- A playthrough of Namco's 1990 horror platform game for the TurboGrafx-16, Splatterhouse.
This was one of those TG16-exclusives that people wanted to own the system for. For a console game released in the US in 1990, it's pretty shockingly graphic. It's very close to the arcade game, and there are quite a few really uncomfortable images throughout, with a couple of them verging on nauseating, like the bloated, deformed fetus thing dragging itself across the floor, or the hellhound that will get distracted by lapping up the puddle of goo left if you kill something when it's nearby. Good stuff!
The sequels on the Sega Genesis did improve on it in quite a few ways, but this is the original, and it's a classic for sure.

Yet it's for ages 10+ 😂

13:01 "Help me..." made me sad when I played this at age 10.....
This 1990 horror classic really excels at making you feel uncomfortable, and nails some really good gross-out moments. It's also a pretty good game on its own!
And the soundtrack's just incredible!
+StygianTraveler141 No doubt!
NintendoComplete What do you think about the sequels?
+StygianTraveler141 I thought 2 was good, 3 was amazing, and the reboot on PS3... meh. Still, this is my favorite, with the SH3 in a very close second place :) How bout you?
NintendoComplete The original is the best in my opinion. 2 and 3 was fairly good. And I didn't even know there was a reboot lol
13:55 Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good...
Also fits for 5:44
My good friend and I would his much older brothers and their friends play this game back in the day. The moment at 11:53 where the zombie dog eats the remnants of the corpse scared the hell out of us the first time we saw it. This game had us all glued to the tv though, it was unheard of to have a console game that was this full of gore back then. It was awesome.
Only thing close was Mortal Kombat
At 11:40 is an opportunity for unlimited points. Just keep killing the skeletons every time the witch (warlock?) resurrects them and don't hit the witch. You can keep this up until you get the highest possible score or (more likely) get bored and lose patience.
I have very fond memories of watching my big brother play this when I was a little kid. It was so creepy and sad! I couldn't look away. I'm 40 now and still love this game.
I'm 36 I grew up with these games I can remember when the snes and Genesis and 64 came out I don't care much for the games nowadays
Agree 1000%. Too complicated, too much grinding, and there are always people online that ruin it for everyone.
Put the game in and push start. That’s how I roll.
I think the thematic of old school games are superior than these days because the majority games of nowadays lack of original topics.
@@alexandervalle525 It sounds like it'd be easier to come up with ideas by drawing instead of making complicated 3d models too
@@dankhill6851 in general programming is really complicated even 2d or 3d have their own pattterns. Pc engine could do a little better cos its capabilities are really awesome. By the way this game is a good version I really like it.
The turbogarfx-16 version is still bloody good. 😀👍🎮
Back in my day you had to figure the game out without turning it off!! Sometimes you left the console on all day LOL.
Watching this now, I’m trying to figure out why it was so hard when I was 8 years old
Since this game is going to be part of the 57 games included in the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, I can't wait to play this game along with Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, The Legend of Valkyrie, and the others around March 19th, 2020.
March 19th is my birthday
14:17 this is my phone alarm. I wake up pumped up as hell... Then I hit snooze.
I'm reviewing this game as party of my October horror collection, so I'm playing through it for the 1st time. This game is hard AF. The levels are generally really short and you get 5 continues, but damn...it ain't an easy game. I remember renting Splatterhouse 2 on the Genesis almost 30 years ago (holy shit...where did the time go?) and that game was hard, as well. Back then I couldn't ever figure out why I couldn't ever find Splatterhouse 1. They had Splatterhouse 2 and 3 at the video store, but 1 was nowhere to be found! Keep in mind the innernet didn't exist back then...I didn't know 'til years later Splatterhouse 1 was only on the TG16.
Its way better then the geneiss part 2
Actually it was an arcade game
@@muaddib5079 Yes...yes it was. But my local video store was a small business and they didn't rent out arcade cabinets.
I just recently played resident evil village and almost finished with resident evil biohazard right now and a couple of scenes /elements reminded me of this old classic :)
Love the music in this game. Takes me back :)
9:11 I remember from childhood that you reunite with Jennifer and she turns into a swamp monster, and that’s why the music changes from somber to startling, and for some reason, is cut in later releases of the game.
They're kept the candles flying
The BGM on this game was super hype!
The arcade version is so much better
Well obviously. This is back when a home console and even a pc had no chance to compete against an arcade board. And now you can just use mame and play the arcade version if you really wanted to. On your phone probably.
this is museum piece too!
@@omegasupreme5527 also on the Xbox 360 and PS3 through the reboot, although I hate that you have to play the reboot all the way through to unlock them.
Actually no it isnt both are great in thier own ways many like how this feels better
The pumpkin headed things that would resurrect ghouls scared the piss out of me when I was 9. The whole games tone is eerie to this day.
And I just noticed in the credits that they indeed used Chopin’s music. Wild!
Some game stores back in the day refused to sell this game because they said it was too violent for kids.
That fucking bass man, the soundtrack in general was a trip to hear as a child , never made it past saw hands guy , I was only like 6-7 years old when I was playing this gimme a break !
If they ever make a movie of this, they should have Sam Raimi to direct it.
and Kane Hodder for Rick (with mask)
@@billhudson7084 Who would you pick for Human Rick?
@@cs-zz7jd That really is a tough choice as Rick was a college kid with his girlfriend when they went into the house, and I only truly know 80s actors......so......Tom Cruise isn't a bad choice (He's got that charm).
@@billhudson7084 If it was made in the 80s, then maybe. Today, absolutely not. Tom is way too known and he is pushing 60. So I say give the younger and lesser known actors a crack at it.
@@cs-zz7jd Yea, I know. I would definitely not pick Tom Halland (only saying because some people would pick him for weird shit like Nathan Drake.....which Tom doesnt look like Drake at all compared to Nathan Fillion) for Rick at all. But....yea I guess a less known guy for the role.
The third level boss is very easy if you have both shotguns fully loaded. I can, however appreciate doing it the hard way to see if it's possible. Back when I had this game, I tried defeating the third boss completely unarmed without success. Readers if you've defeated him unarmed please tell me so I'll know it's possible.
I had this on a turbografix 16.
This was an early title meant to be a system seller it was on every magazine and showed off turbos huge color pallet this looks way better than the genesis part 2
Rick for Smash!
PixelGoat I think he would look better as a Mortal Kombat character)
I agree with him
I went through so many AA batteries playing Turbo Express lol
Adam Koralik brought us all here
I put this on as background noise recently.
I was expecting Whang's voice to pop up with the OST of the game
this game was the first game i really remeber playing the most
Probably mentioned but the trick I used to do on stage 3 was to save both shotguns for the boss by kicking enemies and conserving ammo then picking them up one by one until I got to the end of the stage
Man I can’t believe he killed Diglett.
This guy/gals doin it all wrong. For example carry both shotguns to the chainsaw boss, lol.
Real HORROR GAME.
I love the look of this game, even though the graphics kinda suck
😂you must be crazy these are gorgeous ,2d graphics amazing to think it nearly matched the most state of the art arcades at the time with same cpu as nes
The music is awesome!!
My brother was 4 years older than me. We shared a paper route, I was in like 3rd grade. He convinced me to use my paper route money to buy turbo traffic 16 with him. Needless to say it was a huge mistake and I’ve also fallen victim to a Ponzi scheme

which version do you people think was better, arcade or turbografx? and why?
My life would be complete if someone ported the TG16 sounds /music to the arcade version. They're just scarier and memorable.
The witch wraith thing sure is
The arcade splat isnt as fun as the turbos splat odd eh but the 2 by 4 is better i actually prefer the turbo version
I see than the game is censored to the top, this splatterhouse versión is for américa or what country??
Well this looks kid-friendly…
Yep, totally does 🥰🥰🥰
Red mask
Masterpiece from Namco
Memories 🔥🔥🔥 kurts voice still in my head
I'd highly recommend this game to little kids.
I played it as a child, and turned out fine (aside from the fact I get the urge to beat the fuck out of flying chairs with a 2x4, while avoiding crawling severed hands on the floor)
So you want little kids to see blood, gore, shotguns and possessed creatures that WILL kill you? also there’s hanging bodies from the ceiling in most levels so I DONT recommend this to little kids
@@lambasedmario okay now that I think about it, maybe little kids could play this if they don’t get scared easily
I always wondered why does the music speed up at stage 2....
Трудно выбрать где лучше,аркадный автомат или Турбо графикс 16
100% agreed RazoE!! TG-16 audio is superior. Visuals have changed a bit from the arcade version. Not too much tho 👍
Its better in some ways than the arcade more fun😊
Too bad it has one thing missing from the arcade.
Ping pong sounds
5:42 Chainsaw boss dies
Arcade: demon scream
Turbo: AHWAAA WA wa
It's different and he's name is Biggy man
Not to mention that in this version he just *disintegrates*
Fire stage fire boss was shown all over ads in 89 showing off turbos one advantag more colors than sega or snes
I can’t believe this game was banned
I can’t believe this was ever considered bloody or scary.
Well everthing was like mario then this hit it was and is amazing nobody then was afraid only posers 😂 i love this game its like a cinnamon broom in fall the music is creepy it in dark alone
@@SwedishMeattball I never got to see or play it until seeing it here on RUclips. I do remember one of the gaming magazines in the day calling it the bloodiest game ever made. Sorry, if you like it great. It’s just very laughable to me. Looks semi fun, I guess. Never had a Turbograffix and didn’t even know where to find one.
@@jime6688 this is the censored version, the arcade version is much creepier.
Creepy gameplay video.
Where is the ending? I finnished this game like clockwork. Where is the ending?
This was a surprisingly good 16-bit version of the game. It's like it's graphically inferior to the Genesis version, buy has WAAYYYY BETTER sound.
Lmao the crap genesis version you.mean part 2 wasnt rated close to good as this
Iys actually.graphically superior to.splattethouse 2 heck the wimpy 64 color genesis gad i ferior versions of valis exile and streetfighter 2 aswell
@@mikegrizz3560 your ortography sucks!
When Michael Jackson was working on the soundtrack for sonic 3 apparently he was very disappointed with the genesis sound board quality.
11:52 ok they've got ghost girls now?
Hey! I used some of the footage from this video in my newest video, I hope that is okay! I credited you in the description! Sorry for not asking for permission, if you need the video taken down I will happily do it :)
Have a good one!
God, I love this game!
used to play it every oct may start again it was originally a launch title like legendary axe and ninja spirit ,( or around launch)so a ton of love went into it turbos high res and better color count made this look dam good and way better than part 2
@@SwedishMeattball I still have to beat part two.
Wow, this game is completely rotten! God damn!
OWW...OWW...OWW..OWW!!
Nostalgia
18:44 eventually became Kiss From A Rose By Seal.
Woahhhh you think so??
i came here from the hi score girl anime
I'm scurred
I used to play this on genesis
か、仮面が、赤くなってる!
This is a North American version.
Japanese version is player’s mask is white.
I figured that would have been obvious by the fact they say Turbografx-16.
Classic 😎
Is this Battletoads?
Its splatterhouse. Specifically a downgraded version for the console. The original Arcade is better
Do to turbos way better color count this looked way better than genesis splatterhouse 2 many like me actually like it better than the arcade i had it new back in the day every kid suddenly was mad they didnt have a turbo this or legendary ax shoulda been pack ins
11:22
I saw a comic ad for this game as a kid and I always was intrigued but scared to try it.
This game looks terrible.
How
It all started as a college field trip to an old and somehow evil mansion. You just wanted to study the gruesome experiments of the world's most renowned parapsychologist. Then things started going wrong, terribly wrong. The last thing you remember is a dull thwack to the back of your skull and you've awakened to find someone or something has taken your girlfriend and to save her you'll have to slaughter your way through 7 levels of the monstrous undead.
Deja de censura Nintendo no seas cagon jajajaja XD
8:00
Way better thsn genesis splatterhouse the turbos huge color palette was a big reason
Lazy port. Lots of cut corners. NEC could have done better if they wanted to.
Not really dude. Just watched a side by side comparison to arcade literally watching both at the same time. Its pretty spot on considering tg-16 is greatly limited in ALL aspects ( audio/graphics processing power and memory ) when compared to a full sized arcade machine
@@hell_march6652 They could have done a better job. It was in their ability to do so. Again, lazy. There are missing details and gaming aspects that could have easily been included.
1000 times better graphics and sound than part 2 on the colorless genesis this was basically a laumch title amd they wemt all out
The inverted cross boss replaced by the King of Madballs
