He was in the 3rd to last episode of Atlanta; I’d believe that was his final on screen appearance. Truly a gift to see him continue to appear in thing’s celebrating black culture

You will be remembered as a legend.
May his memory never die, and his name never be forgotten.
I will always love how he played Preacher, the loveable, smooth-talking con artist who was able to stand toe-to-toe with Sidney Poitier's Buck, the no-nonsense, honest wagon master. Those two legends did a great job in that little-known classic that is one of the best Westerns ever made.

No question about it, to me this is a colossal blockbuster film. Belafonte's performance is Supreme.

Excellent performance by Belafonte here. Scarily, the story told by his character was based on a real event. The events described really happened but the man who was lynched did not die immediately.
First thing that came to my mind when learning about the dead of Harry Bellafonte was his music. Then I remenbered the thrills I had seeing this particular scene.
Those words, even if written for a fiction, should never be forgotten.

But fictional or not, the words he uses are strong and true. Such things sadly happened in the past and could happen again without the will of every human being to stand against.
Peoples and politics with such rotten minds are gaining power in my country (France) as in many others and it makes me mad to see that even some good people agree.
Activists like Harry Bellafonte have fought a whole lifetime and I sincerly hope it was not in vain.

When I first saw this film at the theater with my girlfriend, I thought that this was the BEST film that Spike ever did. Rest in Heaven, Harry Belafonte. You will NEVER be forgotten.

You’re absolutely right, Queen ! 💯💯💯 I personally knew about it before I saw the film and I was quite surprised Spike Lee decided to reference it and to have Harry Belafonte tell it as a fictional character but it makes sense given that his lynching happened the year after Birth of a Nation was released
Yeah the lynching of Jesse Washington was horrible. The only redeemable quality about it was that it was so publicly condemned that other states started taking more action against lynching.
The way this is directed is so well done, they cut the scene of them being ´baptized´ with Belafonte´s character describing what happened to the guy to make it hit harder
The actual full quote from Woodrow Wilson was “It's like writing history with lightning. My only regret is that it is all so terribly true.” without that second sentence it alters the context greatly.
We don't know for sure if Wilson really even said such a thing, though. It's true that Wilson attended a screening of the film, it's true that Wilson had some infuriating racist views and it's true that Griffith promoted this alleged quote in future prints of the film. However: "How Wilson reacted is a matter of dispute. Twenty-two years later, a magazine writer alleged that he said about the film, 'It is like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true.' It is extremely doubtful that Wilson uttered those words." -from "Woodrow Wilson: A Biography" by John Milton Cooper Jr.

The 2nd sentence is the indictment of white supremacists every & the government entities(including Wilson himself)that empower them rather than punish them as the terrorists they are and have always been.

I stood up in the theatre when he came onscreen. I wasn't expecting to see him, but I sure was happy! This was one if the most powerful scenes
And to think that when the 2016 'Birth of A Nation' movie came out some people were saying that it would 'divide the races' and 'spread hate'. Asked as many as I could if they'd heard of the original 'Birth of a Nation' movie the movie that caused KK membership to sky rocket.
Fun fact: He was in Beetlejuice, he was the singing voice of the character Delia in the world famous dinner table scene.
Read the book, then found out about this incredible movie. RIP, Harry Belafonte.

The idea of black power was born from perseverance, white power was born from superiority. They are not the same.
But that’s not what they mean when they say white power. It’s okay to be proud to be who you are. Also Africans are responsible as well for slavery let’s not beat around here
Search up "what are we doing to white people" and you might just change your mind on that. It doesn't matter what something starts out as if it turns into another hate movement. Shouting power to any singular people is a real slippery slope and not once in all of human history has it ended well. Be proud all you want but be careful you don't become what you hated.

Yes, African tribal chiefs and warlords enslaved their own people especially during the 17-19th centuries. But that was standard practice for many civilisations across the world and had been since ancient Mesopotamia. The Africans did not enslave their own people on any racial or ethnic grounds, they did so because they were people that could be used as free labour. The ideology of the white coloniser justified slavery because their doctrine meant black folk were not even viewed as human, rather, as cattle or livestock. Therefore, their reprehensible living conditions were totally justified in their eyes.

Ironically, the director felt his film was not racist and was amazed so many people thought it was....he took the profits from this film to make 'Intolerance' which interjects I think 5 different examples of intolerance through the ages...trying to show people the real D. W. Griffith.

Jesse Washington most likely killed Lucy Fryer, but he deserved a trial and a jury of his peers. As such, no one knows for sure who killed her because frontier justice is just as likely not justice at all.

This movie is decent and worth watching it’s not as preachy as you think it’s gonna be, this is like the worst scenes in the movie. The fat wife hollering during the movie is the best character. This was so cartoony it's almost offensive to history. People seem to forget the plane hijackings that were done in the name of "black power" as well as actions take by members of the Nation Of Islam.
