How did I not know about this channel earlier! Such a treasure trove of information. I also love the matter-of-fact and calm tone of your videos 😀 Such a soothing place for my introverted soul 🙃
Thanks, I was curious about them. I noticed the odd pigment info online and resisted ordering them. They look better than I expected but I think I'll pass as I have so many craft watercolors.
I hear you, too many craft watercolors here too, but I just couldn't fight the urge to see how they compared to the quality of other Prima sets since the price difference was notable. I was pleasantly surprised by the paint quality, but it's such a shame they didn't put more care into fact checking!
I recently purchased this set off of Amazon and thought I'd do some research as a beginner with water colour and came across your video, I found it very informative and useful.
I feel like a lot of traditional watercolorists didn't understand these sets (the others more than this one which is much more broad in scope). They are a collection of premixed convenience colors that are intended to work well together as a set with a theme and marketed to hobbyists. Many have three or even four pigments per color. It's a great way to get a nice cohesive set of colors you can just put your brush in and paint with for people who have no interest or knowledge in mixing from basic shades. They are not even sold with the art supplies, but in the papercraft section of stores. They are nice for what they are, I've seen some horrid reviews that try to turn them into something they are not and judge them unfairly. It's apples and oranges. I have a couple (Tropicals and Odyssey) and may pick up one or two more, I'm especially interested in the Vintage Pastels which I think are beautiful, and Woodlands which is very "chill" soft natural tones. These are great for casual art, crafting, cardmaking, coloring books, etc. Art Philosophy has recently added detailed info on pigments etc for these on their website, and they also released a line of traditional watercolors in tubes.. probably in response to the art communities interest.
Unfortunately the company itself is prone to calling their pan sets "artist grade" and giving them better than accurate lightfast ratings. This makes them more appealing for art use vs craft use, and the price is not always cheap enough to justify this. Sadly, this confetti 24 set was the most fugitive set I've ever owned with nearly all colors being either fugitive pigments or adding fluorescent dyes that the colors faded within weeks near a window (instead of the usual several months for most fugitive colors like opera pink/alizarin/prussian/aureolin).Only a few colors remain unchanged after a year or more, unlike pro paints that can have no fading after years of being indoors near a little bit of sun at dawn coming through a window. I feel like they work well as a paint, especially for card making, but can't compete against things like Miya's 36 set or Pretty Excellent.
I actually got most of the old prima watercolor sets, but they were absolutely terrible. They were okay as long as I didn't try to mix anything, otherwise, it was chalky and got ugly real fast. Love your reviews, actually check youtube whenever I'm free to see if there is anything new! With Covid going on, I actually ordered some new watercolor palettes to try out and was wondering what you thought of them after the initial reviews. I am getting the Emooqi 48, Dugato, and Artsy Professional 24 set.
Yeah my old Prima 12 pan sets were so chalky and hard to re-wet. I enjoyed the Emooqi and Dugato sets, but didn't like Artsy/Superior's Master Level Solid Watercolors. I think Pretty Excellent (Mei Liang 36) was a lot nicer if you haven't tried that one. Though, many of those are similar enough that you may not need them all because of duplicate colors unless you paint a ton. Happy painting :)
Kimberly Crick Art oh I wish I haven’t already ordered them, but hey at least I get a nice tin, and I can always keep the paints for just background washes. Yep I couldn’t believe how chalky the prima set was, like after I ordered them I honestly wondered why there were so many glowing reviews on RUclips. Makes no sense to me. Anyways, thanks for replying and hope there are more reviews to come, love watching your videos!!
I'm not feeling inclined to buy the primateks, but I love the little cards you made. Good review, as always. (Glad to see you got your hands on some Roman Szmal too, they are great, aren't they :) )
Altenew is famous for their floral stamps so they came up with this watercolor set for crafters to use to color them. These colors match their ink collection. Really pretty colors. My set came with no pigment or lightfastness info. When using them, they remind me of the Prima Marketing (Art Philosophy) and Jane Davenport watercolors, but I haven’t noticed any graininess as I have with some of the early Primas. I think they’re great for making cards or art journaling. Bright colors and rewet easily. However, I would choose an artist grade watercolor for a painting to sell or to hang.
I already have Decadent Pies, Tropicals, Complexion, Pastel Dreams, and the Brights set from Jane Davenport, so getting this set seemed more than redundant. Plus the paints looked similar to Meeden’s, just visually, and I didn’t like the Meeden paint AT ALL.
This reminds me of the paul ruben sets where there were typos everywhere and I had struggles matching the name and pigments to the right colours (that really annoyed me too, lol). Ohhhhh.. opaque white, I'm excited!... and that mixing chart is so beautiful especially that teal and purple. Just a question, I can see the palette is plastic.. how durable do you think that is? Is it like a cheap insert or a sturdy one like sakura koi set? Also happy holidays! Enjoy and have a beautiful 2020 :)
Happy holidays Faye! It's almost as durable as the Sakura one, but I think if I took it out and flexed it a few times it might crack. I don't have too high of hopes of it being refillable once it's well used. I'll probably take it out eventually and use the tin with half pans and magnets :)

My experience with the prima sets was the same as yours and I too, have resisted buying more. So I’m glad you’re reviewing this set.
You have some of my favourite watercolour videos, always enjoy the very specific colour information and learning from your mixing prowess. Thank you!

The polar lights look gorgeous 🥰!
Very nice Kimberly 😊
Wow! Amazing. You can draw very beautiful.
Thank you, I love your channel :)

Merry Christmas 🎄 beautiful painting 🎄👍
Love the cards, thx for some good ideas!
huh the interior of the case reminded me an awful lot of the daler rowney aquafine 24 set. i wonder if theres any relatiom btwn the two at all
Maybe they both bought the same tin packaging from a Chinese factory, that seems to happen a lot lol.

The colors kinda if remind me of the Altenew watercolor set.
I haven't seen that one, is the Altenew set any good?

I'm here like "wow, what a great variety of pinks this is. Just enough to get started". idk, maybe the browns are for skin.
