The SD1 was my first overdrive pedal. I tried a lot of different overdrive pedals since and I’m still using the SD1. I sold all the others. Sometimes it can be cheap and good.

Same here, some overdrives don’t work well with Fender Amps, distortions never do, but a SD-1 into Matshalls rules, that’s what I use right now again, after going trough dozens of different overdrives it’s back to the roots again. For my Fender amp I use the King Tone Blues Power if I want some SRV tones but the SD-1 does not work well with Fenders for me, I strictly use it with Marshalls.

the best booster, they got it right from the get-go in 1981. I tried both MXR DIst plus and DOD 250 and TS and SoulFood, but SD-1 has much better note separation and more clarity.

The extra bit of aggression that you getr from the SD-1 is what does it for me. It would be cool to see a comparison between these two and thhe MXR GT-OD, that has an internal switch that supposedly makes it the ZW44, just to see how close it gets.

I have both and came to the same conclusion as you. SD1 has a bit more high end bite, which I like a lot. I was hoping the Zakk OD would replace the SD1 on my board for aesthetic purposes, but it looks like the SD1 is here to stay.

Big difference. I’m currently using an mxr double double, which they don’t make any more. Supposed to be a combo of tube screamer and ocd On 2 separate channels. I have to get the old standby DS1. I’ve just been happy with this and I especially like it on my little 5 watt and higher amps. Great video. Thanks. 🤘

I thought the secret to using an OD pedal was just level at 10 and drive at zero. I thought boosting gain on pedal in front of a distorted amp would just produce too much noise. Thanks man, I've learned a lot from you. I just picked up a JVM 205h 50 watt head for a really good deal.

The ZW44 is cloned from the old made in Japan Boss SD1 from the 80s. That's why it's brighter and has less gain.
On the made in Taiwan SD1s, Boss increased the gain and made changes to the voicing to make it a bit warmer.
The SD1 is one of the few pedals wherein the new ones better than the old ones.

Boss has a lot of proprietary components. If I remember correctly, Zakk used the SD1 for a long time, before joining Dunlop/MXR as an endorser. So my guess is that his sig OD is the same circuit as the SD1, but without the proprietary Boss chip(s). The difference is so small it can probably be resolved with the tone knob. It ends up being more of a matter of build quality, especially whether you prefer the clicky switch of the MXR (which I do), or the larger soft one of the Boss.
