Overwatch lore and story on the past of Roadhog and Junkrat and how they met has been a mystery, until Overwatch Wasted Land, that is! The new Overwatch Comic released today has LOADS of interesting character and story background to Roadhog's origin story, his outlook on life, Junkertown lore, hero lore and story, a bit more of the Junkertown Queen's personality and how she runs the town, and how the Dynamic Duo (or similar) first came to meet!

I love this more serious side of roadhog. It shows a darker, more real result of the omnic crisis. Roadhog is a broken man, angry that the junkers have lost so much and now only focus on what they can gain. I think Bruce used to be a part of the liberation front, but lost himself along the way. Great analysis, as usual!

i think they're eluding to hog having something bad happen to him before the omnium explosion. Something the crisis did or took from him to really make him have such a cynical view on the world. Maybe he lost family? All that big barn to himself seems a bit odd. Maybe he had some type of farming business going. And that's why he has the pig motif.
Just a little theory on my end.
For sure...I mean, he was motivated enough to join a violent rebel group! What drives him to that, and then how does the Omnium explosion factor in?
Hammeh - Overwatch (FailCraft) there was this fanfiction that predicted Hog's large farm house long before the Junkertown map ever came, which is fascinating. Clearly Hog was angry at having his home taken away by the Australian government and given to omnics and is doubly angry that all his hard work to get his home and life back just brought him the apocalypse.
So in response to what he sees as the world's injustice, he's ready to see it burn. And what better way than with a man like Junkrat who wants to see everything explode?
Also regarding the fact that Hog stays despite hating it: maybe it's always been his home and he's fought too hard to leave it even when the Queen turned it into what it was, until he goes with Junkrat for revenge against the Queen and the world.
STITCHES WAS SAD I think it had to be the fact that when the liberation front was founded upon solidarity between each other as a United people fighting for their homes but are now reduced to a dog eat dog world view that sell each other out In the name of survival which happens a lot in the world especially revolutions like after the red revolution in russia their was chaos or the French revolution reign of terror when no one was safe that French kill each other and betray. So much for fraternity equality and brotherhood.

Good to see some Roadhog love. He's one of those characters with a really intriguing backstory which we are sadly shown far too little of.
Calling it now. Junkrat's " treasure " is just naughty pics of the junker queen.
Bruce might be part of the same group Mako was in, being the Australian Liberation Front. That's the vibe I got.
Remember the Junkertown trailer where junkrat says: "What was it you think got us out the boot, stealing the Queen's cash? blowing up her summer shack, the beat down at the bar!!!
I think Queen doesn't likes Roadhog because he tried to steal her money and junkrat blow up her shack and they both beat four of Queen's man. The trailer makes more sense now

This. This is why Roadhog and Junkrat need an animated short. I mean, there's so much lore about the, we don't know. What happened to Roadhog's family (that farm was much to big for 1 person) what made him join the liberation force? Why does he hate the queen? Why did he stay with Junkrat? How did the queen know about Junkrat's treasure? What is the treasure? Where did he get it and how? I really want to know what happened to turn Roadhog into what he is today. I'm guessing his family got killed by the omnics and he joined the liberation force for revenge, but he saw too much carnage, too much destruction. And when the omniums went down he tried to live in peace at his farm. But the world was a different place. Everyone tried to steal, rob and kill him but he was very well trained and still carried his weapons so that didn't work. I bet he hates violence deep down, due to what he saw in the war. But he still commits crimes because he also hates himself as said in the last line. Jeez, he's a way deeper character then I originally realized
Maybe after seeing everything go to shit after the war, we're left with a very bitter and dangerous man who just doesn't care anymore. That's just my personal take on who Roadhog is now these days.
There's something distinctly intriguing about Roadhog's personal philosophy. It's nihilistic, of course, but also rather fatalistic. This leaves him rather detached from the world and those around him (with a few exceptions). This is probably why he doesn't talk much-the few things he wants to say are communicated well by his his actions, and talking might encourage others to talk back, which he doesn't care about.
I wonder what might cause him to adopt a more constructive worldview. Getting along with Junkrat-a happy-go-lucky, deeply materialistic individual hell-bent on changing the world to meet his whims. They're philosophical opposites, in a way. Hopefully, the positive aspects of each of their philosophies rubs off on the other.

No secrets in the comic maybe.... I did think it was pretty short.
It's more an insight into Roadhog's character and past...I love it from those perspectives! :)
I think this will be the last we hear of Junkertown for awhile.(unless the Queen is a thing.) but Junkrat's Treasure was more of a big deal back in the day then what was shown in the comic. And it's likely not the gold, whatever Junkrat is hiding, he hiding it from Roadhog as well.
Guessing we will see what Zarya is up to next month, but have a feeling we will New Hero related to unrelated to all of this we talked about this year. Unrelated to Talon, unrelated to Junkertown, unrelated to the moon, unrelated to Overwatch. These might be all distractions, likely from a point which has not been touched on for almost a year.
What that is, I really need more time to figure out.(rough day, need coffee)

My question about the duo that I've always had was that are Roadhog and Junkrat really friends or just business partners because almost all of Roadhog's interaction with Junkrat is calling him annoying and such
Nicolas Garcia - In a lot of his older interractions he's more standoffish and seemingly annoyed by Junkrat but in the recent ones it sure seems like Bliz wants it to be read as a mutual relationship.
A old voiceline where Hog tells Rat to "Shut up" was replaced with him playing along and saying the catchphrase (You'll hook em and I'll cook em) together with Junkrat rather than blowing him off. They also now have multiple matching sprays and skins, notably the winter fistbump spray and Halloween skins, as well as their dance emotes going together if you sync it right. Also the note "From: Junkrat" on Hogs gun in his Winter skin.
I'm pretty sure there's probably more I can't remember off the top of my head but I feel like there's a lot to indicate that Roadhog started off rather annoyed with Junkrat and/or tried to keep his distance but has warmed up to him over time.
Alternatively Bliz changed their approach with how they wrote them and decided to make it a actual friendship rather than just a more onesided business deal because people liked them together.

I'd like to think of it like this: Roadhog finds Junkrat irritating and hates having to always save his ass from himself, but he does genuinely enjoy the adventures they go on and when Junkrat isn't being obnoxious, he doesn't mind the mad bomber.

One thing that I kinda noticed was clothing similarities between Bruce and Hog. I even half entertained the notion he was Roadhogs dad or brother, with the shock of white hair also being there.
He definitely strikes me as someone who's sentimental of the time before the omniums explosion. The fact that the barn's so close to the omnium yet "hasn't yet been picked clean" with the reasoning being that "the hog lives here" makes me think that was his home before the disaster. Is he staying there purely for convenience, or trying to hold on to what little he can of the past?

When junkrat was getting hassled in the bar, the man dude with the ginger beard was freaking JACKED.
Roadhog isn't one of my favorite characters.
But I kinda like how he's got muscle and fat.
In the Junkrat and Roadhog short, at the very beginning, Junkrat says
" I wonder what got us the boot. Stealing the Queens cash, blowing up her summer shack, the beat down at the bar?"
I'm not sure about the 1st two but the beat down at the bar is a reference to the Comic with Roadhog and Junkrat. So maybe the short happens very soon after the comic ends. It could also tell what Roadhog did to piss off the Queen.
I think Hog is like Mad Max, he had a life before the apocalypse but after he only cares about surviving and views most people with mistrust and has a almost nihilistic view about the world. Thats the vibe I got anyways
Roadhog really reminds me of Max Rocktansky from Mad Max, how Max was from before the war and now is one of the only to remember how life was before the apocalypse. How they hate what their world is around both of them. As well as how both Max and Roadhog are seen as this menacing, don't-get-him-on-his-bad-side type of people where fear is their respect.
There's a lot of Mad Max vibe to the Junkers. Even Ana's Wasteland skin was part "Many Mothers" inspired from Fury Road :)
The Adventures of J. and Silent Hog.
I love this comic, from learning more about Mako and how he lived before Junkrat, alone in the starting attack point on the junkertown map, to seemingly having Junkrat live with him. They share the breakfast table and rats things are strewn about making it more Home-y.I like the insight about Junkrat from Mako's perspective. "He's a liar, lies to himself, most of all" giving us some details that Rat isn't all peppy excitable explosions, that maybe he lies to himself about how the world is and how ok he himself is.
Roadhog didn't really have purpose but all of a sudden heres a rowdy loud dude offering to wreck the world who wronged and forgot about them with him. Just like he says, "The world deserves him, deserves both of us. And we're gonna make sure they don't forget it.
Literally more lore details in this 10 page character piece than the 10 minute cinematic they did for cancer.
The "Waltzing Matilda" at the end of the video was a nice touch

Oh also, the Queen calls Roadhog Mako when you reach the first checkpoint on the map and Roadhog is on the attacking team
What if the reason of the Queen of JunkerTown is mad at roadhog is because he tried to steal the queens gold? What if the animated short happened mere days after this comic? One of the possible reasons could be what junkrat listed, such as bar fights, or stealing the queens gold. That's my theory (Edit the exact reasons listed are, stealing the queens gold, blowing up her summer shack, or the beat down at the bar. So either they were really good for the time they were there or perhaps. Either junkrat blew up the queens summer shack, roadhog stole the queens gold, and they were both to blame for the bar beat down. Or they were both blamed for the bat beat down, and started the revenge towards the queen wich eventually got them kicked out.)

I personally think Mako was one of the major players of the Liberation, and, after everything settled down after the omnium was destroyed, The Queen became power hungry, think about it, the queen does seem like someone who would be power hungry, and Mako didnt like it, prehaps the queen started to manipulate the other major players in the organization, and slowly took them down, Hog being the last. The queen, not being able to manipulate hog into obeying, tryed fighting him, and we all know how hard it is to kill hog alone, I mean, the guy never dies (in game, I is trying to be funny)and The queen lost, but Mako was at such a disadvantage, he just left, not wanting to be apart of what the Queen made. That would, in my mind, be the reason why Mako hates Junkertown, thats my thoughts

Roadhog is now the most focused on character in canon with two feature comics, two animations, a map and a (noncanonical) event. Compare to tracer, with a place in all events, one comic, and a few animations, but the comic is the only one in which she's focused on

I do hope the queen is a character. I feel like she has potential to be a whole host of things... Maybe she could be like D.Va, being the Champion of MECH combat, I'd imagine she could have a powerful CQC mech suit and could have some interesting back and forth with D.Va. Who knows)

I really enjoyed this comic (and the video =D), but watching this made me realise a possible reason as to why Hog doesn't like to be referred to as a 'Pig'. Either A, it's a term he doesn't approve of, implying that he is a greedy and selfish person only out for himself or more likely B, it's an accurate representation of what he has become. He wears a mask to hide his true self, and wants to just live alone, not wanting people to judge him for the past or the future. But his actions as 'Hog' have left such a devastating impact on him that he cannot bear to hear himself be called that, but knows it to be true. In a sense, he too, is lying to himself. Aw man. Poor Hog.
THE BEAT DOWN AT THE BAR????????
Roadhog seems to be much like Max Rockatansky from Mad Max. They both are cold hearted, quiet scavangers. Both previously hoped for nice life. Both get pissed off when in action and most of all, both are riders.
Why do I feel like The Queen and Hog have some sort of past, a bad relationship kind of past, they seem a little similar? Who knows, would be a pretty neat situation and a good step into the lore deep before the current situation in junkertown :")
Roadhog and the Queen could be like Trotsky and Stalin, with the Queen wanting to build a nation and Roadhog wanting an anti Omnic revolution.

Wut? If they gunna add melee attacks into this game, make them realistic... Roadhog, Zarya, Winston, Doomfist and Bastion look like they could all tear someone's arms off but deal the same damage as some skinny Korean pro gamer and deals less damage than a dwarf with a hammer...

I guess the bar fight reffered to by Junkrat in The Plan short is probably the one that occurs in this comic.
I have a personal theory regarding Roadhog - he used to have a family. Wife, kids, the whole deal. But they all died when the Omnium blew and now, he has nothing left. It would explain, at least partially, why he came to Junkrat's rescue. It wasn't just financial self-interest and hatred of the queen - it was that old paternal instinct kicking in. He probably had a son once. Would've been about Junkrat's age had he lived...
Could have been a way better animation short than fucking mei, but well
óscar rivera abal Mei was done a while back, perhaps aimed to be released around the Lunar new year (hence the leak). It wouldn't make sense if they had not released it at all since it was already done at this point and they're just waiting for an event to release it to.
Shorts nowadays seem to have a criteria to convey a powerful emotion (well, except for the Junkertown intro, looks like it was fan made). Comics dive more into the lore and where powerful emotions are not required to be part of the script.
I like the Mei cinematic though and I am glad they released it. Perhaps to each of their own.

Could it be, that Bruce and Hog have a work history together? I noticed the similarities in their clothing, Bruces clearly mimic Hogs attire. Roadhog says, that Bruce was an engineer in the past. Could that be Hogs former job too? We know, that he is capable of building machines (like this refill station). Or it could just be, like you said, some kind of rebel "uniform" they wore and couldn't part from :)
I liked this comic... It seems Roadhog cares about Bruce, and they are dressed similarly. I think Bruce might be an old friend, maybe from Hog's old biker gang, who Roadhog is afraid he might outlive.

Two questions. One, what does Hog mean when he says "the world deserves him/us/them"? When reading through the first time I thought he meant it in a positive light, but based on your reaction it seems to be a more negative statement. Second, how in the hell does Roadhog drink with his mask on?

Im starting to wonder whether Junkrat actually has any sort of valuable treasure. I doubt its gold or something tradable, he would have used something like that to buy stuff. Probably not a weapon because he would probably just use it to blow things up for the hell of it. If it was scavenged from the omnium it could be something scientific, but i doubt junkrat would even know if something like that is valuable, not to mention the junker society probably couldn't care less about that stuff. What ever it is it must be able to be shared since junkrat basically auctioned off percentages of it to rodhog. He seems to be bragging about some grand treasure he has, maybe its something thats only valuable in his eyes but is trash to everyone else. Dunno, just dont think his treasure will be what all the characters hype it up to be.

Am i the only one who was bothered by the fact that allthough Roadhog isn't allowed to carry a weapon in Junkertown (according to the comic), they still let him keep whatever is strapped to his back and what looks deceptively like a gun ? And btw, i am also bothered by not knowing exactly what that thing is :D

Can somebody explain to me the new roadhog comic what is talking about and how he got friend with junkrat? i didn't understand it.
They became friends because they both stood for the same thing and I suppose because they are completely different personality wise they could learn a lot from each other that's how long friend ships last

Roadhog's not really Junkrats friend. He just helped him because he was sick of the queen and her cronies messing with everyone. That and he probabaly wanted some of that treasure.

What's the link to the animated comic?
Perhabs Bruce and Torjorn are related the both seem similar
according to "A Moment in Crime", Junkrat is 6'5" and Hog is 7'4". the proportions are a little off in the last image of the comic. Also, the bartender seems to be a cameo by Danny Trejo of "Machete" fame. Regarding the Queen and Roadhog, perhaps he was one of her enforcers, but also a more "intimate" acquaintance? A bad breakup would explain her emnity towards him. I got the impression that Roadhog was aware of Junkrat and his reputation, but Junkrat not so much about Roadhog. Anyway, I was a little disappointed in this comic. I expected a bit more from it in terms of story.

Disappointing comic imo. It solidified Mako's characterization, but that was the only good thing about it for me, really. I wish it'd presented us with a little more new information about junkertown, mako's past, junkrat's treasure or the junker queen. Also, the meeting between Roadhog and Junkrat felt kind of... anticlimactic? Like it wasn't a big deal and it didn't really warrant being featured in a comic. Again, it's more of a character piece, I know - I don't necessarily want action from future comics, I just want progression of some of the multitude of story threads that we already have.
