Correction: Olds did not come up with the BOLO idea. Cherry and Wetterhan came up with the idea and had Olds submit it to command for approval. General Olds was my hero as a kid. I got to meet him at an airshow once. He was a great fighter pilot, but a better human being.

As an aside-ish thing we still had F-105's with the reserve wing here at Hill when I first arrived in 85. I'd always heard the nickname "Thud" came from the sound of the F-105 hitting the ground but figured it was simply a shortened version of the actual name "Thunderchief". I was wrong and the night the last two 105's left for the boneyard I found it was called that.
I was at the far end of the runway waiting on the road to access the taxiway to get to a hard pad when they rolled up for take off. First the throttles went to full power with a roar, then the roar deepened as they started to roll. Then there was a huge THUD as they hit the water injection and two spikes of flame climbed almost vertically off the runway. Hell of a memory and hell of a sight.

Rolling Thunder was a hedge trimming exercise. By the time a mission made i's way up the chain, got approval in D.C. and made its way back down, the targets were moved or the strike was modified to the point where they were pounding mud. Criminal that he was (I mean Johnson was too) Nixon pulled the stop pins with Linebacker I & II. We went "downtown" on those and brought Hanoi to the table.
Olds also got called on the carpet for this operation. They planned it at the wing level and kept D.C. out of it. McNamara was livid. But what could he do?

Olds was the quintessential fighter pilot! Operation Bolo, however, wasn't originally his idea but Capt. John Stone's. Stone brought it to Olds, he agreed with it and assigned 4 pilots (one of which was Stone) to plan it out. I don't say this to diminish anything that Olds did, but rather to ensure that the other pilots receive their due credit!

I was at Korat in 1966-7. We did not have as bad a opinion of the F-105 as is portrayed here. It was an old fighter by this time and we used what we had (as always). It was the Russians that were the problem, not the North Vietnamese. They were much better pilots than the North Vietnamese. The same is true of the SAMS, the Russian technicians were much better than the Vietnamese. No one mentions how fast the F-105 could go if it was in one piece, close to 2,000 mph. (Once). (A little over 1,000 mph on the deck compared to the MIG-21's approx 750 mph). Ask the Russians how they liked the AGM-45 Shrike.

The air war specifically Rolling Thunder had a massive effect on the war. Even Vietnams leaders stated had the bombing continued for another 2 weeks they would have surrendered.
If it hadn’t been for Hanoi Jane and others the outcome should have been different.

I very good video, for sure, but having heard MOST of the total story on cable tv, several years ago, I was disappointed that "the rest of the story" wasn't covered.
What the cable tv version mentioned, was how the US had anticipated that these short-ranged MIG-21s would get low on fuel, and then, unable to land at their own base (for reasons that I can't remember), they would proceed to another North Vietnamese airbase. The US had fighters waiting for the MIGs there.
The US also anticipated that the MIGs would then proceed on to an airbase inside China. The US had fighters waiting for them to start heading there.
But, unfortunately, I never got to watch what happened in that part of the battle. I was hoping that I would get to catch it here, but no such luck.
Perhaps I can do an online search of the story, and just read about it. At least I now know that it was called "Operation Bolo".
But, at least, I did get to enjoy what was presented here.

After we got our hands on a MIG-21stolen by a defector, a top secret operation at area 51 led to a tactics change that dramatically improved the kill ratio between F-4 and MIG-21.

    • @perrybonney9090
      @perrybonney9090 6 месяцев назад +1

Are you sure that it was from a defector? The version that I heard was that, we got a MIG-21 from Canada.
The short version of the story is, that, Canada was pissed that we wouldn't sell them our top fighter. So they surreptitiously bought a bunch of MIG-21s from the Soviet Union. They learned how to fly them. But then the US found out about it. The US made Canada give them all back to the Soviets, except for two. One crashed (during routine training operations in Canada), out of fuel. And the US asked for the other one. (Hopefully, the US paid for it.)
Now it's possible that we are both correct.
Now, I do know of a MIG-25 Foxbat that a Soviet defector flew to Japan. I actually remember reading in Time Magazine about that when it happened.
"On September 6, 1976, Lieutenant Viktor Belenko of the Soviet Air Defense Forces defected by flying his Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25P "Foxbat" aircraft from near Vladivostok in the Far East of the Soviet Union to Hakodate Airport in Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan." - Wikipedia, for what that's worth.

Robin Olds is an interesting character. Too bad he didn't get a chance to fly in Korea (against his best efforts to do so). Honestly, there are times when a man like him has been needed in command. He may bend some rules but in my research, almost always for the right reasons. He was never one to pull any punches in speaking his mind.

You left out some of the best parts, like how they grounded every single other US aircraft to pull this off (you had to have visual confirmation to launch a missile) they also didnt tell the NSA about the operation because they needed their surveillance planes to pull it off.

It took tactics. Tactics that favored the F-4’s strengths. Any Phantom driver will tell you don’t tangle with a MiG-21 down low, they’ll outmaneuver you. The same way the AVG used their inferior Flying Tiger P-40’s to best far superior Oscars and Zeros.
