The Sigma Origin Story has arrived! We don't have all the answers yet - but, we know a lot about how Sigma came to be who he is - unaware that he's a Talon Living Weapon! Pretty different direction from Overwatch - I hope they sympathetically explore his mental health, but that aside, a very interesting hero and great trailer!
Sigma seems so sad. He's being forced and puppetted by Talon after a mistake made trying to understand the fundamentals of the universe. I hope that he can be saved in the lore.
As a Dutch person I can say that Sigma has a slight Dutch accent. However when he screams "What is this Melody?" his accent is far more clear. Also, the Yellow letters at the beginning of the vid, spell out "Bevrijd me" which is Dutch for "Free me" So yeah, it's save to assume Sigma is Dutch.
DemonicRosebush I’m Dutch as well and it is really hard to hear that he is Dutch, most of the times it is quite easy to hear if somebody is Dutch but this voice actor is doing a great job!
Ik the voice actors dutch but i still think hes greek cause of his name and how he writes the mathematical equations in what i assume is the greek alphabet
Sempai Yeah I saw that the yellow letters spell out “release me” backwards in Dutch and he also says “gravity’s harness” and “hold it together” reversed
When he is laying in bed he holds his hands like a mudra, mudras represent the connection of body and spirit in various ways depending on the hand gesture. The one he is doing is the most common one, touching thumb to index which can represent the connection of space and air or the connection of self to a higher power.
I for sure feel a heavy theme of split personalities or split mind or presence with this hero, multiple shots where there are doubles of him, and the recurring line of “Hold it together” like he’s trying to keep these personalities in check. You can also see it through the dialogue and how his tone changes, one scene he’s a determined scientist, the next he’s a frail, damaged old man, the the next he’s emotionless and obsessed with violence and power. Very interesting. Edit: There’s also the reversed line of “Release me” at the end, perhaps one of his forms that doesn’t wish to be with talon
Also while hes going insane you visions of 4 pencils floating and shaking as to wanting to be freed. Then later you see 5 pens doing the same only for one to be covered while hes in his talon gear stating that one man has been lost to the other four.
too put in a nutshell: here we have a dude who made a major discovery but it damaged him, and talon took advantaged of him when he's mentally unstable, broke in and turned him into a weaponnized puppet.
at 9:30 he says something after "its too much to hold on too" in reverse. BOYS. GET ON IT. also idk if its a point worth making, but after talon breaks him out, he seems to calm down and come to a conclusion, as if something has "Grounded him". albeit not perfectly. with his words "its all an illusion, and the melody plays for ME" tbh, i think talon(maybe moira) anchored his mind, and hes a "weapon" to talon to repay them.
This hero has me HYPED. He reminds me of the Marvel Comics villain Graviton, very very similar backstory honestly. Is that a bad thing? ABSOLUTELY NOT. He does also remind me of Magneto, but he's more Graviton. This guy is definitely my new main.
@@Hammeh He hasn't been a super prominent villain in the last decade. He has made several appearances, but mostly as part of an evil team or a cameo. He was a bigger villain for the avengers back in the 70s. He's extremely powerful. Just look up a RUclips video about him and you'll learn all you need to know.
@@Hammeh marvels agents of shield had him on some episodes. There was an element called gravitonium. When stimulated the gravitonium reverses gravity. When infused with a body the person can float , control objects , even crushes if he wants .
I think that finger twitch in the jumpsuit scene 6:43 is him trying to write down equations; that's strengthened by the equations floating around him them; and the later image of him in his lab, but in that catatonic state 8:53. From my high school understanding of relativity, the concept of space-time is that is that the more you are moving through space, the less you're moving through time, and vice versa. Basically if you are accelerating a lot, time slows down and less time will pass for you then people who aren't. As you approach the speed of light, you could move from one spot to another in what seems like instantly; which is one way to explain Tracer. The force of gravity is based on something's mass; the more matter something has, the stronger things are pulled towards it. Black Holes have the most mass of anything we understand, that's why everything is pulled towards it. The force equation is Force=Mass*Acceleration; this makes Mass and Acceleration inverse from each other (A=F/M & M=F/A). So if something had a set force, and you increased it's acceleration some how; like putting them in an experimental super jet; as that acceleration increases to infinity, the mass would decrease to nothing. That's Tracer's incorporeal state she's in as she teleports. But what if you increased your mass instead, and made your self immovable and have objects drawn to you like a black hole, or better yet. What if you could choose if you want the power to be infinitely fast and thus in multiple places at once, without the ability to interact; or the power to be immovable and obliterate anything near you. I think that's what Sigma will be.

I think the only reason as to why light and some other waves can travel at stupendous speeds is because they have no mass. If they did, it would pratically require an infinite ammount of energy for these to move at such tremendous speeds. Although I'm not entirely sure, I think that the more acceleration an object has, the more mass it will gain, so long as that acceleration is kept. Tracer would become a blackhole if she blinked at light's speed due to the ammount of mass she'd gain :D
@@vctr2893 That is why light is so fast, it's energy, so it has no mass. But that's actually the opposite of what happens when you accelerate. Remember the equation is A=F/M (1=2/2) so to increase the acceleration you need to either; increase force (2=4/2) or decrease mass (2=2/1). You can increase force in two major ways; 1. Pushing Something: where you transfer the force of one object into another (Lucio boop) 2. Or putting something heavier near it: The gravitational pull of the object compounds the acceleration (Zarya Grav) It's pretty intuitive actually; something that's heavier is harder to move.
Newton's second law only applies to objects at low velocities, so to figure out an object's mass at speeds near that of light's, it's more consistent to use Einstein's Special Relativity equations (Namely; Lorentz transformations).
I find that his character reminds me a lot of how John Forbes Nash Jr was portrayed in A Beautiful Mind. He suffered with schizophrenia, which caused him to be paranoid and hallucinate visually and audibly. Some people said that the pressures of his work worsened his mental health. I think when it shows Sigma as multiple copies, it demonstrates that his mind is split. He's shown as a scientist, a prisoner and his final talon form. Additionally, he has three different voice performances that go along with his different versions. That's also why the pen and other props reappear as though its multiple timelines - I think he's mixing fragments of his life. He hallucinates the melody too. Talon, especially with Moira as a medical professional, would be able to manipulate easily and perhaps that's even what his head armor is.
I don't think Blizzard is going for the DID angle. I think he was exposed to that singularity when the containment field failed, and became merged with alternate versions from other dimensions. Like an inverse on Tracer. She couldn't even maintain her own form in our universe, while Sigma is multiple dimensional versions merged into one form.
the way sigma reacts to that music makes me think that when the experiment went wrong he saw more than he should have outside of his reality; it would be fun to maybe hear sigma acknowledge the game music

As a dutchy, I must say that his accent is pretty flawless. I did not catch on to it untill my 3rd rewatch and even at that point I wasn't even sure if it was Dutch or just a general English regional accent. After hearing about his nationality I was able to pick out a few things such as short S's and harsh T's.
he is wearing blue and white like overwatch did in the past, maybe he was working for them, hence being n space like Winston. and something went wrong as he was working off duty on the black hole tech for overwatch. Maybe it's how they made the tech for tracer's plane. He might've continued to experiment after the tracer incident, and had the accident that changed him?
I am Dutch and I am beyond hyped! I've been waiting for a Dutch hero for ages and the result seems even better than I hoped. Being Dutch, yes I definitely agree you can hear a slight Dutch accent
About him being linked to or similar to tracer: Einstein taught us that time and space are linked, gravity warps time. Maybe hell be able to do interesting stuff with tracer lore wise
Not mentioned but the garbled mess at the end after the whispered "Hold it together" is "Release me!" I think it is havily hinted towards that Talon made another human weapon. They took a very sick man with potential and did stuff to him
You missed something quite big! The hero is Dutch! At the beginning if you slow the video down you can read in yellow letters (By the Sigma Origin story) "e m d j i r v e B" Which turned around means: "B e v r i j d m e" Which means "Release me" in Dutch :) (The blue letters turn yellow)
I have some speculations that some of the background scenes might be realted to other moments in Overwatch lore. The chamber where he lost control of the blackhole looks similar the the chamber they use to anchor Tracer. The rising debris toward the end of the video could be the destruction of Overwatch HQ.
There seems to be three of him. The early version of him in the scientist outfit, the middle version of him in the prison outfit, and the current version of him in the Talon outfit with the digitally augmented voice. Maybe exposure to the singularity somehow did a Doctor Manhattan on him and he exists simultaneously in all three timelines at once. That could be what's driving him mad. The Talon version of him being the latest in the timeline seems to have better control and understanding of his powers and situation, while the scientist and prison version of him are largely confused and just trying to make sense of what's going on. I wonder if the inevitability of seeing that he becomes a villain is what drives him to grab onto that to hang onto his own sanity while experiencing all these events out of sync with the natural flow of time. Maybe that drive for power, that belief that the accident was a gift from the universe, it helps him keep his mind at peace despite experiencing these events simultaneously. That might even be an oversimplification for the sake of having the trailer make sense. What if he experiences his entire life simultaneously and it's driving him insane? We're not designed to cope with that kind of non-linear existence.
Theory: The accident caused some sort of mental disorder like multiple personalities. The accident left him in a comma or a permanent state of shock but when his “evil” personality comes out he is able to move. That’s why throughout the video we see him in the same pose but when they show him moving it’s his evil version. Moira experimented on him and found a way to lock his original shy and calm personality in the back of his mind and forced the evil personality to be his everyday identity.
One of Moira's quotes. She said something about Tracer's chronal acceleration. Here. Your state of chronal uncertainty is fascinating to me Tracer, I do wish you would allow me to study you. Tracer: While I'm truly touched by your offer *sarcastic laugh* I think I'll have to pass. Perhaps she wanted to know more to help out Sigma? Great work as always Hammeh

I loved reihardts story, and i liked the infiltration cinematic of Volskaya. but this video really makes me "feel" more, if you know what i mean. I wasn’t expecting to like Sigma so much, but this has to be the best origin story yet. It’s spooky and fascinating at the same time. His “personalities” seem really cool and I can’t wait to learn more about his story! I knew he seemed similar to Moira! 🤓
All of my family are Dutch, and I absolutely love this! Yes the accent is one of the Dutch accents that I’m aware of. Usually Dutch accents focus more on pronunciations in the front of the mouth, you can somewhat hear this with Sigma. All and all, I don’t mind that we Dutchies get to have a mad scientist to relate with, it’s a nice alternative to all the other heroes.
I am super excited. I've always loved gravity manipulation as a concept, so he's most definately going to be my main from now on As for abilities I think his primary fire would be him throwing small debris like bullets perhaps Those orbs could be some sort of gravity grenades that either stay in place for a while slowing down enemies near it and curving or attracting projectiles near it, his defensive capabilities could involve stopping enemy fire via a stasis field he generates or something. I have no idea what his ultimate could be but I am very excited to find out
This is like a W.D Gaster from undertale in a nutshell A scientist that had an obsession with something and was able to get some sort of hand on it but it results in him being a deity but pretty messed up and insane
7:25 What happens when you put a human near a black holes? Depends on the size, but either way you die horribly, probably most of the earth too. This one seems to have an event horizon about the size of a grapefruit, so it has a mass comparable to Jupiter. That thing would almost instantly crush sigma into atoms as it consumed them, then the earth would literally start to orbit it while being torn apart by it. And become an accretion disc around it. But if sigma can manipulate gravity to that degree, he could be suppressing the INTENSE spacetime distortion around the event horizon, in which case the black hole would do basically nothing. I'm guessing he just couldn't get it to do the thing he wanted and had a really bad psychotic break because of it.
A more sci-fi interpretation of his multiple personalities is that the accident compressed multiple versions of himself across 5d space. 4d space is time, 5d space is other timelines. Tracer was smeared across 4d, sigma is compressed across 5d
What if Talon knew of his experiments and messed it up in order to try and get him on their side? Sigma said how the “field” messed up during his experiment, and maybe Moira knew of what would happen, knowing exactly what abilities he would gain, and how Talon could use them (just a thought).
Ooof, that'd be some serious knowledge by Moira if that happened! I fully expect she might have been involved in "treating" Sigma when he was taken by Talon, and helping stabilise him....perhaps treating the biological after-effects is her strong point , rather than interfering with what was created by a physics/astrophysics accident..what do you reckon?

7:27 okay so, I don't have any degrees in astrophysics as I'm still only in high school, however I do study astrophysics a lot on my own time. So, theres this thing called time dilation, where time slows down. This can be caused in 2 ways, increase in velocity or increase in the strength of a gravitational field. I'm not going to get to much into details, but you can calculate the effects of being in a certain strength of a gravitational feild using the equation (amont of time experienced for everything else) = (Time experienced by object effected)*1/(sqrt(1-rs/r). rs is the schwartzchild radius (event horizon radius) and r is the radius from the CENTER of the black hole. basically, all this means, the closer you are to the objects Schwartzchild radius (everything has one, including you) the more time will slow down for you, and you will see everything else, thats not being effected, speed up. so for example if you were x distance from the black hole (just some close distance i dont feel like doing math rn) for every 1 second you experience, someone else could experience 10 seconds, or 100, or 1000, it depends on how close you are. this also happens for space, since space and time are connected pretty closely but its pretty complex and im not really going to get into that. Now for if you stuck a human in front of a black hole, it would not be good, for a multitude of reasons. First off, tons and tons of radiation being both emitted and wrapping violently around the black hole that would probably kill them pretty quickly. And, it again depends on how close you are, but the tidal forces being applied to that person would, in scientific terms, spaghettify them. (im not even kidding, look up 'spaghettification') this is basically because the forces being applied to their feet, is so much greater than their head, it would literally stretch them into a big noodle.... or rip them in half either way they are gonners. as for the size of the black hole he created, if thats what he did create, he would be dead, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he could survive that close. but if he did, he would see some pretty incredible time dilation effects. and for reference, if all of earths mass were to turn into a black hole, it would only be about the size of a pea... so he created something pretty significant if he created a black hole.

The connections to Tracer are valid, but instead of Chrono-disassociation or exactly what afflicted Tracer, I feel it's more rooted in with space. Being in one place and then another instead of time, however, unlike Tracer's physical body being misplaced it's his mental faculties that are warping all over while his body is but a dormant vegetable able to accomplish only the smallest movement. That suit he has is likely aiding a lot of his movement and anchoring his mind to his body. I imagine Sigma is going to be a tank that deals in area control: canceling enemy fire in one spot and having it fire back out from another. And for his ult summons a black hole singularity all around him, sucking in all enemies and exploding them all over dealing massive damage.
He says Density, Mass, and Momentum too much to hold on to. Then in reverse he says, Gravity is a harness. Gravity is the answer to control these 3 things that he probably utilizes in his kit.
I personally believe that his mind is fractured across 3 places in time, the past (the scientist) the present (mentally broken patient) and the future (his violent evil talon member). All the points in time stuck in one body, in a way multiple personalities are, but at the same time these 3 set points in time are being slingshotted between the times they've come from. As far as the Gurnee scene. I think he is so mentally broken that he can't physically move in a sort of vegetable state and was put in a sanitarium. The melody was probably what he was listening to before the accident, being the metaphorical rope that helps him hold himself together to the present.
I like to think that when the black hole experiment went wrong, all of his timelines collapsed into one. Sigma is a function in which a finite series is added up. All of his personalities can be attributed to a different timeline. One in which he’s in-prisoned, one in which he goes insane, one in which the experiment succeeds and he turns evil, one in which he turns into a hero etc. All happening at the same time.
Just my idea. Sigma was a scientist on the moon base went crazy held there then talon broke him out and killed all the scientists including Winston's "dad"
before the accident he uses 1 pen after he uses 4, are the pens a symbol for the different personalities that are trapped inside of him? or something else?
I think the whole bunch of Sigma's appearing in random places (Scientist suddenly on the stretcher, Subject Sigma back in the lab etc.) Is just an interesting way of showing his scattered mind, he's lost his grip on reality maybe? I do wonder how Talon is using him tho....like how aware he is of his situation. Love the video btw!!

Sigma in my opinion is gonna be a great addition to Overwatch (especially with that reveal trailer). The inclusion in of this gravitational genius means we’re that much closer to the possibly of an overwatch event where you play as Sigma, Moira, Reaper, and Doomfist, with Sombra and Widowmaker on Comms elsewhere in the area.
Nobody seems to mentioning the fact that he's floating in the end credits render. So far Zenyatta has been the only character to take advantage of not having footsteps, maybe that is changing. He seems to be fully floating before the emote begins, so I'm not fully sold on him only floating for the emote animation.
I know I'm late to the party, by a lot, but PBS space-time (I think) had a video talking about as you descend past the event horizon of a black hole, the dimensions of time and space flip in their properties, at least mathematically speaking, such that, just as you become 'stuck' in space, you become 'unstuck' in time. What I think this means is that, as you fall into time dilation you see the universe play out in fast forward 'above' you before it closes into a single point.
TBH I think he's cool, but I don't like that he's the third hero in a row that's someone who we were never told that he existed until his reveal. There are quite a few lore characters that would make great heroes that we keep thinking are coming, then it ends up being someone new that we've never seen or heard of. I thought for sure we'd be getting Mauga, but I guess we were wrong. I'm still holding out hope for Liao and Junkerqueen. On a Sigma related note: Tumblr has already jumped on the ship wagon between him and Moira, and are making balls/nuts jokes, Gru jokes, and eyebrow jokes. The constant switching of setting and appearance were a bit confusing at first, but I think the point is to show what kind of state his mind is in. I personally think he may some involvement with Oasis.
So Hammeh, I don’t think the “Time Dilation” is the actual thing Sigma is suffering. I suspect that his suffering from effect of splitting apart across dimensions. Where his voice changes a few times during the trailer. This is probably all the realities of himself are fighting to hold themselves together when they probably all did the same test. Cause if it was time, he’d be fading in and out like tracer, but this seems to me like some kind of fragmentation of reality trying to break itself apart but his will holds him together. The suit is probably a way to help hold him in the current reality and suffer from disappearing from reality.
Sigma seems to grow when Talon is breaking out. This also happened in the short teaser clip showing the “subject Sigma” tag. Perhaps one of his abilities is to manipulate matter to physically grow in mass and/or volume?
For his main attack he shoots lasers out of the holes in his floating balls, rotating to every hole before having to reload. For ability two he throws one up and lasers shoot out of every hole. For his ult he unleashes them and idk
I really want a Matrix highlight intro him just freezing the bullets and then crouching and then him unfreezing it and they land behind him. This trailer was really unnerving, Blizzard has done a lot as of late to show how dark Talon is as of late they’ve had Amélie since release but Sombra added a lot of levity to the dynamic (which is still a great thing) but with the Baptiste’s short and Sigma, Talon seems a lot creepier. I really hope there’s an archives mission revolving around them that or ‘Overwatch 2/story mode’ has more.
I'm pretty convinced Sigma will have the ability to slow down time in an area - that's why Tracer opened the teaser and why Jeff was wearing a Lucio top in the teaser (Lucio's original ult was to slow time, until they changed it to Sound Barrier), and why they suddenly fixed TWO things relating to characters being slowed on the PTR, and time dilation is a well known effect of black holes. I also think he will have some sort ability to multiply himself, because of quantum superposition which I think is what is being hinted at with the multiple personalities / glitchiness in the origin story. I have a degree in astrophysics so I'm really excited for all of this! XD
I thought he also could be the prime Talon leader but due to his psychological struggle I don't think he's quite ready to leave the organization just yet. With his Advanced scientific background could he be the Mentor of Moira or was he inspired by her Article that pushed him to his 'breakthrough'? A possibility of him knowing the scientists on the Lunar Colony & his condition May parallel to Tracer's Chronal Disassociation.
Thinking of what his abilities could be, would be fun to imagine a "black hole bubble" that deploys and creates a sphere that absorbs damage and perhaps implodes. Perhaps a different form of defense is more of a survival ability where he can just materialize his health back up similar to roadhog in some fashion. If we wanna talk about tank mobility, nothing's crazier than imagining him just phase shifting wherever he wants. Or maybe because he's constantly being shown splitting apart he can create multiple instances of himself. In my opinion, Moira is still my favorite kind of villain being the amoral scientist, but Sigma definitely became the most interesting.
Everyone keeps saying reminds them of Magneto. Magneto has control over metal, not all matter. Lol. Maybe his mind set/ attitude is similar but not his powers. Can't wait for this hero.
I’m no expert but being near a black hole or anything of similar mass would distort space time, slowing it down, also another thing is that inside a black hole you can see events from the future because light particles can be seen from future timelines, which could explain part of his insanity, and why his perspective changes, not because he’s swapping between dimensions but he’s experiencing events from different points in time out of order Note: I am no expert and there are most likely some flaws in my logic, I am no astrophysicist but it’s an interesting concept
I’m pretty sure sigma is coming out on the PTR today but I just had a thought, every map in overwatch has breakable terrain, I remember playing as Sym(old sym) and picking up terrain like books and chunks of stone and just throwing them across spawn. What if sigma actually does something like this, or uses terrain,but as an ability??? Like he can pick up broken terrain and throw it🧐🧐🧐
At the start of the trailer, if you play it really slowly, there are some yellow letters that flash before it. They are backwards and when you put the the right way it spells out something in Dutch, it translates to “release me”
the gravity of a black hole has the potensial to make seconds into weeks/months, so maybe he became insane do to being trapped in time unable to move or breath for decades
In the beginning of the Video, he talks so an Unknown person or Entity named Tekeh or Something like that, the quote ---> "Tekeh it's.. if the unifing theorys are correct, we will soon be able to harness a black hole, nothing will ever be the same" who is Tekeh?
when Sigma in his Orange Suit and in his lab, at the end Backwards Words play, and when you reverse those words, Sigma says "The Melody is a Harness" what could that mean?
Spreading this everywhere I can because I haven't seen anyone else pick up on this. The VERY first equation(s) shown is Kepler's Third Law. It was Kepler's attempt to determine a philosophical concept known as the Music of the Spheres, which deals with apparent harmonic and resonance based properties of planetary motion and how gravity affects celestial bodies. It's not literally audible, of course, but it's possible that Blizzard is trying to convey the idea that Sigma's powers now allows him interpret it as literal music. It could be that or it could be a Talon mind control device messing with a bit of split personality resulting coming close to a singularity of infinite versions of himself. Quite likely, it's a combination of it all. At least that would be cool.
It shows him with an orange-ish black hole in his right hand, and a blue-ish black hole in his left. I wonder if this means he can switch between them? Orange being absorbing damage and blue being using the absorbed damage to buff himself? This is also based on the way his gauntlets/gloves look on the in-game model at the end. Kinda like Moira with her two hands
Theory: the first time Sigma says "release me" and his head shakes, it could be his alternate self (the evil version) wanting freedom, but we can see throughout the trailer that Sigma keeps saying hold it together, since we know he has the (potentially) 3 different versions of himself.

Also I just realized people are talking about all the abilities he can do. But I haven’t seen anyone talk about the negative ramifications that his abilities could harm himself and possible his teammates. I think this tank is going to be a 3 star difficulty one. And I also believe he has to have a complete precision and skill to make up for how much mass and force density ect that he can control by using the black one. This could be by far the most challenging hero to play as of late.

the yellow letters in the intro spell out "bevrijd me" which in Dutch translates to "free me" or "release me". in terms of the accent, mmm yeah kinda. it's not an overly obvious dutch accent where everything sounds super flat, but stuff like the slightly rolling R at times are a nice touch. granted I do feel like he's going a bit more of a german route, but only slightly. oh and last but least Hammeh, I think I found an interesting article on mental consequences from black hole exposure. they think that if you got sucked into a black hole and survive, you would kind of drift away from reality (exactly like Sigma). they say and I quote "This would mean that for any unfortunate person travelling through it, their past would be obliterated and they could have an infinite number of possible futures, leaving them somewhat adrift from our concept of reality."
The fragmenting scene is him trying to hold onto his mind I think he has multiple personalities the hold it together is him trying to keep the evil half at bay

It might explain how he harnessed the harness and with what could be different versions of him from different multiverses affecting him from his failure the first time. He might've seen another self harness it sucessfully for him to harness gravity even with his fractured mental state. That's just my opinion though haha.
theoritically, blackhole dont have any effect on human psychology. it only affect time. the closer you are to the blackhole, the slower the time move for you relative to other people outsidee the blackhole. you yourself dont exactly feel any different. even until you cross the event horizon, you still feel no different. ( Nolan's Interstellar explains this correctly ) the only effect blackhole have on you is if you fell into it long enough. because as approaching to the center, the gravity of the blackhole intensified, until you reach a point which gravity that affect your feet are bigger than which affect your head. so in a nutshell, you've been stretched infinitely ( spaghetified ) until you become just one long strand of plasma one atom thick drifting toward the center of blackhole. those three body splitting up scene is probably a metaphor for his triple personality. his obsessive side ( as a scientist ), his traumatic side ( because he fail ) , and his evil side ( he joined talon )
The Sigma Origin Story has arrived! We don't have all the answers yet - but, we know a lot about how Sigma came to be who he is - unaware that he's a Talon Living Weapon!

When he is laying in bed he holds his hands like a mudra, mudras represent the connection of body and spirit in various ways depending on the hand gesture. The one he is doing is the most common one, touching thumb to index which can represent the connection of space and air or the connection of self to a higher power.

I for sure feel a heavy theme of split personalities or split mind or presence with this hero, multiple shots where there are doubles of him, and the recurring line of “Hold it together” like he’s trying to keep these personalities in check. You can also see it through the dialogue and how his tone changes, one scene he’s a determined scientist, the next he’s a frail, damaged old man, the the next he’s emotionless and obsessed with violence and power. Very interesting.
Edit: There’s also the reversed line of “Release me” at the end, perhaps one of his forms that doesn’t wish to be with talon

This hero has me HYPED. He reminds me of the Marvel Comics villain Graviton, very very similar backstory honestly. Is that a bad thing? ABSOLUTELY NOT. He does also remind me of Magneto, but he's more Graviton. This guy is definitely my new main.

@@Hammeh He hasn't been a super prominent villain in the last decade. He has made several appearances, but mostly as part of an evil team or a cameo. He was a bigger villain for the avengers back in the 70s. He's extremely powerful. Just look up a RUclips video about him and you'll learn all you need to know.

I think that finger twitch in the jumpsuit scene 6:43 is him trying to write down equations; that's strengthened by the equations floating around him them; and the later image of him in his lab, but in that catatonic state 8:53.
From my high school understanding of relativity, the concept of space-time is that is that the more you are moving through space, the less you're moving through time, and vice versa. Basically if you are accelerating a lot, time slows down and less time will pass for you then people who aren't. As you approach the speed of light, you could move from one spot to another in what seems like instantly; which is one way to explain Tracer.
The force of gravity is based on something's mass; the more matter something has, the stronger things are pulled towards it. Black Holes have the most mass of anything we understand, that's why everything is pulled towards it. The force equation is Force=Mass*Acceleration; this makes Mass and Acceleration inverse from each other (A=F/M & M=F/A).
So if something had a set force, and you increased it's acceleration some how; like putting them in an experimental super jet; as that acceleration increases to infinity, the mass would decrease to nothing. That's Tracer's incorporeal state she's in as she teleports.
But what if you increased your mass instead, and made your self immovable and have objects drawn to you like a black hole, or better yet. What if you could choose if you want the power to be infinitely fast and thus in multiple places at once, without the ability to interact; or the power to be immovable and obliterate anything near you. I think that's what Sigma will be.

I think the only reason as to why light and some other waves can travel at stupendous speeds is because they have no mass. If they did, it would pratically require an infinite ammount of energy for these to move at such tremendous speeds.
Although I'm not entirely sure, I think that the more acceleration an object has, the more mass it will gain, so long as that acceleration is kept.
Tracer would become a blackhole if she blinked at light's speed due to the ammount of mass she'd gain :D

But that's actually the opposite of what happens when you accelerate. Remember the equation is A=F/M (1=2/2) so to increase the acceleration you need to either; increase force (2=4/2) or decrease mass (2=2/1).
You can increase force in two major ways;
1. Pushing Something: where you transfer the force of one object into another (Lucio boop)
2. Or putting something heavier near it: The gravitational pull of the object compounds the acceleration (Zarya Grav)
It's pretty intuitive actually; something that's heavier is harder to move.
Newton's second law only applies to objects at low velocities, so to figure out an object's mass at speeds near that of light's, it's more consistent to use Einstein's Special Relativity equations (Namely; Lorentz transformations).

I find that his character reminds me a lot of how John Forbes Nash Jr was portrayed in A Beautiful Mind.
He suffered with schizophrenia, which caused him to be paranoid and hallucinate visually and audibly. Some people said that the pressures of his work worsened his mental health.
I think when it shows Sigma as multiple copies, it demonstrates that his mind is split. He's shown as a scientist, a prisoner and his final talon form. Additionally, he has three different voice performances that go along with his different versions. That's also why the pen and other props reappear as though its multiple timelines - I think he's mixing fragments of his life. He hallucinates the melody too.
Talon, especially with Moira as a medical professional, would be able to manipulate easily and perhaps that's even what his head armor is.
I don't think Blizzard is going for the DID angle. I think he was exposed to that singularity when the containment field failed, and became merged with alternate versions from other dimensions.
Like an inverse on Tracer. She couldn't even maintain her own form in our universe, while Sigma is multiple dimensional versions merged into one form.
the way sigma reacts to that music makes me think that when the experiment went wrong he saw more than he should have outside of his reality; it would be fun to maybe hear sigma acknowledge the game music

As a dutchy, I must say that his accent is pretty flawless.
I did not catch on to it untill my 3rd rewatch and even at that point I wasn't even sure if it was Dutch or just a general English regional accent.
After hearing about his nationality I was able to pick out a few things such as short S's and harsh T's.
he is wearing blue and white like overwatch did in the past, maybe he was working for them, hence being n space like Winston. and something went wrong as he was working off duty on the black hole tech for overwatch. Maybe it's how they made the tech for tracer's plane. He might've continued to experiment after the tracer incident, and had the accident that changed him?

I have some speculations that some of the background scenes might be realted to other moments in Overwatch lore. The chamber where he lost control of the blackhole looks similar the the chamber they use to anchor Tracer. The rising debris toward the end of the video could be the destruction of Overwatch HQ.
I believe he could be the current strongest character in universe. I mean if he can manipulate gravity that makes him incredibly dangerous
There seems to be three of him. The early version of him in the scientist outfit, the middle version of him in the prison outfit, and the current version of him in the Talon outfit with the digitally augmented voice. Maybe exposure to the singularity somehow did a Doctor Manhattan on him and he exists simultaneously in all three timelines at once. That could be what's driving him mad. The Talon version of him being the latest in the timeline seems to have better control and understanding of his powers and situation, while the scientist and prison version of him are largely confused and just trying to make sense of what's going on. I wonder if the inevitability of seeing that he becomes a villain is what drives him to grab onto that to hang onto his own sanity while experiencing all these events out of sync with the natural flow of time. Maybe that drive for power, that belief that the accident was a gift from the universe, it helps him keep his mind at peace despite experiencing these events simultaneously. That might even be an oversimplification for the sake of having the trailer make sense. What if he experiences his entire life simultaneously and it's driving him insane? We're not designed to cope with that kind of non-linear existence.
Sigma is essentially the human equivalent of the Event Horizon film
Theory:
The accident caused some sort of mental disorder like multiple personalities.
The accident left him in a comma or a permanent state of shock but when his “evil” personality comes out he is able to move. That’s why throughout the video we see him in the same pose but when they show him moving it’s his evil version.
Moira experimented on him and found a way to lock his original shy and calm personality in the back of his mind and forced the evil personality to be his everyday identity.
One of Moira's quotes. She said something about Tracer's chronal acceleration. Here. Your state of chronal uncertainty is fascinating to me Tracer, I do wish you would allow me to study you.

All of my family are Dutch, and I absolutely love this! Yes the accent is one of the Dutch accents that I’m aware of. Usually Dutch accents focus more on pronunciations in the front of the mouth, you can somewhat hear this with Sigma. All and all, I don’t mind that we Dutchies get to have a mad scientist to relate with, it’s a nice alternative to all the other heroes.

Those orbs could be some sort of gravity grenades that either stay in place for a while slowing down enemies near it and curving or attracting projectiles near it, his defensive capabilities could involve stopping enemy fire via a stasis field he generates or something. I have no idea what his ultimate could be but I am very excited to find out

What happens when you put a human near a black holes? Depends on the size, but either way you die horribly, probably most of the earth too.
This one seems to have an event horizon about the size of a grapefruit, so it has a mass comparable to Jupiter. That thing would almost instantly crush sigma into atoms as it consumed them, then the earth would literally start to orbit it while being torn apart by it. And become an accretion disc around it.
But if sigma can manipulate gravity to that degree, he could be suppressing the INTENSE spacetime distortion around the event horizon, in which case the black hole would do basically nothing.
I'm guessing he just couldn't get it to do the thing he wanted and had a really bad psychotic break because of it.
A more sci-fi interpretation of his multiple personalities is that the accident compressed multiple versions of himself across 5d space. 4d space is time, 5d space is other timelines. Tracer was smeared across 4d, sigma is compressed across 5d

What if Talon knew of his experiments and messed it up in order to try and get him on their side? Sigma said how the “field” messed up during his experiment, and maybe Moira knew of what would happen, knowing exactly what abilities he would gain, and how Talon could use them (just a thought).

7:27 okay so, I don't have any degrees in astrophysics as I'm still only in high school, however I do study astrophysics a lot on my own time. So, theres this thing called time dilation, where time slows down. This can be caused in 2 ways, increase in velocity or increase in the strength of a gravitational field. I'm not going to get to much into details, but you can calculate the effects of being in a certain strength of a gravitational feild using the equation (amont of time experienced for everything else) = (Time experienced by object effected)*1/(sqrt(1-rs/r). rs is the schwartzchild radius (event horizon radius) and r is the radius from the CENTER of the black hole. basically, all this means, the closer you are to the objects Schwartzchild radius (everything has one, including you) the more time will slow down for you, and you will see everything else, thats not being effected, speed up. so for example if you were x distance from the black hole (just some close distance i dont feel like doing math rn) for every 1 second you experience, someone else could experience 10 seconds, or 100, or 1000, it depends on how close you are. this also happens for space, since space and time are connected pretty closely but its pretty complex and im not really going to get into that.
Now for if you stuck a human in front of a black hole, it would not be good, for a multitude of reasons. First off, tons and tons of radiation being both emitted and wrapping violently around the black hole that would probably kill them pretty quickly. And, it again depends on how close you are, but the tidal forces being applied to that person would, in scientific terms, spaghettify them. (im not even kidding, look up 'spaghettification') this is basically because the forces being applied to their feet, is so much greater than their head, it would literally stretch them into a big noodle.... or rip them in half either way they are gonners.
as for the size of the black hole he created, if thats what he did create, he would be dead, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he could survive that close. but if he did, he would see some pretty incredible time dilation effects. and for reference, if all of earths mass were to turn into a black hole, it would only be about the size of a pea... so he created something pretty significant if he created a black hole.

I like to think that the black hole "separated" Sigma into 2 persons, and that one is doing experiments on the other
The connections to Tracer are valid, but instead of Chrono-disassociation or exactly what afflicted Tracer, I feel it's more rooted in with space. Being in one place and then another instead of time, however, unlike Tracer's physical body being misplaced it's his mental faculties that are warping all over while his body is but a dormant vegetable able to accomplish only the smallest movement. That suit he has is likely aiding a lot of his movement and anchoring his mind to his body.
I imagine Sigma is going to be a tank that deals in area control: canceling enemy fire in one spot and having it fire back out from another. And for his ult summons a black hole singularity all around him, sucking in all enemies and exploding them all over dealing massive damage.
He says Density, Mass, and Momentum too much to hold on to. Then in reverse he says, Gravity is a harness. Gravity is the answer to control these 3 things that he probably utilizes in his kit.
I personally believe that his mind is fractured across 3 places in time, the past (the scientist) the present (mentally broken patient) and the future (his violent evil talon member). All the points in time stuck in one body, in a way multiple personalities are, but at the same time these 3 set points in time are being slingshotted between the times they've come from. As far as the Gurnee scene. I think he is so mentally broken that he can't physically move in a sort of vegetable state and was put in a sanitarium. The melody was probably what he was listening to before the accident, being the metaphorical rope that helps him hold himself together to the present.
I like to think that when the black hole experiment went wrong, all of his timelines collapsed into one. Sigma is a function in which a finite series is added up. All of his personalities can be attributed to a different timeline. One in which he’s in-prisoned, one in which he goes insane, one in which the experiment succeeds and he turns evil, one in which he turns into a hero etc. All happening at the same time.
Seems that Talon were able to bring Dr. Weir back from the Event Horizon...that's a mistake.
Just my idea. Sigma was a scientist on the moon base went crazy held there then talon broke him out and killed all the scientists including Winston's "dad"
I love characters like this. While I enjoy Junkrats type of crazy is fun, Sigmas type of crazy stems from gaining too much knowledge.
before the accident he uses 1 pen after he uses 4, are the pens a symbol for the different personalities that are trapped inside of him? or something else?
I think the whole bunch of Sigma's appearing in random places (Scientist suddenly on the stretcher, Subject Sigma back in the lab etc.) Is just an interesting way of showing his scattered mind, he's lost his grip on reality maybe? I do wonder how Talon is using him tho....like how aware he is of his situation. Love the video btw!!

Sigma in my opinion is gonna be a great addition to Overwatch (especially with that reveal trailer).
The inclusion in of this gravitational genius means we’re that much closer to the possibly of an overwatch event where you play as Sigma, Moira, Reaper, and Doomfist, with Sombra and Widowmaker on Comms elsewhere in the area.
Nobody seems to mentioning the fact that he's floating in the end credits render. So far Zenyatta has been the only character to take advantage of not having footsteps, maybe that is changing. He seems to be fully floating before the emote begins, so I'm not fully sold on him only floating for the emote animation.
Cant wait for a sigma novel! By far the most interesting character atm!

I know I'm late to the party, by a lot, but PBS space-time (I think) had a video talking about as you descend past the event horizon of a black hole, the dimensions of time and space flip in their properties, at least mathematically speaking, such that, just as you become 'stuck' in space, you become 'unstuck' in time. What I think this means is that, as you fall into time dilation you see the universe play out in fast forward 'above' you before it closes into a single point.
TBH I think he's cool, but I don't like that he's the third hero in a row that's someone who we were never told that he existed until his reveal. There are quite a few lore characters that would make great heroes that we keep thinking are coming, then it ends up being someone new that we've never seen or heard of. I thought for sure we'd be getting Mauga, but I guess we were wrong.
I'm still holding out hope for Liao and Junkerqueen.
On a Sigma related note: Tumblr has already jumped on the ship wagon between him and Moira, and are making balls/nuts jokes, Gru jokes, and eyebrow jokes.
The constant switching of setting and appearance were a bit confusing at first, but I think the point is to show what kind of state his mind is in.
I personally think he may some involvement with Oasis.
So Hammeh, I don’t think the “Time Dilation” is the actual thing Sigma is suffering. I suspect that his suffering from effect of splitting apart across dimensions. Where his voice changes a few times during the trailer. This is probably all the realities of himself are fighting to hold themselves together when they probably all did the same test. Cause if it was time, he’d be fading in and out like tracer, but this seems to me like some kind of fragmentation of reality trying to break itself apart but his will holds him together. The suit is probably a way to help hold him in the current reality and suffer from disappearing from reality.
This also includes on how he hears “voices” of people. These are probably other versions of himself weaving together with him in this reality.
One of if not the best origin stories yet.
Sigma seems to grow when Talon is breaking out. This also happened in the short teaser clip showing the “subject Sigma” tag. Perhaps one of his abilities is to manipulate matter to physically grow in mass and/or volume?

For his main attack he shoots lasers out of the holes in his floating balls, rotating to every hole before having to reload. For ability two he throws one up and lasers shoot out of every hole. For his ult he unleashes them and idk
I really want a Matrix highlight intro him just freezing the bullets and then crouching and then him unfreezing it and they land behind him. This trailer was really unnerving, Blizzard has done a lot as of late to show how dark Talon is as of late they’ve had Amélie since release but Sombra added a lot of levity to the dynamic (which is still a great thing) but with the Baptiste’s short and Sigma, Talon seems a lot creepier. I really hope there’s an archives mission revolving around them that or ‘Overwatch 2/story mode’ has more.
I'm pretty convinced Sigma will have the ability to slow down time in an area - that's why Tracer opened the teaser and why Jeff was wearing a Lucio top in the teaser (Lucio's original ult was to slow time, until they changed it to Sound Barrier), and why they suddenly fixed TWO things relating to characters being slowed on the PTR, and time dilation is a well known effect of black holes. I also think he will have some sort ability to multiply himself, because of quantum superposition which I think is what is being hinted at with the multiple personalities / glitchiness in the origin story. I have a degree in astrophysics so I'm really excited for all of this! XD
I thought he also could be the prime Talon leader but due to his psychological struggle I don't think he's quite ready to leave the organization just yet. With his Advanced scientific background could he be the Mentor of Moira or was he inspired by her Article that pushed him to his 'breakthrough'? A possibility of him knowing the scientists on the Lunar Colony & his condition May parallel to Tracer's Chronal Disassociation.
Talon took this sick man and made him a weapon.
Thinking of what his abilities could be, would be fun to imagine a "black hole bubble" that deploys and creates a sphere that absorbs damage and perhaps implodes.
Perhaps a different form of defense is more of a survival ability where he can just materialize his health back up similar to roadhog in some fashion.
If we wanna talk about tank mobility, nothing's crazier than imagining him just phase shifting wherever he wants. Or maybe because he's constantly being shown splitting apart he can create multiple instances of himself.
In my opinion, Moira is still my favorite kind of villain being the amoral scientist, but Sigma definitely became the most interesting.
Everyone keeps saying reminds them of Magneto. Magneto has control over metal, not all matter. Lol. Maybe his mind set/ attitude is similar but not his powers. Can't wait for this hero.

I’m no expert but being near a black hole or anything of similar mass would distort space time, slowing it down, also another thing is that inside a black hole you can see events from the future because light particles can be seen from future timelines, which could explain part of his insanity, and why his perspective changes, not because he’s swapping between dimensions but he’s experiencing events from different points in time out of order
Note: I am no expert and there are most likely some flaws in my logic, I am no astrophysicist but it’s an interesting concept
I’m pretty sure sigma is coming out on the PTR today but I just had a thought, every map in overwatch has breakable terrain, I remember playing as Sym(old sym) and picking up terrain like books and chunks of stone and just throwing them across spawn. What if sigma actually does something like this, or uses terrain,but as an ability??? Like he can pick up broken terrain and throw it🧐🧐🧐
I think he was a prime example of what could go wrong when you play with something you think you understand when in reality you dont
At the start of the trailer, if you play it really slowly, there are some yellow letters that flash before it. They are backwards and when you put the the right way it spells out something in Dutch, it translates to “release me”
the gravity of a black hole has the potensial to make seconds into weeks/months, so maybe he became insane do to being trapped in time unable to move or breath for decades

The VERY first equation(s) shown is Kepler's Third Law. It was Kepler's attempt to determine a philosophical concept known as the Music of the Spheres, which deals with apparent harmonic and resonance based properties of planetary motion and how gravity affects celestial bodies. It's not literally audible, of course, but it's possible that Blizzard is trying to convey the idea that Sigma's powers now allows him interpret it as literal music. It could be that or it could be a Talon mind control device messing with a bit of split personality resulting coming close to a singularity of infinite versions of himself. Quite likely, it's a combination of it all. At least that would be cool.
It shows him with an orange-ish black hole in his right hand, and a blue-ish black hole in his left. I wonder if this means he can switch between them? Orange being absorbing damage and blue being using the absorbed damage to buff himself? This is also based on the way his gauntlets/gloves look on the in-game model at the end. Kinda like Moira with her two hands
Theory: the first time Sigma says "release me" and his head shakes, it could be his alternate self (the evil version) wanting freedom, but we can see throughout the trailer that Sigma keeps saying hold it together, since we know he has the (potentially) 3 different versions of himself.

Also I just realized people are talking about all the abilities he can do. But I haven’t seen anyone talk about the negative ramifications that his abilities could harm himself and possible his teammates. I think this tank is going to be a 3 star difficulty one. And I also believe he has to have a complete precision and skill to make up for how much mass and force density ect that he can control by using the black one. This could be by far the most challenging hero to play as of late.

the yellow letters in the intro spell out "bevrijd me" which in Dutch translates to "free me" or "release me".
in terms of the accent, mmm yeah kinda. it's not an overly obvious dutch accent where everything sounds super flat, but stuff like the slightly rolling R at times are a nice touch. granted I do feel like he's going a bit more of a german route, but only slightly.
oh and last but least Hammeh, I think I found an interesting article on mental consequences from black hole exposure. they think that if you got sucked into a black hole and survive, you would kind of drift away from reality (exactly like Sigma). they say and I quote "This would mean that for any unfortunate person travelling through it, their past would be obliterated and they could have an infinite number of possible futures, leaving them somewhat adrift from our concept of reality."

It might explain how he harnessed the harness and with what could be different versions of him from different multiverses affecting him from his failure the first time. He might've seen another self harness it sucessfully for him to harness gravity even with his fractured mental state. That's just my opinion though haha.

theoritically, blackhole dont have any effect on human psychology. it only affect time. the closer you are to the blackhole, the slower the time move for you relative to other people outsidee the blackhole. you yourself dont exactly feel any different. even until you cross the event horizon, you still feel no different. ( Nolan's Interstellar explains this correctly ) the only effect blackhole have on you is if you fell into it long enough. because as approaching to the center, the gravity of the blackhole intensified, until you reach a point which gravity that affect your feet are bigger than which affect your head. so in a nutshell, you've been stretched infinitely ( spaghetified ) until you become just one long strand of plasma one atom thick drifting toward the center of blackhole.
those three body splitting up scene is probably a metaphor for his triple personality. his obsessive side ( as a scientist ), his traumatic side ( because he fail ) , and his evil side ( he joined talon )
