He was the "gentile giant," the "teddy bear," and on game day he was ready to take on any linebacker...Butkus, Nitschke - bring them on. The Rams games with the 49ers are still thrilling to watch matching Gabe with John Brodie. Reach into the clouds if you want to meet Roman someday. RIP.
I became a Rams fan in 67 when I was 16. It's great seeing the other 60's Ram players. Josephson, Bass, Snow, Truax, Casey, etc. Players I haven't thought about in many years. For me the late 60's was the golden age of the Rams.
Big Roman (18) was tough as nails. The Rams were a power team in his era, battling the Packers and Colts in the Western Division in some historic games.
My first NFL hero. I was a kid in the mid-late 60's, just south of Agoura, I got a projector and put it over a large picture of Roman, and painted a 3 foot by 2 foot image of him throwing. His greatest completion was completing an episode of Gilligan's Island (1966). Should be in the NFL HOF just for that let alone league MVP in 1969 and career 201 TDs versus 140 INTs. Compare that to the always over-rated HOF Joe Namath: 173 TDs versus 220 INTs. Just do the na-math.

When the Rams traded QB Roman Gabriel to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973, the Eagles gave up their 1st round pick in 1974 and both their 1st and 3rd round picks in 1975 for a QB who had just come off a serious elbow injury the previous season. New Eagles head coach Mike McCormick was looking for a quick fix in his rebuilding plans and he also traded away the Eagles 1976 1st round draft pick and their 1977 1st and 3rd round draft picks to the Cincinnati Bengals for LB Bill Bergey. Both moves cost them their future high draft picks and his plan for a 'quick fix' backfired and McCormick was fired after the 1975 season leaving his successor Dick Vermeil without any high draft picks until 1978.
