he wouldn't need to convince everyone he meets of that.
